Frequency Response Reduced Order Model Of Primary Resonance Of Electrostatically Actuated Mems Circular Plate Resonators, Dumitru I. Caruntu, Reynaldo Oyervides Feb 2017

Frequency Response Reduced Order Model Of Primary Resonance Of Electrostatically Actuated Mems Circular Plate Resonators, Dumitru I. Caruntu, Reynaldo Oyervides

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper deals with the amplitude-frequency response of soft AC electrostatically actuated MEMS clamped circular plates. Alternating Current (AC) frequency is near half natural frequency of the plate. This results in primary resonance of the system. Two methods are used and compared, namely the Method of Multiple Scales (MMS), and Reduced Order Model (ROM). Both methods are in excellent agreement for amplitudes less than 0.4 of the gap. For amplitudes between 0.4 and 1 of the gap only seven terms ROM accurately predicts the behavior of the system. The effects of the voltage and damping parameters on the frequency response …

Removal Of Organic Micro-Pollutants From Water Using Sewage Sludge Based Composite Adsorbents, Rui Ding Feb 2017

Removal Of Organic Micro-Pollutants From Water Using Sewage Sludge Based Composite Adsorbents, Rui Ding

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Millions of tons of sewage sludge, waste oil sludge and fish waste are produced annually, and improper treatment/disposal of these wastes have resulted in numerous environmental issues. On the other hand, these wastes are rich in organic materials, metals, and inorganic minerals and could be sustainable resources if utilized properly. The main purpose of this dissertation study was, therefore, to convert these wastes into composite adsorbents, and then use these adsorbents to remove various types of organic pollutants, emerging organic contaminants in particular, from wastewater and drinking water sources.

It is hypothesized that a hydrophobic carbon phase in the composite …

Reversible Control Of The Magnetization Of Fe₃O₄ Via Lithium Ions, Guodong Wei, Lin Wei, Dong Wang, Yufeng Tian, Yanxue Chen, Shishen Yan, Liangmo Mei, Jun Jiao

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this report, a reversible control of Fe₃O₄ saturated magnetization by Li ions is demonstrated. A miniature Li ion battery (LIB) was assembled using a Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle layer as the active cathode. A stable magnetism modulation is realized by a nondestructive electrochemical process in which the lithium insertion results in a valence change and partial redistribution of Fe cations in the crystal structure. The relation between the discharge voltage and the chemical phases were studied by ex situ X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurement. In a suitable discharge potential range, a reversible control of Fe₃O₄ saturated magnetization was obtained without structural …

With over a million median sternotomy surgeries performed worldwide every year, sternal wound complications have posed a serious risk to the affected patients. A rigid therapeutic sternal fixation device has therefore become a necessity. In this work, the incorporation of up to 0.5 mol% of tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5), in exchange for zinc oxide (ZnO), into the SiO2-ZnO-CaO-SrO-P2O5 glass system is presented. The effect of Ta incorporation on the physical, chemical and biological properties of the glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs) prepared from them have been presented in this manuscript. The data obtained …

Online Algorithms For Content Caching: An Economic Perspective, Ammar Gharaibeh Jan 2017

Online Algorithms For Content Caching: An Economic Perspective, Ammar Gharaibeh

Dissertations

Content Caching at intermediate nodes, such that future requests can be served without going back to the origin of the content, is an effective way to optimize the operations of computer networks. Therefore, content caching reduces the delivery delay and improves the users’ Quality of Experience (QoE). The current literature either proposes offline algorithms that have complete knowledge of the request profile a priori, or proposes heuristics without provable performance. In this dissertation, online algorithms are presented for content caching in three different network settings: the current Internet Network, collaborative multi-cell coordinated network, and future Content Centric Networks (CCN). Due …

Sparsity Based Methods For Target Localization In Multi-Sensor Radar, Haley H. Kim Jan 2017

Sparsity Based Methods For Target Localization In Multi-Sensor Radar, Haley H. Kim

Dissertations

In this dissertation, several sparsity-based methods for ground moving target indicator (GMTI) radar with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) random arrays are proposed. MIMO random arrays are large arrays that employ multiple transmitters and receivers, the positions of the transmitters and the receivers are randomly chosen. Since the resolution of the array depends on the size of the array, MIMO random arrays obtain a high resolution. However, since the positions of the sensors are randomly chosen, the array suffers from large sidelobes which may lead to an increased false alarm probability. The number of sensors of a MIMO random array required to …

Assessment Of A Hand Exoskeleton On Proximal And Distal Training In Virtual Environments For Robot Mediated Upper Extremity Rehabilitation, Kevin Abbruzzese Jan 2017

Assessment Of A Hand Exoskeleton On Proximal And Distal Training In Virtual Environments For Robot Mediated Upper Extremity Rehabilitation, Kevin Abbruzzese

Dissertations

Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States with approximately 800,000 cases per year. This cerebral vascular accident results in neurological impairments that reduce limb function and limit the daily independence of the individual. Evidence suggests that therapeutic interventions with repetitive motor training can aid in functional recovery of the paretic limb. Robotic rehabilitation may present an exercise intervention that can improve training and induce motor plasticity in individuals with stroke. An active (motorized) hand exoskeleton that provides support for wrist flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, pronation/supination, and finger pinch is integrated with a pre-existing 3-Degree of Freedom (DOF) haptic …

Development Of Low Alloy Steel By Direct Metal Laser Sintering, Elias Jelis Jan 2017

Development Of Low Alloy Steel By Direct Metal Laser Sintering, Elias Jelis

Dissertations

The US Department of Defense is interested in developing, understanding, and optimizing process parameters for low alloy (4340/4140 steel) for the powder bed fusion process. Low alloy steel is used in parts where high strength and toughness are required. During parameter optimization, several aspects of the process are investigated. Powder size and morphology optimization is important for manufacturability because adequate packing is required to produce full density components. Microstructure evaluation is used in order to provide insight into parameters that lead to optimal mechanical performance and recoating performance. Influence of residual stress is evaluated with this process. Large thermal stress …

Denoising Techniques Reveal Neural Correlates Of Modulation Masking Release In Auditory Cortex, Sahil Chaubal Jan 2017

Denoising Techniques Reveal Neural Correlates Of Modulation Masking Release In Auditory Cortex, Sahil Chaubal

Theses

Hearing aids allow hearing impaired (HI) individuals to regain auditory perception in quiet settings. However, despite advances in hearing aid technology, HI individuals do not perform as well in situations with background sound as normally hearing (NH) listeners. An extensive literature demonstrates that when comparing tone detection performance in background noise, NH listeners have better thresholds when that noise is temporally modulated as compared to temporally unmodulated. However, this perceptual benefit, called Modulation Masking Release (MMR), is much reduced in HI listeners, and this is thought to be a reason for why HI listeners struggle in the presence of background …

Source-Channel Coding For Coordination Over A Noisy Two-Node Network, Sarah A. Obead Jan 2017

Source-Channel Coding For Coordination Over A Noisy Two-Node Network, Sarah A. Obead

Theses

Recently, the concept of coordinating actions between distributed agents has emerged in the information theory literature. It was first introduced by Cuff in 2008 for the point-to-point case of coordination. However, Cuff’s work and the vast majority of the follow-up research are based on establishing coordination over noise-free communication links. In contrast, this thesis investigates the open problem of coordination over noisy point-to-point links. The aim of this study is to examine Shannon’s source-channel separation theorem in the context of coordination. To that end, a general joint scheme to achieve the strong notion of coordination over a discrete memoryless channel …

Novel Experimental Method For The Determination Of The Minimum Agitation Speed For Solids Suspension In Flat-Bottomed Stirred Tank Reactors, Shriarjun Shastry

Theses

Knowledge of the minimum agitation speed, Njs, required to suspend finely divided solids in vessels stirred by an impeller is a critical parameter to properly operate industrial tanks in a large number of industrial operations. The most common experimental approach to measure Njs is that of Zwietering’s (Chem. Eng. Sci., 1958, 8, 244-253), consisting of visually inspecting the tank bottom and visually determining the impeller agitation speed at which the solids are observed to rest on the tank bottom for no more than 1-2 seconds before being swept away. This method is quite reliable, but a method …

Synchronous Generation And Coherent Control Of Extreme Wavelength Radiation And Ultrafast Spectroscopy, Aram Gragossian

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Recent progress in ultrafast laser science has made it possible to synthesize and control complex electromagnetic waveforms down to sub-femtosecond timescales. These tailored ultrashort laser pulses can generate coherent bursts of electromagnetic radiation in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and terahertz spectral regions with durations reaching the attosecond regime in the XUV region. This is accomplished by coherently controlling electronic motion in gas plasma targets. With these novel radiation sources, ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy can be performed on a large variety of materials. Knowledge of the spectral phase of an ultrashort pulse is crucial for many applications. There are a variety of …

Structure And Physical Properties Of Srniru5O11 Single Crystals: An R-Type Ferrite Based On Ordered Kagome Nets, L. Shlyk, Lance E. De Long, R. Niewa

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Single crystals of the R-type ferrite SrNiRu5O11 were grown from a chloride flux. The hexagonal crystal structure contains ruthenium located on distorted kagome nets. The low-temperature dc magnetic susceptibilities (χ⊥ and χ∥, perpendicular and parallel to the c axis, respectively) diverge as T−0.3, and do not exhibit any indication of long-range magnetic order down to 4.5 K. The electrical resistivity varies as T1.6 below 40 K, which is typical of non-Fermi liquids, and may originate from a competition between residual magnetic interactions among Ni2+ (S = 1) spins …

Field-Induced Formation And Growth Of Pillars On Films Of Bisphenol-A-Polycarbonate, Yu-Fan Chuang, Jyun-Siang Peng, Fuqian Yang, Donyau Chiang, Sanboh Lee Jan 2017

Field-Induced Formation And Growth Of Pillars On Films Of Bisphenol-A-Polycarbonate, Yu-Fan Chuang, Jyun-Siang Peng, Fuqian Yang, Donyau Chiang, Sanboh Lee

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

An electric field is used to construct pillars on films of bisphenol-A-polycarbonate (BPAPC) between two parallel electrodes. Both the size and density of the pillars are dependent on the film thickness. For the same experimental conditions, thicker films will lead to the formation of pillars of larger sizes and smaller densities. The time dependence of the average diameter of the pillars is found to be a linear function of the square root of the difference between the annealing time and incubation time. The temperature dependence of the temporal evolution of the pillars follows the Arrhenius relation with an activation enthalpy …

Multiscale Mechanistic Characterization Of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements, A. M. Feroze Rashid

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Superpave test methods are based on unmodified asphalt binders and mixes; researchers have reported limitations of these methods in evaluating modified binders. An Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) has the potential to determine morphology and nanomechanistic properties of modified and unmodified asphalt binders. In this study, different amounts of binders recovered from four selected reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) are blended with a virgin Performance Grade (PG) binder and tested by following Superpave tests and AFM techniques. Binders with high RAP are found to have more rutting resistance than the virgin binder but less cracking resistance due to their brittleness. Toward …

The Effects Of Using Noise Reduction Turbofan Engine Nozzle Designs On A Turbojet Engine, Donald Bartlett Jan 2017

The Effects Of Using Noise Reduction Turbofan Engine Nozzle Designs On A Turbojet Engine, Donald Bartlett

Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts

Abstract

Aircraft noise is a complex topic which is projected to increase with the increasing number of aircraft and size of the engines. Turbine-powered aircraft produce sounds that are considered pollutants at certain decibel levels. Turbofan engines are inherently quieter than turbojet engines for a given level of thrust. The purpose of this research is to determine if current turbofan noise reduction nozzles could reduce the amount of noise for turbojet engines at two different thrust levels. Three turbofan engine nozzles were designed and tested on a turbojet engine. Decibel levels of 30 frequencies for each of the nozzles were …
