Tunable Combline Filter And Balun: Design, Simulation, And Test, Daniel Alex Ramirez
Tunable Combline Filter And Balun: Design, Simulation, And Test, Daniel Alex Ramirez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Reconfigurable filters are an attractive solution for many military and commercial applications due to their ability to alter the partitioned frequency band in an RF system without requiring a bank of fixed filters. The onset of this technology has the potential to revolutionize the RF industry by allowing for agile devices which consume less size, weight, and power while providing greater performance. However, at the present state, reconfigurable filters present a reduction in performance when compared to filter banks. This has led to exciting research in the field of RF tunable filters.
For many applications, planar reconfigurable filters have been …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The system of upper high nickel alloying steel seal ring and lower high nickel alloying steel seal ring, installed in the grooves of turbine, can extend out and fit with the wall of valve cage, resulting in forming a good seal under the pressure. In the project, the failure steel seal ring is considered. This situation had threatened the safety of the whole steam turbine system. The purpose of this study is to identify the failure cause of the steel seal ring used in nuclear steam turbines. New high nickel steel alloy seal ring was compared with the failed seal …
Microwave Instrumentation And Sensing Techniques For Quantum Efficiency And Minority-Carrier Lifetime Measurements, Kyle Benjamin Lu
Microwave Instrumentation And Sensing Techniques For Quantum Efficiency And Minority-Carrier Lifetime Measurements, Kyle Benjamin Lu
Dissertations and Theses
A non-contact method characterizing the quantum efficiency of a solar cell using the microwave reflectance signature is presented in this thesis. Traditional solar cell quantum efficiency (QE) measurements are only possible near the completion of the fabrication process using contacts in direct physical connection with the metalized surface tabs to probe and extract charge carriers from the device. However, pressure within the solar metrology industry to report the spectral performance of the device earlier in the manufacturing process as part of the process control loop requires that a new non-contact method be developed. This thesis work contributes the development of …

With the increasing use of fission-type nuclear power generation, particularly high-levels radioactive nuclear waste are generated, so the safe use of nuclear energy requires proper disposal of high-level radioactive nuclear waste. The selected treatment method is deep geological disposal. Therefore, underground research laboratory (URL) to prepare for deep geological disposal will also be carried out. Corrosion of metallic materials, which are closely related to the safety of URL, is the focus of this research project. This study selected monitoring techniques for URL and developed a rough monitoring scheme for temperature and resistivity in URL. In this study, corrosion-temperature and corrosion-resistivity …
Adsorption Of Perfluorinated Compounds From Post-Emergency Response Wastewater, Christopher T. Schmidt
Adsorption Of Perfluorinated Compounds From Post-Emergency Response Wastewater, Christopher T. Schmidt
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the efficacy of granular activated carbon (GAC) as a method to treat water impacted with aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) after a firefighting response. Bench-top experiments were conducted and compared to field scale adsorber performance removing mg/L concentrations of PFAS in water contaminated with Military Specification AFFF. Batch tests compared four adsorbents, and determined Calgon F600 GAC and Rembind Plus mixed carbon media had the greatest perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) capacities. Additional batch isotherm experiments using AFFF and higher PFOS concentrations (mg/L) indicated larger amounts of GAC are required (>30mg/L) for effective removal. Full-scale testing simulated an …

Computational Optimization Under Uncertainty Of An Active Flow Control Jet, Luke A. Welch
Theses and Dissertations
Optimization under uncertainty is performed to determine the optimal parameters of an active flow control jet to impart robust control during transonic cruise. A steady blowing jet is optimized on an airfoil to impart a change in lift greater than or equal to that generated by traditional control surfaces. The design candidates are computationally evaluated using the NASA flow solver, FUN3D, under 20 unique combinations of angle of attack, Reynolds number, and Mach number in order to propagate model input uncertainty. The mean change in lift and the associated standard deviation are included in the optimization framework to help ensure …

Enhancing The Thermal Performance Of Temporary Fabric Shelters For The Advanced Energy Efficient Shelter System, Justin E. Eshleman
Theses and Dissertations
Investment in the commercial space industry has grown significantly over the past decade. This investment has led to a tremendous leap in capability for small satellite systems and a greater demand for small launch vehicles. At the same time, space system affordability is a point of emphasis within the Department of Defense (DoD) which raises the question: Can the DoD lower space access costs through the exploitation of the growing small satellite and small launch marketplace? We perform a financial analysis of newly developed small launch vehicles delivering a small satellite constellation to low earth orbit (LEO) to perform wideband …

Analysis Of Additively Manufactured Lattice Structures Using Finite Element Methods, Christopher A. Box
Theses and Dissertations
Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes are well known for their ability to fabricate parts with complex geometries. Lattice structures leverage this ability to create parts with high strength-to-weight ratio and other desirable structural qualities. This research presents a parameterized modeling tool using common Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and scripting software with which aggregated lattice structures can be analyzed, given different geometric properties and loading conditions. A full factorial Design of Experiments is run to explore the effects of various parameters on the strength of lattice structures. Experimental compressive strength results from three FDM-produced PLA lattices are discussed and compared to predictions …
Investigation Of Dynamic Store Separation Out Of A Weapons Bay Cavity Utilizing A Low Speed Wind Tunnel, Andrew D. Bower
Investigation Of Dynamic Store Separation Out Of A Weapons Bay Cavity Utilizing A Low Speed Wind Tunnel, Andrew D. Bower
Theses and Dissertations
Characterizing mission store trajectories as they separate from a weapons bay cavity is highly relevant to the Air Force mission. The flow around a weapons bay is unsteady. The unsteady flow can cause a mission store separation trajectory to be unpredictable, and such is the case for what some have termed a pitch bifurcation. Traditional wind tunnel testing is incapable of detecting a bifurcation because traditional wind tunnel testing records time-averaged data. In this study, an experimental testing system was developed and refined in order to support the time-accurate characterization of dynamic mission store separation events. A Motion Test Apparatus …
Framework For Industrial Control System Honeypot Network Traffic Generation, Htein A. Lin
Framework For Industrial Control System Honeypot Network Traffic Generation, Htein A. Lin
Theses and Dissertations
Defending critical infrastructure assets is an important but extremely difficult and expensive task. Historically, decoys have been used very effectively to distract attackers and in some cases convince an attacker to reveal their attack strategy. Several researchers have proposed the use of honeypots to protect programmable logic controllers, specifically those used to support critical infrastructure. However, most of these honeypot designs are static systems that wait for a would-be attacker. To be effective, honeypot decoys need to be as realistic as possible. This paper introduces a proof-of-concept honeypot network traffic generator that mimics genuine control systems. Experiments are conducted using …
A Study Of Iron-Nitrogen-Carbon Fuel Cell Catalysts: Chemistry – Nanostructure – Performance, Michael J. Workman
A Study Of Iron-Nitrogen-Carbon Fuel Cell Catalysts: Chemistry – Nanostructure – Performance, Michael J. Workman
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Fuel cells have the potential to be a pollution-free, low-cost, and energy efficient alternative to the internal combustion engine for transportation and small-scale stationary power applications. The current state of fuel cell technology has already achieved two of these three lofty goals. The remaining barrier to wide-scale deployment is the high cost, which is primarily caused by dependence on large amounts of platinum to catalyze the energy conversion reactions. To overcome this barrier and facilitate the integration of fuel cells into mainstream applications, research into a new class of catalyst materials that do not require platinum is needed.
There has …

Relating Film Cooling Performance Between Ambient And Near Engine Temperatures, Christopher J. Vorgert
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores multiple topics, including the relative importance of nondimensional parameters that relate film cooling performance within different temperature regimes and the effects of internal coolant flow and coolant temperature on overall film cooling effectiveness. A Hastelloy model representative of a turbine blade was utilized for IR tests. Near engine temperatures were produced via premixed propane and air combustion in a Well-Stirred Reactor (WSR) with air supplied as the film coolant gas. Near ambient conditions used heated air for freestream flow and carbon dioxide, argon, or air as film coolant gases. It was found that even with multiple matched …

The purpose of this thesis is to reinforce and build upon past efforts identifying and demonstrating the need to better represent logistic capabilities and constraints within the realm of wargaming, war planning, and other analyses requiring the modeling of Air Force combat operations. We develop a framework for the porting of relevant logistic information and requirements from a reliable data source (LCOM- ATK) into a discrete event simulation environment (SIMIO), providing a simulation model for enhanced and robust analyses. The simulation we create explicitly reflects (for a selected subset of Work Unit Codes) the maintenance manpower, resources, and parts required …
Investigating Analytical And Numerical Methods To Predict Satellite Orbits Using Two-Line Element Sets, Adam T. Rich
Investigating Analytical And Numerical Methods To Predict Satellite Orbits Using Two-Line Element Sets, Adam T. Rich
Theses and Dissertations
As Low Earth Orbit (LEO) contains an ever-increasing number of objects, the prediction of future object positions must be precise in order to avoid collisions. Object positions are distributed in two-line element (TLE) sets and are generated using the analytical propagator known as Simplified General Perturbations 4 (SGP4). However, a numerical integrator called Special Perturbations (SP) provides an alternative approach to TLE generation and propagation. In this thesis, TLE accuracy was determined with both models, and the length of time that a single element set can provide valid information was also established. With two-line element sets as data, comparisons were …

Analysis Of Human And Agent Characteristics On Human-Agent Team Performance And Trust, Anthony J. Hillesheim
Theses and Dissertations
The human-agent team represents a new construct in how the United States Department of Defense is orchestrating mission planning and mission accomplishment. In order for mission planning and accomplishment to be successful, several requirements must be met: a firm understanding of human trust in automated agents, how human and automated agent characteristics influence human-agent team performance, and how humans behave. This thesis applies a combination of modeling techniques and human experimentation to understand the concepts aforementioned. The modeling techniques used include static modeling in SysML activity diagrams and dynamic modeling of both human and agent behavior in IMPRINT. Additionally, this …
Sound Based Positioning, David L. Weathers
Sound Based Positioning, David L. Weathers
Theses and Dissertations
With a growing interest in non-GPS positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), sound based positioning provides a precise way to locate both sound sources and microphones through audible signals of opportunity (SoOPs). Exploiting SoOPs allows for passive location estimation. But, attributing each signal to a specific source location when signals are simultaneously emitting proves problematic. Using an array of microphones, unique SoOPs are identified and located through steered response beamforming. Sound source signals are then isolated through time-frequency masking to provide clear reference stations by which to estimate the location of a separate microphone through time difference of arrival measurements. Results …

Making Light-Weight Mg-Metal Laminated Nanocomposites, Soodabeh Azadehranjbar, Xinyan Xie, Jeffrey E. Shield, Jian Wang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Magnesium is the lightest of all the engineering metals. Replacing steel structural materials with Mg-based materials in automotive applications would boost fuel. However, conventional Mg alloys typically suffer from low strength and poor deformability due to very few slip systems and easy twinning. Alloying Mg with other materials and microstructural engineering are promising approaches to increase ductility and strength of Mg. According to Wang et al., interfaces with low energy and high coherency may effectively constrict the nucleation of twins in Mg. In this work, Mg-metal multilayered nanocomposites will be produced by melt spinning procedure and the layers’ mechanical properties …
Simulation Studies On Ecg Vector Dipole Extraction In Liquid Medium, Pratheek Michael
Simulation Studies On Ecg Vector Dipole Extraction In Liquid Medium, Pratheek Michael
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
To circumvent some inherent problems in the conventional ECG, this research reinvestigates an ‘unassisted’ approach which enables ECG measurement without the placement of leads on the body. Employed in this research is a widely accepted assumption that the electrical activity of the heart may be represented, largely, by a 3-D time-varying current dipole (3D-CD). From the PhysioBank database, mECG and fECG data were obtained, and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) was performed to estimate the time-varying Vector ECG dipole. To determine the sensing matrix responsible for transforming the activity of the 3D-CD into the potential distribution on the surface of the …

We develop a multi-fluid model for a ternary polymer solution using the Rayleighian formalism of Doi and Onuki, and give an efficient pseudo-spectral method for solving both the diffusion and momentum equations that result. Subsequently, we find that the numerical simulation is capable of describing systems at the micron length-scale and easily reaches millisecond time-scales. In addition, we characterize the model thermodynamics and kinetics including the (i) phase behavior, (ii) structure of the interfaces, (iii) mutual diffusion coefficients, (iv) bulk spinodal decomposition kinetics with and without hydrodynamics and (v) spinodal decomposition in the presence of an interface with a non-solvent …
Toxicological Differences Between Perfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) Isomers Using Developmental Biomarkers, Gabriel A. Cantu
Toxicological Differences Between Perfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) Isomers Using Developmental Biomarkers, Gabriel A. Cantu
Theses and Dissertations
Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are metabolically stable synthetic chemicals that have been manufactured for commercial and industrial purposes since the 1950s. PFAS possess surfactant properties that make them ideal to fight hydrocarbon fires and are therefore present in aqueous film forming foams (AFFF). Furthermore, AFFF may contain blends of both linear and branched PFAS isomers. Research suggests that branched PFAS isomers have greater relative placental transfer efficiencies than their linear counterpart, but few studies have evaluated their toxicity. Therefore, the sustained use of AFFF in the U.S. Air Force presents a risk of branched PFAS exposures in pregnant females. This study …
A Portfolio Decision Analysis Study For Improving Consequence Of Facility Failure Indices, Michael J. Blaess
A Portfolio Decision Analysis Study For Improving Consequence Of Facility Failure Indices, Michael J. Blaess
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force partially integrated the Mission Dependency Index (MDI) into its portfolio project selection model by assigning an MDI value to a facility type or real property category code (CATCODE) in lieu of assigning a unique MDI value to each facility through a structured interview process. This took an initial step to improve the Air Forces asset management practices; however, it failed to accurately capture the consequence of facility failure in some cases. Although a process to adjudicate the MDI value of individual facilities was created, it is still unknown how much the surveyed MDI value deviates …
Development Of The Architecture Cost Effectiveness Framework And Application To Open Systems Architectures, Donald A. Barrett
Development Of The Architecture Cost Effectiveness Framework And Application To Open Systems Architectures, Donald A. Barrett
Theses and Dissertations
The Modular Open System Approach (MOSA) is an initiative to, among other things, reduce cost and schedule for acquisitions programs. While programs have experienced savings using MOSA, the majority of programs have not, in part due to a lack of a logical method for evaluating architecture alternatives. This research develops the Architecture Cost Effectiveness Framework (ACEF), which combines multi-attribute utility analysis with cost effectiveness analysis throughout the program lifecycle. Step 1 is the establishment of a business strategy that includes an Attribute Hierarchy of selected operational requirements. The business strategy also defines Lifecycle Utility Reference Profiles (LURPs) that document changing …
A Framework For Categorization Of Industrial Control System Cyber Training Environments, Evan G. Plumley
A Framework For Categorization Of Industrial Control System Cyber Training Environments, Evan G. Plumley
Theses and Dissertations
First responders and professionals in hazardous occupations undergo training and evaluations for the purpose of mitigating risk and damage. For example, helicopter pilots train with multiple categorized simulations that increase in complexity before flying a real aircraft. However in the industrial control cyber incident response domain, where incident response professionals help detect, respond and recover from cyber incidents, no official categorization of training environments exist. To address this gap, this thesis provides a categorization of industrial control training environments based on realism. Four levels of environments are proposed and mapped to Blooms Taxonomy. This categorization will help organizations determine which …
An Investigation Into The Indicators Of A Successful Total Force Association, Greg E. Hoyt
An Investigation Into The Indicators Of A Successful Total Force Association, Greg E. Hoyt
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force, since adopting and subsequently developing the Total Force concept in the early 1970s, has not thoroughly outlined clear objectives by which the progress toward and realization of this strategic vision should be defined and measured. Without clear definition, direction, and method of evaluation, the ability to credibly claim any subsequent successes or failures in the pursuit of this vision become vulnerable to challenge. Indeed, the mere claim that a single, clear vision exists may be challenged. The Total Force concepts degree of success has, on multiple occasions through its history, been critiqued with the most recent instance …
Real-Time Heuristic Algorithms For The Static Weapon-Target Assignment Problem, Alexander G. Kline
Real-Time Heuristic Algorithms For The Static Weapon-Target Assignment Problem, Alexander G. Kline
Theses and Dissertations
The problem of targeting and engaging individual missiles (targets) with an arsenal of interceptors (weapons) is known as the weapon target assignment problem. As many solution techniques are based upon a transformation of the objective function, their final solutions rarely produce optimal solutions. We propose a nonlinear branch and bound algorithm to provide the first optimization approach to the untransformed problem found in the literature. Further, we propose a new heuristic based upon the branch and bound algorithm which dominates other heuristics explored in optimality gap. We also propose a heuristic based upon the optimal solution to the quiz problem …
Refugees In Urban Environments: Social, Economic, And Infrastructure Impacts, Garrett L. Jameson
Refugees In Urban Environments: Social, Economic, And Infrastructure Impacts, Garrett L. Jameson
Theses and Dissertations
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has estimated that in 2015 there were 21.3 million refugees worldwide; it is estimated that 1.8 million of these persons were newly displaced during 2015. As refugees leave their country to seek the protection of another nation's government, they generally flow into urban areas. The impact of this flow on cities and on the refugees, themselves, is not fully understood. This study is focused on the impact of government policy decisions on the social, legal, and economic integration of refugees within an urban environment. Investigation into this topic resulted in the development of …
Cost Versus Risk: The Policy Of Nuclear Weapon Maintenance Of Tritium Based Limited Life Components, Michael P. Mason

Shaping the next century of global politics and power, United States-China relations comprise one of the most significant bilateral relationships in the world. A new era of unrestricted warfare is one example of how aggression from China could be very costly for the United States. The growth of democratic ideals within China decreases the risk of detrimental impacts according to democratic peace theory. This thesis explores a multifaceted system of relationships that regulate the diffusion of democratic ideology within China, as defined by a proxy-measure characterized as human rights by Freedom House. Relative deprivation theory coupled with an adapted Bass …
An Approximate Dynamic Programming Approach For Comparing Firing Solutions In A Networked Air Defense Environment, Daniel S. Summers
An Approximate Dynamic Programming Approach For Comparing Firing Solutions In A Networked Air Defense Environment, Daniel S. Summers
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Army currently employs a shoot-shoot-look firing policy for air defense. As the Army moves to a networked defense-in-depth strategy, this policy will not provide optimal results for managing interceptor inventories in a conflict to minimize the damage to defended assets. The objective for air and missile defense is to identify the firing policy for interceptor allocation that minimizes expected total cost of damage to defended assets. This dynamic weapon target assignment problem is formulated first as a Markov decision process (MDP) and then approximate dynamic programming (ADP) is used to solve problem instances based on a representative …
