Development Of An Atlas-Based Segmentation Of Cranial Nerves Using Shape-Aware Discrete Deformable Models For Neurosurgical Planning And Simulation, Sharmin Sultana

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Twelve pairs of cranial nerves arise from the brain or brainstem and control our sensory functions such as vision, hearing, smell and taste as well as several motor functions to the head and neck including facial expressions and eye movement. Often, these cranial nerves are difficult to detect in MRI data, and thus represent problems in neurosurgery planning and simulation, due to their thin anatomical structure, in the face of low imaging resolution as well as image artifacts. As a result, they may be at risk in neurosurgical procedures around the skull base, which might have dire consequences such as …

A Post-Accident Analysis Of Civil Remotely-Piloted Aircraft System Accidents And Incidents, Graham Wild, Kellie Gavin, John Murray, Jose Silva, Glenn Baxter

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

A sample of 152 accidents and incidents involving Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, more commonly referred to as "drones", have been analysed. The data was collected from a 10-year period, 2006 to 2015, conveniently sourced from a limited population owing to the scarcity of reports. Results indicate that safety occurrences involving Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) have a significantly different distribution of contributing factors when sorted into distinct categories. This provides a thorough and up-to-date characterization of the safety deficiencies specific to RPAS. In turn, this contributes to the development of adequate safety management systems applicable to the RPAS sector. The …

Corrosion Behaviour Of Selective Laser Melted Ti-Tib Biocomposite In Simulated Body Fluid, Yang Chen, Junxi Zhang, Nianwei Dai, Peng Qin, Hooyar Attar, Laichang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The corrosion behaviour of CP-Ti and Ti-TiB composite produced by selective laser melting (SLM) in the artificial simulated body fluid (Hank's solution) at body temperature was investigated systematically by using electrochemical measurements (potentiodynamic polarisation curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), together with some detailed structural characterisations. The results demonstrate that SLM-produced Ti-TiB composite samples possess better corrosion resistance than SLM-produced CP-Ti samples in Hank's solution. Due to these tiny TiB and TiB2 particles acting as the micro-cathode uniformly distributing in titanium matrix, anodic dissolution of titanium matrix in the corrosion process is prominently facilitated in early stages, followed by rapid …

Rate-Limited Mass Transfer Of Trichloroethene, Deza R. Irving Apr 2017

Rate-Limited Mass Transfer Of Trichloroethene, Deza R. Irving

Civil and Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Trichloroethene (TCE) is a volatile and toxic contaminant commonly found in the subsurface. To help reduce the effects of this contaminant, it is important to understand the transport and fate behavior of TCE through the subsurface. As groundwater fills the void spaces of a porous media contaminated with pure-phase TCE, the TCE will dissolve into the water, contaminating the groundwater. It was expected that this dissolution would follow a first-order mass transfer process, suggesting that the rate of dissolution of TCE is dependent on the mass of TCE present in solution. The purpose of this study was to characterize the …

Development And Training Of A Neural Controller For Hind Leg Walking In A Dog Robot, Alexander J. Hunt, Nicholas Szczecinski, Roger Quinn

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Animals dynamically adapt to varying terrain and small perturbations with remarkable ease. These adaptations arise from complex interactions between the environment and biomechanical and neural components of the animal’s body and nervous system. Research into mammalian locomotion has resulted in several neural and neuro-mechanical models, some of which have been tested in simulation, but few “synthetic nervous systems” have been implemented in physical hardware models of animal systems. One reason is that the implementation into a physical system is not straightforward. For example, it is difficult to make robotic actuators and sensors that model those in the animal. Therefore, even …

Memristive crossbars have become a popular means for realizing unsupervised and supervised learning techniques. Often, to preserve mathematical rigor, the crossbar itself is separated from the neuron capacitors. In this work, we sought to simplify the design, removing extraneous components to consume significantly lower power at a minimal cost of accuracy. This work provides derivations for the design of such a network, named the Simple Spiking Locally Competitive Algorithm, or SSLCA, as well as CMOS designs and results on the CIFAR and MNIST datasets. Compared to a non-spiking model which scored 33% on CIFAR-10 with a single-layer classifier, this hardware …

Speaker-Specific Adaptation Of Maeda Synthesis Parameters For Auditory Feedback, Joseph Vonderhaar Apr 2017

Speaker-Specific Adaptation Of Maeda Synthesis Parameters For Auditory Feedback, Joseph Vonderhaar

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The Real-time Articulatory Speech Synthesizer (RASS) is a research tool in the Marquette Speech and Swallowing lab that simultaneously collects acoustic and articulatory data from human participants. The system is used to study acoustic-to-articulatory inversion, articulatory-to-acoustic synthesis mapping, and the effects of real-time acoustic feedback. Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) is utilized to collect position data via sensors placed in a subject’s mouth. These kinematic data are then converted into a set of synthesis parameters that controls an articulatory speech synthesizer, which in turn generates an acoustic waveform matching the associated kinematics. Independently from RASS, the synthesized acoustic waveform can be further …

Compression Of Virtual-Machine Memory In Dynamic Malware Analysis, James E. Fowler Ph.D. Mar 2017

Compression Of Virtual-Machine Memory In Dynamic Malware Analysis, James E. Fowler Ph.D.

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Lossless compression of memory dumps from virtual machines that run malware samples is considered with the goal of significantly reducing archival costs in dynamic-malware-analysis applications. Given that, in such dynamic-analysis scenarios, malware samples are typically run in virtual machines just long enough to activate any self-decryption or other detection- avoidance maneuvers, the virtual-machine memory typically changes little from that of the baseline state, with the difference being attributable in large degree to the loading of additional executables and libraries. Consequently, delta coding is proposed to compress the current virtual-machine memory dump by coding its differences with respect to a predicted …
