Sustainable Recharge Of Flint Lake, Melene Agakanian, Cathy Cantoni

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

At the retreat center in San Juan Bautista, run by the Franciscan brothers, there is a dry pond that at one time was full of water. Over time, however, the pond has lost water due to the effects of the California drought. In order to bring back the aesthetics of the St. Francis Retreat Center and restore the habitat, this project allows for the design of a pump and piping system that will bring water from a well and recharge the pond, working in tandem with another senior design group for the water purification of the well. The proposed solution …

Tracking Characteristics Of Tracer Particles For Piv Measurements In Supersonic Flows, Fang Chen, Hong Liu, Zifeng Yang, Hui Hu

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The tracking characteristics of tracer particles for particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in supersonic flows were investigated. The experimental tests were conducted at Mach number 4 in Multi-Mach Wind Tunnel (MMWT) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The motion of tracer particles carried by the supersonic flow across shockwaves was theoretically modelled, and then their aerodynamic characteristics with compressibility and rarefaction effects were evaluated. According to the proposed selection criterion of tracer particles, the PIV measured results clearly identified that the shockwave amplitude is in good agreement with theory and Schlieren visualizations. For the tracer particles in nanoscales, their effective aerodynamic …

Improvement Of Fluorescence-Based Microfluidic Dna Analyzers, Collin Tranter Apr 2017

Improvement Of Fluorescence-Based Microfluidic Dna Analyzers, Collin Tranter

Doctoral Dissertations

A tremendous effort continues in the development of micro-total-analysis-systems; in support of this, many chemical passivation methods have been developed to enhance the biocompatibility of such microfluidic systems. However, the suitability of these passivation techniques to many fluorescence-based assays still remains inconsistent. This part of this work is focused on the performance of a third generation intercalating DNA dye when used within microfluidic devices treated with a select variety of passivating coatings. The results of these tests indicate that passivation coatings which are intended to shed DNA based on electrostatic repulsion will in fact imbibe the fluorescent DNA intercalating dye …

High Performance Computing Simulations To Identify Process Parameter Designs For Profitable Titanium Machining, Mathew Kuttolamadom, Joshua Jones, Laine Mears, James Von Oehsen, Thomas Kurfess, John Ziegert

Publications

The objective of this paper was to conduct a study of the multi-level multi-variable design space in titanium machining through high performance computing (HPC) simulations that was otherwise too vast to be explored by physical experiments alone. For tool wear-based performance metrics, this resulted in a validated set of machining parameters for achieving profitable material removal rates (MRR) (optimized cost of processing and tooling) across multiple operational configurations, alloys, tool geometries, and process conditions. The approach was to include all machining-related variables and their distributions available within the software as inputs to finite-element models (FEM) of the machining process. The …

Numerical Simulations Of Intrusive Gravity Currents Interacting With A Bottom-Mounted Obstacle In A Continuously Stratified Ambient, Jian Zhou, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, the flow dynamics of intrusive gravity currents past a bottom-mounted obstacle were investigated using highly resolved numerical simulations. The propagation dynamics of a classic intrusive gravity current was first simulated in order to validate the numerical model with previous laboratory experiments. A bottom-mounted obstacle with a varying non-dimensional height of D~ = D/ H, where D is the obstacle height and H is the total flow depth, was then added to the problem in order to study the downstream flow pattern of the intrusive gravity current. For short obstacles, the intrusion re-established itself downstream without much distortion. …

Property Sensitivity Study For Oil Recovery In The Bakken, Daniel Beach Apr 2017

Property Sensitivity Study For Oil Recovery In The Bakken, Daniel Beach

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The upstream (exploration and production) end of the petroleum industry has experienced tremendous success over the past fifteen years by employing innovative ways to drill and stimulate new wells thereby greatly increasing production. Based upon these successes, there has been a shift to unconventional wells, where the cost for drilling and completing wells can be much more expensive. Most unconventional wells target tight rock formations having low permeability and porosity. As a result, these reservoirs require enhanced stimulation to improve recovery operations to establish profitable oil or gas production. These wells are drilled horizontally to maximize contact area in the …

Repair And Regeneration Of Chondral Defects: An In Vitro Study Demonstrating Feasibility And Mechanism Under Low Intensity Ultrasound, Neety Sahu, Anuradha Subramanian

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Holistic repair of damaged cartilage remains an unsolved biomedical problem. Current methods that employ microfracture (MF) or autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACT) or tissue engineered strategies yield inferior repaired cartilage (Fig. 1). Lack of chondroinductive factors at the site of injury, in vivo, has been identified as a factor that limits repair. Clinically amenable strategies that can improve repair are desired. A novel clinically translatable repair strategy based on low-intensity-ultrasound (US) is proposed (Fig.2). Differently from all approaches that use US, our approach employs US at the cell resonant frequency where bioeffects are maximized. We have shown that US impacts the …

Cognitive Anti-Jamming Framework With Self-Interference Cancellation On A Wideband Autonomous Cognitive Radio, Stephen J. Machuzak Apr 2017

Cognitive Anti-Jamming Framework With Self-Interference Cancellation On A Wideband Autonomous Cognitive Radio, Stephen J. Machuzak

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

With crowded usage of the wireless spectrum, full-duplex wireless systems are introduced to increase bandwidth efficiency by transmitting and receiving on the same frequency band at the same time. Full-duplex communication is a promising solution for greater wireless communications efficiency but, it requires solving the problem of self-interference. Self- Interference cancellation is the process of canceling a radio’s own transmission signal that interferes with its sensed signal which can block desired outside signals of interest. The focus of this thesis is to design and implement a novel self-interference cancellation method for the Wide-band Autonomous Cognitive Radio (WACR) with anti-jamming abil- …

Experiments were performed to evaluate the technical feasibility of selectively separating selected rare earth halides (bromides and chlorides) using a volatilization and condensation technique. Initially, optimum chloridizing and bromidizing roast parameters were secured in studies performed on reagent grade rare earth oxide samples and subsequently confirmed in tests performed on mineral ore and concentrate samples. The volatilization and condensation experiments were performed by placing the subject rare earth halide samples in an argon-purged multiple-zone tube furnace wherein the temperature profile was controlled to establish separate vaporization and condensation regions. Following each experiment, condensate and solid residue samples were analyzed to …

Numerical And Experimental Studies On Coastal Marsh Erosion Under Hurricane Induced Wave And Current, Minhaz M. Shahriar Apr 2017

Numerical And Experimental Studies On Coastal Marsh Erosion Under Hurricane Induced Wave And Current, Minhaz M. Shahriar

Doctoral Dissertations

Considering the past history and future risks of hurricanes in the USA, well understood storm protection plans are needed to shelter the important areas of the population and economy, especially within southeastern Louisiana. It is extensively assumed that marshes offer protection from hurricane though the degree of this protection is not well measured or understood due to the complex physics involved in this overall system. Moreover, marshes experience significant erosion while serving as a barrier for important areas. Consequently, a particular method to quantify the effects on marshes during a coastal hurricane period is necessary to mitigate major marsh loss. …

Centralized Control For Dc Microgrid Using Finite State Machine, Mahmoud Saleh, Yusef Esa, Ahmed Mohamed

Publications and Research

In this paper, an autonomous communication-based centralized control for DC microgrids (MG) has been developed and implemented. The proposed controller enables smooth transition between various operating modes. Finite state machine (FSM) has been used to mathematically describe the various operating modes (states), and events that may lead to mode changes (transitions). Therefore, the developed centralized controller aims at optimizing the performance of MG during all possible operational scenarios, while maintaining its reliability and stability. Results of selected cases have been presented. These results show stable transition between modes, verifying the validity and applicability of the proposed controller.

Workplace Posture Assessment And Biofeedback With Kinect, Matthew Crussell Apr 2017

Workplace Posture Assessment And Biofeedback With Kinect, Matthew Crussell

Master's Theses

With the prevalence of computing, many workers today are confined to desk within an office. By sitting in these positions for long periods of time, workers are prone to develop one of many musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as carpal tunnel syndrome. In order to prevent MSDs in the long term, workers must employ good sitting habits. One promising method to ensure good workplace posture is through camera monitoring. To date, camera systems have been used in determining posture in a clean environment. However, an occluded and cluttered background, which is typical in an office setting, imposes a great challenge for …

A Balanced Approach To Adaptive Probability Density Estimation, Julio Kovacs, Cailee Helmick, Willy Wriggers Apr 2017

A Balanced Approach To Adaptive Probability Density Estimation, Julio Kovacs, Cailee Helmick, Willy Wriggers

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Our development of a Fast (Mutual) Information Matching (FIM) of molecular dynamics time series data led us to the general problem of how to accurately estimate the probability density function of a random variable, especially in cases of very uneven samples. Here, we propose a novel Balanced Adaptive Density Estimation (BADE) method that effectively optimizes the amount of smoothing at each point. To do this, BADE relies on an efficient nearest-neighbor search which results in good scaling for large data sizes. Our tests on simulated data show that BADE exhibits equal or better accuracy than existing methods, and visual tests …

In-Service Evaluation Of High Tension Cable Barrier Systems, Brian K. Howell, Kenneth R. Agent, Jeff Jasper, William Nicholas Staats Apr 2017

In-Service Evaluation Of High Tension Cable Barrier Systems, Brian K. Howell, Kenneth R. Agent, Jeff Jasper, William Nicholas Staats

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has installed hundreds of miles of high-tension cable median barrier (CMB) as a safety innovation. The usage of CMB aids in the prevention of crossover crashes, where a vehicle departs the roadway on the left shoulder, crosses the median, and enters the opposing lane(s) of traffic. KYTC officials have questioned whether all three barrier products perform similarly. Some installed cable barrier systems have lost tension across the entire cable length after a single vehicle impact. If a second vehicle were to strike the cable barrier system in a location other than the damaged area of the …
