Design And Test Of 3d Printed Lenses For Sub-Thz Radiation, Justin Patterson
Design And Test Of 3d Printed Lenses For Sub-Thz Radiation, Justin Patterson
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
The terahertz gap in the electromagnetic spectrum provides promising advantages for applications such as increased airport security and medical diagnosis. Quasi-optical systems used to study THz radiation require multiple mirrors or lenses, which can be quite costly. In order to manipulate THz beams we investigated production of inexpensive lenses using additive 3D printing. 3D printing technology promises to be not only accessible and inexpensive, but should also enable quick experimentation with different lens designs. The Picometrix time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) system was used to characterize 3D printable plastics. The absorption coefficient and refractive index were analyzed from 0.2 to 2 THz …
The Effect Of Plasma On Graphene Quality In An Inductively Couple Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor, Brendan Coyne
The Effect Of Plasma On Graphene Quality In An Inductively Couple Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor, Brendan Coyne
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Despite continued interest in research and application development, full scale graphene production is still limited by many factors including prohibitively high growth temperature requirements. Extremely high quality graphene growth is possible at high temperatures using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Use of an inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICP CVD) reactor with the benefit of precursor gas decomposition through plasma generation, may provide possibility to reduce growth temperature. Herein, we report plasma’s effects on graphene growth by comparing growths of increasing power supplied to plasma generation and changes in precursor gas ratios. Plasma composition was characterized by ultraviolet and visible …
Conditional Averaging And Classification In The Near Wake Of A Wind Turbine Array Boundary Layer, Sarah E. Smith
Conditional Averaging And Classification In The Near Wake Of A Wind Turbine Array Boundary Layer, Sarah E. Smith
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Flow perturbation induced by interaction with a turbine rotor produces considerable turbulence which can alter the productivity of subsequent units within a wind farm. Previous methods have characterized near wake vorticity of a single turbine as well as recovery distance for various turbine array configurations. This study aims to build from previous methods of analysis from the perspective of the rotor well within a turbine array and develop a model to examine points of significant imposition in relation to rotational effects. Hot wire anemometry was employed downstream of a turbine located in the middle of the third row in a …

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
According to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST, 2012), there is a need to produce one million more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) graduates in the U.S. over the next decade. Thus, more students must be recruited into and retained in STEM degrees of study. Because faculty are considered influential in students' choices to pursue and remain in STEM disciplines, we interviewed university STEM faculty in order to identify their perceptions of student recruitment and retention in STEM fields. Our data indicate that faculty are generally unaware of or not worried about the need to …

While swarms that execute decisions are well known in the swarm community, swarms that exhibit this capability a priori have never before been achieved. We demonstrate a methodology, based on the Hamiltonian method of swarm design, that enables the design and implementation of swarms that exhibit decision-making capability. We develop the theoretical structure of the method and apply it to the development of an ant algorithm and a swarm capable of deciding whether its density exceeds a specific predetermined value. The swarm designs are validated in simulation.

Estimation Of Localized Ideal Oximetry Sensor Lag Via Oxygen Desaturation-Disordered Breathing Event Cross-Correlation, Brian Snider, A Kain
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
In previous work, we attempted to identify events using sensor data from full-night polysomnography studies using a global 20-second oximetry sensor lag across all studies. However, we observed that oxygen desaturation onset trailed the corresponding human expert-labeled events by varying amounts of time, even within the same study. In this work, we estimate the localized ideal oximetry (SpO2) sensor lag using the cross-correlation between the labeled disordered breathing event and the observed desaturation.

Recent Progress In Template-Assisted Synthesis Of Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbons For Oxygen Electroreduction, Wenhan Niu, Ligui Li, Shaowei Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Nitrogen (N)-doped porous carbons are potential alternatives to precious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathodes of proton exchange membrane fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Template-assisted synthesis has been used extensively as a robust and versatile method in the preparation of such carbon catalysts, where the ORR activity has been found to be dependent on various structural parameters, such as the concentrations and molecular configurations of the dopants, and the porosity, surface accessibility and electrical conductivity of the carbon materials. In this review, we summarize recent progress in this area of research focusing on the design, preparation …

Reconstruction Of Distributions Of Nanoparticles Or Electroactive Nano-Components In Electrochemical Arrays Based On Chronoamperometric Data, Alexander Oleinick, Oleksii Sliusarenko, Irina Svir, Christian Amatore
Journal of Electrochemistry
The main scope of this work was to elaborate and test a simple mathematical and numerical procedure for reconstructing the probability density distributions f(ρ) characterizing the distribution of electroactive or electrocatalytic nano-components present or deposited on the electrochemically-inert surface of a planar conductor based on the time-dependent chronoamperometric responses of the corresponding electrochemical array. The mathematical and numerical validity of the procedure was established for three types of arrays (one periodical, two involving random dispersions) involving near-spherical nano-components dispersed on a flat surface. Indeed, altogether, these three types represent most 2D-experimental electrochemical nano-arrays used for analytical or electrocatalytic purposes. This …

The design of efficient, durable, and earth-abundant electrocatalysts via environmentally compatible strategies for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a vital for energy conversion processes. Herein we report a facile approach for the fabrication of low-cost and earth abundant metal catalysts, including iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), CoNi, and CoFe nanoparticles (NPs) on titanium (Ti) substrates through a one-step electrochemical deposition. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrocopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical techniques were employed to characterize these nanoparticles. Our electrochemical results revealed that among the five synthesized nanomaterials, the …

Resistive-Pulse Analysis Of Single Phospholipid Vesicles Using Quartz Nanochannels, Jonathan T. Cox, Bo Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
We report the uses of resistive-pulse method and quartz nanochannels for the detection and size analysis of single vesicles. Cylindrical shape quartz nanochannels have been used to detect single phospholipid vesicles ranging from 100 to 300 nm and polystyrene nanoparticles ranging from 170 to 400 nm in diameter. Translocations of single vesicles and nanoparticle were detected as individual square current pulses, which could be used to determine particle size. Our results show excellent agreement between the particle/vesicle sizes obtained from nanochannels and those from dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This electronic-based method was found to be …

Impact Of Nafion Loading And Anion Adsorption On The Synthesis Of Pt Monolayer Core-Shell Catalysts, Lijun Yang, Dustin Banham, Elod Gyenge, Siyu Ye
Journal of Electrochemistry
Carbon supported palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were used as a model core material for the synthesis of platinum (Pt) monolayer core-shell catalysts using rotating disk electrode method and a copper (Cu) under potential deposition technique. The impact of Nafion on the synthesis process was revealed by electrochemical testing with various Nafion contents. The existence of Nafion influenced the Cu under potential deposition, galvanic replacement and eventually the oxygen reduction reaction activity of the core-shell catalyst. However, as long as the Nafion content was less than 5 wt% in the test film, adding Nafion could help to bind catalyst onto the surface …

Comparison Of Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity Of Pt-Alloy Nanocubes, Yongan Tang, Lin Dai, Shouzhong Zou
Journal of Electrochemistry
Alloying Pt with the first row non-noble transition metals has been demonstrated to increase the catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is the cathode reaction of the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and metal-air batteries. However, how much the ORR activity improvement comes from the alloying elements remains controversial. In this paper, the nanocubes of PtMn, PtFe, PtCo, and PtNi with the similar size and composition were prepared and their ORR activities were explored, in order to investigate the effects of alloying elements on the catalytic activity. The use of cubic shape particles minimizes the contribution to …

The Agile Approach In Pharmaceutical Software Development, Priyal Bhargava
Honors Scholar Theses
The Agile development model is increasingly being adopted by the pharmaceutical industry for software development. Currently, there are several software projects under development by pharmaceutical companies that are using the Agile process. Other methodologies such as the Waterfall process, a traditional approach to project management, have evolved over time and been compared against the Agile method. Also there are conflicts of interest which should be taken into consideration when in a pharmaceutical setting such as abiding by FDA regulations. In addition, Agile’s sub-divisional approaches add to the versatility of how this iterative approach is applied in the pharmaceutical industry. The …

Patient-Derived Hydrogel As A Sacrificial Matrix For Efficient Cell Loading, Shalmli U. Joshi
Honors Scholar Theses
The field of tissue engineering focuses on delivering patient-derived stem cells to the body through the use of degradable biomaterials, such as hydrogels, which are infused into engineered scaffolds. Hydrogels act as templates to support and guide cells towards the regeneration of new tissue. In this study, we introduce a completely intraoperative procedure for obtaining a fibrin hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. In the past, fibrin hydrogel has been commonly formed by combining fibrinogen protein with animal-derived thrombin. Instead, we have developed an automated, and therefore reproducible, protocol to isolate and form fibrin hydrogel without the use of animal-derived thrombin. …

The productivity of bioengineered cell factories is limited by inefficiencies in nutrient delivery and waste and product removal. Current solution approaches explore changes in the physical configurations of the bioreactors. This work investigates the possibilities of exploiting self-organizing vascular networks to support producer cells within the factory. A computational model simulates de novo vascular development of endothelial-like cells and the resultant network functioning to deliver nutrients and extract product and waste from the cell culture. Microbial factories with vascular networks are evaluated for their scalability, robustness, and productivity compared to the cell factories without a vascular network. Initial studies demonstrate …
