Algae can synthesize, accumulate and store large amounts of lipids in its cells, which holds immense potential as a renewable source of biodiesel. In this work, we have developed and validated a GC–MS method for quantitation of fatty acids and glycerolipids in forms of fatty acid methyl esters derived from algae biomass. Algae Scenedesmus dimorphus drymass was pulverized by mortar and pestle, then extracted by the modified Folch method and fractionated into free fatty acids and glycerolipids on aminopropyl solid-phase extraction cartridges. Fatty acid methyl esters were produced by an optimized one-step esterification of fatty acids and transesterification of glycerolipids …

Developing Sustainable Rice Production Through Image Classification, Parker R. Fitzgerald May 2017

Developing Sustainable Rice Production Through Image Classification, Parker R. Fitzgerald

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The agricultural industry’s continued success is critical to our future. However, many agricultural practices—specifically rice farming—are currently based on unsustainable methods. The processes used in rice farming consume water at an unsupportable rate, and, consequently, are serious contributors to rising emission levels. Several alternative growing methods have been introduced, and one of the most promising candidates is Alternative Wetting and Drying (AWD). An obstacle encountered by proponents of these methods comes in implementation. Studies have shown AWD is more successful in fields with higher leveling precision. The research in this study works to create a stepping stone for farmers to …

A Quantitative Model For Truck Parking Utilization With Hours Of Service Regulations, Alexis Christine Gaddy May 2017

A Quantitative Model For Truck Parking Utilization With Hours Of Service Regulations, Alexis Christine Gaddy

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Continual growth in traffic volume on U.S. Highways and insufficient parking for commercial trucking vehicles has led to significant safety concerns for truck drivers. Hours of Service (HOS) regulations dictate driving and rest periods of truck drivers. When a truck driver must stop as designated by the HOS regulations and the nearest parking location is at capacity, the trucker must either continue driving past the HOS limit or park in an undesignated and possibly illegal or unsafe spot such as an off-ramp. The combination of these two variables play an important role in the safety of truck drivers on a …

Characterization Of The Response Of Trpv4 To Chemical Stimulation, Jacob V. Schluns

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a source of acute and chronic health issues for many patients. One of the components of the brain’s response to injury is astrogliosis, in which astrocytes that normally function to repair the brain instead form scar tissue that halts repair processes. Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid Type 4 (TRPV4) is a trans-membrane calcium channel involved in astrogliosis. Through Fura-2AM based calcium imaging, the base activity of this channel in mouse astrocyte cells was recorded. The cells were then subjected to TRPV4 agonist and antagonist stimulation and their subsequent activity levels were recorded. The data showed that …

Models For Pedestrian Trajectory Prediction And Navigation In Dynamic Environments, Jeremy N. Kerfs

Master's Theses

Robots are no longer constrained to cages in factories and are increasingly taking on roles alongside humans. Before robots can accomplish their tasks in these dynamic environments, they must be able to navigate while avoiding collisions with pedestrians or other robots. Humans are able to move through crowds by anticipating the movements of other pedestrians and how their actions will influence others; developing a method for predicting pedestrian trajectories is a critical component of a robust robot navigation system. A current state-of-the-art approach for predicting pedestrian trajectories is Social-LSTM, which is a recurrent neural network that incorporates information about neighboring …

Bias And Other Error In Gridded Weather Data Sets And Their Impacts On Estimating Reference Evapotranspiration, Philip A. Blankenau

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Gridded weather data sets are increasingly used in a variety of hydrologic and agricultural applications due to their complete spatial and temporal coverage. One application of gridded data sets is the estimation of evapotranspiration (ET). Several operational remote sensing (RS) approaches for estimating ET, such as the SEBAL, METRIC and EEFlux models, require estimates of reference ET (ETref), where ETref is expected ET from a hypothetical reference crop of clipped grass or alfalfa. Gridded weather data provide for the computation of ETref in all areas of a remote sensing image, and therefore potentially remove the need for dense weather station …

Fast Monostatic Scattering Analysis Based On Bayesian Compressive Sensing, Huan Huan Zhang, Wei E.I. Sha, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang May 2017

Fast Monostatic Scattering Analysis Based On Bayesian Compressive Sensing, Huan Huan Zhang, Wei E.I. Sha, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In conjugation with the method of moments, the Bayesian compressive sensing algorithm is utilized to fast analyze the monostatic electromagnetic scattering problem. Different from the orthogonal matching pursuit based compressive sensing approach that cannot determine the required measurement times, the proposed method overcomes the difficulty by adopting the Bayesian framework to recover the underlying signal. Error bars of the signal can be obtained in the recovery procedure, which offers a way to adaptively determine the number of compressive-sensing measurements.

The final steps in the manufacturing of a superconducting RF cavity involve careful tuning before the final welds to match the target frequency as fabrication tolerances may introduce some frequency deviations. The target frequency is chosen based on analysis of the shifts induced by remaining processing steps including acid etching and cool down. The baseline fabrication of a DQW crab cavity for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) envisages a first tuning before the cavity subassemblies are welded together. To produce a very accurate final result, subassemblies are trimmed to frequency in the last machining steps, using a clamped cavity assembly …
