An Improved Method For Measurement Of Radial Thermal Conductivity Of Cylindrical Bodies, Salwa Shaik
An Improved Method For Measurement Of Radial Thermal Conductivity Of Cylindrical Bodies, Salwa Shaik
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Li-ion cells are ubiquitously found in day to day electronic devices due to their high power density storage capacity. These batteries are known to exhibit sharp reduction in performance at high temperature. Due to this, several attempts have been made in the past to measure thermal properties of the Li-ion cell. This work improves upon past measurements by showing that heat loss during measurements is non-negligible, and by developing an analytical model to account for such heat loss. Experimental measurements carried out on multiple materials demonstrate non-negligible heat loss. When accounted analytically, these data result in thermal conductivity values that …

As the worldwide demand for the data centers grows, so does the size and load placed on data centers which leads to the applied constraints on power and space available to the operator. Cooling power consumption is a major contributor of the total energy consumption of the system. In the process of optimization of cooling energy consumption per performance unit, liquid cooling technology has emerged as one of the most viable solutions. In this rack level study, 2OU (Open U) hybrid cooled web servers are tested for an evaluation of warm water cooling in centralized coolant system. Effects of higher …
Load Carrying Capacity Management Of Compound Anisotropic Composite Rings Under External Pressure, Salman Bakhrayba
Load Carrying Capacity Management Of Compound Anisotropic Composite Rings Under External Pressure, Salman Bakhrayba
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Composites have much higher strength than conventional materials such as steel. This makes it attractive to replace heavy loaded structural elements, made traditionally from steel, by elements made from composites. However, it is not a trivial task for statically indeterminate structures due to anisotropy of elastic and strength properties of composites. Present investigation is done for a ring subjected to external load. Such rings are used as bulkheads in many applications. Dependence of ultimate external pressure on thickness of the ring is nonlinear one. It is related to non-uniformity of distribution of circumferential stresses, with anisotropy of material, with set …

A Comparative Study Of Wooden And Composite Crossarm Of An Electric Utility Pole, Amith Venkatesh
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Currently, most of the crossarms existing in the nation are made of wood. However, wood has a set of negative features like shorter life span due to environmental cracking, damages by insects and birds. Secondly, an insufficient strength and stiffness which is compensated either by increasing the cross-section or by reducing the span between two poles. Also, it’s reduced insulating property in case of high humidity of air which can be accounted to its hygroscopic behavior. Replacement of wooden crossarms by composite crossarms is a known solution to many problems. However, the existing projects are far from optimal. Present investigation …

Thermal Characterization Of An Isolated Hybrid Cooled Server With Pump And Fan Failure Scenarios, Uschas Chowdhury
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Modern day data centers are operated at high power for increased power density, maintenance, and cooling which covers almost 2 percent (70 billion kilowatt-hours) of the total energy consumption in the US. IT components and cooling system occupy the major portion of this energy consumption. Although data centers are designed to perform efficiently, cooling the high-density components is still a challenge. So, alternative methods to improve the cooling efficiency has become the drive to reduce the cooling cost. As liquid cooling is more efficient for high specific heat capacity, density, and thermal conductivity, hybrid cooling can offer the advantage of …

Numerical Study Of Marangoni Convection And Mass Transport In Microdroplets, Viraj Parag Sabane
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Marangoni convection is a flow resulting from a surface tension gradient at air/liquid interface caused by temperature gradient, concentration of surfactant or applied electric field. Marangoni convection when caused by temperature gradient is also known as thermo-capillary effect. A microgravity condition presents an ideal case to study this phenomenon, since interfacial forces are dominant over body forces. Hence Marangoni convection inside the micro-droplet was studied both numerically and experimentally. The potential application at micro-scale includes particle separation, chaotic mixing inside the droplet and possible enhancement in liquid liquid extraction. To explore these application, firstly flow field inside a droplet was …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Arc-heated wind tunnels are the primary test facility for screening and qualification of candidate materials for hypersonic thermal protection systems (TPS). Via an electric arc that largely augments the enthalpy (by tens of MJ/kg) of the working fluid (Air, Nitrogen, CO2 in case of Mars-entry studies) passed through a converging-diverging nozzle at specific stagnation conditions, different regimes encountered in entry and re-entry hypersonic aerothermodynamics can be simulated. Because of the high-enthalpies (and associated temperatures that generally exceed the limits required by the thermo-structural integrity of the facility) the active cooling of the arc-heated wind tunnel’s parts exposed to the working …

Each year many patients die waiting for a transplant organ to become available. Increasing the available number of transplant organs would save lives. The donor pool could be expanded if organs which are considered to be of uncertain viability could be utilized for transplantation. Currently, when there is any doubt about the viability of the organ, it is discarded. This occurs because there has been no way to confirm its viability other than to transplant it and risk the life of the recipient. Thus, many organs that are in fact good are wasted. Some might not be fully viable but …

Response Of Unsaturated Soils Under Monotonic And Dynamic Loading Over Moderate Suction States, Aritra Banerjee
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The understanding of the mechanical behavior of the unsaturated soils has been significantly enhanced due to the recent advancement of technology and modifications to the conventional testing devices. However, the implementation of the concepts of unsaturated soil has lagged, mainly due to the risks associated with the development of civil infrastructure based on practically untested theories and the limited reliable prediction methods for compacted, expansive, residual, and collapsible soils, which requires reliable and comprehensive experimental data. Moreover, the tests on unsaturated soils are enormously time consuming and often exorbitantly expensive, which further hinders the use of unsaturated soil mechanics in …

Resilient Modulus (MR) is one of the most important stiffness parameter to determine the thickness of a pavement layer (AASHTO 2003 pavement design guideline). Recent studies conducted by researchers on the variability of MR with wetting-drying (WD) and freeze-thaw (FT) cycles show that long-term durability is an important criterion to be considered in designing pavement base with recycled materials. At present, the design procedure does not consider the effect of deterioration of pavement layers due to seasonal variations and limited studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of environmental deterioration on the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled crushed …

Methane (CH4) is a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG), contributing 32% of current climate forcing (US EPA, 2015). In 2014 the White House released the “Strategy to Cut Methane Emissions” as part of the Climate Action Plan. Landfills are one of the strategy’s 4 key sectors, contributing 18% of US methane emissions (US EPA, 2013). Even when landfills capture methane and burn it to produce electricity, around 25% of methane still leaks through landfill covers (US EPA, 2005). In natural environments, iron oxides, manganese oxides, nitrates, and sulfates have been shown to stimulate microbial anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) (Sivan et …

Design And Evaluation Of Modified Centerline Rumble Strips, Yong-Rak Kim, Tae Sun You, Laurence Rilett
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
A centerline rumble strip (CLRS) is primarily installed on the centerline of undivided two-lane and two-way roadways to alert drivers that they are moving out of their intended travel lane. The main purpose of CLRSs is to reduce crossover collisions typically caused by inattentive, distracted, drowsy, or fatigued drivers. Despite the safety benefits, CLRSs that were milled over or adjacent to the centerline joint may increase or accelerate the deterioration and degradation of the pavement structure, which has been observed in Nebraska pavements. In this research project, new (or modified) CLRS designs were sought to reduce pavement damage, while satisfying …

Numerical And Analytical Study Of Curvature Effects In Laminar Shock Wave/Boundary Layer Interactions, James Ray Grisham
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Shock wave/boundary-layer interactions (SBLIs) are one of the most complex flow phenomena because of the different types of physics involved (i.e., viscous versus inviscid) and their side effects such as boundary layer separation and extreme localized heating. Control surfaces based on compliant mechanisms are becoming a reality and introduce an additional variable into the already complex SBLI, namely surface curvature. The purpose of the present work is to systematically study the effects of surface curvature on laminar, ramp-induced SBLIs. This is accomplished using numerical and theoretical approaches in the form of numerical solutions to the compressible Navier–Stokes equations and triple-deck …
