Effect Of Agitation On Protein Aggregation In Vials Made From Glass Or Plastics, Birgit Mueller-Chorus, Erica Tullo, Vinod Vilivalam, Lloyd Waxman
Single-use Technologies II: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications
The increasing use of proteins as therapeutics including monoclonal antibodies has focused attention on the need to maintain the stability of these labile molecules during both storage and shipment. The degradation of therapeutic proteins can arise from aggregation and adsorption in primary containers, as well as from exposure to leachables, and chemical damage due to exposure to oxygen or light. Since vials continue to be used as primary containers for multiple-use applications, including vaccines and lyophilized drug products, we have compared the effect of mechanical stress on protein aggregation in vials made of glass versus vials made of the plastic …

Particulate Contamination In Single Use Systems: Measurement Challenges, Klaus Wormuth, Fanny Gaston, Mathieu Labedan
Single-use Technologies II: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications
In conventional biopharmaceutical processes using stainless steel components, the pharmaceutical manufacturer is responsible for process cleanliness. However for single use systems, the pharmaceutical manufacturer “outsources” process cleanliness to the manufacturer of the single use systems, since no rinsing or cleaning occurs prior to implementation. Especially critical applications such as final fill and finish or aseptic processes demand a high degree of cleanliness with respect to particulate contamination. Although single use component assembly occurs in carefully controlled cleanroom environments, risks arise for particulate contamination from incoming components, cutting and welding operations, and human activity during manually intensive assembly processes. While visual …

Single-use Technologies II: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications
A Single-Use assembly or system consists of numerous flexible components connected together via heat seals, overmolds or mechanical fasteners. The integrity (e.g. leak assurance) of such a system is dependent on the internal surface being continuously sealed and free of disconnects between the various components. The diameter of the flexible tubing during manufacture of the assemblies and the tubing expansion at operational pressures are important characteristics to know. Understanding these factors can help in the design of assemblies that maintain their integrity throughout their use at operating conditions. The aim of the study was to characterize four different tubing types …

Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis (Lcsa) Of Polymer-Based Piping For Plumbing Applications, Andy J. Rivas Bolivar
Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis (Lcsa) Of Polymer-Based Piping For Plumbing Applications, Andy J. Rivas Bolivar
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Water conveyance systems play a critical role in modern developed areas. Polymer pipes have been used for about a century, and their convenient physical properties have positioned polymers as the leading material in the piping industry. Having such influence in the market means that changes in current material selection and manufacturing could lead to significant reductions in the footprint associated with their products. Currently, there are no comparative lifecycle assessments that evaluate the different polymer selections commercially available, which makes it hard to determine what products have the least impact on the environment. Understanding how such impacts are relative to …
Process Development And Implementation For The Imaging Of Heat Treated A2 Steel For Consolidation Into An Atlas, Jessica Roberts
Process Development And Implementation For The Imaging Of Heat Treated A2 Steel For Consolidation Into An Atlas, Jessica Roberts
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Material processes, properties, and microstructure are interconnected, often visualized as the points of a triangle. Changing the process a material goes through will in turn change the properties and microstructure of that material. In materials research and education (specifically with metals), comparison between research or experiment results and scholarly-accepted results is important. When reading textbooks addressing different properties of metals and the process of metal treatment, images are often shown of the various microstructures associated with each property or process stage. The difficulty comes in trying to compare the stages or properties to one another; often different materials and processes …

Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty Patents
A composition generally includes carbon particles. The particles are prepared by dissolving a carbohydrate-based precursor in water to form a precursor solution and placing the precursor solution in a pressure vessel. The precursor solution is placed in a pressure vessel. The pressure vessel is heated to a reaction temperature to form carbon particles. The carbon particles are subjected to a chemical activation and a physical activation. The composition includes, by weight, about 5% to about 30% oxygen.

Toward Measuring Network Aesthetics Based On Symmetry, Zengqiang Chen, Matthias Dehmer, Frank Emmert-Streib, Abbe Mowshowitz, Yongtang Shi
Publications and Research
In this exploratory paper, we discuss quantitative graph-theoretical measures of network aesthetics. Related work in this area has typically focused on geometrical features (e.g., line crossings or edge bendiness) of drawings or visual representations of graphs which purportedly affect an observer’s perception. Here we take a very different approach, abandoning reliance on geometrical properties, and apply information-theoretic measures to abstract graphs and networks directly (rather than to their visual representaions) as a means of capturing classical appreciation of structural symmetry. Examples are used solely to motivate the approach to measurement, and to elucidate our symmetry-based mathematical theory of network aesthetics.
Investigating The Classical And Non-Classical Mechanical Properties Of Gan Nanowires, Mohammad Reza Zamani Kouhpanji
Investigating The Classical And Non-Classical Mechanical Properties Of Gan Nanowires, Mohammad Reza Zamani Kouhpanji
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Study and prediction of classical and non-classical mechanical properties of GaN is crucial due to the potential application of GaN nanowires (NWs) in piezoelectric, probe-based nanometrology, and nanolithography areas. GaN is mainly grown on sapphire substrates whose lattice constant and thermal expansion coefficient are significantly different from GaN. These discrepancies cause mechanical defects and high residual stresses and strains in GaN, which reduce its quantum efficiency.
Specifically, for nanoscale applications, the mechanical properties of materials differ significantly compared to the bulk properties due to size-effects. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the mechanical properties of GaN NWs using the non-classical …
An Experimental Study On Drag Reduction Of Aftermarket Additions On An Suv, Christiana L. Katsoulos
An Experimental Study On Drag Reduction Of Aftermarket Additions On An Suv, Christiana L. Katsoulos
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Over recent years, the awareness of climate change has become more prevalent worldwide and one major contributor to global warming has been the use of transportation. Vehicles contribute to global warming by releasing petroleum based emissions such as significant amounts of carbon dioxide and numerous other harmful environmental pollutants. SUVs contribute to the emissions problem more so than sedans, since they have lower gas mileage and need more gasoline regularly. The main functionality of sport utility vehicles, or SUVs, includes hauling or off-roading and fuel efficiency is not always the focus in the design process. However, aerodynamic enhancements could improve …

Technology From The Perspective Of Society And Public Interest, Chanwoon Park
Purdue Polytechnic Doctoral Dissertations
The ultimate goals of this study were to determine ways to reconcile technology with public interest and to understand the relationship between what we know and how we feel about technology. To achieve the goals, related literatures were reviewed; the mechanism of technology development was described with empirical data; and human perception of technology was tested with a survey. The duality of technology that implied technological inherencies of technical reason and social meanings was the principle assumption of the study. Neutrality of technology becomes a myth with the presence of social meanings embodied in technology. Given the huge impact of …

Study Of Knowledge-Based System (Kbs) And Decision Making Methodologies In Materials Selection For Lightweight Aircraft Metallic Structures, Pashupati R. Adhikari, Reza Mirshams
Journal of Applied Science & Engineering Technology
This paper presents an overview of knowledge-based system (KBS) in the context of decision making methodologies used in materials selection for the design of light weight aircraft metallic structures. Overall aircraft weight reduction means substantially less fuel consumption and better efficiency. Part of the solution to this problem is to find a way to reduce overall weight of metallic structures in the aircraft. Two distinct multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) methodologies are presented with examples featuring a set of short-listed materials suitable in the design of the structures. Pre-defined constraint values, mainly mechanical properties, are employed as relevant attributes satisfying …

A Novel Technique For Designing High Power Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (Soa)-Based Tunable Fiber Compound-Ring Lasers Using Low Power Optical Components, Muhammad A. Ummy, Simeon Bikorimana, Roger Dorsinville
Publications and Research
A simple, stable and inexpensive dual-output port widely tunable semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based fiber compound-ring laser structure is demonstrated. This unique nested ring cavity enables high optical power to split into different branches where amplification and wavelength selection are achieved by using low-power SOAs and a tunable filter. Furthermore, two Sagnac loop mirrors, which are spliced at the two ends of the compound-ring cavity not only serve as variable reflectors but also channel the optical energy back to the same port without using any high optical power combiner. We propose and discuss how the demonstrated fiber compound-ring laser structure can …

Interactions Of A Co-Rotating Vortex Pair At Multiple Offsets, Kyle Forster, Tracie Barber, Sammy Diasinos, Graham Doig
Aerospace Engineering
Two NACA0012 vanes at various lateral offsets were investigated by wind tunnel testing to observe the interactions between the streamwise vortices. The vanes were separated by nine chord lengths in the streamwise direction to allow the upstream vortex to impact on the downstream geometry. These vanes were evaluated at an angle of incidence of 8° and a Reynolds number of 7 x 104 using particle image velocimetry. A helical motion of the vortices was observed, with rotational rate increasing as the offset was reduced to the point of vortex merging. Downstream meandering of the weaker vortex was found to …

The reliability of concrete infrastructure is vital to ensuring daily life, as well as commerce, can progress without interruption. From the pavement of interstate highways to the driveways and sidewalks in a local neighborhood, concrete is expensive to install and often even more expensive, and intrusive, when it needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, to maintain functionality in winter climates concrete is heavily exposed to deicing salts. This not only affects the roads, driveways, and sidewalks where salt is applied directly, but many other areas such as parking and residential garages where vehicles (and people) will track salt along with water …

The vast majority of construction scheduling software uses a combination of spreadsheets and Gantt charts for developing and depicting Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules. While this paradigm works for the expert scheduler, it is not conducive to collaboration, and it is prohibitively difficult for non-scheduling experts to understand.
NetPoint® provides a dynamic, visual interface conducive to touch and gestural input. Activities are drawn directly on a time-scale and may be placed on the same row or arranged automatically using codes or the WBS. Such control of the presentation makes it easier to communicate the plan to any type of audience. …

Tum: Towards Ubiquitous Multi-Device Localization For Cross-Device Interaction, Han Xu, Zheng Yang, Zimu Zhou, Ke Yi, Chunyi Peng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cross-device interaction is becoming an increasingly hot topic as we often have multiple devices at our immediate disposal in this era of mobile computing. Various cross-device applications such as file sharing, multi-screen display, and crossdevice authentication have been proposed and investigated. However, one of the most fundamental enablers remains unsolved: How to achieve ubiquitous multi-device localization? Though pioneer efforts have resorted to gesture-assisted or sensing-assisted localization, they either require extensive user participation or impose some strong assumptions on device sensing abilities. This introduces extra costs and constraints, and thus degrades their practicality. To overcome these limitations, we propose TUM, an …

Using Phase For Radar Scatterer Classification, Linda J. Moore, Brian D. Rigling, Robert Penno, Edmund G. Zelnio
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Traditional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems tend to discard phase information of formed complex radar imagery prior to automatic target recognition (ATR). This practice has historically been driven by available hardware storage, processing capabilities, and data link capacity. Recent advances in high performance computing (HPC) have enabled extremely dense storage and processing solutions. Therefore, previous motives for discarding radar phase information in ATR applications have been mitigated. First, we characterize the value of phase in one-dimensional (1-D) radar range profiles with respect to the ability to correctly estimate target features, which are currently employed in ATR algorithms for target discrimination. …

Length Of Need And Minimum System Length For F-Shape Portable Concrete Barrier, Robert W. Bielenberg, Dylan T. Meyer, Ronald K. Faller, John D. Reid
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
Portable concrete barrier (PCB) systems are often used to redirect errant vehicles through a combination of inertial resistance, lateral friction loads, and tensile loads developed from the mass and friction of the barrier segments. State departments of transportation (DOTs) and other end users may wish to utilize minimal length PCB installations to shield a hazard or work zone or limit the number of barriers required on the upstream and downstream ends to reduce overall system length. However, concerns with the performance of shorter PCB installations include increased lateral deflections and working widths and barrier pocketing. Additionally, no impact testing has …

Data-driven research is becoming increasingly important on university and college campuses. Most US federal and many international granting agencies mandatorily require that researchers applying for public grants possess a data management plan and make their research and data publically available through online access. This presentation overviews online research data repositories and implementation strategies for university and college campus libraries. The presentation pragmatically surveys this newer technology landscape and how organizations can begin to think about and implement an online data research repository. This session will survey the landscape but also makes use of practical example from Texas State University and …
