Ccus As A Regional Economic Development Tool: Planning And Design Considerations, Kevin O’Brien May 2017

Ccus As A Regional Economic Development Tool: Planning And Design Considerations, Kevin O’Brien

CO2 Summit III: Pathways to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Deployment

One of the major concerns has been the impact of Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration on regional economies. We submit that CCUS provides a means for regional economic growth and job creation. In order to achieve these benefits, it is necessary to re-build and re-design the structure of the regional carbon supply chain. This includes (1) developing a methodology to evaluate large scale capture options for regional power plants, (2) evaluating a portfolio of options to utilize the captured CO2 that are relevant to the needs of the local economy, (3) establishing public-private partnerships that help incentivize the newly formed …

Co2 Capture From Industrial Sources By High-Temperature Sorbents, Matteo C. Romano, Giampaolo Manzolini, Stefano Consonni May 2017

Co2 Capture From Industrial Sources By High-Temperature Sorbents, Matteo C. Romano, Giampaolo Manzolini, Stefano Consonni

CO2 Summit III: Pathways to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Deployment

Among the emerging CO2 capture technologies, systems based on high temperature (HT) regenerable sorbents had a significant development in recent years. In addition to power plants, HT sorbents technologies can be particularly promising for CO2 capture in carbon intensive industrial processes such as cement plants, steel mills and hydrogen plants. Calcium looping (CaL) is a combined post-combustion and oxyfuel combustion technology which uses calcium oxide (CaO) as CO2 sorbent. In this process, CO2 in combustion flue gases is absorbed in a carbonator reactor by forming calcium carbonate (CaCO3) through the exothermic carbonation reaction. Carbonated sorbent is then regenerated to CaO …

Are Solar Panels A Viable Power Source For A Green Energy Vehicle?, Mason C. Adams May 2017

Are Solar Panels A Viable Power Source For A Green Energy Vehicle?, Mason C. Adams

Senior Theses

A solar cell powered go-kart has been built and tested. The result shows using solar energy alone cannot meet the requirement of running a regular passenger car. This is due to the limited surface area of the passenger car. This thesis also discusses the operating principles of solar panels, the physics of P type and N type semiconductors, and the formation of the PN junction, as well as the solar current. Modifications of an existing go-kart are described in detail in this thesis. Suggestions for making green vehicles are discussed as well.

Ben Regoso, Benjamin Regoso May 2017

Ben Regoso, Benjamin Regoso

Spring 2017

One of the first people I met when I first arrived on campus in the summer of 2010 was the IT Support “guy.” Based on past experience with IT in other places, my expectations were low. I figured I would pass him my tech gear and he would work everything out. A quick, simple transaction is all that was needed. Ben Regoso’s work ethic reset my expectations and, more importantly, began to shape my own perspective on how to work with others even when the task is “just” transactional.

Ben’s attitude and posture in every “transaction” I’ve had with him …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Abstract: Hybrid switches configured by paralleling Silicon (Si) Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFET) have been verified to be a high-efficiency cost-effective device concept. In this paper, a current-dependent switching strategy is introduced and implemented to further improve the performance of Si/SiC hybrid switches. This proposed switching strategy is based on a comprehensive consideration of reducing device losses, reliable operation, and overload capability. Based on the utilization of such Si/SiC hybrid switches and the proposed switching strategy, a 15-kW single-phase H-bridge inverter prototype was implemented and tested in the laboratory. Simulation and …

Utilization Of Remote Sensing In Drought Monitoring Over Iraq, Yousif Almamalachy May 2017

Utilization Of Remote Sensing In Drought Monitoring Over Iraq, Yousif Almamalachy

Dissertations and Theses

Agricultural drought is a creeping disaster that overshadows the vegetative cover in general and cropland specifically in Iraq, a country that was well known for its agricultural production and fertile soil. In the recent years, the arable lands in Iraq experienced increasing land degradation that led to desertification, economic losses, food insecurity, and deteriorating environment. Remote sensing is employed in this study and four different indices are utilized, each of which is derived from MODIS satellite mission products. Agricultural drought maps are produced from 2003 to 2015 after masking the vegetation cover. Year 2008 was found the most severe drought …

Observing Orbital Angular Momentum Transfer From Electron Vortex Beams To Matter, Hannah Devyldere May 2017

Observing Orbital Angular Momentum Transfer From Electron Vortex Beams To Matter, Hannah Devyldere

Senior Theses

It is possible to produce electron beams with non-zero orbital angular momentum. Such beams, known as electron vortex beams, are theoretically able to transfer their orbital angular momenta to matter, causing the matter to rotate. Nanoparticles in an aqueous solution were observed with an electron vortex beam to detect the transfer of orbital angular momentum in a low-friction environment. Observing the transfer of orbital angular momentum to particles in solution is difficult due to the necessity of imaging the particles through a liquid and the random movement of particles in the solution. Thus, orbital angular momentum transfer to matter could …

Adsorption Processes For Co2 Capture: An Overview, Paul Webley, Ranjeet Singh, Penny Xiao

CO2 Summit III: Pathways to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Deployment

Adsorption processes for CO2 capture have gained significant attention in the last decade with hundreds of reports on new adsorbents and processes for capture and removal of carbon dioxide from a range of gas streams. To date, the only commercial examples are removal of trace carbon dioxide in gas streams such as LNG and ASU upstream molecular sieve units. There are no commercial examples of the use of adsorbents to capture carbon dioxide by adsorption processes and deliver a stream of high purity carbon dioxide for sequestration or further processing. In this study, we present the range of processing options …

Development Of Geospatial And Temporal Characteristics For Hispaniola’S Lake Azuei And Enriquillo Using Landsat Imagery, Mahrokh Moknatian, Michael Piasecki, Jorge Gonzalez

Publications and Research

In this paper, we used Landsat imagery for water body identification to create a novel 36-year surface area extent time series for lakes Azuei (Haiti) and Enriquillo (Dominican Republic) aimed at illuminating the dramatic temporal changes of these two lakes not just at yearly but at monthly or even sub-monthly scales. We used the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) to extract water features and we also used spatial differentiation and thresholding techniques to remove clouds and associated shadows from the scene that were then passed through gap filling algorithms to complete and extract the lake extent polygons. We also explored …

Exploiting On-Chip Voltage Regulators As A Countermeasure Against Power Analysis Attacks, Weize Yu May 2017

Exploiting On-Chip Voltage Regulators As A Countermeasure Against Power Analysis Attacks, Weize Yu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Non-invasive side-channel attacks (SCA) are powerful attacks which can be used to obtain the secret key in a cryptographic circuit in feasible time without the need for expensive measurement equipment. Power analysis attacks (PAA) are a type of SCA that exploit the correlation between the leaked power consumption information and processed/stored data. Differential power analysis (DPA) and leakage power analysis (LPA) attacks are two types of PAA that exploit different characteristics of the side-channel leakage profile. DPA attacks exploit the correlation between the input data and dynamic power consumption of cryptographic circuits. Alternatively, LPA attacks utilize the correlation between the …

Investigation Into Effects Of Instability And Reactivity Of Hydride-Passivated Silicon Nanoparticles On Interband Photoluminescence, Christine Marie Radlinger May 2017

Investigation Into Effects Of Instability And Reactivity Of Hydride-Passivated Silicon Nanoparticles On Interband Photoluminescence, Christine Marie Radlinger

Dissertations and Theses

While silicon has long been utilized for its electronic properties, its use as an optical material has largely been limited due to the poor efficiency of interband transitions. However, discovery of visible photoluminescence (PL) from nanocrystalline silicon in 1990 triggered many ensuing research efforts to optimize PL from nanocrystalline silicon for optical applications. Currently, use of photoluminescent silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) is commercially limited by: 1) the instability of the energy and intensity of the PL, and 2) the low quantum yield of interband PL from Si NPs.

Herein, red-emitting, hydrogen-passivated silicon nanoparticles (H-Si NPs) were synthesized by thermally-induced disproportionation …

Re-Epithelialization Of Whole Porcine Kidney Scaffold, Evan M. Buckmiller, Alonzo D. Cook

Journal of Undergraduate Research

An estimated 20 million adults (approximately 10% of all individuals over the age of 18) in the United States suffer from some level of chronic kidney disease (CKD), making CKD the 9th leading cause of death in the United States (1). The only successful treatment for end-stage renal failure is transplantation from a donor with similar blood antigen makeup, while living the remainder of their lives receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Unfortunately, individuals awaiting a kidney transplant outnumber viable donations. Scientists have been tasked with discovering and developing methods to answer this growing need. One promising method is the decellularization of porcine …

Continuous Ethanol Production From Synthesis Gas By Clostridium Ragsdalei In A Trickle-Bed Reactor, Mamatha Devarapalli, Randy S. Lewis, Hasan K. Atiyeh May 2017

Continuous Ethanol Production From Synthesis Gas By Clostridium Ragsdalei In A Trickle-Bed Reactor, Mamatha Devarapalli, Randy S. Lewis, Hasan K. Atiyeh

Faculty Publications

A trickle-bed reactor (TBR) when operated in a trickle flow regime reduces liquid resistance to mass transfer because a very thin liquid film is in contact with the gas phase and results in improved gas–liquid mass transfer compared to continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs). In the present study, continuous syngas fermentation was performed in a 1-L TBR for ethanol production by Clostridium ragsdalei. The effects of dilution and gas flow rates on product formation, productivity, gas uptakes and conversion efficiencies were examined. Results showed that CO and H2 conversion efficiencies reached over 90% when the gas flow rate was maintained …
