We, group G, want to address the needs of the restaurant industry by facilitating it with the products, alcoholic beverages, that often brings in the most income in a night for the business and for its bartenders. Mixing drinks takes specialized attention, energy, and time and can be a stressful task for bartenders to perform when a restaurant is packed with customers. Waits become longer and drink orders back up until the restaurant empties again. Our group strives to create a product that will ensure each customer is served with fast and efficient service, while still providing the special attention …

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
Each year the AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) hosts a design competition where college teams design and fly a small, remote-controlled, battery-powered airplane. For this competition, scoring primarily depends upon the following: maximizing payload, maximizing speed, minimizing weight, minimizing wingspan. Since wingspan is a key scoring factor and variable wing geometry is allowed, our design team has decided to design a pivoting wing system that can be remotely activated immediately before and after takeoff and landing respectively.

Bars are a great setting for friends to meet and drink however there aren’t many special features that set one bar apart from the rest. What you won’t find in any bar today is robotic bartender able to make any drink to order. In addition, there are many ways to make certain drinks, allowing for much variation. Automating the cocktail making process eliminates the variation in alcohol levels and in ingredients used. In addition, it guarantees that a customer’s drink will not have anything in it that the customer does not explicitly see. Giving the customer options of existing drinks …

Habitat Use Of Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus Limbatus) At Fishing Piers, Kelsey L. Spencer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) can be observed near fishing piers throughout the summer along the northeast coast of South Carolina. These piers attract and support a wide variety of potential prey and sharks are able to forage on fishers’ discards with minimal energetic cost. I tagged 12 blacktip sharks with acoustic transmitters, monitored piers with acoustic receivers, and conducted pier-creel surveys to determine the habitat use of blacktip sharks at fishing piers, factors that influenced residence time and presence/absence at piers, and any cyclical patterns in visits to piers. Data were analyzed with pier association indices (PAI), mixed models, and …

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited red cell disorder that leads to sickling of red blood cells, anemia and vaso-occlusion. The most common reason for hospitalization and morbidity in children is pain due to vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC). Importantly, poor sleep quality can lead to increased pain the subsequent day and nocturnal pain leads to reduced deep sleep, both which can then modify pain sensitivity. Studies using sleep diaries have shown this cyclical relationship between sleep and pain. Frequent occurrences of restless sleep are therefore believed to contribute to an increased severity and intensity of pain episodes. There is very …

Torsional Stiffness Measuring Device, Cheyne Shiroma, Clayton Over, Nadab Wubshet
Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
This device will measure the torsional stiffness of a FSAE race car frame. Our design will apply a torsional load to the frame while simultaneously providing precise measurements required to calculate the applied load, displacement, angular deflection, and torsional stiffness. Unlike the most popular method of testing torsional stiffness by applying load with a lever, our device twists the frame using hydraulic bottle jacks with an integrated pressure gauge. This aspect enables precise control of the twist, and the pressure gauges provide the capability of load-measurement. The validity of measurements will be assessed by comparing results to theoretical calculations.

Tissue Stretching Device, Usama Ismail, Humza Ismail, Elvir Sarajlic
Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
This tissue loading project consists of designing an apparatus that has two main functions. The first, and most obvious of these, being creating a device that will deform a band or disk of tissue with cells pre-seeded on them uniaxially while recording the stress and strain, specifically strain rate, that is applied to the tissue. While the deformation aspect of this device will be key, an equally important part of this project will be designing a part of our tissue loader that mimics the environmental chamber that the lab already uses or is compatible with the environmental chamber that is …
Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index And Scaling In Multiphase Random Polycrystals, Muhammad Ridwan Murshed
Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index And Scaling In Multiphase Random Polycrystals, Muhammad Ridwan Murshed
Theses and Dissertations
Under consideration is the finite-size scaling of elastic properties in single and two-phase random polycrystals with individual grains belonging to any crystal class (from cubic to triclinic). These polycrystals are generated by Voronoi tessellations with varying grain sizes and volume fractions. By employing variational principles in elasticity, we introduce the notion of a 'Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index' and investigate its role in the scaling of elastic properties at finite mesoscales. The index turns out to be a function of 43 variables, 21 independent components for each phase and the volume fraction of either phase. Furthermore, the relationship between Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index …

Previously, Calvin College had a cogeneration system with the purpose of generating electricity and heat, through the combustion of natural gas, for Calvin’s campus. The original co-gen system was removed in 2017 due to high costs associated with maintenance and operations. Without a co-gen system, Calvin College is fully dependent on the grid. To save money and help in the President’s Carbon Commitment, PCC, the mechanical engineering students of ENGR 333 (section B) propose the implementation of a new co-gen system.

Calvin College uses 161,000 MMBTU of natural gas per year, which correlates to $836,000 of annual expenses. However Calvin could save as much as $240,000 on natural gas if they were as efficient as the top performer in an energy audit of similar colleges and universities in the Midwest, conducted by Sightlines Institute. The goal of this project was to see what actions could be taken to save the college $75,000 in annual natural gas costs.
Optimal Transfer Point Locations In Two-Stage Distribution Systems, Jeffrey A. Mcdougall, Luis Daniel Otero
Optimal Transfer Point Locations In Two-Stage Distribution Systems, Jeffrey A. Mcdougall, Luis Daniel Otero
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Limited range of emerging delivery vehicles, speci cally unmanned aerial systems, creates gaps in last mile retail distribution networks and excludes signi cant numbers of potential customers. Implementing a two-stage distribution process is one approach that eliminates this de cit. However, dispatchers must load the vehicles hauling orders in the initial stage of the process and assign orders for delivery to transfer points in a way that ensures timely arrival while utilizing only the minimum required resources. This paper investigates the capacitated transfer point covering problem which has, until now, been unstudied. The research proposes a mathematical programming model to …

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
A novel crosslinker [4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl diacrylate (44BDA)] was developed, and a series of temperature-responsive hydrogels were synthesized through free radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) with 44BDA. The temperature-responsive behavior of the resulting gels was characterized by swelling studies, and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the hydrogels was characterized through differential scanning calorimetry. Increased content of 44BDA led to a decreased swelling ratio and shifted the LCST to lower temperatures. These novel hydrogels also displayed resiliency through multiple swelling–deswelling cycles, and their temperature responsiveness was reversible. The successful synthesis of NIPAAm-based hydrogels crosslinked with 44BDA has led to a …

Multi-Hazard Performance Assessment Of High-Rise Buildings, Jad El Khoury Antoun
LSU Master's Theses
In the last few decades, there has been an important increase in building high-rise constructions in many cities around the world. Since they offer several benefits in populous areas in terms of space efficiency, economy and sustainability, tower buildings attracted practitioners and researchers to understand better their exclusive behavior and response to natural hazards (e.g., hurricanes, earthquakes). Because of their flexibility and their commonly limited damping, skyscrapers are more susceptible to wind and earthquake actions than low- and mid-rise buildings. Moreover, many locations are prone to multiple hazards; hence, it is important to understand thoroughly the structural behavior of structures …
