Breadcrumbs: Privacy as a Privilege Abstract

By: Prachi Bhardwaj

In 2017, the world saw more data breaches than in any year prior. The count was more than the all-time high record in 2016, which was 40 percent more than the year before that.

That’s because consumer data is incredibly valuable today. In the last three decades, data storage has gone from being stored physically to being stored almost entirely digitally, which means consumer data is more accessible and applicable to business strategies. As a result, companies are gathering data in ways previously unknown to the average consumer, and hackers are …

Modified Pid Controller Design For Active Transverse Anti-Rolling System For Ships With Low Roll Motion, Hsing-Cheng Yu, Jhih-Jyun You

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Multi-domain physical modeling software with an intuitive simulation methodology using MapleSim was adopted in this study to create a rigid body structure model of an active transverse anti-rolling system (ATARS) of a container ship. At the same time, a ship stability analysis was also conducted to determine the force model, dynamic equilibrium, and motion behavior of the ATARS of the container ship. Once various external transverse force generated by waves impact varied roll angles of the ATARS on the vessel, a modified proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller designed to improve the capability of the active stabilizer fins used in the ATARS is …

Experimental Assessment Of Suspended Sediment Concentration Changed By Solitary Wave, Jae-Nam Cho, Chang-Geun Song, Kyu-Nam Hwang, Seung-Oh Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A large scale solitary wave causes a lot of sediment transportation and coastal beach erosion, for example tsunami is the one type of solitary waves. During passing such solitary wave over coastal region, higher energy on sediment transportation near bottom would bring to massive geomorphological changes and even worse damages in life and economics. The major objective of this study is to analyze the incipient motion of sediment suspended from bottom by a solitary wave through hydraulic experiments and numerical simulations. First, to estimate the process of sediment transport the experimental study was carried out in the prismatic rectangular channel …

The Nonlinear Dynamics And Anti-Sway Tracking Control For Offshore Container Crane On A Mobile Harbor, You-Gang Sun, Hai-Yan Qiang, Junqi Xu, Da-Shan Dong

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The offshore container crane (OCC), as a novel maritime container transfer system, can handle container from a large container-ship anchored in open sea to address the congestion and limited water-depth of port. However, for the wave- and wind-induced movements of the ship, the crane's control system should be redesigned to ensure the load transfer on the sea. In this paper, we derive the nonlinear dynamic equations of OCC system subjected to the ship motions based on dynamic analysis. Then a double-layer sliding manifold is constructed to realize the position tracking and sway control simultaneously, irrespective of ship motions and parameters …

Energy Efficient Trajectory Design For The Underwater Vehicle With Bounded Inputs Using The Global Optimal Sliding-Mode Control, Mai The Vu, Hyeung-Sik Choi, Jin-Il Kang, Dae-Hyung Ji, Hyun Joong

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, we propose a novel global sliding mode controller (SMC) for an uncertain linear time-varying second order system. The proposed controller was implemented on the underwater vehicle (UV) with uncertainty of bounded parameters and disturbances within limited control input. By applying the proposed controller to the second-order UV system, the arrival time at the reference position and the maximum allowable acceleration are expressed in a closed-form equation if ranges of parametric uncertainties and reference inputs are specified. The closed-form equation can be utilized in designing the capacity of vehicle systems with the condition of the minimum arrival time …

Cost Of Salvage?€“ A Comparative Form Approach, Chung-Sheng Chiu, Chung-Ping Liu, Ki-Yin Chang, Wen-Jui Tseng, Yung-Wei Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The most important principle of salvage is the "No Cure-No Pay" basis, if there is no recovery, there is no payment, whatever the expense of the operation. However, this principle has changed in recent years to reflect the public interest in prevention of damage to the environment (Mudric, 2010). The salvor can now contract in such a way that he is shielded from loss when responding to high risk or low value casualties (so called as "No Cure-Some pay"). Salvage is a high-profit business and high-risk as well in the world. The case of the Costa Concordia - by no …

In offshore oil and gas engineering, pipeline abandonment is unavoidable and its mechanical analysis is necessary and important. For this problem, a numerical model is developed in this study to evaluate pipeline abandonment for the J-laying method. The whole system considered in this model is divided into two parts: the A&R cable and the pipeline in the water. A catenary model was proposed for the former, and the latter is solved by a numerical iterative method. In addition to the boundary conditions at the two end points, a special set of boundary conditions is required at the junction that connects …

Experimental Study Of Dynamic Stability Of Underwater Vehicle-Manipulator System Using Zero Moment Point, Jin-Il Kang, Hyeung-Sik Choi, Mai The Vu, Nguyen Ngoc Duc, Dae-Hyeong Ji, Joon-Young Kim

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

For manipulative underwater operations, an underwater vehiclemanipulator system (UVMS) has more degrees of freedom than those required to conduct a given mission. To follow the desired end-effector position and velocity accurately, UVMS should be able to generate trajectories of manipulators and the underwater vehicle can maintain dynamic stability of the entire system. In this paper, redundancy resolution is performed to find a solution satisfying the given task among many joint-space solutions. Also, to improve the dynamic stability of the UVMS, zero moment point (ZMP) is adopted such that it requires some constraints. For application of UVMS, a joint limitation is …

A Simplified Analytical Method For Estimating Flow-Induced Vibration Responses Of Hydraulic Structures Caused By Flow Fluctuation, Ya-Chao Wu, Lu Lu, Qin-Man Fan, Yun Dong, Chun-Yuan Zuo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In many hydraulic engineering investigations of flow-induced vibration responses, a model test is necessary but yet expensive. In this article, an equilibrium equation between the operation of fluctuating pressure and the work done by damping is established to provide a simplified analytical method for estimating the flow-induced vibration responses of hydraulic structures caused by water flow fluctuations. This approach is based on the Westergaard solution. The flow-induced vibration of water flowing around a dividing wall, the flood discharge vibration of the Liuxihe arch dam, and the flow-induced vibration of the Ertan hyperbolic arch dam are presented to explain the detailed …

Bio-Inspired Multi-Spectral And Polarization Imaging Sensors For Image-Guided Surgery, Nimrod Missael Garcia Dec 2017

Bio-Inspired Multi-Spectral And Polarization Imaging Sensors For Image-Guided Surgery, Nimrod Missael Garcia

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Image-guided surgery (IGS) can enhance cancer treatment by decreasing, and ideally eliminating, positive tumor margins and iatrogenic damage to healthy tissue. Current state-of-the-art near-infrared fluorescence imaging systems are bulky, costly, lack sensitivity under surgical illumination, and lack co-registration accuracy between multimodal images. As a result, an overwhelming majority of physicians still rely on their unaided eyes and palpation as the primary sensing modalities to distinguish cancerous from healthy tissue. In my thesis, I have addressed these challenges in IGC by mimicking the visual systems of several animals to construct low power, compact and highly sensitive multi-spectral and color-polarization sensors. I …

Comparison Of The Bi-Directional Performance Of Micro-Channel Sieve And Thin-Film Time Peripheral Nerve Interfaces, Robert Coker Dec 2017

Comparison Of The Bi-Directional Performance Of Micro-Channel Sieve And Thin-Film Time Peripheral Nerve Interfaces, Robert Coker

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Sophisticated motorized prosthetic limbs contain multiple degrees of freedom of motion as well as embedded pressure and angle transducers to provide sensory feedback in amputees. Although several central neural recording and stimulation modalities exist for both controlling these motions and providing sensory feedback from a prosthetic limb, directly interfacing the peripheral nerves which originally innervated the limb has many advantages. A difficulty with this bi-directional approach is that electrically stimulating axons to provide haptic feedback creates stimulation artifacts at neighboring recording sites within the nerve that are several orders of magnitude larger than the electroneurogram used for control. In this …

Development Of In Vitro Drug Screening Platforms Using Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiovascular Cells, Yosuke Kurokawa

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Drug-induced cardiotoxicity is a critical challenge in the development of new drugs. Since the advent of human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs), researchers have explored ways to utilize these cells for in vitro preclinical drug screening applications. One area of interest is microphysiological systems (i.e. organ-on-a-chip), which aims to create more complex in vitro models of human organ systems, thus improving drug response predictions. In this dissertation, we investigated novel analysis methods and model platforms for detecting drug-induced cardiotoxicity using human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cardiovascular cells.

First, we utilized human iPSC-derived CMs (iPS-CMs) to establish optical methods of …

Identification Of Prognostic Cancer Biomarkers Through The Application Of Rna-Seq Technologies And Bioinformatics, Nathan Wong

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short single-stranded RNAs that function as the guide sequence of the post-transcriptional regulatory process known as the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which targets mRNA sequences for degradation through complementary binding to the guide miRNA. Changes in miRNA expression have been reported as correlated with numerous biological processes, including embryonic development, cellular differentiation, and disease manifestation. In the latter case, dysregulation has been observed in response to infection by human papillomavirus (HPV), which has also been established as both oncogenic in cervical cancers and oropharyngeal cancers and favorable for overall patient survival after tumor formation. The identification of …

Binding Affinity And Specificity Of Sh2 Domain Interactions In Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Signaling Networks, Tom Ronan

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) signaling mechanisms play a central role in intracellular signaling and control development of multicellular organisms, cell growth, cell migration, and programmed cell death. Dysregulation of these signaling mechanisms results in defects of development and diseases such as cancer. Control of this network relies on the specificity and selectivity of Src Homology 2 (SH2) domain interactions with phosphorylated target peptides. In this work, we review and identify the limitations of current quantitative understanding of SH2 domain interactions, and identify severe limitations in accuracy and availability of SH2 domain interaction data. We propose a framework to address some …

The first case is the Beta-Gamma image reconstruction. Positron emitting isotopes, such as 11C, 13N, and 18F, can be used to label molecules, and tracers, such …

Extrinsic And Intrinsic Control Of Integrative Processes In Neural Systems, Anirban Nandi Dec 2017

Extrinsic And Intrinsic Control Of Integrative Processes In Neural Systems, Anirban Nandi

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

At the simplest dynamical level, neurons can be understood as integrators. That is, neurons accumulate excitation from afferent neurons until, eventually, a threshold is reached and they produce a spike. Here, we consider the control of integrative processes in neural circuits in two contexts. First, we consider the problem of extrinsic neurocontrol, or modulating the spiking activity of neural circuits using stimulation, as is desired in a wide range of neural engineering applications. From a control-theoretic standpoint, such a problem presents several interesting nuances, including discontinuity in the dynamics due to the spiking process, and the technological limitations associated with …

Coupling Of Oxidation-Reduction Reactions Of Chromium, Iron And Manganese: Implications For The Fate And Mobility Of Chromium In Aquatic Environments, Chao Pan

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Both within the United States and internationally, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a contaminant of concern in drinking water supplies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering a Cr(VI)-specific standard. Thus improved technologies for Cr(VI) removal in drinking water are needed. Iron electrocoagulation for Cr(VI) removal was examined at conditions directly relevant to drinking water treatment, and humic acid (HA) affects the performance of electrocoagulation in multiple ways. The success of the chromium treatment or remediation also relies on the stability of the Cr(III)-containing solids with respect to reoxidation under groundwater conditions. Manganese is ubiquitous in aquatic and terrestrial environments, and …
