The Design, Development, And Evaluation Of A Usable And Privacy-Enhanced Telepresence Interface For Older Adults, Xian Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Maintaining health and wellness while aging-in-place independently is crucial for older adults. Telepresence technology can be potentially beneficial for this target population to stay socially connected. However, this technology is not specifically designed for older adults. For this target population to adopt such technology successfully, it is important to ensure that they do not experience usability barriers. This research uses HCI/HRI concepts and technology design principles for older adults to design, develop and test telepresence user interfaces (UI). This addresses the following research questions: 1): What are the essential usability and privacy-enhanced features needed to inform the design and development …

Selective Deposition Of Platinum By Strong Electrostatic Adsorption Onto Cobalt- And Iron-Based Catalysts For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, Fahad A. Almalki Jan 2018

Selective Deposition Of Platinum By Strong Electrostatic Adsorption Onto Cobalt- And Iron-Based Catalysts For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, Fahad A. Almalki

Theses and Dissertations

Cobalt and iron based catalysts are commercially predominant for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, Co-based catalysts for their stability, activity, and inactivity for the water gas shift reaction and Fe-based catalysts for their cheap cost, high light-olefins and alcohols selectivity, and tolerance to H2/CO ratio. These catalysts are structure sensitive with lower activity at nanoparticle sizes smaller than 6-8 nm. Co-based catalysts exhibit high activity, low CH4 selectivity, and high C5+ selectivity, while Fe-based catalysts are more selective to low-molecular-weight hydrocarbons such as olefins and alcohols. The reducibility of cobalt and iron is another important factor which may be key for improving their …

Assessing Exposure To Occupants In An Indoor Space Due To Expirated Aerosols: Application Of Computational Fluid Dynamics, Firoza Binte Omar

Theses and Dissertations

Indoor environment is an important issue for the well-being of the society. In the United States more than 90% people spend their time indoor, indoor air pollution is more culpable than the pollution outside air. Two third of US businesses lose more than $100,000 per year due to workplace related illness. The trend of sharing the work space has an impact on total sick leaves in a company. Infectious particles released by a flu sufferer’s sneezing, coughing or even laughing can be a vital source. A thorough analysis on infectious particles’ transmission and air flow of the space can provide …

Authenticating Users With 3d Passwords Captured By Motion Sensors, Jing Tian Jan 2018

Authenticating Users With 3d Passwords Captured By Motion Sensors, Jing Tian

Theses and Dissertations

Authentication plays a key role in securing various resources including corporate facilities or electronic assets. As the most used authentication scheme, knowledgebased authentication is easy to use but its security is bounded by how much a user can remember. Biometrics-based authentication requires no memorization but ‘resetting’ a biometric password may not always be possible. Thus, we propose study several behavioral biometrics (i.e., mid-air gestures) for authentication which does not have the same privacy or availability concerns as of physiological biometrics.

In this dissertation, we first propose a user-friendly authentication system Kin- Write that allows users to choose arbitrary, short and …

Development Of Novel Models To Study Deep Brain Effects Of Cortical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Farheen Syeda

Theses and Dissertations

Neurological disorders require varying types and degrees of treatments depending on the symptoms and underlying causes of the disease. Patients suffering from medication-refractory symptoms often undergo further treatment in the form of brain stimulation, e.g. electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). These treatments are popular and have been shown to relieve various symptoms for patients with neurological conditions. However, the underlying effects of the stimulation, and subsequently the causes of symptom-relief, are not very well understood. In particular, TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation therapy which uses time-varying magnetic …

Examining A Hate Speech Corpus For Hate Speech Detection And Popularity Prediction, Filip Klubicka, Raquel Fernandez

Conference papers

As research on hate speech becomes more and more relevant every day, most of it is still focused on hate speech detection. By attempting to replicate a hate speech detection experiment performed on an existing Twitter corpus annotated for hate speech, we highlight some issues that arise from doing research in the field of hate speech, which is essentially still in its infancy. We take a critical look at the training corpus in order to understand its biases, while also using it to venture beyond hate speech detection and investigate whether it can be used to shed light on other …

Electrons Dynamics Control By Shaping Femtosecond Laser Pulses In Micro/Nanofabrication: Modeling, Method, Measurement And Application, Lan Jiang, An-Dong Wang, Bo Li, Tian-Hong Cui, Yong-Feng Lu Jan 2018

Electrons Dynamics Control By Shaping Femtosecond Laser Pulses In Micro/Nanofabrication: Modeling, Method, Measurement And Application, Lan Jiang, An-Dong Wang, Bo Li, Tian-Hong Cui, Yong-Feng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

During femtosecond laser fabrication, photons are mainly absorbed by electrons, and the subsequent energy transfer from electrons to ions is of picosecond order. Hence, lattice motion is negligible within the femtosecond pulse duration, whereas femtosecond photon-electron interactions dominate the entire fabrication process. Therefore, femtosecond laser fabrication must be improved by controlling localized transient electron dynamics, which poses a challenge for measuring and controlling at the electron level during fabrication processes. Pump-probe spectroscopy presents a viable solution, which can be used to observe electron dynamics during a chemical reaction. In fact, femtosecond pulse durations are shorter than many physical/chemical characteristic times, …

Ears-Dm: Efficient Auto Correction Retrieval Scheme For Data Management In Edge Computing, Kai Fan, Jie Yin, Kuan Zhang, Hui Li, Yintang Wang Jan 2018

Ears-Dm: Efficient Auto Correction Retrieval Scheme For Data Management In Edge Computing, Kai Fan, Jie Yin, Kuan Zhang, Hui Li, Yintang Wang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Edge computing is an extension of cloud computing that enables messages to be acquired and processed at low cost. Many terminal devices are being deployed in the edge network to sense and deal with the massive data. By migrating part of the computing tasks from the original cloud computing model to the edge device, the message is running on computing resources close to the data source. The edge computing model can effectively reduce the pressure on the cloud computing center and lower the network bandwidth consumption. However, the security and privacy issues in edge computing are worth noting. In this …

Optimal Computational Power Allocation In Multi-Access Mobile Edge Computing For Blockchain, Yuan Wu, Xiangxu Chen, Jiajun Shi, Kejie Ni, Liping Qian, Liang Huang, Kuan Zhang Jan 2018

Optimal Computational Power Allocation In Multi-Access Mobile Edge Computing For Blockchain, Yuan Wu, Xiangxu Chen, Jiajun Shi, Kejie Ni, Liping Qian, Liang Huang, Kuan Zhang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Blockchain has emerged as a decentralized and trustable ledger for recording and storing digital transactions. The mining process of Blockchain, however, incurs a heavy computational workload for miners to solve the proof-of-work puzzle (i.e., a series of the hashing computation), which is prohibitive from the perspective of the mobile terminals (MTs). The advanced multi-access mobile edge computing (MEC), which enables the MTs to offload part of the computational workloads (for solving the proof-of-work) to the nearby edge-servers (ESs), provides a promising approach to address this issue. By offloading the computational workloads via multi-access MEC, the MTs can effectively increase their …

Effect Of Weld Nugget Size On Failure Mode And Mechanical Properties Of Microscale Resistance Spot Welds On Ti–1al–1mn Ultrathin Foils, Feng Chen, Shiding Sun, Zhenwu Ma, G Q. Tong, Xiang Huang Jan 2018

Effect Of Weld Nugget Size On Failure Mode And Mechanical Properties Of Microscale Resistance Spot Welds On Ti–1al–1mn Ultrathin Foils, Feng Chen, Shiding Sun, Zhenwu Ma, G Q. Tong, Xiang Huang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We use tensile–shear tests to investigate the failure modes of Ti–1Al–1Mn microscale resistance spot welds and to determine how the failure mode affects the microstructure, microhardness profile, and mechanical performance. Two different failure modes were revealed: interfacial failure mode and pullout failure mode. The welds that fail by pullout failure mode have much better mechanical properties than those that fail by interfacial failure mode. The results show that weld nugget size is also a principal factor that determines the failure mode of microscale resistance spot welds. A minimum weld nugget size exists above which all specimens fail by pullout failure …

Metasurface Base On Uneven Layered Fractal Elements For Ultra-Wideband Rcs Reduction, Jianxun Su, Yueyang Cui, Zengrui Li, Yaoqing (Lamar) Yang, Yongxing Che, Hongcheng Yin

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A novel metasurface based on uneven layered fractal elements is designed and fabricated for ultra-wideband radar cross section (RCS) reduction in this paper. The proposed metasurface consists of two fractal subwavelength elements with different layer thickness. The reflection phase difference of 180◦ (±37◦) between two unit cells covers an ultra-wide frequency range. Ultra-wideband RCS reduction results from the phase cancellation between two local waves produced by these two unit cells. The diffuse scattering of electromagnetic (EM) waves is caused by the randomized phase distribution, leading to a low monostatic and bistatic RCS simultaneously. This metasurface can achieve …

Comparative Study On Various Dielectric Barriers And Their Effect On Breakdown Voltage, Elham Foruzan, Amir A. S. Akmal, Kaveh Niayesh, Jeremy Lin, Desh Deepak Sharma

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Non-pressurised air is extensively used as basic insulation medium in high-voltage equipment. Unfortunately, an inherent property of air-insulated design is that the system tends to become physically large. On the other hand, the application of dielectric barriers can increase the breakdown voltage and therefore decrease the size of the equipment. In this study, the impact of dielectric barriers on breakdown voltage enhancement is investigated under both direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac) applied voltages. For this purpose, three kinds of dielectric barriers in two different high-voltage electrode structures are investigated. In the first structure, several experiments are carried out …

Elevated Temperature Dependence Of The Anisotropic Visible-To-Ultraviolet Dielectric Function Of Monoclinic Β-Ga2o3, Alyssa Mock, Jeremy Vanderslice, Rafal Korlacki, John A. Woollam, Mathias Schubert

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We report on the temperature dependence of the dielectric tensor elements of n-type conductive β-Ga2O3 from 22 °C to 550 °C in the spectral range of 1.5 eV–6.4 eV. We present the temperature dependence of the excitonic and band-to-band transition energy parameters using a previously described eigendielectric summation approach [A. Mock et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 245205 (2017)]. We utilize a Bose-Einstein analysis of the temperature dependence of the observed transition energies and reveal electron coupling with average phonon temperature in excellent agreement with the average over all longitudinal phonon plasmon coupled modes reported previously [M. …

Flow Patterns Through Vascular Graft Models With And Without Cuffs, Chia Min Leong, Gary B. Nackman, Timothy Wei Jan 2018

Flow Patterns Through Vascular Graft Models With And Without Cuffs, Chia Min Leong, Gary B. Nackman, Timothy Wei

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The shape of a bypass graft plays an important role on its efficacy. Here, we investigated flow through two vascular graft designs±with and without cuff at the anastomosis. We conducted Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) measurements to obtain the flow field information through these vascular grafts. Two pulsatile flow waveforms corresponding to cardiac cycles during the rest and the excitation states, with 10% and without retrograde flow out the proximal end of the native artery were examined. In the absence of retrograde flow, the straight end-to-side graft showed recirculation and stagnation regions that lasted throughout the full cardiac cycle with …

Dislocations Interaction Induced Structural Instability In Intermetallic Al2cu, Qing Zhou, Jian Wang, Amit Misra, Ping Huang, Fei Wang, Kewei Xu Jan 2018

Dislocations Interaction Induced Structural Instability In Intermetallic Al2cu, Qing Zhou, Jian Wang, Amit Misra, Ping Huang, Fei Wang, Kewei Xu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Intermetallic precipitates are widely used to tailor mechanical properties of structural alloys but are often destabilized during plastic deformation. Using atomistic simulations, we elucidate structural instability mechanisms of intermetallic precipitates associated with dislocation motion in a model system of Al2Cu. Interaction of non-coplanar <001> dislocation dipoles during plastic deformation results in anomalous reactions—the creation of vacancies accompanied with climb and collective glide of <001> dislocation associated with the dislocation core change and atomic shuffle—accounting for structural instability in intermetallic Al2Cu. This process is profound with decreasing separation of non-coplanar dislocations and increasing temperature and is likely to be …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Stent implantation is widely used to treat blocked lumen. Stents were meshed structure made of polymers and metal alloys, including stainless steel, cobalt chrome and nitinol [1]. Clinical studies had demonstrated that stents helped to scaffold the diseased lesion up to one year when tissue adapted to the stented environment [2]. However, the permanently implanted stents inside artery were associated with complications such as stent fracture, tissue inflammation, in-stent restenosis and thrombosis [3]. Currently, biodegradable stents are attracting more attention due to its potential long-term efficacy in treating blocked lumens. The detailed characterizations of biodegradable stents are essential for the …

Plaque Burden Influences Accurate Classification Of Fibrous Cap Atheroma By In-Vivo Optical Coherence Tomography In A Porcine Model Of Advanced Coronary Atherosclerosis., Christian B. Poulsen, Ryan M. Pedrigi, Nilesh Pareek, Ismail D. Kilic, Niels R. Holm, Jacob F. Bentzon, Hans Erik Botker, Erling Falk, Rob Krams, Ranil De Silva

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Advanced coronary atherosclerosis assessed by in-vivo optical coherence tomography (OCT) has not been directly compared with histology. In a porcine model with human-like coronary atherosclerosis we compared in-vivo OCT images with histology in five animals. We found a high sensitivity but modest specificity of OCT in classifying fibrous cap atheroma (FCA). The modest specificity was caused by misclassification of FCA lesions as pathological intimal thickening. The misclassification most frequently occurred when plaque burden exceeded ~20%. Compared with histology, OCT has high sensitivity but modest specificity for identifying FCA. The study suggests that plaque burden should be considered when interpreting OCT …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In the process of bone regeneration, new bone formation is largely affected by physico-chemical cues in the surrounding microenvironment. Tissue cells reside in a complex scaffold physiological microenvironment. The scaffold should provide certain circumstance full of structural cues to enhance multipotent mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation, osteoblast growth, extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, and subsequent new bone formation. This article reviewed advances in fabrication technology that enable the creation of biomaterials with well-defined pore structure and surface topography, which can be sensed by host tissue cells (esp., stem cells) and subsequently determine cell fates during differentiation. Three important cues, including scaffold …

Heat Transfer Across A Nanoscale Pressurized Air Gap And Its Application In Magnetic Recording, Jinglin Zheng, Yung-Kan Chen, Qin Zhou

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigated how a thermally actuated air bearing slider heats up a fast-spinning storage disk through a highly pressurized nanoscale air gap in a magnetic recording system. A Euleriandescription- based computational approach is developed considering heat conduction through a pressurized air film and near-field radiation across the gap. A set of field equations that govern the air bearing dynamics, slider thermo-mechanics and disk heat dissipation are solved simultaneously through an iterative approach. A temperature field on the same order as the hot slider surface itself is found to be established in the disk. The effective local heat …

Interfacial Characterization By Pull-Out Test Of Bamboo Fibers Embedded In Poly(Lactic Acid), Quentin Viel, Antonella Esposito, Jean-Marc Saiter, Carlo Santulli, Joseph A. Turner

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this work, the apparent shear strength at the interface between a bamboo fiber and the surrounding poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix is quantified. A method for processing pull-out test samples within a controlled embedded length is proposed and the details of the test procedure are presented, along with a critical discussion of the results. Two series of samples are considered: untreated and mercerized bamboo fibers from the same batch, embedded in the same polyester matrix. Electron and optical microscopy are used to observe the fiber–matrix interface before and after the test, and to identify the failure mode of each sample, …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Poly (vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF), a well-recognized electroactive polymer, has been studied extensively over many decades. Recently, there has been increasing interest in tuning the electrical properties of PVDF from ferroelectric to piezoelectric and to pyroelectric, which can be attained via controlling the microscale structure down to the nanoscale structure [1-2]. To optimize the preparation conditions of PVDF and its copolymers, as well as to improve the performance for many applications, comprehensive analytical techniques are of great importance. In this paper, we demonstrate complementary nanoscale characterization and measurement techniques, by conducting a systematic and coordinated study involving scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high …

Reaction Kinetics Of Ethane Partial Oxidation To Acetic Acid, Sulaiman Al-Mayman, Moustafa A. Soliman, Abdulrhman S. Al-Awadi, Yousef S. Al-Zeghayer

Chemical Engineering

The partial oxidation of ethane to ethylene and acetic acid on supported MoVNbPd/TiO2 (P25 of Degussa) has been investigated. Pd was added in a nano-metallic form. The catalyst composition was also different from similar studied catalysts. This results in a better selectivity towards acetic acid formation. The reaction was carried out in a tubular reactor at temperature range 225–275 °C, total pressure range 0–200 psig and oxygen percentage in the feed gas of 10–40%. The feed gas contains ethane and oxygen. In this work, we develop a kinetic model for the reaction for the developed catalyst. In this model, we …
