Effectiveness Of Biocide Substitution And Management Plan Implementation For The Control Of, Adelmarie Bones

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

After the notorious outbreak and discovery of Legionella bacteria in 1976, the waterborne pathogen was added to the list of disease-causing agents associated with the built environment. Legionella pneumophila was discovered when it was identified as the agent that caused 34 deaths and an outbreak of pneumonia-like symptoms in several attendees of the 1976 American Legion Convention held in Philadelphia (OSHA, 2017).

Recently published data from the year 2015 reported more than 6,000 Legionnaires’ cases identified in the United States (CDC, 2016). This is a concerning number given that one in every ten infected persons will die of the disease. …

Demonstration Of Versatile Whispering-Gallery Micro-Lasers For Remote Refractive Index Sensing, Lei Wan, Hengky Chandrahalim, Jian Zhou Mar 2018

Demonstration Of Versatile Whispering-Gallery Micro-Lasers For Remote Refractive Index Sensing, Lei Wan, Hengky Chandrahalim, Jian Zhou

Faculty Publications

We developed chip-scale remote refractive index sensors based on Rhodamine 6G (R6G)-doped polymer micro-ring lasers. The chemical, temperature, and mechanical sturdiness of the fused-silica host guaranteed a flexible deployment of dye-doped polymers for refractive index sensing. The introduction of the dye as gain medium demonstrated the feasibility of remote sensing based on the free-space optics measurement setup. Compared to the R6G-doped TZ-001, the lasing behavior of R6G-doped SU-8 polymer micro-ring laser under an aqueous environment had a narrower spectrum linewidth, producing the minimum detectable refractive index change of 4 x 10−4 RIU. The maximum bulk refractive index sensitivity (BRIS) …

Production, Immobilization And Synthesis Of Pharmacological Derivatives Of Lipase B From Candida Antarctica In Pichia Pastoris, Julia Robert, Evelin A. Manoel, José Carlos Pinto, Denise M. G. Freire, Martina C. C. Pinto, Roberto Fernandez-Lafuente, Francisco Valero Mar 2018

Production, Immobilization And Synthesis Of Pharmacological Derivatives Of Lipase B From Candida Antarctica In Pichia Pastoris, Julia Robert, Evelin A. Manoel, José Carlos Pinto, Denise M. G. Freire, Martina C. C. Pinto, Roberto Fernandez-Lafuente, Francisco Valero

Microbial Engineering

Lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) is widely used because of its excellent enantioselectivity. Producing this recombinant lipase in Pichia pastoris has advantages since it can be cultured in simple media and can reach high cell densities. This capability is especially important when using a constitutive promoter for lipase production, as here. The PPGK promoter is similar to the well-known PGAP promoter and also circumvents the need for inducing production with methanol, which is a hazard when used on a large scale and would increase the downstream production costs, which could be prohibitive for pharmaceutical products.

P-42 Using The Raspberry Pi For Ecl Reaction Analysis, Jonathan Swerdlow

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Using a Raspberry Pi and its camera module, we developed an affordable and easily available system for photographing and analyzing electrochemiluminescent (ECL) reactions. These reactions can be represented as a function of average light intensity over time, allowing for a future program to determine the concentration of certain reactants. Such ECL reactions will be useful in the diagnosis of medical conditions such as cancer without the need for expensive equipment or laboratories. The proposed system will make certain diagnoses easy and available to people across the globe and will likely require only a small blood sample. It will also be …

Can The Presence Of A 1/F Structure In Stride-To-Stride Variability Enable Us To Withstand Falls?, Jenny A. Kent, Andreas Skiadopoulos, Jordan Wickstrom, Nikolaos Stergiou

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Falls are a persistent threat to longevity and quality of life, affecting 1/3 of older adults living in the community each year. There is strong evidence suggesting that a particular pattern within our walking reflects an ability to adapt to a continually changing environment. Specifically, the stride-to-stride patterns of healthy walking have a 1/f frequency spectrum. This has been observed to degrade to varying extents with aging and pathology. The aim of this study was to determine whether the presence of this structure of variability is related to an increased ability to withstand perturbations. We hypothesized that individuals who demonstrated …

Superpositioning High Power Lasers For Mid-Air Image Formation, Auston Viotto

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Abstract

This research evaluates different methods to create voxels, 3-dimensional pixels, in air without the need for special glasses or reflections off of surfaces. Research on the advantages of superimposing or the culmination, focusing, of laser light will be conducted. The point of superpositioning/culmination will be evaluated by the brightness of the voxel due to the Rayleigh Scatter Effect. The voxel’s brightness is dependent on the laser output strength and inversely proportional to its wavelength. Once a superimposed/culminated voxel has been created in the lab the next step will be to manipulate the location of the voxel through 3-dimensional space. …

Scheduling Based On Interruption Analysis And Pso For Strictly Periodic And Preemptive Partitions In Integrated Modular Avionics, Hui Lu, Qianlin Zhou, Zongming Fei, Rongrong Zhou

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Integrated modular avionics introduces the concept of partition and has been widely used in avionics industry. Partitions share the computing resources together. Partition scheduling plays a key role in guaranteeing correct execution of partitions. In this paper, a strictly periodic and preemptive partition scheduling strategy is investigated. First, we propose a partition scheduling model that allows a partition to be interrupted by other partitions, but minimizes the number of interruptions. The model not only retains the execution reliability of the simple partition sets that can be scheduled without interruptions, but also enhances the schedulability of the complex partition sets that …

Orbital Angular Momentum Generation And Detection By Geometric-Phase Based Metasurfaces, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a comprehensive review on the geometric phase based metasurfaces for orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation and detection. Thesemetasurfacesmanipulate the electromagnetic (EM) wave by introducing abrupt phase change, which is strongly dependent on the polarization state of incident EMwave and can be interpreted by geometric phase. Hence, the conventional bulk devices that based on the accumulated phase change along the optical path can be avoided.

Space-Angle Signal Processing Using A Modulated Scatter Array, Nasr Alkhafaji Mar 2018

Space-Angle Signal Processing Using A Modulated Scatter Array, Nasr Alkhafaji

Electrical and Computer Engineering PhD Day

A UHF signal processing technique is described in the Fourier Space-Angle domain that uses an array of scattering elements with reflection coefficients modulated at baseband. The illumination arrival angle distributes a UHF phase across the array, and the baseband modulator phase at each of the array elements determines the radiation angle of the desired scattered product. Undesired products are re-radiated in different directions. Example 1, 2 and 4 element arrays operate at 432 MHz array with 700 Hz modulation. 2 element arrays cancel one sideband, and the 4 element array cancels both the undesired sideband and 2nd order products. Reflection …

A Survey On Network Security-Related Data Collection Technologies, Huaqing Lin, Zheng Yan, Yu Chen, Lifang Zhang

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

Security threats and economic loss caused by network attacks, intrusions, and vulnerabilities have motivated intensive studies on network security. Normally, data collected in a network system can reflect or can be used to detect security threats. We define these data as network security-related data. Studying and analyzing security-related data can help detect network attacks and intrusions, thus making it possible to further measure the security level of the whole network system. Obviously, the first step in detecting network attacks and intrusions is to collect security-related data. However, in the context of big data and 5G, there exist a number of …

The Quest For Hydrological Signatures: Effects Of Data Transformation On Bayesian Inference Of Watershed Models, Mojtaba Sadegh, Morteza Shakeri Majd, Jairo Hernandez, Ali Torabi Haghighi

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hydrological models contain parameters whose values cannot be directly measured in many field-scale projects, hence need to be meaningfully inferred through calibration against historical records. Much progress has been made in development of efficient search algorithms in order to find optimal parameter values and their underlying uncertainty distributions. Yet, relatively little is known about the effects of calibration data (or error residual) transformations on the identifiability of model parameters and reliability of model predictions. Effects of calibration data transformations on the posterior parameter distribution and predictive capability of two parsimonious hydrological models are analyzed herein. Our results depict that calibration …
