Vacuum Field Emission Devices With Integrated Cnts, Leo Kheyn-Kheyfets
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
This research looks at the design and fabrication of sub 100-nm carbon nanotube-based vacuum field emission devices. The devices in this project are based in the Fowler-Nordheim emission of electrons, which allow the devices to hold radiation hardened capabilities due the absence of a semiconductor channel. On top of the radiation hardened capabilities of the Vacuum FETS, the emitter material, SWCNT (Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes) themselves hold radiation hardened capabilities. SWCNT could also be the nanomaterial that replaces silicon in CMOS FETs (Field-Effect- Transistors). Through extensive preparation and testing, a field emission device based on carbon nanotube emitters with an effectiv …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Bubble-Driven Micromixers, Matthew David Rolleston
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
Microfluidics differ from conventional fluid flows in that viscous forces dominate. As a result, microfluidics offer unprecedented control over fluid flows. The precise manipulation of fluids can be applied anywhere from healthcare in medical diagnostics to pharmaceutical companies miniaturizing reactions to reduce reagent consumption. In order to apply microfluidics as a comprehensive solution, unit operations must be performed such as mixing, sorting and dilution. This work investigates the fabrication and characterization of bubble-driven micromixers using inertial micropump technology. Unlike macroscopic fluid flows with turbulence, transport phenomena become restricted in microfluidics. Active mixing approaches apply external forces (such as thermal or …

Enhanced Boron Activation In Xenon Flash Lamp Annealed Polysilicon Through Pre-Amorphization, Adam Rosenfeld
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
Thin film transistors were fabricated to investigate the influence of the addition of a fluorine preamorphization implant on boron activation in the source/drain. The addition of the fluorine resulted in a higher drive current for high dose implants (5x1015 cm-2). The higher current as well as an increased calculated mobility supports the hypothesis that fluorine implant increases boron activation. Device performance was noticed to be dependent on its location on the wafer complicating experimental analysis. Additional system control would allow for more direct treatment comparisons.

A Laboratory Kit For Multimeter Design, Seth Percy, Joshua Perry
A Laboratory Kit For Multimeter Design, Seth Percy, Joshua Perry
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
The multimeter is an important electrical tool and is a combination of many individual instruments. In practice, common multimeter designs are digital and measure voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, etc., using a single set of probes. Before the digital age, the world relied on analog displays. Some argue that analog displays are outdated technology. However, this overlooks one of the most important characteristics provided by the analog display, which is its ability to provide an instantaneous visual perception. Analog displays are currently used for many applications in aviation and automobiles, demonstrating their continuing usefulness in the field. In the multimeter, the …

Wearable technology allows users to monitor their activity and pursue a healthy lifestyle through the use of embedded sensors. Such wearables usually connect to a mobile application that allows them to set their profile and keep track of their goals. However, due to the relatively “high maintenance” of such applications, where a significant amount of user feedback is expected, users who are very busy, or not as self-motivated, stop using them after a while. It has been shown that accountability improves commitment to an exercise routine. In this work, we present the PRO-Fit framework, a personalized fitness assistant aiming at …

Cob: A Sustainable Building Material, Daniel Eberhard, Joseph Novara, Brandon Popovec
Cob: A Sustainable Building Material, Daniel Eberhard, Joseph Novara, Brandon Popovec
Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses
Cob is a sustainable building material used in residential applications as a replacement for typical one-story timber or concrete structures. Cob heavily lacks the testing and modern research required for permissible construction under current residential building codes. Further tests involving earthquake and lateral loading are required to implement cob into the California Residential Building Code. In this report, four cob walls, each with different reinforcement mechanisms, were tested to observe their failure modes and find the maximum deflection and load of each wall. Through this testing, it was determined that steel reinforcement within cob walls can provide more ductile behavior …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Theses
Because of their superior thermal and electrical properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene (Gr) are promising candidates to replace copper and tungsten as interconnect materials in the most advanced integrated circuit technologies. We explore a three-dimensional all-carbon interconnect structure, consisting of vertically aligned CNTs grown directly on multi-layer graphene (MLG). The objective is to grow the CNTs with little or no damage to the graphene underlayer. We start with fabricating test structures using both plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and thermal CVD throughout the CNT growth process to confirm the results of previous work of our research group. We …

Implementation Of 5s At A Survey Laboratory In Western Kentucky University, Mercy Akunna Ebuetse
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
5S is a technique used alongside methodologies such as lean, total quality management and six-sigma for continuous improvement and workplace standardization. Nonetheless, despite the upsurge in the implementation of 5S by lean manufacturing facilities and other industries, educational laboratories appear to be lagging. Taking into consideration the benefits of implementing 5S within industry, it has become crucial to replicate the technique in an educational laboratory to obtain equivalent results. To upgrade educational laboratories into industrial laboratories, 5S (sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain) is required to improve the laboratory’s ergonomics that subsequently increases efficiency, productivity, and lessens waste …
