Design Optimization Of Polymer Heat Exchanger For Automated Household-Scale Solar Water Pasteurizer, David C. Denkenberger, Joshua M. Pearce Apr 2018

Design Optimization Of Polymer Heat Exchanger For Automated Household-Scale Solar Water Pasteurizer, David C. Denkenberger, Joshua M. Pearce

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications

A promising approach to reducing the >870,000 deaths/year globally from unsafe water is flow-through solar water pasteurization systems (SWPs). Unfortunately, demonstrated systems have high capital costs, which limits access for the poor. The most expensive component of such systems is the heat exchanger (HX). Thus, this study focuses on cost optimization of HX designs for flow-through SWPs using high-effectiveness polymer microchannel HXs. The theoretical foundation for the cost optimization of a polymer microchannel HX is provided, and outputs are plotted in order to provide guidelines for designers to perform HX optimizations. These plots are used in two case studies: (1) …

Electric-Field Assisted Manipulation And Self-Assembly Of Particle Suspensions, Edison Chijioke Amah Apr 2018

Electric-Field Assisted Manipulation And Self-Assembly Of Particle Suspensions, Edison Chijioke Amah

Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is to model the processes by which particles suspended in liquids and at liquid surfaces self-assemble when they are subjected to uniform and non-uniform electric fields. To understand the role of electric forces, three related problems were studied numerically and experimentally.

In the first problem, particles are assumed to be suspended inside a liquid and a nonuniform electric field is applied using electrodes mounted in the domain walls which causes positively polarized particles to collect in the regions where the electric field intensity is locally maximal and the negatively polarized particles collect in the regions …

A Methodological Framework For Quantifying Impacts Of Truck Traffic On Regional Network With Implications To Transport Policy, Chaitanya Narendra Pathak Apr 2018

A Methodological Framework For Quantifying Impacts Of Truck Traffic On Regional Network With Implications To Transport Policy, Chaitanya Narendra Pathak

Dissertations

Increased global trade has promoted the importance of shipping industry and the introduction of mega-ships has created an opportunity to be more cost-effective. Because of this, the expected change in freight transportation influences the operating regimes and schedules at the port terminals. Trucks being the predominant mode of transportation used to carry the freight transport, there is a growing concern about the impact of trucks in the region. The problems are further expected to grow as the improvements to resolve them are hindered by funding shortfalls. Public agencies are therefore involved in developing comprehensive state freight plans that outline immediate …

Combustion Of Nanocomposite Thermite Powders, Ian Monk Apr 2018

Combustion Of Nanocomposite Thermite Powders, Ian Monk

Dissertations

This work investigates combustion of nanocomposite thermite powders prepared by arrested reactive milling (ARM). The focus is on how ARM as a top-down approach to nano-thermite building generating fully-dense nanocomposite particles with dimensions of 1-100 µm affects the rates and mechanism of their combustion. A variety of thermites are milled using both aluminum and zirconium as fuels combined with several oxidizers (WoO3, MoO3, CuO, Fe2O3, and Bi2O3). The powders are ignited using both an electrostatic discharge (ESD) and a CO2 laser beam.

A range of parameters vary …

Fabrication Of Mosfets On Ingaas With Al2o3, John Colern Apr 2018

Fabrication Of Mosfets On Ingaas With Al2o3, John Colern

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

The goal of this project was to fabricate MOSFETs on InGaAs with an Al2O3 gate dielectric deposited with ALD. The initial structure of the device was planned out, the process was designed, and then each step of the process was characterized prior to the fabrication of the devices. The devices were fabricated, and then electrically tested. Each of the separate processes were shown to be repeatable and accurate. Errors with design rules in the mask lay- out led to shorting of the devices from source to drain, however the gate was found to be electrically isolated.

Monolayer Doping (Mld) For Ultra-Shallow Junction Mosfet Fabrication, Jenna Doran Apr 2018

Monolayer Doping (Mld) For Ultra-Shallow Junction Mosfet Fabrication, Jenna Doran

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

As devices continue to shrink following the trend of Moore's law, and non-planar devices such as Fin- FETs and 3D nanostructures become more common, ultra-shallow (sub-50 nm) junctions become more desirable. Semiconductor devices are traditionally doped using a combination of ion implantation or spin-on dopant and thermal diffusion techniques; however, these have limitations such as crystalline damage, use of hazardous chemicals, or glassy skin formation. Monolayer doping (MLD) provides a non-destructive and less hazardous method for doping the silicon surface. MLD creates a self-assembled monolayer of a dopant-containing compound followed by a rapid thermal anneal to form ultra-shallow junctions with …

Annealing Study Of Ald Deposited Ferroelectric Aluminum-Doped Hafnium Oxide, Joshua L. Eschle Apr 2018

Annealing Study Of Ald Deposited Ferroelectric Aluminum-Doped Hafnium Oxide, Joshua L. Eschle

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

With the acquisition of a Savannah ALD tool at RIT, it is now possible to deposit ferroelectric Al-doped HfO2 (Al:HfO2) in the SMFL. Recipes for Al:HfO2 have been developed using tetrakis(dimethylamido)hafnium(IV) (TDMAHf) as a Hafnium precursor, and trimethyl aluminum (TMA) as an Aluminum precursor. Various percentages of Al in the Al:HfO2, controlled by the number of TMA cycles during the ALD deposition, were deposited in order to observe the effect of Al concentration on ferroelectricity. To determine the dependence of ferroelectricity on annealing conditions, samples underwent rapid thermal annealing steps at varying temperatures and times. The dependence of a top …

Vacuum Field Emission Devices With Integrated Cnts, Leo Kheyn-Kheyfets Apr 2018

Vacuum Field Emission Devices With Integrated Cnts, Leo Kheyn-Kheyfets

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

This research looks at the design and fabrication of sub 100-nm carbon nanotube-based vacuum field emission devices. The devices in this project are based in the Fowler-Nordheim emission of electrons, which allow the devices to hold radiation hardened capabilities due the absence of a semiconductor channel. On top of the radiation hardened capabilities of the Vacuum FETS, the emitter material, SWCNT (Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes) themselves hold radiation hardened capabilities. SWCNT could also be the nanomaterial that replaces silicon in CMOS FETs (Field-Effect- Transistors). Through extensive preparation and testing, a field emission device based on carbon nanotube emitters with an effectiv …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Bubble-Driven Micromixers, Matthew David Rolleston Apr 2018

Fabrication And Characterization Of Bubble-Driven Micromixers, Matthew David Rolleston

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Microfluidics differ from conventional fluid flows in that viscous forces dominate. As a result, microfluidics offer unprecedented control over fluid flows. The precise manipulation of fluids can be applied anywhere from healthcare in medical diagnostics to pharmaceutical companies miniaturizing reactions to reduce reagent consumption. In order to apply microfluidics as a comprehensive solution, unit operations must be performed such as mixing, sorting and dilution. This work investigates the fabrication and characterization of bubble-driven micromixers using inertial micropump technology. Unlike macroscopic fluid flows with turbulence, transport phenomena become restricted in microfluidics. Active mixing approaches apply external forces (such as thermal or …

Enhanced Boron Activation In Xenon Flash Lamp Annealed Polysilicon Through Pre-Amorphization, Adam Rosenfeld

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Thin film transistors were fabricated to investigate the influence of the addition of a fluorine preamorphization implant on boron activation in the source/drain. The addition of the fluorine resulted in a higher drive current for high dose implants (5x1015 cm-2). The higher current as well as an increased calculated mobility supports the hypothesis that fluorine implant increases boron activation. Device performance was noticed to be dependent on its location on the wafer complicating experimental analysis. Additional system control would allow for more direct treatment comparisons.
