Applications including micro-robotics and haptics have motivated extensive exploration of dielectric actuators due to their high bandwidth and high efficiency at cm and mm scales. To maximize their benefits, dielectric actuators, including piezoelectric and electrostatic actuators, typically require high driving voltages, ranging from 100V to several kV. Generating such high driving voltages presents a challenge for drive circuits, particularly when powered by a small battery. Dielectric actuators are predominantly capacitive in most circumstances, necessitating the drive circuits to deliver and recover reactive energy for efficient operation. This project presents the development of a high-performance, cost-effective, and powerefficient pipelined architecture designed to execute 10,000 Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) per second on an Efinix Trion T120 FPGA. Each FFT processes 4096 signed 13-bit elements, facilitating real-time data analysis for a Time-Domain Impedance Probe (TDIP) operating at a maximum data rate of 490 Mbit/s. The algorithm utilizes the built-in multipliers and dual-port memory cells of the FPGA to optimize data storage, transfer, and processing. It achieves this high performance while only using approximately 4% of the Look-Up Tables (LUTs), 7% of the integrated RAM cells, and 15% of the …

Object tracking is a widely studied computer vision task with video and instance analysis applications. While paradigms such as tracking-by-regression,-detection,-attention have advanced the field, generative modeling offers new potential. Although some studies explore the generative process in instance-based understanding tasks, they rely on prediction refinement in the coordinate space rather than the visual domain. Instead, this paper presents Tracking-by-Diffusion, a novel paradigm for object tracking in video, leveraging visual generative models via the perspective of autoregressive models. This dissertation presents novel algorithms to improve the mapping capabilities of a 360-degree underwater Pulsed Laser Line Scanner LiDAR (PLLS-360°). Due to its 360° field-of-view (FOV), the PLLS-360° is a compact full-waveform omnidirectional imager suitable for seafloor mapping, underwater asset inspection, object detection, ice-sheet mapping, and construction progress monitoring. The proposed methodology includes an improved waveform fitting technique for saturated waveform recovery, detection array response correction, radiometric corrections, and fusion of LiDAR and sonar bathymetric datasets. This dissertation develops an integrated modeling and solution framework for direct temporary disaster housing logistics under demand uncertainty. The proposed framework addresses the problem from short-term, long-term, and computational perspectives. First, a two-stage chance-constrained stochastic programming (TSCC) model is developed for short-term housing logistic planning, with demand scenarios generated via a data-driven spatial regression model that captures the relationship between housing demand, hazard exposure, and socioeconomic factors. A case study based on Hurricane Ian demonstrates that the TSCC model outperforms deterministic and traditional scenario-based models in both solution quality and robustness. Mechanically assisted corrosion and non-mechanically (chemically) driven corrosion in modular junctions of orthopedic implants using cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys remain clinical concerns and may contribute to implant failure. The underlying corrosion mechanisms are not yet fully understood, leaving a critical research gap. We hypothesized that corrosion in modular junctions may be driven by aggressive local environments, including fretting, metal ion release (cobalt ion, Co2+), low pH and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This dissertation consists of three essays in economic history, unified by a focus on one of America's earliest transportation infrastructures, the canal system, in nineteenth-century New York. Each chapter explores a different aspect of the state's transformation: its economy, politics, and finance, each of which helped construct New York as the Empire State.

The first chapter studies the economic impact of canals on economic modernization from three aspects: sectoral transition, urbanization, and banking development. Pooled rideshare is a unique transportation mode offering that allows riders increased flexibility and accessibility over public transportation, and decreased cost relative to personal vehicles or traditional rideshare. The resistive pulse technique characterizes single analytes by detecting fluctuations in the ion current as they pass through a narrow orifice connecting two electrolyte-filled chambers, each containing a single electrode. The amplitude, shape, frequency, and duration of these fluctuations primarily provide information about the analyte’s size, shape, concentration, and net surface charge, respectively. One configuration for resistive pulse measurements is of an electrolyte-filled nanopipette immersed in a bath, where the nanopipette tip acts as the nanoscale orifice. This dissertation presents a novel approach to analyzing and controlling nonlinear systems using the Koopman operator framework and data-driven methods. Nonlinear power systems, characterized by complex behaviors and sensitivity to initial conditions, pose significant challenges for stability and safety assessment, especially during transient events.

The first part of this work focuses on reachability analysis using the spectral properties of the Koopman operator. Understanding the directional properties of porous media is essential for accurately predicting flow behavior, reactive transport, and fluid-solid interactions in systems ranging from geothermal reservoirs to energy storage devices and biological tissues. Directional variations in permeability - reflecting a medium's response to flow at different angular orientations - are particularly important for complex, inherently anisotropic geometries. This dissertation investigates the influence of geometric design on the mechanical properties of BTO structures fabricated via 3D printing. Using finite element modeling (FEM), we simulate mechanical stress responses across a range of architected designs. Results reveal that specific design strategies can significantly enhance performance by promoting favorable stress distributions. This work highlights the critical role of structural design in optimizing functional ceramics and provides a computational framework for the design of next-generation piezoelectric devices.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is currently ranked as the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, causing more than 700,000 deaths a year. The liver is important in blood filtration and metabolism, and for this reason is a prime target for drug delivery, with lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) showing promise as carriers due to their natural hepatic tropism. However, LNP efficacy is decreased in HCC due to the limited understanding of liver physiology in cancerous environments. This thesis presents a study on the application of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) technology for detecting pavement's strain response with high spatial resolution. Using a Rayleigh-based optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) system, DFOS sensors were calibrated and embedded in full-scale asphalt slabs subjected to accelerated loading using a Model Mobile Load Simulator 3 (MMLS3). Calibration of the DFOS sensors was conducted using a three-point bending flexural test with known load conditions and reference strain gauges to validate theoretical and numerical models.
