Articulated Robot Hand, Nick Lo Bue, Tanner Peterson, Sam Steup, Andres Suarez-Domit

Mechatronics Final Projects

The purpose of this project is to create a robotic hand that articulates and grips objects like a human hand. The robotic hand includes a single miniature servo for each finger joint, as shown in Figures 2 through 4, allowing full and independent articulation of the nine different primary joints in the hand. The motion of each servo, and therefore each finger joint, is governed by a PIC microcontroller. Use of a microcontroller-based control scheme, as opposed to PC-based control, allows for a more portable, versatile design.

Automated Farm Tunnels: Scaled Prototype, Axel Anderson, Bryan Granizo, Samuel Studebaker

Mechatronics Final Projects

The use of covered tunnels in agriculture has increased dramatically in the Texas Hill Country over the past few years. These tunnels are similar to greenhouses but do not have climate control so they need natural venting for humidity and temperature purposes, which means that the plastic covering the tunnel (see Figure 1) needs to be raised and lowered repeatedly. The first generation of these tunnels seen in Figure 1 did not have a mechanism to roll the plastic up or down, but the second generation tunnel shown in Figure 2 has implemented a pipe, which will be referred to …

Role Of Local Renin-Angiotensin System In Altering Valve Interstitial Cell Phenotype, Sophia Scalise

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Hypertension is a disorder prevalent in adults around the world and is a common attributable cause of heart disease and mortality [1]. Calcification is much more common in the aortic valve than the other three heart valves [2]. Aortic valve interstitial cells (VICs), the principal cell type found in the human aortic valve, have been linked to disease development when they change in phenotype to become osteoblast like cells [3]. The phenotypes of these cells play a role in the development of calcification in the aortic valves [4].

Angiotensin II is a hormone in the body that has been implicated …

Antibacterial Properties Of A Cationic Imidazolium-Containing Poly(Ionic Liquid), Kaitlyn P. Brickey

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Poly(ionic liquids), or PILs, have been shown to have a number of biological applications as ligands, drug delivery vehicles, and nonviral DNA delivery mechanisms. Additionally, PILs have been proven to be efficient antibacterials. Imidazolium-containing PILs have promising results in antibacterial studies, but relating to their chain and charge density, only the effects of mono- & bis-imidazolium PILs have been sufficiently described in literature. The work detailed in this thesis aimed to further existing research on the effect of chain density by controlling the UV-initiator immobilization time. The effects of chain density were investigated by grafting poly(vinylimidazolium chloride) onto SiO2 …

Optimizing The Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model For Uncertainty Assessment With Serial, Multicore And Distributed Accelerations, Andrew Adriance

Master's Theses

Hydrology is the study of water. Hydrology tracks various attributes of water such as its quality and movement. As a tool Hydrology allows researchers to investigate topics such as the impacts of wildfires, logging, and commercial development. With perfect and complete data collection researchers could answer these questions with complete certainty. However, due to cost and potential sources of error this is impractical. As such researchers rely on simulations.

The Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model(also referenced to as DHSVM) is a scientific mathematical model to numerically represent watersheds. Hydrology, as with all fields, continues to produce large amounts of data …

Superhydrophobic, Carbon-Infiltrated Carbon Nanotubes On Si And 316l Stainless Steel With Tunable Geometry, Kimberly A. Stevens, Christian D. Esplin, Taylor M. Davis, D. Jacob Butterfield, Philip S. Ng, Anton E. Bowden, Brian D. Jensen, Brian D. Iverson

Faculty Publications

Use of carbon nanotubes to create superhydrophobic coatings has been considered due to their ability to offer a relatively uniform nanostructure. However, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) may be considered delicate with a typical diameter of tens of nanometers for a multi‐walled CNT; as‐grown carbon nanotubes often require the addition of a thin‐film hydrophobic coating to render them superhydrophobic. Furthermore, fine control over the diameter of the as‐grown CNTs, or overall nanostructure is difficult. This work demonstrates the utility of using carbon infiltration to layer amorphous carbon on multi‐walled nanotubes to improve structural integrity and achieve superhydrophobic behavior with tunable geometry. These …

The Natural Aging Effect On Hardenability In Al-Mg-Si: A Complex Interaction Between Composition And Heat Treatment Parameters, Alex Poznak, Violet Thole, Paul G. Sanders

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The technological relevance of Al-Mg-Si alloys has been rapidly growing over the last decade. Of particular interest to current and future applications is the problematic negative effect of prior natural aging on subsequent artificial age hardening. The influence of natural aging is dependent on both processing and compositional variables and has origins that are far from well-understood. This work examines the hardenability of 6000 series alloys under a wide range of conditions, paying particular attention to the natural aging effect. Experimental variables include alloy composition (Mg + Si, Mg/Si), cooling rate after solutionization, and duration of prior natural aging. Hardenability …

Elucidating The Effect Of Water-To-Cement Ratio On The Hydration Mechanisms Of Cement, Aida Margarita Ley-Hernandez, Jonathan Lapeyre, Rachel Cook, Aditya Kumar, Dimitri Feys May 2018

Elucidating The Effect Of Water-To-Cement Ratio On The Hydration Mechanisms Of Cement, Aida Margarita Ley-Hernandez, Jonathan Lapeyre, Rachel Cook, Aditya Kumar, Dimitri Feys

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The hydration of cement is often modeled as a phase boundary nucleation and growth (pBNG) process. Classical pBNG models, based on the use of isotropic and constant growth rate of the main hydrate, that is, calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H), are unable to explain the lack of any significant effect of the water-to-cement (w/c) ratio on the hydration kinetics of cement. This paper presents a modified form of the pBNG model, in which the anisotropic growth of C-S-H is allowed to vary in relation to the nonlinear evolution of its supersaturation in solution. Results show that once the supercritical C-S-H nuclei form, their …

Corrosion Resistance Of Pipeline Steel With Damaged Enamel Coating And Cathodic Protection, Liang Fan, Signo Tadeu Dos Reis, Genda Chen, Michael L. Koenigstein

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the first report on the corrosion resistance of pipeline steel with damaged enamel coating and cathodic protection in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. In particular, dual cells are set up to separate the solution in contact with the damaged and intact enamel coating areas, to produce a local corrosion resistance measurement for the first time. Enamel-coated steel samples, with two levels of cathodic protection, are tested to investigate their impedance by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and their cathodic current demand by a potentiostatic test. Due to its glass transition temperature, the enamel-coated pipeline can be operated on …

Impact Of Computer Tablets On General Aviation Flight Training, Anthony Saitabau Lolchoki May 2018

Impact Of Computer Tablets On General Aviation Flight Training, Anthony Saitabau Lolchoki

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past two decades, Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) and Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) have developed from flight publication storage devices hosted on modified laptop computers into fully interactive near-avionics-quality navigation equipment based on consumer-grade tablet computers. Broadly speaking, the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) 14 regulates the use of this type of equipment for commercial airlines, commuter operations, and fractional ownership operators, but have neglected the General Aviation (GA) sector. Due, in part, to this lack of governance, little has been known about EFB use in GA. After using an internet-based survey, this study was conducted to examine whether …

Effect Of Cavitation Regimes On Stepped Diesel Injectors, David Michael Sykes May 2018

Effect Of Cavitation Regimes On Stepped Diesel Injectors, David Michael Sykes

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this work was to determine the effects of different cavitating flow regimes on a stepped orifice geometry relevant to diesel injectors. Conventional diesel orifice geometries consist of a single tapered or straight circular passage. The geometry used in this work had two circular passages in series: a first orifice that was similar to conventional geometries and a second larger orifice immediately downstream that induced cavitation. The large orifice served to stabilize the flow, allowing for different flow regimes to exist at the exit plane of the large orifice (single-phase, intermittent bubbly, bubbly, annular, etc.). A series of …

The world has acknowledged climate change as a global crisis that demands considerable attention, with one of the largest culprit being carbon emissions from industrial processing and power generation. While reduction in carbon emissions is the principal action towards mitigating the effects of climate change, scientists and engineers have given increased attention to alternative sources of energy as well as methods of carbon sequestration to coax traditional manufactory and industry into environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. One technology of this nature is the use of wafer-enhanced electrodeionization (WE-EDI) membranes to convert gaseous carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial flue …

Surface Area And Electrocatalytic Properties Of Feni Nanoparticles For The Oxygen Evolution Reaction (Oer), James Burrow May 2018

Surface Area And Electrocatalytic Properties Of Feni Nanoparticles For The Oxygen Evolution Reaction (Oer), James Burrow

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Iron-nickel bimetallic electrocatalysts have recently emerged as some of the best candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolyte. Understanding the effects of composition and morphology of iron-nickel nanoparticles is crucial for optimization and enhanced electrocatalyst performance. Both physical surface area and electrochemical surface area (ECSA) are functions of morphology. In this study, four different iron-nickel nanoparticle catalysts were synthesized. The catalysts were varied based on morphology (alloy versus core-shell) and composition (low, medium, and high stabilizer concentration). Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis was conducted on three of the synthesized iron-nickel nanoparticles using a physisorption analyzer while electrochemical …

Sulfate Removal From Mine Impacted Waters, Derek Richard May 2018

Sulfate Removal From Mine Impacted Waters, Derek Richard

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Woo Pig Sulfate (WPS) has developed two methods for reducing levels of calcium sulfate in mine impacted waters, a “hot process” and a two-stage nanofiltration process. Both processes were designed to treat gypsum saturated water that is currently being pumped via interceptor wells to prevent the spread of a sulfate plume into a nearby community. Each solution was designed for Freeport McMoran’s Sierrita mine in Green Valley, Arizona, which was visited in order to gain insight about the problem. Below 250 ppm on the treated stream, nanofiltration and the hot process achieve overall recoveries of 84 and 99%, respectively. The …

Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Training Programs Through The Lens Of A Traditional Flight Training University, David Thirtyacre, C. Woodyard May 2018

Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Training Programs Through The Lens Of A Traditional Flight Training University, David Thirtyacre, C. Woodyard

Publications

According to CFR 14 Part 107, an RPC is issued strictly on the results of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) knowledge test and background security check. This leaves commercial sUAS operators on their own to determine the training and proficiency required to fly safely and effectively. Regardless of the learning method, the question becomes, what knowledge and maneuvers should be learned, and to what proficiency level? This paper explores specific knowledge and skills which should be mandatory for all sUAS commercial pilots and recommends a probation period to gain experience before receiving an unrestricted RPC.

Applying Attribute-Based Encryption In Two-Way Radio Talk Groups: A Feasibility Study, Michael Andreas Gough May 2018

Applying Attribute-Based Encryption In Two-Way Radio Talk Groups: A Feasibility Study, Michael Andreas Gough

Theses and Dissertations

In two-way radio systems, talk groups are used to organize communication. Some situations may call for creating a temporary talk group, but there are no straightforward ways to do this. Making a new talk group requires programming radios off-line. Temporary groups can be created, but this requires inputting radio IDs which is tedious on a radio's limited controls. By describing group members using attributes, ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) can be used to quickly create sub-groups of a talk group. This scheme requires fewer button presses and messages sent in the new talk group are kept secret. CP-ABE can be used …

Development Of A Digital Rain-Sensing Irrigation Pump Controller And An Android Enabled Bluetooth Paddlewheel Flowmeter, Jayendra Mishra May 2018

Development Of A Digital Rain-Sensing Irrigation Pump Controller And An Android Enabled Bluetooth Paddlewheel Flowmeter, Jayendra Mishra

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For better irrigation efficiency, it is recommended that farmers track their water consumption to avoid over-irrigating. However, it is difficult to implement this as it is labor intensive to supervise pumps manually and available technologies require high investment. Therefore, a rain sensing pump controller for 3-phase electric irrigation pumps and a stand-alone portable Android enabled paddlewheel flowmeter has been developed to test their feasibility.

The pump timer is a retrofit device for irrigation pump panels. The controller allows an irrigator to start and stop the pump with less supervision. An infrared rain sensor is integrated with the controller to measure …

Addressing The Regulator's Dilemma: A Self Drive Framework For Balancing Safety And Innovation, Craig Maughan May 2018

Addressing The Regulator's Dilemma: A Self Drive Framework For Balancing Safety And Innovation, Craig Maughan

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Policymakers are tasked with creating regulations that responsibly oversee the growth and deployment of emerging technologies. I argue that the SELF DRIVE Act, currently being deliberated in Congress, offers one such intelligent regulatory structure for autonomous vehicles: it prioritizes public safety over adherence to outdated requirements, giving innovators greater freedom to field-test new designs. More importantly, I examine how key principles of the SELF DRIVE Act should be applied to other emerging technologies currently facing regulatory roadblock. Specifically, I suggest the drone industry be subject to regulatory changes that incentivize safety, allow exploration, and anticipate future growth. Such regulations allow …

Impact Of Seasonal Tree-Cutting Restrictions On Construction Bids, Christopher W. Van Dyke, Steven Waddle, Bryan Gibson, Sarah M. Mccormack, Steven Douglas Kreis

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Many of the maintenance and construction projects undertaken by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) span late spring to early fall (April–October), with this period’s long days, abundant sunshine, and relatively dry conditions being ideal for performing work and minimizing delays from inclement weather. But this compressed timeline for accomplishing work introduces other challenges. Specifically, many of KYTC’s maintenance and construction activities can potentially impact summer habitat of the Indiana bat, which is listed as an endangered species. Removing trees classified as Indiana bat habitat is allowed, however, to do so the Cabinet is required to pay a mitigation fee. The …

Second-Order Sensitivity Analysis Of Uncollided Particle Contributions To Radiation Detector Responses, Dan Gabriel Cacuci, Jeffrey A. Favorite

Faculty Publications

This work presents an application of Cacuci's Second-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (2nd-ASAM) to the simplified Boltzmann equation that models the transport of uncollided particles through a medium to compute efficiently and exactly all of the first- and second-order derivatives (sensitivities) of a detector's response with respect to the system's isotopic number densities, microscopic cross sections, source emission rates, and detector response function. The off-the-shelf PARTISN multigroup discrete ordinates code is employed to solve the equations underlying the 2nd-ASAM. The accuracy of the results produced using PARTISN is verified by using the results of three test configurations: (1) a homogeneous …

Assessing The Quality And Stability Of Recommender Systems, David Shriver May 2018

Assessing The Quality And Stability Of Recommender Systems, David Shriver

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Recommender systems help users to find products they may like when lacking personal experience or facing an overwhelmingly large set of items. However, assessing the quality and stability of recommender systems can present challenges for developers. First, traditional accuracy metrics, such as precision and recall, for validating the quality of recommendations, offer only a coarse, one-dimensional view of the system performance. Second, assessing the stability of a recommender systems requires generating new data and retraining a system, which is expensive. In this work, we present two new approaches for assessing the quality and stability of recommender systems to address these …
