Non-Mpm Mode Coding For Intra Prediction In Video Coding, Taru Kanchan May 2018

Non-Mpm Mode Coding For Intra Prediction In Video Coding, Taru Kanchan

Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses

The High Efficiency Video Coding standard introduced thirty-five intra prediction modes. It employed a method based on three most probable modes (MPM) to improve intra mode coding. This method significantly improved the performance by extracting three MPMs out of the thirty-five intra modes. The Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET) defines sixty-seven intra prediction modes for a possible future video coding standard. In the latest JVET development, six MPMs are chosen, and the remaining sixty-one modes are divided into sixteen “selected” and forty-five “non-selected” modes. These non-MPM modes are coded using fixed length coding. This research focusses on finding more efficient …

Stretchable Methyl Ammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite Solar Cells For Photovoltaic And Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting, William Tait May 2018

Stretchable Methyl Ammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite Solar Cells For Photovoltaic And Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting, William Tait

University Scholar Projects

The goal of this work was to fabricate an inverse planar perovskite solar cell (PSC) that was stretchable in one dimension and completely solution-processible. Perovskites are a material that have attracted much attention in recent years due to their appealing characteristics, such as being photovoltaic and piezoelectric. PSCs have been the focus of many studies in the solar cell area, as they are solution-processible and have shown high efficiencies relative to the amount of time they have been studied. Fabricating a PSC on a stretchable substrate would be beneficial, as a bendable, stretchable PSC would likely have more applications than …

Pattern recognition and machine learning fields have revolutionized countless industries and applications from biometric security to modern industrial assembly lines. The fields continue to accelerate as faster, more efficient processing hardware becomes commercially available. Despite the accelerated growth of the pattern recognition and machine learning fields, computers still are unable to learn, reason, and perform rudimentary tasks that humans and animals find routine. Animals are able to move fluidly, understand their environment, and maximize their chances of survival through adaptation - animals demonstrate intelligence. A primary argument in this thesis that we have not yet achieved a level of intelligence …

Stealth Transmission In Free Space Optical Communication Systems Using Amplified Spontaneous Emission Noise, Youness Ergaibi May 2018

Stealth Transmission In Free Space Optical Communication Systems Using Amplified Spontaneous Emission Noise, Youness Ergaibi

Theses and Dissertations

One of the challenging real-world problems in the communication network is to secure the communication system that deals with a large data. Perhaps even a more challenging version of this scenario is when the channel that transmits the information is a wireless media. This thesis introduces a steganography technique to secure the physical layer of the communication system. It enhances the benefits by using optical communication rather than radio frequency (RF) communication, especially in terms of transmitting a large scale of data. This thesis demonstrates that we can transmit secure large information in free space (air) using steganography mechanism and …

Two-Phase Flow Regime Map For Large Diameter Pipes And High-Velocity Flows, Matheus Sigaki Capovilla May 2018

Two-Phase Flow Regime Map For Large Diameter Pipes And High-Velocity Flows, Matheus Sigaki Capovilla

LSU Master's Theses

Worst-case-discharge (WCD) calculations are a pre-requisite for any new well to be drilled in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Models that were mostly developed for production rates prediction are currently used to calculate the WCD rate. These models were mostly developed for pipe diameters and flow velocities much smaller than those expected during WCD events. Therefore, these models may be miscalculating WCD rates.

This study aims at analyzing one of possible sources of errors in these models: the flow regime maps. The influence of diameter change on flow regimes is discussed. A thorough literature review is carried out for different …

The Fabrication Of High-Aspect Ratio Gratings For Talbot Interferometer With Medical Imaging Application., Vikaram Singh May 2018

The Fabrication Of High-Aspect Ratio Gratings For Talbot Interferometer With Medical Imaging Application., Vikaram Singh

LSU Master's Theses

X-ray Phase contrast-based Talbot interferometer creates high contrast between weak and strong absorbing materials, which makes it effective in imaging soft tissues. However, its performance is bounded by the aspect-ratio, features and symmetry of its gratings. For 40 KeV energy X-rays, the analyzer grating thickness should be 100 µm or more to achieve > 90% absorption in order to obtain high contrast images. Moreover, the smaller period in grating is desired for higher resolution. Therefore, researchers are exploring various fabrication techniques to achieve greater aspect-ratio gratings. Utilizing modern LIGA techniques, the aspect-ratio of gratings can be improved with a simplified …

Perovskite Solar Cells Fabricated Via Scalable Dip Coating Methods, Joseph F. Iannello May 2018

Perovskite Solar Cells Fabricated Via Scalable Dip Coating Methods, Joseph F. Iannello

Theses and Dissertations

Perovskite solar cells present the possibility for less expensive electricity generation, through the use of low cost materials and fabrication methods relative to current silicon-based technology. Many current methods of fabricating thin film perovskite solar cells focus on spin-coating, which inherently lacks scalability due to particle conglomeration, poor uniformity over a larger area, and safety concerns. Dip-coating, an alternative to spin-coating, which is explored here addresses these issues which limit scalability. Each individual layer can be separately synthesized, deposited, and characterized, which leads towards scalability. Choosing only the best results from each independent layer allowed progress to the creation of …

The Effect Of Cellulose Nanocrystals On Latex And Adhesive Properties In Emulsion- Based Polymer Nanocomposites, Marc A. Dubé, Emily D. Cranston, Carole Fraschini, Richard Berry May 2018

The Effect Of Cellulose Nanocrystals On Latex And Adhesive Properties In Emulsion- Based Polymer Nanocomposites, Marc A. Dubé, Emily D. Cranston, Carole Fraschini, Richard Berry

Polymer Reaction Engineering X (PRE 10) (2018)

Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) adhere quickly and firmly to surfaces with the application of light pressure, and can be removed without leaving a residue. Their mechanical performance is measured by tack, peel strength and shear strength. A balanced combination between the three mechanical performance measurements depends on the specific end-use application and is challenging to achieve. This is particularly so when replacing solvent-based technologies with more sustainable, water-based (i.e., emulsion polymerization) technologies. PSAs synthesized using emulsion polymerization tend to have a lower shear strength due to poor gel network formation. As a result, conventional emulsion-based PSAs suffer from the inability …

Graphene plasmonics have attracted significant attention in the past few years due to the remarkable optical and electrical properties of graphene. A highly effective method based on surface integral equations (SIE) in the frequency domain is proposed to describe both linear and nonlinear effects of graphene efficiently and accurately. Graphene, a centrosymmet-ric material, can possess second harmonic generation (SHG) when the conductivity is nonlocal. In this work, the fundamental harmonic (FH) of a graphene wrapped particle is studied as the first benchmark by introducing a conducting surface in SIE. Then it is modified to analyze a graphene-based patch antenna in …

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a study on the data measurements that the Hokuyo UST-20LX Laser Rangefinder produces, which compiles into an overall characterization of the LiDAR sensor relative to indoor environments. The range measurements, beam divergence, angular resolution, error effect due to some common painted and wooden surfaces, and the error due to target surface orientation are analyzed. It was shown that using a statistical average of sensor measurements provides a more accurate range measurement. It was also shown that the major source of errors for the Hokuyo UST-20LX sensor was caused by something that will be referred to as “mixed …

The goal of this project is to create a time and cost-effective solution for THz beam profiling.

The knife edge method of beam characterization is a technique to verify the intensity profile of a beam involving traveling a blade orthogonal to the beam path and measuring transmission in successive steps. We use a vector network analyzer (VNA) to measure S21 transmission from a THz source. Manual implementation of this method was time-consuming and inefficient.

Project hardware includes an Arduino, a motor shield, and a ball screw linear rail with stepper motor actuator. Software was created in LabView and data is …

Binder Free Graphene Hybridized Fe3o4 Nanoparticles For Supercapacitor Applications, Nathan D. Jansen May 2018

Binder Free Graphene Hybridized Fe3o4 Nanoparticles For Supercapacitor Applications, Nathan D. Jansen

Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

In a world with increasing energy demands, the need for safe and mobile energy storage grows. There are a number of renewable energy sources that can be harvested, however peak demand and peak production times tend to not overlap. As the capabilities of collecting the energy grows so does the need to store the energy for later consumption. The two promising methods of storing energy are batteries or supercapacitors. Both technologies employ an electrode consisting of an active material bound to a current collector. This material participates in a redox reaction, storing charge electrochemically to later be used as energy, …

M. F. El-Kady and R. B. Kaner, “Scalable fabrication of high-power graphene micro-supercapacitors for flexible and on-chip energy storage,” Nature Communications, vol. 4, p. 1475, Feb. 2013.

Supercapacitors are electrical components that have higher energy density than regular capacitors. Currently, they are large and bulky which makes it hard to be implemented into smaller electronic devices or on-chip. In Scalable Fabrication of High-power Graphene Micro-supercapacitors for Flexible and On-chip Energy Storage, El-Kady and Kaner developed an inexpensive and reliable method for scaling down supercapacitors to be approximately 7.53 x 5.35 mm. To make the laser-scribed graphene (LSG) micro-supercapacitors, an aqueous …

Combining Algorithms For More General Ai, Mark Robert Musil May 2018

Combining Algorithms For More General Ai, Mark Robert Musil

Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

Two decades since the first convolutional neural network was introduced the AI sub-domains of classification, regression and prediction still rely heavily on a few ML architectures despite their flaws of being hungry for data, time, and high-end hardware while still lacking generality. In order to achieve more general intelligence that can perform one-shot learning, create internal representations, and recognize subtle patterns it is necessary to look for new ML system frameworks. Research on the interface between neuroscience and computational statistics/machine learning has suggested that combined algorithms may increase AI robustness in the same way that separate brain regions specialize. In …

Recent Developments In Tough Hydrogels For Biomedical Applications, Yuan Liu, Weilue He, Zhongtian Zhang, Bruce P. Lee

Department of Biomedical Engineering Publications

A hydrogel is a three-dimensional polymer network with high water content and has been attractive for many biomedical applications due to its excellent biocompatibility. However, classic hydrogels are mechanically weak and unsuitable for most physiological load-bearing situations. Thus, the development of tough hydrogels used in the biomedical field becomes critical. This work reviews various strategies to fabricate tough hydrogels with the introduction of non-covalent bonds and the construction of stretchable polymer networks and interpenetrated networks, such as the so-called double-network hydrogel. Additionally, the design of tough hydrogels for tissue adhesive, tissue engineering, and soft actuators is reviewed.
