Holographic Micro-Simulations To Enhance Aviation Training With Mixed Reality, Lori Brown Fraes, Msc, Hfavn Aug 2018

Holographic Micro-Simulations To Enhance Aviation Training With Mixed Reality, Lori Brown Fraes, Msc, Hfavn

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Mixed reality technologies present a new medium, a new paradigm of augmented reality, where for the first time we have the ability to take the analog world and superimpose digital training artifacts and create a ‘mixed reality’ to enhance aviation training. Digital computing headsets such as Microsoft HoloLens are intuitive and offer a natural means of interaction with no computer, wire or touch-screen. This approach has several practical advantages to overlay holographic elements onto real-world crew environments which makes holographic micro-simulations particularly suited to aviation training and education. Unlike virtual reality—the user is not isolated from their surroundings. MR allows …

Aging Response And Precipitation Behavior After 5% Pre-Deformation Of An Al-Mg-Si-Cu Alloy, Shuoxun Jin, Tungwai Ngai, Liejun Li, Shian Jia, Tongguang Zhai, Dongjie Ke

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, Al-1.00 Mg-0.65 Si-0.24 Cu alloy was solution heat-treated, water-quenched, and then pre-deformed for 5% before aging. The peak hardness and yield strength of the pre-deformed sample with subsequent artificial aging were similar to that of a T6 condition sample. It was also found that the pre-deformation treatment could inhibit the negative influence of natural aging to some degree. After seven days of natural aging, the pre-deformed sample obtained better peak hardness and yield strength upon artificial aging than the sample without pre-deformation. In addition, the pre-deformation treatment could reduce 50% of the artificial aging time to reach …

Applications Of Computational Models On Studying Particulate Systems, Jielin Yu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Particulate systems have been widely studied because of its various phenomena and tight relationship with industry applications. In this dissertation, two types of computational models have been adopted to study two problems with different particulate systems: granular self-organization inside a cylinder driven by an orbital-shaker and the optimal design of bypass line for an industrial-scale 8‑leg polyolefin loop reactor.

In the first study, behavior of both single particle and multiple particles in a rotating cylinder has been modeled by discrete element method (DEM) to understand the mechanism of granular self-organization. Sets of studies have then been performed to study the …

Kinetic Study Of Hydrolysis Of Ethyl Acetate Using Caustic Soda, Hany A. Elazab Dr Aug 2018

Kinetic Study Of Hydrolysis Of Ethyl Acetate Using Caustic Soda, Hany A. Elazab Dr

Chemical Engineering

We report here, the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate by using caustic soda which is followed by means of conductance measurements which is widely used in chemical industry. The main aim of this research is to study the parameters of production of ethyl acetate by chemical reaction kinetics using an anion ion-exchange acting as a catalyst and acid-base titrations. The reaction of ethyl acetate and sodium hy-droxide (caustic-soda) is done in a plug-flow reactor (steady-state tubular reactor) under the effect of different parameters including tem-perature, concentration and flow-rate, which allows the determination of activation energy and rate constants, due to large …

Schlieren Visualization Of Shaping Air During Operation Of An Electrostatic Rotary Bell Sprayer: Impact Of Shaping Air On Droplet Atomization And Transport, Adnan Darwish Ahmad, Ahmad M. Abubaker, Ahmad A. Salaimeh, Nelson K. Akafuah

Institute of Research for Technology Development Faculty Publications

Electrostatic rotary bell sprayers (ERBSs) are widely used in the automotive industry. In ERBS, atomization is facilitated using centrifugal forces which disintegrate the paint film inside the cup into droplets at the cup edge. The droplets are then transported by the flow of a shaping air (SA) and electrostatic forces to a target surface; the characteristics of these droplets dramatically influence the quality of a painted surface and the painting transfer efficiency. In the current paper, a novel Schlieren-based visualization of the shaping air in the absence of paint droplets was performed during a qualitative investigation to delineate shaping air …

Groundwater Flow And Exchange Across The Land Surface Explain Carbon Export Patterns In Continuous Permafrost Watersheds, Bethany T. Neilson, M. Bayani Cardenas, Michael T. O'Connor, Mitchell T. Rasmussen, Tyler V. King, George W. Kling

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Groundwater flow regimes in the seasonally thawed soils in areas of continuous permafrost are relatively unknown despite their potential role in delivering water, carbon, and nutrients to streams. Using numerical groundwater flow models informed by observations from a headwater catchment in arctic Alaska, United States, we identify several mechanisms that result in substantial surface‐subsurface water exchanges across the land surface during downslope transport and create a primary control on dissolved organic carbon loading to streams and rivers. The models indicate that surface water flowing downslope has a substantial groundwater component due to rapid surface‐subsurface exchanges across a range of hydrologic …

Thermal Vibration Contribution To Continuum Stress In The Elastic Regime, Ranganathan Parthasarathy Aug 2018

Thermal Vibration Contribution To Continuum Stress In The Elastic Regime, Ranganathan Parthasarathy

Civil and Architectural Engineering Faculty Research

Homogeneous deformation of an ordered crystalline solid at finite temperature can cause non-affine transformation of atomic trajectories. In such a case, continuum measures based on affine transformation of trajectories are insufficient to ensure energetic equivalence between the atomic and continuum scales. We use molecular dynamics simulation of fcc aluminum in NVT ensembles to demonstrate that the second moments of atomic positions about equilibrium show increasing deviation from affine behavior with strain and temperature. While the Cauchy-Born rule enforces affine deformation of the crystal in the static sense, second moments have been used to quantify non-affinity in thermal vibrations due to …

Webinar: Meeting & Exceeding Mobility User Expectations With Real-Time Transit Information, Sean J. Barbeau, Derek Fretheim

TREC Webinar Series

Every day transit riders ask the same question: when’s the next one coming? To answer this question, transit agencies are transitioning to providing real-time transit information through smartphones or displayed at transit stops.

The proliferation of transit planning and real time arrival tools that have hit the market over the past decade is staggering. Yet with transit ridership on the decline, agencies can’t afford to ignore the importance of providing accurate, real time information to their customers. Real-time transit information improves the reliability and efficiency of passenger travel, but barriers have prevented some transit agencies from adopting the GTFSrealtime v1.0 …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research

The coupling of light with low-frequency functionalities of dielectrics and liquid crystals and an ability to turn “on” and “off” the pyro-, piezo-, or ferro- electric properties of materials on demand by optical means leads to fascinating science and device applications. Moreover, to achieve all-optical control in nano-circuits, the coupling of the light with mechanical degrees of freedom is highly desirable and has been elusive until recently. In this work, we report on the light intensity-induced structural phase transitions in graphene oxide doped piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film observed by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Increasing the laser power results in a steady …

Preparation Of Insulating Material Based On Rice Straw And Inexpensive Polymers For Different Roofs, Fatma Zakaria, M. A. Radwan, M. A. Sadek, Hany A. Elazab Dr

Chemical Engineering

Fossil fuel saving is part of the 21th century goal. One of the largest sectors that consumes energy is the building sector since it consumes 40% of the total energy in Europe through heating and cooling. Thus, the need of minimizing the energy consumption played an im-portant role in the development of building insulation materials. Selection of a proper material for building insulation differs according to the building surrounding climate and the properties required in the material. Building climate determines the insulating material location whether its internal or external while properties can differ ac-cording to many parameters that affect the …

Stream Centric Methods For Determining Groundwater Contributions In Karst Mountain Watersheds, Bethany T. Neilson, Hyrum Tennant, Trinity L. Stout, Matthew P. Miller, Rachel S. Gabor, Yusuf Jameel, Mallory Millington, Andrew Gelderloos, Gabriel J. Bowen, Paul D. Brooks

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Climate change influences on mountain hydrology are uncertain but likely to be mediated by variability in subsurface hydrologic residence times and flow paths. The heterogeneity of karst aquifers adds complexity in assessing the resiliency of these water sources to perturbation, suggesting a clear need to quantify contributions from and losses to these aquifers. Here we develop a stream centric method that combines mass and flow balances to quantify net and gross gains and losses at different spatial scales. We then extend these methods to differentiate between karst conduit and matrix contributions from the aquifer. In the Logan River watershed in …

Thermal insulation is the ability of the material to prevent or reduce the heat transfer through the insulating material or between thermally contacted objectives. The increasing of the greenhouse effect leads to a continuous rising of the temperature especially in the summer, thus, there is a continuous research that aims to find more effective and environmental friendly insulation materials. Nowadays, a great number of proportions from polyurethane foam are produced every year in order to be used as an insulating material. Polyurethane foam shows an effective heat insulation results, but the price of the polyurethane is getting more expensive each …

Indirect Imaging Using Heterodyne Remote Digital Holography, Muralidhar Madabhushi Balaji Aug 2018

Indirect Imaging Using Heterodyne Remote Digital Holography, Muralidhar Madabhushi Balaji

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Conventional line-of-sight imaging techniques rely on detecting light paths bouncing from the object and reaching directly to the detector. Absence of any such direct light paths from object to detector results in a failure to recover any useful information using conventional techniques. The absence of direct light paths from object to detector can be observed in several real-world scenarios such as looking around a corner, imaging through turbid media, imaging through tissue etc.

The focus of this thesis is pertaining to the problem of looking around corners (or) imaging object hidden from line of sight at macroscopic scales. This thesis …

Node-Based Resilience Measure Clustering With Applications To Noisy And Overlapping Communities In Complex Networks, John Matta, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi, Jeffrey Borwey, Koushik Sinha, Donald C. Wunsch, Gunes Ercal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper examines a schema for graph-theoretic clustering using node-based resilience measures. Node-based resilience measures optimize an objective based on a critical set of nodes whose removal causes some severity of disconnection in the network. Beyond presenting a general framework for the usage of node-based resilience measures for variations of clustering problems, we experimentally validate the usefulness of such methods in accomplishing the following: (i) clustering a graph in one step without knowing the number of clusters a priori; (ii) removing noise from noisy data; and (iii) detecting overlapping communities. We demonstrate that this clustering schema can be applied successfully …
