An Improved 3d Complex-Envelope Four-Stage Adi-Fdtd Using The Fundamental Scheme, Qi Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three corresponding reference methods are developed. The CE explicit FDTD method is used to solve the problem with a point source and perfect electric conductor (PEC) boundaries. The problem with a point source and absorbing boundary conditions (ABC) is solved by the 3D free-space Green's function in the frequency domain, and then transformed to the time domain using the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). For the problem with a plane wave and ABC, the frequency-domain solution is obtained using the volume integral equations and method of moments (VIE-MOM), and is then transformed into the time-domain solution using the IFFT. Comparison …

Damage Detection Using Destructive Testing Of A Reinforced Concrete Slab, Michael Edward Daves Jan 2019

Damage Detection Using Destructive Testing Of A Reinforced Concrete Slab, Michael Edward Daves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual inspection is one of the primary tools for evaluating the health of bridges as more reach or exceed their intended lifespan. Bridge deterioration must be monitored to ensure continued safety, so owners need maintenance reports to decide on corrective actions. Strategic repair can offer asset managers the benefit of saving money and time; thus, knowing where to locate and what type of repairs can be challenging when relying on visual techniques alone. A tool designed to aid bridge inspectors is the SHE^tm program, which quantitatively measures damage location and severity for any set of time data.

Monitoring Cerebral Functional Response Using Scmos-Based High Density Near Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging, Dharminder Singh Langri

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Neurovascular coupling is an important concept that indicates the direct link between neuronal electrical firing with the vascular hemodynamic changes. Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) can measure changes in cerebral vascular parameters of oxy-hemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin concentrations and thus can provide neuronal activity through neurovascular coupling. Currently many commercial fNIRS devices are available, but they are limited by the number of channels (usually having only 8 detectors), which can limit the sensitivity, contrast, and resolution of imaging. High-density imaging can improve sensitivity, contrast, and resolution by providing many measurements and averaging the signals originating from the target cerebral focus area …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Nonlinear Optical Ceramics For Random Quasi-Phase-Matching, Xuan Chen Jan 2019

Fabrication And Characterization Of Nonlinear Optical Ceramics For Random Quasi-Phase-Matching, Xuan Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of technologies rely on the conversion of short laser pulses from one spectral domain to another. Efficient frequency conversion is currently obtained in ordered nonlinear optical materials and requires a periodic spatial modulation of their nonlinear coefficient which results in a narrow bandwidth. One can trade off efficiency for more spectral bandwidth by relaxing the strict phase-matching conditions and achieve nonlinear interaction in carefully engineered disordered crystalline aggregates, in a so-called random quasi-phase-matching (rQPM) process. In this dissertation, we examine appropriate fabrication pathways for (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 (PMN-PT) and ZnSe transparent ceramics for applications in the mid-IR. The main challenge …

Mode Coupling In Space-Division Multiplexed Systems, Huiyuan Liu Jan 2019

Mode Coupling In Space-Division Multiplexed Systems, Huiyuan Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Even though fiber-optic communication systems have been engineered to nearly approach the Shannon capacity limit, they still cannot meet the exponentially-growing bandwidth demand of the Internet. Space-division multiplexing (SDM) has attracted considerable attention in recent years due to its potential to address this capacity crunch. In SDM, the transmission channels support more than one spatial mode, each of which can provide the same capacity as a single-mode fiber. To make SDM practical, crosstalk among modes must be effectively managed. This dissertation presents three techniques for crosstalk management for SDM. In some cases such as intra-datacenter interconnects, even though mode crosstalk …

A Network Agent-Based Model Of Ethnocentrism And Intergroup Cooperation, Carlos M. Lemos, Ross J. Gore, Laurence Lessard-Phillips, F. Leron Shults

VMASC Publications

We present a network agent-based model of ethnocentrism and intergroup cooperation in which agents from two groups (majority and minority) change their communality (feeling of group solidarity), cooperation strategy and social ties, depending on a barrier of “likeness” (affinity). Our purpose was to study the model’s capability for describing how the mechanisms of preexisting markers (or “tags”) that can work as cues for inducing in-group bias, imitation, and reaction to non-cooperating agents, lead to ethnocentrism or intergroup cooperation and influence the formation of the network of mixed ties between agents of different groups. We explored the model’s behavior via four …

Extraction Rate In Vapor Assisted Extraction Of Heavy Oil (Vapex), Vijitha Mohan, Parthasakha Neogi Jan 2019

Extraction Rate In Vapor Assisted Extraction Of Heavy Oil (Vapex), Vijitha Mohan, Parthasakha Neogi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heavy oil recovery requires either heat (SAGD) or a solvent (VAPEX) to reduce its high viscosity first and then the less viscous oil can be recovered. We show here that the existing data, on the rate of oil recovered in VAPEX process in sand packs show a square root dependence on the height of pay zone, following expectation. This dependence had remained uncertain and is of importance in oil field operations. We have used dimensional analysis and inverse viscosity-diffusivity dependence to obtain an expression for the rate that agrees well with the available sand pack data. The dimensional analysis overcomes …
