More areas across the globe are becoming affected by water stress or water scarcity. The decrease in available freshwater due to overconsumption reveals the direct need to consider other sources for necessities such as drinking water or food production. Agricultural irrigation uses 70% of the world’s freshwater, making the focus on safe and reliable reclaimed water for agricultural reuse imperative. However, contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), such as antibiotics and their resulting antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), can spread and affect human health if reclaimed water is not treated to the proper level. Antibiotics are widely used in human medicine and …

Performance Evaluation Of Kytc Bridge Deck Overlays Used For Maintenance Activities, Sudhir Palle, Christopher Goff
Performance Evaluation Of Kytc Bridge Deck Overlays Used For Maintenance Activities, Sudhir Palle, Christopher Goff
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
State departments of transportation use bridge deck overlay systems to prolong bridge deck service lives. Consisting of a thin layer of material applied to a concrete bridge deck surface, overlays form a protective barrier that improves ride quality, protects embedded reinforcement from harsh environmental conditions, enhances structure durability, and improves deck drainage. Over the past 20 years, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has made significant investments in overlays, rehabilitating nearly 5,000 bridge decks with them — roughly 1/3 of all bridges statewide. Given the significant investment in overlays, and the fact they degrade over time — eventually re-exposing bridge …

Nickel-based superalloy, particularly Inconel 718, is a promising candidate in advanced structural and high-temperature applications, including turbine blades, combustors, and turbochargers. However, high-efficiency energy systems such as jet engines and land-based gas turbines demand increasingly high strength for advanced structural applications. Therefore, significant efforts are underway to enhance the strength of these materials. Reinforcement of graphene nanoplatelet (GNP), owing to its exceptional mechanical strength, lightweight, high aspect ratio, and high level of coherency with metal matrix, has been proposed as an effective way of incorporating high strength into the existing Inconel 718. In addition, the spark plasma-assisted heating process is …

High-valent iron-oxo complexes show promise as green oxidants for water remediation but suffer from critical limitations in stability and pH adaptability. Herein, we report a facile method to synthesize amorphous SiO2-stabilized high-valent iron-oxo complexes via Na+ diffusion activation of iron/silicon-rich copper smelting slag. In the complex, the synergistic coexistence of two distinct silica‑oxygen tetrahedral configurations-basic Na2SiO3 and acidic SiO2 oxides establishes a self-regulating pH buffering system that stabilizes solution neutrality. This unique structural design ensures sustained oxidative activity of the complex, representing a significant advancement over conventional silica-supported catalysts due to its intrinsic acid-base …

Numerous in-service steel H-piles, a common structural element in the bridge industry, suffer severe corrosion. One of the adopted solutions is to use concrete jackets to encase the corroded sections. Therefore, interfacial shear strength between the uncorroded section and the jacket is crucial. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the interfacial shear stresses of 18 full-scale H-piles encased in concrete jackets and subjected to push-out static testing. The concrete jackets are confined using different carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) confinement ratios. Different cross-sectional areas and distributions of shear studs are investigated. The average and maximum bond stresses are evaluated and …

Price Adjustment Clauses: Enhanced Price Volatility Forecasting For Construction Materials, Ahmed Shiha, Mariam Elazhary, Islam H. El-Adaway
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Price adjustment clauses (PACs) are used by state departments of transportation (DOTs) to share the risk of material price fluctuations. Existing models that depict the price fluctuations of materials forecast a mean within a horizon while relying on the assumption of a constant volatility throughout that horizon. However, none of them examine whether the prices of construction material exhibit similar volatility following a sudden price surge or a price drop. The prospect of PACs and their associated trigger values is hindered in the absence of empirical assessments of their capacity to capture the volatilities in material prices. This paper fills …

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the environmentally friendly management and reutilization of electronic waste (e-waste) plastics in flexible pavement construction. The discussion begins with an overview of e-waste management challenges and outlines key recycling approaches for converting plastic waste into asphalt-compatible materials. This review then discusses the types of e-waste plastics used for asphalt modification, their incorporation methods, and compatibility challenges. Physical and chemical treatment techniques, including the use of free radical initiators, are then explored for improving dispersion and performance. Additionally, in situations where advanced pretreatment methods are not applicable due to cost, safety, or technical constraints, …

Heavy metals are ubiquitous environmental pollutants, contaminating air, soil, and water via the erosion of natural deposits, as well as originating from anthropogenic sources, such as agriculture, industries, transportation, and landfills. The increasing utilization of heavy metals over the years, combined with the persistent nature of metals in the environment poses a direct threat to human and environment health. Although regulatory limits have been established for toxic metals, assessing the associated health risks using real-life exposure scenarios remains challenging. In this review, we summarize the development and use of in vitro models based two- and three-dimensional cell culture systems, focusing …

Antibiotic resistance is a global health threat that is difficult to directly monitor prior to clinical presentation. Wastewater surveillance has emerged as a public health tool that could aid in identifying the community wide circulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), however this is complicated by the potential growth and decay of ARB within the sewer network. Sewer systems have been suggested as a primary place where sub-lethal doses of antibiotics are present with human and environmental adapted bacterial strains, however little is understood about what physiochemical properties might enhance or inhibit ARG propagation. Hence, key …

This study employs ensemble learning algorithms to accurately predict the shear capacity of studs embedded in ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC), a critical aspect of structural engineering. Using a comprehensive data set featuring six UHPC slab features, seven stud features, and one shear pocket feature, 35 ensemble models are developed across five cases and seven algorithms (bagging, random forest, AdaBoost, gradient boosting, XGBoost, CatBoost, and LightGBM). The Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) analysis is conducted on the top-performing models to gain insights into their decision-making mechanisms. Results indicate that transforming UHPC slab geometry parameters into a volume, alongside different diameter ratios, proves …
