Thai Scene Text Recognition, Thananop Kobchaisawat
Thai Scene Text Recognition, Thananop Kobchaisawat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Automatic scene text detection and recognition can benefit a large number of daily life applications such as reading signs and labels, and helping visually impaired persons. Reading scene text images becomes more challenging than reading scanned documents in many aspects due to many factors such as variations of font styles and unpredictable lighting conditions. The problem can be decomposed into two sub-problems: text localization and text recognition. The proposed scene text localization works at the pixel level combined with a new text representation and a fully-convolutional neural network. This method is capable of detecting arbitrary shape texts without language limitations. …

Optimal Planning Of Wind-Based Distributed Generation And Reactive Power Management In A Distribution System, Ovi Eka Putri
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In recent years, the incremental load demand leads to the higher presence of distributed generation (DG) in distribution system. Renewable energy-based DG has been much appreciated due to the techno-eco-environmental benefit. Wind-based DG is one of most promising renewable energy based-DG. However, in the technical aspect, distribution system planning with wind-based DG alone is not fruitful enough due to limited reactive power support. Capacitor bank is one of available devices for reactive power management in distribution system. So, installing wind-based DG and capacitor bank in distribution system is one of alternative solutions to improve electrical power system performance in term …

Machine Vision Integrated Three-Dimensional Printing System, Chaiwuth Sithiwichankit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Three-dimensional printing has been a widespread solution of fabricating geometrical customized products. Any 3D printed product is normally fabricated at a position defined with respect to the coordinate system of the corresponding 3D printer. So, the 3D printing cannot be conveniently implemented in some fabricating applications in which fabricating positions are commonly constrained to some physical references, e.g., architecture construction, surface restoration, food decoration, etc. This research aimed to integrate the 3D printing with machine vision, which is vastly used for guiding robotic systems to operate at desirable positions constrained to physical objects. Hence, the 3D printing can be conveniently …

Analysis Of Construction Fall Protection Guardrails In A Population With Changing Anthropometrics, Connor S. Klinzing
Masters Theses
The construction trade has commonly been cited as one of the most dangerous industries within the United States, with falls from elevation being the most predominate cause for injuries and deaths. The OSHA standards related guardrails has not changed since its implementation in 1970. These standards originally derive from the 1950s, which expect a 160-pound person with 40 pounds of equipment, tools, etc. However, the anthropometries of the common working age citizen has dramatically changed in respects to their weight. This study examines the relationship of the guardrail system to the changing anthropometries to determine if a reform is necessary …

The Transcriptional Response Of Phanerochaete Chrysosporium And Trametes Versicolor To Growth On Stems Of Helianthus Argophyllus (Silverleaf Sunflower), Nadh Hamoud Alsubaie
Masters Theses
Traditional physicochemical and physicomechanical pretreatment technologies have improved the deconstruction of lignocellulose, but often require high energy inputs and added chemical reagents. Recent studies have demonstrated the use of white-rot fungi as alternative biological pretreatment agents that can mitigate these concerns. Although, white-rot fungi have been shown to grow on a variety of non-woody substrates, they have not been explored with respect to sunflower, which has the potential to provide raw materials for both biodiesel and bioethanol. In the present study, Silverleaf sunflower stems (Helianthus argophyllus) were used as substrates for the white-rot fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trametes …
Secure State Estimation In The Presence Of False Information Injection Attacks, Maitham Alsalman
Secure State Estimation In The Presence Of False Information Injection Attacks, Maitham Alsalman
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we first investigate the problem of source location estimation in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) based on quantized data in the presence of false information attacks. Using a Gaussian mixture to model the possible attacks, we develop a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) to estimate the source location. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for this estimation problem is also derived.
Then, the assumption that the fusion center does not have the knowledge of the attack probability and the attack noise power investigated. We assume that the attack probability and power are random variables which follow certain uniform distributions. We …
Capillary Forces In Partially Saturated Thin Fibrous Media, Ali Moghadam
Capillary Forces In Partially Saturated Thin Fibrous Media, Ali Moghadam
Theses and Dissertations
Capillarity is often exploited in self-cleaning, drag reducing and fluid absorption/storage (sanitary products) purposes just to name a few. Formulating the underlying physics of capillarity helps future design and development of optimized structures. This work reports on developing computational models to quantify the capillary pressure and capillary forces on the fibrous surfaces. To this end, the current study utilizes a novel mass-spring-damper approach to incorporate the mechanical properties of the fibers in generating virtual fibrous structures that can best represent fibrous membranes. Such virtual fibrous structures are then subjected to a pressure estimation model, developed for the first time in …
Engineering Magnetic Properties Of Nanoparticles For Biomedical Applications And Magnetic Thin Film Composite Heterostructures For Device Applications., Shivakumar Hunagund
Engineering Magnetic Properties Of Nanoparticles For Biomedical Applications And Magnetic Thin Film Composite Heterostructures For Device Applications., Shivakumar Hunagund
Theses and Dissertations
The motivation of this study is to investigate the size dependent properties of Gadolinium silicide nanoparticles and their potential applications in Biomedicine. We use two approaches in our investigation - size dependence and possible exchange interaction in a core-shell structure. Past results showed Gd5Si4 NPs exhibit significantly reduced echo time compared to superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) when measured in a 7 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. This indicates potential use of Gd5Si4 ferromagnetic nanoparticles as T2 contrast agents for MRI.
Until recently most contrast agents (CA) that are used in Magnetic Resonance …

The Evaluation Of An Android Permission Management System Based On Crowdsourcing, Pulkit Rustgi
Theses and Dissertations
Mobile and web application security, particularly concerning the area of data privacy, has received much attention from the public in recent years. Most applications are installed without disclosing full information to users and clearly stating what they have access to. This often raises concerns when users become aware of unnecessary information being collected or stored. Unfortunately, most users have little to no technical knowledge in regard to what permissions should be granted and can only rely on their intuition and past experiences to make relatively uninformed decisions. DroidNet, a crowdsource based Android recommendation tool and framework, is a proposed avenue …

An interdisciplinary Research-based Education Program for Engaging Plant/Agriculture sciences, Chemical sciences and Engineering students (iREP-4-PACE) is envisioned with the underlying intent to improve Tuskegee University's (TU’s) STEM retention through the introduction of interdisciplinary, guided, inquiry experiments focused on the production of high-value chemicals from plants. At large, chemicals are synthesized from petroleum resources and it is well established that the continued extraction of these resources is detrimental to the environment. On the contrary, synthesizing chemicals from "plant factories" may be a boon to the environment and have a negative carbon …
Wake Vortex Pair Formation As An Analog For Dust Devil And Tornado Genesis, Robert L. Ash
Wake Vortex Pair Formation As An Analog For Dust Devil And Tornado Genesis, Robert L. Ash
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
In 1966, meteorologist R.S. Scorer attempted to explain how large-scale oceanic tropical depressions become hurricanes or typhoons. His model was based on the idea that when these large-scale tropical depression structures begin to rotate, mostly due to Coriolis effects, an annular outer portion of that structure changes suddenly to a potential vortex segment, with the same outer radial limit as the low-pressure structure, but with an inner radius that conserves the overall system angular momentum and kinetic energy. By analogy with the "jump" instability describing sudden buckling of a vertical column, this paper shows that his conjecture merits additional consideration. …

Geothermal Resource Assessment Of Mississippi, Adam Blake Goodwin
Geothermal Resource Assessment Of Mississippi, Adam Blake Goodwin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Geothermal energy is exploited through the process of using hot water or steam extracted from reservoirs of geothermal heat in Earth's crust which is derived from the upward convection and conduction of heat from Earth’s mantle and core. This energy can be harnessed to power geothermal heat pumps, heat water, or to generate electricity. Previous geothermal assessments of Mississippi have been locally focused, either in the southern Mississippi River flood plains or in eastern north central Mississippi at an active lignite coal mine. The focus of this project was to calculate and map heat flow estimates within the entire state …
A Numerical Study Of Granular Dam-Break Flows, Nuttita Pophet
A Numerical Study Of Granular Dam-Break Flows, Nuttita Pophet
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Granular flows are mass movements of mixtures of solid particles and interstitial fluid. Examples include landslides, debris flows and tailings dam-break flows. These types of flows are often catastrophic events, and cover a wide range of phenomena of interest to both scientists and engineers. The mechanical properties of granular materials and the hydraulic behavior of the flows originate from solid and fluid phases, their distribution and interaction. Understanding the behavior of these types of flows and developing reliable predictive models are important.
Mac-Phy Frameworks For Lte And Wifi Networks' Coexistence Over The Unlicensed Band, Hadi Ahmad Kasasbeh
Mac-Phy Frameworks For Lte And Wifi Networks' Coexistence Over The Unlicensed Band, Hadi Ahmad Kasasbeh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main focus of this dissertation is to address these issues and to analyze the interactions between LTE and WiFi coexisting on the unlicensed spectrum. This can be done by providing some improvements in the first two communication layers in both technologies. Regarding the physical (PHY) layer, efficient spectrum sensing and data fusion techniques that consider correlated spectrum sensing readings at the LTE/WiFi users (sensors) are needed. Failure to consider such correlation has been a major shortcoming of the literature. This resulted in poorly performing spectrum sensing systems if such correlation is not considered in correlated-measurements environments.
Dynamic Code Selection Method For Content Transfer In Deep Space Network, Rojina Adhikary
Dynamic Code Selection Method For Content Transfer In Deep Space Network, Rojina Adhikary
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Space communications feature large round-trip time delays (for example, between 6.5 and 44 minutes for Mars to Earth and return, depending on the actual distance between the two planets) and highly variable data error rates, for example, bit error rate (BER) of 10−5 is very comand even higher BERs on the order of 10−1 is observed in the deep- space environment. We develop a new content transfer protocol based on RaptorQ codes and turbo codes together with a real-time channel prediction model to maximize file transfer from space vehicles to the Earth stations. While turbo codes are used to correct …

Enabling Space Time Division Multiple Access In Ietf 6tisch Protocol, Sedat Görmüş, Sercan Külcü
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
IETF 6TiSCH standard aims to create reliable, deterministic, and low-power networks by scheduling bandwidth resources in time and frequency domains. The main emphasis of 6TiSCH protocol is that it creates Internet of things (IoT) networks with a deterministic and controllable delay. However, many of its benefits are tied to the ability of the 6TiSCH scheduler to optimally distribute radio resources among wireless nodes which may not be possible when the number of frequency resources are limited and several other wireless technologies share the same frequency band (e.g., WiFi, Bluetooth and IEEE 802.15.4). Here the integration of a low-complexity directional antenna …

Stegogis: A New Steganography Method Using The Geospatial Domain, Ömer Kurtuldu, Mehmet Demi̇rci̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Geographic data are used on a variety of computing devices for many different applications including navigation, tracking, location planning, and marketing. The prevalence of geographic data makes it possible to envision new useful applications. In this paper, we propose using geographic data as a medium for secret communication, or steganography. We develop a method called StegoGIS for hiding messages in geographic coordinates in the well-known binary of fast-moving objects and transmitting them secretly. We show that discovering this secret communication is practically impossible for third parties. We also show that a large amount of secret data can be transmitted this …

Improving Undersampling-Based Ensemble With Rotation Forest For Imbalanced Problem, Huaping Guo, Xiaoyu Diao, Hongbing Liu
Improving Undersampling-Based Ensemble With Rotation Forest For Imbalanced Problem, Huaping Guo, Xiaoyu Diao, Hongbing Liu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
As one of the most challenging and attractive issues in pattern recognition and machine learning, the imbalanced problem has attracted increasing attention. For two-class data, imbalanced data are characterized by the size of one class (majority class) being much larger than that of the other class (minority class), which makes the constructed models focus more on the majority class and ignore or even misclassify the examples of the minority class. The undersampling-based ensemble, which learns individual classifiers from undersampled balanced data, is an effective method to cope with the class-imbalance data. The problem in this method is that the size …

Researchers have found that a positive correlation exists between information technology (IT) flexibility, IT effectiveness, and strategic alignment in organizations. It has been determined that within inflexible IT environments maintainability is reduced and key business factors become at risk. An IT flexibility measurement matrix was developed to assess IT flexibility however leadership characteristics were not identified for measurement with that model. Determining the leadership characteristics needed for IT flexibility was the purpose of this multiple case study. Leveraging the empowerment, situational leadership, IT-business equilibrium, and complexity change theories, the research questions were focused on the leadership characteristics exhibited by organizational …
