An Intrusion Detection Framework For Energy Constrained Iot Devices, Mohammad Abdellatif, Junaid Arshad, Muhammad Ajmal Azad, Khaled Salah
Electrical Engineering
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) exemplifies IoT with applications in manufacturing, surveillance, automotive, smart buildings, homes and transport. It leverages sensor technology, cutting edge communication and data analytics technologies and the open Internet to consolidate IT and operational technology (OT) aiming to achieve cost and performance benefits. However, the underlying resource constraints and ad hoc nature of such systems have significant implications especially in achieving effective intrusion detection. Consequently, contemporary solutions requiring a stable infrastructure and extensive computational resources are inadequate to fulfill these characteristics of an IIoT system. In this paper, we propose an intrusion detection framework for the …

Performance Analysis Of A Wirelessly Powered Cognitive Radio Communication Network, Mohammad Abdellatif, Haitham Hassan
Electrical Engineering
Over the years, many energy harvesting techniques were proposed in the literature. These techniques are used to solve power supply problems as it has been one of the crucial challenges in wireless communication. With the relatively large numbers of devices that are expected to be deployed starting 2020, it has become harder to implement reasonably priced networks with sufficient power supplying techniques. In this paper, a novel cognitive radio network (CRN) is proposed in which the secondary-users (SUs) have the ability to wirelessly harvest energy from a broadcasted energy signal sent from a central node (CN). Additionally, nodes that might …

Spiking Network Optimized For Word Recognition In Noise Predicts Auditory System Hierarchy, Seyedeh Fatemeh Khatami, Monty Escabí
All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science
The auditory neural code is resilient to acoustic variability and capable of recognizing sounds amongst competing sound sources, yet, the transformations enabling noise robust abilities are largely unknown. We report that a hierarchical spiking neural network (HSNN) optimized to maximize word recognition accuracy in noise and multiple talkers predicts organizational hierarchy of the ascending auditory pathway. Comparisons with data from auditory nerve, midbrain, thalamus and cortex reveals that the optimal HSNN predicts several transformations of the ascending auditory pathway including a sequential loss of temporal resolution and synchronization ability, increasing sparseness, and selectivity. The optimal organizational scheme enhances performance by …

Volumetric Tooth Wear Measurement Of Scraper Conveyor Sprocket Using Shape From Focus-Based Method, Jiancheng Liu, Yinchuan Liu, Hua Ding
All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science
Volumetric tooth wear measurement is important to assess the life of scraper conveyor sprocket. A shape from focus-based method is used to measure scraper conveyor sprocket tooth wear. This method reduces the complexity of the process and improves the accuracy and efficiency of existing methods. A prototype set of sequence images taken by the camera facing the sprocket teeth is collected by controlling the fabricated track movement. In this method, a normal distribution operator image filtering is employed to improve the accuracy of an evaluation function value calculation. In order to detect noisy pixels, a normal operator is used, which …

With the rapid development of the semantic web and the ever-growing size of uncertain data, representing and reasoning uncertain information has become a great challenge for the semantic web application developers. In this paper, we present a novel reasoning framework based on the representation of fuzzy PR-OWL. Firstly, the paper gives an overview of the previous research work on uncertainty knowledge representation and reasoning, incorporates Ontology into the fuzzy Multi Entity Bayesian Networks theory, and introduces fuzzy PR-OWL, an Ontology language based on OWL2. Fuzzy PR-OWL describes fuzzy semantics and uncertain relations and gives grammatical definition and semantic interpretation. Secondly, …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Data centers are becoming the main backbone of and centralized repository for all cloud-accessible services in on-demand cloud computing environments. In particular, virtual data centers (VDCs) facilitate the virtualization of all data center resources such as computing, memory, storage, and networking equipment as a single unit. It is necessary to use the data center efficiently to improve its profitability. The essential factor that significantly influences efficiency is the average number of VDC requests serviced by the infrastructure provider, and the optimal allocation of requests improves the acceptance rate. In existing VDC request embedding algorithms, data center performance factors such as …

Recently, sensor and biosensor applications have become widespread and are now significant tools in the biomedical field and other areas. Since quartz tuning fork (QTF) resonance frequency depends on the mass adsorbed to its prongs, it is generally used to measure minor mass change and detect target analyte in picogram levels. This study is undertaken to design and fabricate a sensor device for the measurement of QTF transducers. When QTF sensor studies were investigated, it was found that explanations on the details of instrumentation part were limited, and in addition, there was no compact commercial products. In this study, a …

In this work, the regulation problem is extended to the field of fractional-order linear systems considering the Caputo fractional derivative. The regulation equations are obtained on the basis of the Francis equations. It is also shown that the linear fractional regulator exists at $t=0$ only if the order of the plant is not greater than the order of the reference system.
Low Level Turbulence Detection For Airports, Anthony O' Connor, Derek Kearney
Low Level Turbulence Detection For Airports, Anthony O' Connor, Derek Kearney
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Abstract—— Low level wind shear and turbulence present a serious safety risk to aircraft during the approach, landing and take-off phases. Despite many advances in on-board and ground based warning systems. Wind shear remains a formidable force that coupled with a microburst can overpower any aircraft. Aviation reports have concluded that pilots need to have improved information in relation to tailwinds, wind shear and wind variations on approach and during the landing phases. Low level wind shear continues to cause disruption, delays and contribute to aircraft crashes. As recently as 2016, two Boeing aircraft crashed while attempting a Go-around …

Aviation Weather Products In General Aviation: Interpretability And Usability Research Trends, Jacqueline Mcsorley, Jayde King, Beth Blickensderfer
General Aviation Weather Display Interpretation
As a result of advances in weather forecasting and technology, today’s General Aviation (GA) pilots have access to a wealth of aviation weather information. During pre-flight planning, GA pilots may access weather radar images, satellite pictures, winds, and forecast maps. During flight, pilots can access in-cockpit weather displays, as well as, handheld portable weather devices. Despite the increasing advancement and accessibility of weather displays, there is limited research addressing the interpretability of both in-cockpit and preflight weather displays. This is particularly concerning considering that preflight planning and poor product interpretability have been cited as possible contributing factors for GA weather …

Stem And Sustainability: Creating Aviation Professional Change Agents, P. Clark, Doreen Mcgunagle, L. Zizka
Stem And Sustainability: Creating Aviation Professional Change Agents, P. Clark, Doreen Mcgunagle, L. Zizka
Publications
With the evolution of the workforce and the growing needs of the aviation industry, a clear need for concrete sustainability initiatives and actions have emerged. Sustainability in this sense becomes a matter of survival. For this reason, in this chapter, we will attempt to close three gaps in current sustainability studies: Theory vs practice, intention vs behavior, and education vs workplace.
Our purpose is to develop a ‘simple’ strategy for integrating all three pillars of sustainability into STEM HE programs that create authentic engagement and real buy-in from the students that are then replicated in the workplace. Based on the …

One of the most important and complex tasks in power engineering is the analysis of power systems under fault conditions. The detection and analysis of these faults are important to guarantee that the dependability and stability of the power system does not decline as a result of a critical event such as a fault. This thesis will conduct research on how a power system under fault conditions behaves and will examine the various scenarios of faults such as three-phase, single line-to-ground, line-to-line, and double line-to-ground faults. A simplified method based on symmetrical components is used to construct the mathematical models …

Influence Of Limit Equilibrium Methods In The Design Of Contiguous Cantilever Sheet Pile Walls Through Reliability-Based Analysis, Alvaro J. Mattos, Juan Camilo Viviescas, Juan Pablo Osorio
Conference papers
In geotechnical engineering the design of bored- pile walls is commonly performed in terms of the embedment length (D) defined according to the limit equilibrium methods (also known as balance methods) formulated by Krey, Blum, Rowe, Hansen and the empirical method of Look in sandy soils. The limit equilibrium methods are calculations associated with the shape of the earth pressures distributions in the shaft, earth pressures theories, geotechnical properties and safety factors, while the empirical criteria establish that the relationship between embedment and the free height (H) is of the order of D/H = 1.5. These design methods are complemented …

Use Of Ponded And Fresh Ashes From China For The Production Of Portland/Calcium Sulfoaluminate Clinkers, Tristana Y. Duvallet, Robert B. Jewell, Anne E. Oberlink, Thomas L. Robl, David Harris
Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive
This article summarizes the use of two fly ashes in the synthesis of Portland/calcium sulfoaluminate (OPC/CSA or A/CSA) clinkers. They are from the Shentou second power plant located in the Shanxi Province and from the Zhungeer power plant located in Inner Mongolia, China. The Zhungeer ash was collected dry, and the Shentou ash is from a pond. Their chemical compositions differ highly, especially the SiO2 and Al2O3 contents. The high contents of silica and alumina make both ashes candidates as a partial or total substitute for bauxite, an expensive source of alumina, in the production of OPC/CSA clinkers. These particular …

The Use Of 3-D Highway Differential Geometry In Crash Prediction Modeling, Kiriakos Amiridis
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
The objective of this research is to evaluate and introduce a new methodology regarding rural highway safety. Current practices rely on crash prediction models that utilize specific explanatory variables, whereas the depository of knowledge for past research is the Highway Safety Manual (HSM). Most of the prediction models in the HSM identify the effect of individual geometric elements on crash occurrence and consider their combination in a multiplicative manner, where each effect is multiplied with others to determine their combined influence. The concepts of 3-dimesnional (3-D) representation of the roadway surface have also been explored in the past aiming to …
Image-Based Roadway Assessment Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Weilian Song
Image-Based Roadway Assessment Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Weilian Song
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Road crashes are one of the main causes of death in the United States. To reduce the number of accidents, roadway assessment programs take a proactive approach, collecting data and identifying high-risk roads before crashes occur. However, the cost of data acquisition and manual annotation has restricted the effect of these programs. In this thesis, we propose methods to automate the task of roadway safety assessment using deep learning. Specifically, we trained convolutional neural networks on publicly available roadway images to predict safety-related metrics: the star rating score and free-flow speed. Inference speeds for our methods are mere milliseconds, enabling …

It includes a detailed site exploration study with in-situ and laboratory testing. The pile load test program included monitoring of a steel H-pile and steel open ended pipe pile during …
Investigation Of Atmospheric Effects On Vapor Intrusion Processes Using Modelling Approaches, Elham Shirazi
Investigation Of Atmospheric Effects On Vapor Intrusion Processes Using Modelling Approaches, Elham Shirazi
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Most people in the United States (US) spend considerable amount of time indoors—about 90% of their time as compared to outdoors, which makes the US population vulnerable to adverse health effects of indoor air contaminants. Volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations are well-known to be higher in indoor air than outdoor air. One source of VOC concentrations in indoor air that has gained considerable attention in public health and environmental regulatory communities is vapor intrusion. Vapor intrusion is the process by which subsurface vapors enter indoor spaces from contaminated soil and groundwater. It has been documented to cause indoor air contamination …
Energy Analysis For Process Parameter Prediction Of Direct Energy Deposition Metal Additive Manufacturing, Daniel John Pulscher
Energy Analysis For Process Parameter Prediction Of Direct Energy Deposition Metal Additive Manufacturing, Daniel John Pulscher
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Metal Additive Manufacturing with the Direct Energy Deposition (DED) process allows for rapid prototyping and low-volume custom manufacturing of complex geometries at a lower cost than traditional manufacturing methods. Direct energy deposition is a complex process having many inter-related process parameters that effect the overall quality and mechanical properties of the build. When new powder feedstocks are used, calibrating these process parameters is typically done empirically in trials that can contain more than a hundred different combinations of parameters. This time-consuming process can be reduced by performing an analytical analysis on how the energy from the laser transfers into the …

The Building Control (Amendment) Regulations of 2014 has sought to leave the days of self-regulation in the past. However, the opt-out clause has created a two-tiered regulatory structure that questions if the regulations are fit for purpose?
This presentation takes an in depth look at the current regulatory structure and questions if there is a requirement for the introduction of a top-down Local Authority lead approach to Building Regulation Control, similar to that currently utilised throughout the UK and Northern Ireland in respect of all building projects?
