Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The study of two- dimensional (2D) materials is a rapidly growing area within nanomaterials research. However, the high equipment costs, which include the processing systems necessary for creating these materials, can be a barrier to entry for some researchers interested in studying these novel materials. Such process systems include those used for chemical vapor deposition, a preferred method for making these materials. To address this challenge, this article presents the first open-source design for an automated chemical vapor deposition system that can be built for less than a third of the cost for a comparable commercial system. The materials and …

1920 - Irrigation Of Twelve Million Acres In The Valley Of California; Robert Bradford Marshall Jan 2019

1920 - Irrigation Of Twelve Million Acres In The Valley Of California; Robert Bradford Marshall

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports

By 1920, California's potential wealth in land reached into billions of dollars; 12,000,000 acres of available agricultural lands remained practically untouched. Marshall proposed a large plan that would make the Valley of California the world's greatest garden. The engineering plans for such a project must be comprehensive, for their execution must not only assure the complete reclamation of 12,000,000 acres of valley lands but must also effectively and forever control the river floods and insure safe and continuous river navigation throughout the year. The hydro-electric current generated along most of the streams would furnish all the power necessary for construction …

1921 - Petroleum Resources Of California, Bulletin 89

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports

By 1921, the increasing demand for petroleum and its products, and the inability of production to keep pace with requirements, for several years, resulted in widespread prospecting throughout the world for possible new oil fields. In California, "wild-cat" wells were being drilled in many localities, some of them in places where even a cursory inspection of the geology would tell the futility of looking for oil. This report aimed to furnish information as to the unfavorable as well as the favorable areas of development of additional petroleum resources in California. The purpose of the report was to briefly take stock …

The Effect Of Cryogenic Thermal Cycling On Aging, Rejuvenation, And Mechanical Properties Of Metallic Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev Jan 2019

The Effect Of Cryogenic Thermal Cycling On Aging, Rejuvenation, And Mechanical Properties Of Metallic Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The structural relaxation, potential energy states, and mechanical properties of a model glass subjected to thermal cycling are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study a non-additive binary mixture which is annealed with different cooling rates from the liquid phase to a low temperature well below the glass transition. The thermal treatment is applied by repeatedly heating and cooling the system at constant pressure, thus temporarily inducing internal stresses upon thermal expansion. We find that poorly annealed glasses are relocated to progressively lower levels of potential energy over consecutive cycles, whereas well annealed glasses can be rejuvenated at sufficiently large …

These detectors would have to withstand the extreme physical conditions experienced by these spreaders during normal operations. Physical shock data from the gable ends of a spreader were recorded during the loading and unloading of a cargo ship by two hard mounted PCB Piezotronics model 340A50 accelerometers and two Lansmont SAVER 9X30 units (with padding). The majority of large shocks were observed in the vertical direction. The Lansmont units recorded mean shocks of 22.215 ± 1.174 and …

A Framework For Evaluating Model-Driven Self-Adaptive Software Systems, Basel Magableh Jan 2019

A Framework For Evaluating Model-Driven Self-Adaptive Software Systems, Basel Magableh

Articles

In the last few years, Model Driven Development (MDD), Component-based Software Development (CBSD), and context-oriented software have become interesting alternatives for the design and construction of self-adaptive software systems. In general, the ultimate goal of these technologies is to be able to reduce development costs and effort, while improving the modularity, flexibility, adaptability, and reliability of software systems. An analysis of these technologies shows them all to include the principle of the separation of concerns, and their further integration is a key factor to obtaining high-quality and self-adaptable software systems. Each technology identifies different concerns and deals with them separately …

A Deep Recurrent Q Network Towards Self-Adapting Distributed Microservices Architecture (In Press), Basel Magableh Jan 2019

A Deep Recurrent Q Network Towards Self-Adapting Distributed Microservices Architecture (In Press), Basel Magableh

Articles

One desired aspect of microservices architecture is the ability to self-adapt its own architecture and behaviour in response to changes in the operational environment. To achieve the desired high levels of self-adaptability, this research implements the distributed microservices architectures model, as informed by the MAPE-K model. The proposed architecture employs a multi adaptation agents supported by a centralised controller, that can observe the environment and execute a suitable adaptation action. The adaptation planning is managed by a deep recurrent Q-network (DRQN). It is argued that such integration between DRQN and MDP agents in a MAPE-K model offers distributed microservice architecture …

Doping Strategies For Small Molecule Organic Hole-Transport Materials: Impacts On Perovskite Solar Cell Performance And Stability, Tracy H. Schloemer, Jeffrey A. Christians, Joseph M. Luther, Alan Sellinger Jan 2019

Doping Strategies For Small Molecule Organic Hole-Transport Materials: Impacts On Perovskite Solar Cell Performance And Stability, Tracy H. Schloemer, Jeffrey A. Christians, Joseph M. Luther, Alan Sellinger

Faculty Publications

Hybrid organic/inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have dramatically changed the landscape of the solar research community over the past decade, but >25 year stability is likely required if they are to make the same impact in commercial photovoltaics and power generation more broadly. While every layer of a PSC has been shown to impact its durability in power output, the hole-transport layer (HTL) is critical for several reasons: (1) it is in direct contact with the perovskite layer, (2) it often contains mobile ions, like Li+ – which in this case are hygroscopic, and (3) it usually has the lowest …

Multivariate Information Fusion With Fast Kernel Learning To Kernel Ridge Regression In Predicting Lncrna-Protein Interactions, Cong Shen, Yijie Ding, Jijun Tang, Fei Guo

Faculty Publications

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) constitute a large class of transcribed RNA molecules. They have a characteristic length of more than 200 nucleotides which do not encode proteins. They play an important role in regulating gene expression by interacting with the homologous RNA-binding proteins. Due to the laborious and time-consuming nature of wet experimental methods, more researchers should pay great attention to computational approaches for the prediction of lncRNA-protein interaction (LPI). An in-depth literature review in the state-of-the-art in silico investigations, leads to the conclusion that there is still room for improving the accuracy and velocity. This paper propose a novel …

Ignition And Extinction Behavior Of Fuels In A Microcombustor, Pawan Sharma Jan 2019

Ignition And Extinction Behavior Of Fuels In A Microcombustor, Pawan Sharma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Conventional fuel testing device-CFR engine requires large quantities of fuels, which makes it unsuitable for research of small samples of fuels. This current study seeks to address this limitation by using an externally heated microcombustor as an alternative fuel testing device. Mainly three combustion behaviors have been observed inside a microcombustor: strong flames at higher flow rates, Flames with Repetitive Extinction and Ignition (FREI) at intermediate flow rates, and weak flames at marginal flow rates. In previous studies, weak combustion behavior has been proven suitable to study fuel properties from small samples of fuels. Microcombustor experiments typically rely on flame …

Reaction Of Titanium Subhydride With Multiple Passivating Gasses, Erik C. Strobert Jr Jan 2019

Reaction Of Titanium Subhydride With Multiple Passivating Gasses, Erik C. Strobert Jr

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Sandia National Laboratories has used substoichiometric titanium hydride as a pyrotechnic fuel for decades. Production of titanium subhydride requires partial dehydriding of titanium hydride powder and subsequent chemical passivation to render the resultant bare titanium surface nonreactive and the powder non-pyrophoric. Novel passivation techniques, using a gas other than air, have been suggested in the past but have never been investigated. This work examines the reaction kinetics of titanium subhydride with three passivating agents, nitrogen, oxygen, and propane. These passivation experiments took place under isothermal conditions (420 ˚C) with varied dehydriding and passivation time periods. It was found that the …
