Refining An Instrument And Studying Elementary Teachers’ Understanding Of The Scope Of Engineering, Jacob Pleasants, Joanne K. Olson
Refining An Instrument And Studying Elementary Teachers’ Understanding Of The Scope Of Engineering, Jacob Pleasants, Joanne K. Olson
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
To effectively incorporate engineering into their instruction, K–12 teachers need sufficient knowledge of the engineering discipline. An important component of teachers’ engineering knowledge is their understanding of the nature of engineering: what engineers do, the epistemological underpinnings of engineering, and the relationships between engineering and other fields of study. In this study, we present a quantitative tool that was developed to assess teachers’ knowledge of a particular nature of engineering dimension: the scope of engineering, which describes the demarcation between engineering and non-engineering. This tool was used to assess the knowledge of teachers and engineering graduate students, before and after …
Could 79 People Solarize The U.S. Electric Grid?, Joshua M. Pearce, Emily Prehoda
Could 79 People Solarize The U.S. Electric Grid?, Joshua M. Pearce, Emily Prehoda
Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications
Although wealth inequality has many established negatives, this study investigates a potential positive, unprecedented wealth concentration makes it possible for solutions to large and seemingly intractable problems to be deployed by convincing a relatively small number of individuals to invest. In order to probe this potential outcome of inequality, this study quantifies the number of people necessary to radically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global climate destabilization from the U.S. electric grid, which is one of the largest sources of emissions. Specifically, this study determined that 1544 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology must be deployed to eliminate …

A Comparison Of X86 Computer Architecture Simulators, Ayaz Akram, Lina Sawalha
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA)
Computer architecture simulators are widely used to evaluate different design options and tradeoffs. This work explores different x86 computer architecture simulators and shows the experimental error of the simulators compared to real hardware runs. We selected gem5, Sniper, MARSSx86 and Zsim, and configured them to model one of the state-of-the- art high-performance processors, Intel’s Haswell microarchitecture. We compared simulators features and statistics, and quantified the experimental error of simulators for single- and multi-core runs compared to a real hardware platform. Finally, we pointed some causes of inaccuracies resulted by the simulators.

The work associated with this project is described in a manuscript entitled "How vision governs the collective behavior of cycling pelotons" by Belden et al., along with an electronic supplementary material document. We investigate properties of densely packed groups of bicycle racers, which are known as cycling pelotons. These pelotons exhibit features of collective animal behavior, including emergent behavior from inter-individual interactions. In this data set, we classify global shapes of the peloton, and identify and track individual cyclists to determine the details of network structure. We also investigate motion waves that propagate through the pelotons.

Seepage-Coupled Finite Element Analysis Of Stress Driven Rock Slope Failures For Bothnatural And Induced Failures, Thomas Becket Anyintuo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Rock slope failures leading to rock falls and rock slides are caused by a multitude of factors, including seismic activity, weathering, frost wedging, groundwater and thermal stressing. Although these causes are generally attributed as separate causes, some of them will often act together to cause rock slope failures. In this work, two of the above factors, seepage of water through cracks and crack propagation due to the after effects of blasting are considered. Their combined impact on the development of rock falls and rock slides is modeled on ANSYS workbench using the Bingham Canyon mine slope failure of 2013 as …
Mechanical Properties Of Michigan Basin's Gypsum Before And After Saturation, Mohammadhossein Sadeghiamirshahidi, Stanley Vitton
Mechanical Properties Of Michigan Basin's Gypsum Before And After Saturation, Mohammadhossein Sadeghiamirshahidi, Stanley Vitton
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The stability analysis of an abandoned underground gypsum mine requires the determination of the mine pillar's strength. This is especially important for flooded abandoned mines where the gypsum pillars become saturated and are subjected to dissolution after flooding. Further, mine pillars are subjected to blast vibrations that generate some level of macro- and micro-fracturing. Testing samples of gypsum must, therefore, simulate these conditions as close as possible. In this research, the strength of gypsum is investigated in an as-received saturated condition using uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) and point load index (PLI) tests. The scale effect was …

A Novel Correlation Model For Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines Operating At High-Interference Flow Regimes, Anurag Rajan, Fernando L. Ponta
A Novel Correlation Model For Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines Operating At High-Interference Flow Regimes, Anurag Rajan, Fernando L. Ponta
Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Publications
Driven by economics-of-scale factors, wind-turbine rotor sizes have increased formidably in recent years. Larger rotors with lighter blades of increased flexibility will experiment substantially higher levels of deformation. Future turbines will also incorporate advanced control strategies to widen the range of wind velocities over which energy is captured. These factors will extend turbine operational regimes, including flow states with high interference factors. In this paper we derive a new empirical relation to both improve and extend the range of Blade Element Momentum (BEM) models, when applied to high interference-factor regimes. In most BEM models, these flow regimes are modeled using …

The Quest For Model Uncertainty Quantification: A Hybrid Ensemble And Variational Data Assimilation Framework, Peyman Abbaszadeh, Hamid Moradkhani, Dacian Daescu
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article presents a novel approach to couple a deterministic four‐dimensional variational (4DVAR) assimilation method with the particle filter (PF) ensemble data assimilation system, to produce a robust approach for dual‐state‐parameter estimation. In our proposed method, the Hybrid Ensemble and Variational Data Assimilation framework for Environmental systems (HEAVEN), we characterize the model structural uncertainty in addition to model parameter and input uncertainties. The sequential PF is formulated within the 4DVAR system to design a computationally efficient feedback mechanism throughout the assimilation period. In this framework, the 4DVAR optimization produces the maximum a posteriori estimate of state variables at the beginning …
Machine Learning, Game Theory Algorithms, And Medium Access Protocols For 5g And Internet-Of-Thing (Iot) Networks, Mohamed Elkourdi
Machine Learning, Game Theory Algorithms, And Medium Access Protocols For 5g And Internet-Of-Thing (Iot) Networks, Mohamed Elkourdi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the first part of this dissertation, a novel medium access protocol for the Internet of Thing (IoT) networks is introduced. The Internet of things (IoT), which is the network of physical devices embedded with sensors, actuators, and connectivity, is being accelerated into the mainstream by the emergence of 5G wireless networking. This work presents an uncoordinated non-orthogonal random-access protocol, which is an enhancement to the recently introduced slotted ALOHA- NOMA (SAN) protocol that provides high throughput, while being matched to the low complexity requirements and the sporadic traffic pattern of IoT devices. Under ideal conditions it has been shown …
Design Of Shape-Morphing Structures Consisting Of Bistable Compliant Mechanisms, Rami Alfattani
Design Of Shape-Morphing Structures Consisting Of Bistable Compliant Mechanisms, Rami Alfattani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents a design concept for shape-morphing structures that have two stable configurations. The design concept defines the methodology of transforming a planar structural shape into spatial structural shape using bistable compliant mechanisms. Bistable complaint mechanisms are used to achieve structural stable configurations. The dissertation incorporating geometrical relationships for the mechanisms that form the primary structure described in step-by-step process. This dissertation implements the design layouts for designer to creating shape-morphing structures including origami. The novel contribution of the work is classified in three models. The first model presents a methodology to induce bistability behavior into an origami reverse …
