Coastal vulnerability has been gaining recognition as a critical issue, especially with the increasing predictions of sea level rise. Susceptibility to extreme events, eutrophication, and shoreline modification has left many coastal regions in a degraded state. Shoreline protection has traditionally taken the form of seawalls and offshore breakwaters which can be detrimental to both the local ecosystems and adjoining shorelines. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the hydrodynamic and bathymetric variation that occurs within Mosquito Lagoon, Florida following living shoreline and oyster reef restorations. The first part of this research presents a new methodology, which enables streets, roads, highways, bridges, and airfields to use an advanced fiber-reinforced concrete material, which can delay or prevent the deterioration of these transportation infrastructure when subjected to traffic and environmental loadings. This research investigates the effects of steel fibers on the concrete breakout of the cast-in-place headed stud anchors in tension. High strength anchors (F1554 G105) is used in this study for varying steel fiber dosage of 0.0%, 0.5% and 1.0% by volume fraction of concrete. The physical properties of steel fiber reinforced concrete were calculated through various test at the Civil Engineering laboratory Building. In total, 9-cylinder specimens of 4” diameter and 8” height, and 9 beam specimens, 6”x6”x20” were made and tested. Vibrational energy harvesters convert kinetic energy from environment to useful electrical energy to power wireless sensor networks. These devices are finding applications in robotics, defense, medical, structural health monitoring, aerospace and wearables. The goal of this dissertation is to improve the design of vibrational electrostatic energy harvesters. Wideband, out-of-plane gap-closing, electret-based electrostatic energy harvesters using nonlinear springs and mechanical stoppers are designed. A unique mechanism is developed to introduce nonlinearity in the force-displacement relationship by varying the spring anchor height relative to the level of the proof-mass in the vertical direction. Shallow slope failures are prevalent within the North Texas region. As highway slopes are underlain with high plastic clayey soils that experience cyclic shrinking and swelling, the soils shear strength generally decreases as the soil softens, making the soil more susceptible to sloughing and landslides. Recent trends in turbomachinery blade technology have led to increased use of monolithically constructed bladed disks (blisks). Although offering a wealth of performance benefits, this construction removes the blade-attachment interface present in the conventional design, thus unintentionally removing a source of friction-based damping needed to counteract large vibrations during resonance passages. This issue is further exacerbated in the presence of blade mistuning that arises from small imperfections from otherwise identical blades and are unavoidable as they originate from manufacturing tolerances and operational wear over the lifespan of the engine. Underground gravel filter basins (UGF basins) are subsurface structures that are used for detention, filtration, and infiltration of stormwater runoff in urbanized areas. The application of these structures is recommended in highly developed urban areas, where land is not available or it is too expensive for surface-level green infrastructures such as stormwater ponds, bio-retention, and infiltration trenches. The Truck Parking Problem occurs when drivers have met the daily driving limit and encounter a decision between driving over time or parking in unauthorized locations. This research applies data analytics to gain further knowledge to characterize the truck parking shortage in Arkansas.
