Predicting Crack Initiation And Early Crack Growth Behavior Of Pure Nickel Using Surface Topography Analysis, Jalal Fathi Sola Aug 2019

Predicting Crack Initiation And Early Crack Growth Behavior Of Pure Nickel Using Surface Topography Analysis, Jalal Fathi Sola

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Fatigue has long been studied as the most critical loading mode for man-made structures. Despite the advances in material behavior characterization and numerical calculation, many structures unexpectedly fail before their designed life. Most of the studies in crack initiation are solely for describing the material and failure behavior and are not capable of predicting the failure before it starts. In addition, most of the fatigue crack growth models are based on the Paris Model with some modifications, which their application is limited to long crack. This implies that finding new methods which can reliably predict material failure is very important. …

A Numerical Study Of Cavitating Flows Based On Plic-Vof Method For Arbitrary Unstructured Meshes, Dezhi Dai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Cavitation appears when local static pressure drops below the water vapor pressure and causes significant impacts on marine propeller blades. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) method, which is also referred to as the Transport Equation-based Model (TEM), has been extensively adopted in the cavitating flow simulations. Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation (PLIC) schemes have been extensively employed in the VOF method for interface capturing in numerical simulations of multiphase flows. Polyhedral unstructured meshes are often adopted due to their geometric flexibility and superiority in gradient calculation. Four analytical interface reconstruction algorithms in the PLIC-VOF method for arbitrary convex polyhedral cells have …

The Effect Of Controlled Nanomaterial Deposition Towards Electrodes For Microbial Fuel Cells And Electrolysis Cells, Bryan Dennis Steinhoff Aug 2019

The Effect Of Controlled Nanomaterial Deposition Towards Electrodes For Microbial Fuel Cells And Electrolysis Cells, Bryan Dennis Steinhoff

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are relatively new energy harvesting technologies that utilize the bacteria in wastewater or other organic-rich aqueous media to produce either electricity or hydrogen gas, respectively. Given that MFCs and MECs are newer technologies, there has been many works over the past two decades that have provided understanding into how modifying electrode surface chemistry can improve these cells. It has been widely known that increasing the surface functional groups of MFC anodes, either chemically or thermally, causes the cell power density to increase dramatically. Since MFCs and MECs use the same anodes, …

Multi-Variable Optimization To Improve Temperature Uniformity In Burn-In Applications Subjected To Significant Thermal Shadowing, Ajinkya Suhas Mahajan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Burn-in test typically employs voltage and/or temperature to accelerate the appearance of latent reliability defects in semiconductor devices. As a result, burn-in becomes a critical step in the parts screening process and is the primary technique to eliminate defective parts in the early phase of the product life. Thermal control in burn-in processes is generally achieved by either active or passive thermal controlling. In an active thermal control, each device has an individual temperature monitoring system to maintain a specific temperature in which the cooling/heating of each socket is controlled by an individual fan or heater. Whereas in passive thermal …

An Exploratory Study On Continuous Wave Laser And High-Speed Camera Combination In Planar Particle Image Velocimetry For Low Speed Flows, Bunyamin Gencler

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

This study investigates the feasibility of using continuous wave lasers and high-speed CMOS cameras together in 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) which is a widely-used non-intrusive method in experimental aerodynamics. In order to validate the setup, laminar and turbulent boundary layers over a flat plate with elliptical leading edge are examined in a low-speed wind tunnel. Before the experiments, the suitability of the elliptical-nose flat plate is determined (i.e. pressure gradient over the surface and separation), and the free-stream conditions (flow velocity and test section turbulence) are measured. To strengthen the validation of the setup, numerical simulations are added to …

Artificial intelligence (AI) has becoming an important area which may significantly impact everyone’s daily life. This means a lot of high-performance chips such as high-performance CPU, GPU, FPGA (Field-programmable gate array), ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) devices may need. The thermal design power (TDP) of these chips are high, and now it is very common to see a processor TDP reaches as high as 300Watts[1]. When these high-power density processors are packaged together, the power density of the servers and compute boxes are significantly high. Traditional air-cooling is approaching its cooling capability limitation, especially when a cluster of racks is …

Molecular Dynamics (Md) Thermal Simulations Of Molecular Bridging Across The Cathode-Separator Interface In Li-Ion Cell, Abhijeet Sundarrao Dhakane

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

While Li-ion cells show outstanding electrochemical performance, their poor thermal transport characteristics results in reduced performance as well as significant safety concerns. The heterogeneous interface between cathode and separator plays a vital role in the dissipation of heat within a Li-ion cell. Previous studies showed that the cathode-separator interfacial thermal resistance contributes around 88% of total thermal resistance within the cell. In this research, thermal conductance across the cathode-separator interface is calculated using molecular dynamics simulations. Thermal transport in a pristine heterogeneous interface as well as interfaces functionalized with monolayers of APTES, nBTMS and MPTMS molecules is studied. The impact …

Ultrasound Switchable Fluorescence Imaging Based On A Time Gated Iccd Camera, Shuai Yu Aug 2019

Ultrasound Switchable Fluorescence Imaging Based On A Time Gated Iccd Camera, Shuai Yu

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Ultrasound switchable fluorescence (USF) imaging has been proposed as a novel imaging modality which provides microscopic fluorescence imaging in centimeter-deep tissue. USF is possible to reveal many interesting phenomena such as microcirculation, tumor angiogenesis, and cancer metastasis and diagnose early-stage cancer. USF adopts a focused ultrasound (FU) to repetitively switch “on” fluorescent agents in tissue, and the USF photons scatter out and are captured by a detector. A USF image provides acoustic resolution and optical sensitivity. In USF, there are two key components: 1) an excellent USF contrast agent; and 2) a sensitive USF imaging system. The major challenge of …

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Despite breakthroughs in the field of neuroimaging, there remain many unanswered questions about brain functions and activities and their underlying physiological processes. In my dissertation research, I examined brain functions while human subjects experienced four vigilance states: (1) resting state with eyes open, (2) resting awake state with eyes closed, (3) sleep stage 1 and (4) sleep stage 2. Simultaneous dual modality measurements using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) were acquired during the aforementioned vigilance states. Specifically, I examined brain processes from two different perspectives: brain hemodynamics (blood flow) and electrophysiology (brain waves). My dissertation had three …

Development And Investigation Of Fluorescence Imaging Probes, Bahar Saremi Aug 2019

Development And Investigation Of Fluorescence Imaging Probes, Bahar Saremi

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Fluorescence imaging has attracted much attention due to high sensitivity, spatial and temporal resolution, and fast acquisition time, for imaging biomolecular processes and for diagnosis of diseases such as cancer in early stages. Fluorescence imaging in centimeter-deep tissue suffers from low spatial resolution because of the strong scattering of light. On the other hand ultrasound imaging benefits from 1000 times less scattering in the tissue and deep penetration. Ultrasound switchable fluorescence imaging is a relatively new imaging modality that combines the sensitivity of optical imaging with the depth of penetration of ultrasound imaging while preserving the resolution by only eliciting …

Earthquakes in the past and in the recent times have demonstrated the extreme vulnerability of the water pipe networks. The impacts of such earthquakes on the water supply network can lead to significant direct and indirect losses. These losses highlight the critical need for seismic rehabilitation of water pipe network. Despite such criticality, water supply network managers are often constrained in what they can do with the limited rehabilitation budget that they have access to. Majority of current models dealing with seismic vulnerability assessment of water pipes do not provide actionable insights to the utility managers for the seismic rehabilitation …

Development Of An In Vitro Tbi Models And Validation Of Nanodelivery For Restoration Of Disrupted Brain Endothelium, Edidiong I. Inyang

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a serious concern among military personnel and their families. Although the mechanisms responsible for disruption to the brain are not well understood, the development of reliable diagnosis along with effective therapeutic treatment is urgently warranted. Recent findings suggest that shockwaves produced by a blast can generate micron-size bubbles that subsequently collapse in the brain tissue. The collapse of microbubbles (referred to as microcavitation) may compromise the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Moreover, addiction to the psycho-stimulant drugs (PSDs), e.g. cocaine and alcohol which are known to cause toxicity due to oxidative stress, can …

Development Of Condition Prediction Models For Sanitary Sewer Pipes, Mohammadreza Malek Mohammadi Aug 2019

Development Of Condition Prediction Models For Sanitary Sewer Pipes, Mohammadreza Malek Mohammadi

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Utility managers and owners have challenges when addressing appropriate intervals for inspection of gravity sanitary sewer pipelines and other underground pipeline systems. Frequent inspection of sewer network is not cost-effective due to large inventory of pipes and high cost of inspections, such as using closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveys. Therefore, it would be more beneficial to first predict critical sewers most likely needing maintenance and then perform inspections to optimize use of their limited budgets and target pipelines most in need of repairs, rehabilitation or renewal. Development of sewer condition prediction models is extremely vital for utilities to evaluate the short-term …

Laboratory Testing And Finite Element Modeling Of Invert Removed Corrugated Metal Culvert Buried Under Shallow Cover, Hiramani Raj Chimauriya

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Ever since their advent in the 1800s, corrugated metal pipes (CMPs) have played a vital role in this nation’s infrastructure. The wide range of options on diameter and span have made these culverts more preferable over traditional concrete culverts. However, compared to concrete culverts, CMPs have a shorter design life and are only expected to last 10 to 30 years even under ideal conditions. Over the course of years, different open-cut and trenchless methods have been used to rehabilitate existing old and damaged culverts. In recent years, trenchless methods like sliplining, CIPP, spray-applied pipe linings, etc. have been gaining popularity …

Simulation Of A Time-Varying Distributed Cathode In A Linear Format Crossed-Field Amplifier, Marcus Pearlman, Jim Browning

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effects of a temporally modulated, distributed cathode in a linear format crossed-field amplifier (CFA) are simulated in VSim and analyzed. A linear format, 150 MHz, low power (100 W), moderate gain (7 dB), meander line CFA is used as the basis for the simulation model. This paper describes simulations with different time-varying distributed cathodes in which electron injection is modulated at the RF frequency both in and out of phase with the RF input. At low RF input power the modulated electron injection dominates the operation. Injecting in phase with the RF input shows gain increases from 23 dB …

The ASCAT SM indicated better performance than other SM products over Australia. To evaluate the applicability and reliability for monitoring agricultural drought, an agricultural drought index, the Soil Water Deficit Index, was estimated from three SM products and compared with three commonly-used drought indices (atmospheric water deficit [AWD], Evaporative Stress Index, and Reconnaissance …

A New Design Methodology Of Reinforced Concrete Squat Shear Walls For Ductile Seismic Behavior And Predictable Shear Strength, Ghassan S. Almasabha Aug 2019

A New Design Methodology Of Reinforced Concrete Squat Shear Walls For Ductile Seismic Behavior And Predictable Shear Strength, Ghassan S. Almasabha

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Reinforced concrete (RC) squat walls (with a height-to-length ratio of 2.0 or less) have high strength and stiffness which makes them a popular seismic force-resistant system for buildings and nuclear power plants. However, extensive studies on squat shear walls showed that squat walls have limited drift ductility because a flexural yielding mechanism is difficult to achieve, thereby undermining the role of squat walls as structural fuse members in earthquake-resisting structures. This research proposes a new design methodology of squat walls for ductile seismic behavior. While ACI 318-19 requires a mesh of steel bars to reinforce squat walls, the proposed design …

Improving Post Processing Of Ensemble Streamflow Forecast For Short-To-Long Ranges: A Multiscale Approach, Babak Alizadeh

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A novel multi-scale post-processor for ensemble streamflow prediction, MS-EnsPost, and a multiscale probability matching (MS-PM) technique for bias correction in streamflow simulation are developed and evaluated. The MS-PM successively applies probability matching (PM) across multiple time scales of aggregation to reduce scale-dependent biases in streamflow simulation. For evaluation of MS-PM, 34 basins in four National Weather Service (NWS) River Forecast Centers (RFC) in the US were used. The results indicate that MS-PM improves over PM for streamflow prediction at a daily time step, and that averaging the empirical cumulative distribution functions to reduce sampling uncertainty marginally improves performance. The performance …

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have found broad civilian applications. However, existing commercial usages are limited to single UAVs. To facilitate commercial multi-UAV applications, robust UAV-to-UAV communication with long-distance and broad-band capabilities is critical. Such a communication architecture should not rely on ground infrastructure support, and hence can be applied whenever needed in scenarios where infrastructures are not available. It is foreseen to have extensive usages in a wide spectrum of commercial UAV applications such as emergency response, remote sensing, and nondestructive health monitoring. A promising solution for such a communication architecture is aerial communication using directional antennas (ACDA). We developed …

Analytical And Numerical Modeling Of Externally Heated Geothermal Bridge Deck, Mandakini Chowdhury Aug 2019

Analytical And Numerical Modeling Of Externally Heated Geothermal Bridge Deck, Mandakini Chowdhury

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Bridge icing is a severe safety concern for travel during winter months in the United States. Ice on bridges form quicker than roads, as the bridge is exposed to wind on all its surfaces. The underlying problem of bridge icing is loss of friction between the vehicle wheel and the pavement surface due to slippery nature of ice. Hence, the solution is to increase the friction between the above-mentioned surfaces. The most commonly adopted solution is application of sand, salt or other granular materials on the roadway. However, due to corrosive nature of the salts, the durability of the infrastructure …
