Robust Coordinated Motion Control Of Free-Floating Space Robot With Flexible-Link And Flexible-Joints, Xiaoyan Yu, Chen Li

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Robust coordinated motion control and vibration hierarchical suppression of a free-floating space robot with one flexible link and two elastic revolute joints was proposed. The dynamical Lagrange equation was established by the momentum conservation. A singularly perturbed model was formulated, which consists of a slow subsystem and two fast subsystems. Based on the singularly perturbed model, a reduced-order controller was proposed, which consists of a robust slow control component and two fast control components. The virtue of this control scheme is that the linear position, linear velocity, linear acceleration of the base needn’t be measured directly. …

An Urban Modelling Framework For Climate Resilience In Low-Resource Neighbourhoods, Ulrike Passe, Michael Dorneich, Caroline Krejci, Diba Malekpour Koupaei, Breanna Marmur, Linda Shenk, Jacklin Stonewall, Janette Thompson, Yuyu Zhou

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Climate predictions indicate a strong likelihood of more frequent, intense heat events. Resource-vulnerable, low-income neighbourhood populations are likely to be strongly impacted by future climate change, especially with respect to an energy burden. In order to identify existing and new vulnerabilities to climate change, local authorities need to understand the dynamics of extreme heat events at the neighbourhood level, particularly to identify those people who are adversely affected. A new comprehensive framework is presented that integrates human and biophysical data: occupancy/behaviour, building energy use, future climate scenarios and near-building microclimate projections. The framework is used to create an urban energy …

Physical Behavior Of Thermally Affected Bronze And Brass, Samiul Kaiser, Mohammad Salim Kaiser

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

The physical behavior of thermally affected cast copper, aluminum bronze and brass has been studied by subjecting to heating isochronally for one hour at a range of 600°C. It shows that solid-solution hardening takes place into the Al added bronze and Zn added brass metal. Due to heating Al forms hard and brittle intermetallic of copper aluminates into the bronze metal which responses some age-hardening effects. The electrical conductivity of the metals increases initially through heat treatment due to stress relieving and finally decreases due to formation of intermetallic precipitates. The color of the heated samples are also studied through …

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

The shell and tube heat exchanger was a tool to exchange the heat energy between fluids with different temperatures that occurred through direct or indirect contact. The energy exchange in fluids could be occurred with the same phase (liquid to liquid or gas to gas) or two fluids with different phase. To date, the process of heat transfer in the industrial field was crucial in machine work. Therefore, there were studies directed to optimize and develop the function and thermal performance of a heat exchanger by adding Baffles to the side of the shell. Vortex flow that occurs with the …

The Effect Of Solution Treatment Temperature And Quenching Media Variation In Heat Treatment Process Cu-Zn-Al Shape Memory Alloys On Shape Memory Effect And Microstructures, Wikan Jatimurti, Monica Gayatri K, Mavindra Ramadhani, Rochman Rochiem

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are metal alloys with a reversible ability to recover their shape at a certain temperature after being deformed. This ability referred to as Shape Memory Effect (SME). The application of SMAs such as Ni-Ti and Cu-Zn-Al alloys usually used on automotive, biomedical, etc. The commonly used SMA is Ni-Ti because of its superior SME properties than Cu-Zn-Al, even though the price is quite higher. The SME of Cu-Zn-Al might be improved by increasing the presence of the martensite phase in its microstructure by heat treatment. The heat treatment process given to Cu-21Zn-5Al alloy is a homogenizing, …

Magnetic Water Treamtment For Scale Prevention On Water Heater Elements, Fatma Al-Sharji Jul 2020

Magnetic Water Treamtment For Scale Prevention On Water Heater Elements, Fatma Al-Sharji

Department of Environmental Engineering: Theses and Other Student Research

Calcium carbonates is one of the main components of scale that is commonly found in industrial equipment such as hot water systems. Scale formation on heater elements may lead to reduce heat efficiency and shorten the heat service life. Ion exchange softened water are used to reduce the scale formation, but excess salt during regeneration discharged to the wastewater stream, limits the reuse of wastewater for industrial purposes. As a result, non-salt alternative devices would provide consumers with the ability to reduce the impacts of ion exchange softened water without creating negative salinity impacts on wastewater stream. Magnetic water treatment …

Biofiltration Of Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted At Ethanol Plants, Mitham Al-Faliti Jul 2020

Biofiltration Of Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted At Ethanol Plants, Mitham Al-Faliti

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Ethanol is a major biofuel source of energy in the U.S. Ethanol production produces several harmful emissions from both fermentation tanks and dryers. CO2 scrubbers control the emissions from the fermentation tanks, while the emissions from the dryers are controller by regenerative thermal oxidizers. These methods are expensive to operate. A potential alternative is bio-trickling filters. Bio-trickling filters are an inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternative. For this study, two parallel bio-trickling filters were operated one at 25°C called the mesophilic bio-trickling filter and one at 60°C called the thermophilic bio-trickling filter. The mesophilic bio-trickling filter simulates emissions from fermentation …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In the field of modeling and simulation, it’s difficult to reuse the models because the models and simulation system are coupled seriously. The Ontology-driven modeling theory is a simulation modeling methodology for model reuse. A new DEVS modeling method was proposed based on this theory. This form of DEVS model was independent of the DEVS simulation environment, which improved the model reusability. A tool was developed to translate the DEVSMO instance to DEVS executable models to verify the …

For most relief, their carrier surface was irregular curved surface, so estimated metric depth should be map to curved surface. The carrier model was put into Riemannian geometry space, parameterizing local region which position and size was assigned using exponential map. Corresponding vertex coordinate …

Signal Denoising Method Based On Atom Curve Fitting Improved Dictionary Learning, Gao Bo, Wang Jun, Gege Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In signal denoising problems, using K-SVD and other classic dictionary learning algorithm can not effectively eliminate the noise impact. The method made some amendments for classical dictionary learning by applying nonlinear least squares curve fitting and particle swarm optimization. K-SVD algorithm was used to train the dictionary. Nonlinear least-squares approach was used to fit every atom in the dictionary. Particle swarm optimization method was used to solve the sparse representation of the signal. The reconstructed signal was obtained. The experimental results show that, the denoising effects of the proposed method apparently has increased compared with K-SVD and RLS-DLA.

Mie scattering theory is often used to calculate the flux of light scattered off of small particles whose diameter is approximately the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of incident light. In many equations for the calculation of this flux, it is assumed that the area of interest is perpendicular to the ray of scattered light. This assumption does not apply to all cases such as low-cost (
