Feasibility Of Geothermal Energy Piles In New Orleans Alluvial Soils, Patrick A. Thurmond Dec 2020

Feasibility Of Geothermal Energy Piles In New Orleans Alluvial Soils, Patrick A. Thurmond

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Geothermal energy piles offer the benefits of modifying existing construction practices to reduce costs associated with heating and cooling. A major obstacle today in effective utilization of these systems is a general lack of site-specific data on the thermal properties of subsoils. To maximize the potential efficiency of these systems, engineers require an understanding of the potential impact of this technology on existing foundation design methodology as well as a means for quantifying potential heat transfer through soil by determination of the soil’s thermal conductivity. This study examines the feasibility of energy piles with a focus on alluvial soils found …

Numerical Investigation On The Effect Of Surface Perturbations On Aerodynamics Of Cambered Airfoils, Ahmed Elbaz Dec 2020

Numerical Investigation On The Effect Of Surface Perturbations On Aerodynamics Of Cambered Airfoils, Ahmed Elbaz

Mechanical Engineering

The issue of the flow separation and the urge to reach higher performance ratings in airfoils can be acquired through the passive surface modification. By altering the shape of the upper surface to have a perturbated shape using a simple sinusoidal wave, the flow characteristics of airfoils can be enhanced to yield higher desired outputs. This study proposes the effect of both the wave amplitude and the number of waves for the perturbated upper surface on the lift and drag characteristics for SG-6040 and SG-6042 airfoils. Perturbating the upper surface of the airfoil can be of a great advantage as …

Monetary Impact Of National Exchange Carrier Association Tariffs On Internet Access Cost In Rural Areas, Tim Obermier, Angela K. Hollman

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This study examines the monetary impact of tariffs on consumer internet access via a digital subscriber line (DSL). Historically, the Communications Act of 1934 mandated that telephony services be provided to everyone, without exclusion. With the rapid emergence of the internet, the Connect America Fund was recently implemented to ensure equal access to both voice and broadband services. Since many telephony companies have emerged as internet service providers, DSL internet service is often bundled together with a landline telephone, especially in rural areas. This study examines the total cost of such bundled DSL internet service across the classes of cities …

Designing And Implementing A Peer-To-Peer Led Behavioral And Energy Reduction Program For Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jenn Hoody Dec 2020

Designing And Implementing A Peer-To-Peer Led Behavioral And Energy Reduction Program For Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jenn Hoody

Honors Theses

Reduction in energy consumption from fossil fuels is a necessary step toward combating climate change as more and more studies are revealing the catastrophic outcomes if the current trends do not change. Residential programs generally managed by energy utilities promoting energy cost savings and reduced consumption are being enacted to decrease the greenhouse emissions. However, thus far, little to no measures have been taken to extend the reach of such programs to low-income communities. Reducing household energy consumption would be particularly beneficial for these communities as it would lower utility bills for low-income households who spend a substantially greater portion …

Multi-Modal Data Analysis And Fusion For Classification In 2d/3d Sensing, Jonathan P. Schierl

Honors Theses

This research would develop a method of more accurately detecting objects using machine learning. There is plenty of current research and algorithms to tackle this problem. Our approach would use a dataset gathered with 2-Dimensional Infrared Imagery as well as 3-Dimensional LiDAR Data. We would develop a deep learning network with the ability to “learn” using both of these datasets. This proposed fusion network will perform better than either of the individual networks.
