Recent Advancements In The Application Of New Monomers And Membrane Modification Techniques For The Fabrication Of Thin Film Composite Membranes: A Review, Javad Farahbakhsh, Vahid Vatanpour, Mahsa Khoshnam, Masoumeh Zargar
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Thin film composite (TFC) membranes have been experiencing significant modifications recently aiming to improve their structure, properties and separation efficiency. One of the promising modifications to tailor the membranes more efficient is changing the materials used. m-phenylene diamine (MPD), piperazine (PIP), and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) are the most common monomers used to fabricate TFC membranes. Recent studies have introduced several alternatives to these traditional monomers showing significant contribution of these monomers to the physicochemical properties of the membranes (e.g., surface roughness, hydrophilicity, cross-linking density, chemical structure) as well as membranes' separation efficiency. Emergence of more favorable functional groups such as …

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exhibit a wide diversity in type, number, and severity of social deficits as well as communicative and cognitive difficulties. It is a challenge to categorize the phenotypes of a particular ASD patient with their unique genetic variants. There is a need for a better understanding of the connections between genotype information and the phenotypes to sort out the heterogeneity of ASD. In this study, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and phenotype data obtained from a simplex ASD sample are combined using a PheWAS-inspired approach to construct a phenotype-phenotype network. The network is clustered, yielding groups …

Frequency Estimation From Compressed Measurements Of A Sinusoid In Moving‐Average Colored Noise, Nuha A. S. Alwan, Zahir M. Hussain
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Frequency estimation of a single sinusoid in colored noise has received a considerable amount of attention in the research community. Taking into account the recent emergence and advances in compressive covariance sensing (CCS), the aim of this work is to combine the two disci-plines by studying the effects of compressed measurements of a single sinusoid in moving‐average colored noise on its frequency estimation accuracy. CCS techniques can recover the second‐order statistics of the original uncompressed signal from the compressed measurements, thereby enabling correlation‐based frequency estimation of single tones in colored noise using higher order lags. Ac-ceptable accuracy is achieved for …

Review On Machining Of Additively Manufactured Nickel And Titanium Alloys, Navneet Khanna, Kishan Zadafiya, Tej Patel, Yusuf Kaynak, Rizwan Abdul, Rahman Rashid, Ana Vafadar
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The machining of nickel and titanium-based superalloy components is very expensive and involves unusually high lead times compared with other engineering metals such as steels and aluminum. This has led to the development of most suitable additive manufacturing (AM) processes to fabricate these difficult-to-machine metals into near-net shape parts, thereby reducing the lead time and material waste, and significantly increasing productivity. Nonetheless, finish machining is still required on the AMed metal components to meet the dimensional and surface requirements of the application. Several research studies have investigated the machinability of AMed nickel and titanium alloy workpieces and have compared the …

Multi-Polarization Phase Retrieval In Near Field Far-Field Transformation, Yuan Ping, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In near field far-field transformation (NFFFT), accurate recovery of the current distribution is subjected to the phase measurement. Phase retrieval is an alternative way to recover the current distribution by utilizing the magnitude-only near field sampling data. In phase retrieval algorithm, sufficient independent measurement data are required. Multi-polarization algorithm is employed to generate different current distribution, then, obtaining more independent near field data. Experimental validations of a numeric examples show its potentialities and interest.

The emergence of highly directional beamforming technology makes millimeter wave frequency band communication possible in future wireless communication networks. Based on the multipath characteristics of millimeter wave frequency communication, a high-precision multipath channel estimation algorithm based on signal subspace is proposed. In the mobile terminal, an iterative heuristic radiofrequency combination algorithm based on spatial points is proposed. The analog precoding at the base station uses deep learning to accelerate the calculation, and then the multi-user communication is modeled to design the digital precoding. The simulation results show that the multi-channel estimation algorithm can estimate 4 paths with an error of …

Realization And Optimization Of Optical Logic Gates Using Bias Assisted Carrier-Injected Triple Parallel Microring Resonators, Fayza Kizhakkakath, Sooraj Ravindran, Kwangwook Park, Kamal Alameh, Yong Tak Lee
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
We propose a p-i-n diode embedded parallel triple microring resonator (MRR) configuration to simultaneously realize optical OR and AND, or NAND and NOR logic gates using a bias-assisted carrier injection mechanism. The applied bias on the rings induces refractive index change in the intrinsic region through bandfilling, bandgap shrinkage and free carrier absorption effects, leading to intensity variation at the output ports of the MRR due to respective resonant wavelength shift. The optical logic gate operational outputs are represented as the light intensities at the output ports of the MRR with the wavelength of the input optical signal launched into …

Short Word-Length Entering Compressive Sensing Domain: Improved Energy Efficiency In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nuha A. S. Alwan, Zahir M. Hussain
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This work combines compressive sensing and short word-length techniques to achieve localization and target tracking in wireless sensor networks with energy-efficient communication between the network anchors and the fusion center. Gradient descent localization is performed using time-of-arrival (TOA) data which are indicative of the distance between anchors and the target thereby achieving range-based localization. The short word-length techniques considered are delta modulation and sigma-delta modulation. The energy efficiency is due to the reduction of the data volume transmitted from anchors to the fusion center by employing any of the two delta modulation variants with compressive sensing techniques. Delta modulation allows …

Discovering governing equations for transmission line is essential for the study on its properties, especially when the nonlinearity is introduced in a transmission line system. In this paper, we propose a novel data-driven approach for deriving the governing partial differential equations based on the spatial-temporal samples of current and voltage in the transmission line system. The proposed method is based on the ridge regression algorithm to determine the active spatial differential terms from the candidate library that includes nonlinear functions, in which the time and spatial derivatives are estimated by using polynomial interpolation. Three examples, including uniform and nonuniform transmission …

Individual-Based Modelling Of Cyanobacteria Blooms: Physical And Physiological Processes, Mohammad H. Ranjbar, David P. Hamilton, Amir Etemad-Shahidi, Fernanda Helfer
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Lakes and reservoirs throughout the world are increasingly adversely affected by cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs). The development and spatiotemporal distributions of blooms are governed by complex physical mixing and transport processes that interact with physiological processes affecting the growth and loss of bloom-forming species. Individual-based models (IBMs) can provide a valuable tool for exploring and integrating some of these processes. Here we contend that the advantages of IBMs have not been fully exploited. The main reasons for the lack of progress in mainstreaming IBMs in numerical modelling are their complexity and high computational demand. In this review, we identify …

The longitudinal trajectory planning of connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) has been widely studied in the literature to reduce travel time or fuel consumptions. The safety impact of CAV trajectory planning to the mixed traffic flow with both CAV and human-driven vehicle (HDV), however, is not well understood yet. This study presents a reinforcement learning modeling approach, named Monte Carlo tree search-based autonomous vehicle safety algorithm, or MCTS-AVS, to optimize the safety of mixed traffic flow, on a one-lane roadway with signalized intersection control. Crash potential index (CPI) is defined to quantitively measure the safety performance of the mixed traffic …

Shear stress in dynamic thin films, as in vortex fluidics, can be harnessed for generating non-equilibrium conditions, but the nature of the fluid flow is not understood. A rapidly rotating inclined tube in the vortex fluidic device (VFD) imparts shear stress (mechanical energy) into a thin film of liquid, depending on the physical characteristics of the liquid and rotational speed,ω, tilt angle,θ, and diameter of the tube. Through understanding that the fluid exhibits resonance behaviours from the confining boundaries of the glass surface and the meniscus that determines the liquid film thickness, we have established specific topological mass transport regimes. …

Climate change is a key problem of the 21st century. Climate change is mainly caused by anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and one solution to this problem is to capture and store CO2 in deep coal seams, where it is immobilized by adsorption to the coal surface. Here we propose to modify the coal with methyl orange (MO), a typical dye that is also a major pollutant of the hydrosphere and removed thereby. Thus, raw and MO-modified coals were characterized to investigate their thermal stabilities, textural properties, carbon contents, surface characteristics, and CO2 adsorption on the coal samples was …

Amorphous metal nanoparticles (A-NPs) have aroused great interest in their structural disordering nature and combined downsizing strategies (e.g. nanoscaling), both of which are beneficial for highly strengthened properties compared to their crystalline counterparts. Conventional synthesis strategies easily induce product contamination and/or size limitations, which largely narrow their applications. In recent years, laser ablation in liquid (LAL) and laser fragmentation in liquid (LFL) as "green"and scalable colloid synthesis methodologies have attracted extensive enthusiasm in the production of ultrapure crystalline NPs, while they also show promising potential for the production of A-NPs. Yet, the amorphization in such methods still lacks sufficient rules …
