Model Curricula: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Online Journal of Space Communication

Many universities have added courses and curricula related to satellites and space. A search of the Internet reveals that few of these are designated degree programs in space studies degree, rather they are traditional programs offering courses and concentrations which involve study of space and space applications from several perspectives. The Internet search also reveals a large variation in both the titles and the curricula for these programs. The author has sought to standardize definitions, identify workable program names and suggest core courses. Five programs and their core courses are outlined for consideration.

Polymers And Solvents Used In Membrane Fabrication: A Review Focusing On Sustainable Membrane Development, Xiaobo Dong, David Lu, Tequila A. L. Harris, Isabel C. Escobar

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

(1) Different methods have been applied to fabricate polymeric membranes with non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) being one of the mostly widely used. In NIPS, a solvent or solvent blend is required to dissolve a polymer or polymer blend. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylformamide (DMF) and other petroleum-derived solvents are commonly used to dissolve some petroleum-based polymers. However, these components may have negative impacts on the environment and human health. Therefore, using greener and less toxic components is of great interest for increasing membrane fabrication sustainability. The chemical structure of membranes is not affected by the use of different solvents, …

Five Degree-Of-Freedom Property Interpolation Of Arbitrary Grain Boundaries Via Voronoi Fundamental Zone Octonion Framework, Sterling Gregory Baird Apr 2021

Five Degree-Of-Freedom Property Interpolation Of Arbitrary Grain Boundaries Via Voronoi Fundamental Zone Octonion Framework, Sterling Gregory Baird

Theses and Dissertations

In this work we introduce the Voronoi fundamental zone octonion (VFZO) interpolation framework for grain boundary (GB) structure-property models and surrogates. The VFZO framework offers an advantage over other five degree-of-freedom (5DOF) based property interpolation methods because it is constructed as a point set in a Riemannian manifold. This means that directly computed Euclidean distances approximate the original octonion distance with significantly reduced computation runtime (∼7 CPU minutes vs. 153 CPU days for a 50000×50000 pairwise-distance matrix). This increased efficiency facilitates lower interpolation error through the use of significantly more input data. We demonstrate grain boundary energy (GBE) interpolation results …

Sensible/Latent Hybrid Thermal Energy Storage For The Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Brayton Cycle, Kelly Osterman Apr 2021

Sensible/Latent Hybrid Thermal Energy Storage For The Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Brayton Cycle, Kelly Osterman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mitigating the effects of climate change will require rapid deployment of a carbon-free electricity system that includes all available forms of zero-carbon energy. Both renewables and nuclear show great promise, but both come with drawbacks. Power production from wind and solar is limited to times when their respective resources are available, while nuclear is limited in its ability to adjust its output according to the ever-varying demand for electricity. Additionally, the systems must be affordable. One way to reduce the cost of thermal power plants (concentrated solar power and nuclear) is to use new power cycles, such as the supercritical …

Peptoid Microsphere Coatings To Improve Performance In Sandwich Elisa Microarrays, Jesse L. Roberts, German R. Perez Bakovic, Shannon L. Servoss

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) microarray performance is limited by low assay sensitivity and dynamic range. Increasing the surface area for reagent binding can help to improve performance, but standard techniques such as roughening the surface or adding a polymer coating lead to increased non-specific fluorescence and do not have reproducibly improved performance. Another approach to increase surface area is adding a microsphere coating on the surface. Poly-N-substituted glycine (peptoid) microspheres are ideal for this application due to low immunogenicity, protease-resistance, and biocompatibility. Peptoids are polymers with a backbone similar to peptides, but with the side chains appended to nitrogen rather …

Adaptive And Neural Network-Based Aircraft Tracking Control With Synthetic Jet Actuators, Joshua Teramae Apr 2021

Adaptive And Neural Network-Based Aircraft Tracking Control With Synthetic Jet Actuators, Joshua Teramae

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Wing-embedded synthetic jet actuators (SJA) can be used to achieve maneuvering control in aircraft by delivering controllable airflow perturbations near the wing surface. Trajectory tracking control design for aircraft equipped with SJA is particularly challenging, since the controlling actuator itself has an uncertain dynamic model. These challenges necessitate advanced nonlinear control design methods to achieve desirable performance for SJA-based aircraft (e.g., micro air vehicles (MAVs)). In this research, adaptive and neural-network based control methods are investigated, which are specifically designed to compensate for the SJA dynamic model uncertainty and unpredictable operating conditions characters tic of real-world MAV applications. The control …

Funtionalization Of Morphologically Different Nanoclays For Enhanced Mechanical Properties, Malachi Kent

Honors College Theses

Nanoclays are microscopic clays that are comprised of layered nanoparticle aluminosilicates that are naturally arranged in several morphologies. Halloysite nanotubes (HNT) are hollow, double-layered tubes, bentonite (BNT) clays are trapezoidal platelets, and nanosilica or silica dioxide (SiO2) are spherical. These nanoclays were chosen for sustainable purposes as they are naturally derived and for economical purposes because of their cheap commercial availability. In this study, the nanoclays are functionalized with an epoxy organosilane group through reflux conditions at 120 °C for 24 hours. The pristine and functionalized nanoclays were extensively characterized with infrared radiation (IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope …

Quantification Of Wake Shape Modulation And Deflection For Tilt And Yaw Misaligned Wind Turbines, Juliaan Bossuyt, Ryan Scott, Naseem Ali, Raul Bayoan Cal

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Misaligned wind turbine rotors redirect the wake, and manipulate the wake shape by introducing a counter-rotating vortex pair. This mechanism is of great interest for improving wind farm power output through static or dynamic misalignment. In this study, cross-plane stereo-particle image velocimetry measurements are used to characterize the wake evolution for tilt misalignment and verify differences with yaw misalignment. Blockage from the ground, shear in the velocity profile, turbulence levels, hub-vortices and tip-vortices are found to strongly affect wake evolution for a tilted wind turbine resulting in a non-symmetric behaviour for upwards deflecting or downwards deflecting tilt. The downwards deflection …
