The natural fibers provide the primary reinforcement of these bricks, and aid in the drying process, helping the bricks dry evenly. While this material has been used as a residential building material for many hundreds of years, much is still not understood regarding its mechanical properties, as they are dependent on …

Assessment Of Contract Terms And Conditions For Lump-Sum Contracts, Omar Othman May 2021

Assessment Of Contract Terms And Conditions For Lump-Sum Contracts, Omar Othman

Theses and Dissertations

A Contract is a tool that defines the obligations of the contracting parties and assigns the risk between them. Contracts are usually drafted to meet the interests of the owner by addressing the legal issues and liabilities. Meanwhile, less emphasis is placed on clearly communicating the contract terms and ensuring that all contracting parties comprehend their risks and obligations. In a country like Egypt, which has faced drastic economic and political changes in the past few years, and yet is experiencing a boom in the construction sector, many developers tend to draft contracts that might be legally complicated or lacks …

Autonomous Optimal Trajectory Planning For Orbital Rendezvous, Satellite Inspection, And Final Approach Based On Convex Optimization, Nicholas Ortolano, David K. Geller, Aaron Avery

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Convex optimization techniques have deterministic convergence properties, are self-starting, i.e., they do not require an initial guess, and have been tested in real-time environments. These optimization techniques are applied to the trajectory planning problem for orbital rendezvous and proximity operations. Spacecraft rendezvous, inspection, and final approach trajectories are considered. Optional trajectory constraints are considered, including approach corridors, keep-out zones, and maximum thrust acceleration levels. Two linear dynamics models are investigated: Clohessy-Wiltshire dynamics to describe the relative motion in a local-horizontal local-vertical frame, and a new relative orbital motion dynamics model to describe the motion relative to a spinning or uncontrolled …

Uniform Strain-Dependent Thermal Conductivity Of Pentagonal And Hexagonal Silicene, Huake Liu, Guangzhao Qin, Ming Hu

Faculty Publications

Two-dimensional (2D) pentagonal monolayer structures have shown promising characteristics and fascinating physical and chemical properties. The disparate strain-dependent thermal conductivity of two-dimensional penta-structures was reported, but the difference between the silicon-based pentagonal and hexagonal structures is barely researched. In this work, based on first-principles calculations, we studied the strain-modulated phonon transport behavior of two 2D pentagonal (penta-SiH and bilayer penta-Si) and one hexagonal silicene structures (H-silicene), of which the penta-SiH and H-silicene mean the structures are hydrogenated for the purpose of thermodynamical stability. We found that the silicon-based pentagonal structure also presented a different strain-dependent thermal conductivity from other pentagonal …

Opinionrank: Extracting Ground Truth Labels From Unreliable Expert Opinions With Graph-Based Spectral Ranking, Glenn Dawson, Robi Polikar

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

As larger and more comprehensive datasets become standard in contemporary machine learning, it becomes increasingly more difficult to obtain reliable, trustworthy label information with which to train sophisticated models. To address this problem, crowdsourcing has emerged as a popular, inexpensive, and efficient data mining solution for performing distributed label collection. However, crowdsourced annotations are inherently untrustworthy, as the labels are provided by anonymous volunteers who may have varying, unreliable expertise. Worse yet, some participants on commonly used platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk may be adversarial, and provide intentionally incorrect label information without the end user's knowledge. We discuss three …

Designing Ai For Explainability And Verifiability: A Value Sensitive Design Approach To Avoid Artificial Stupidity In Autonomous Vehicles, Steven Umbrello, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

One of the primary, if not most critical, difficulties in the design and implementation of autonomous systems is the black-boxed nature of the decision-making structures and logical pathways. How human values are embodied and actualised in situ may ultimately prove to be harmful if not outright recalcitrant. For this reason, the values of stakeholders become of particular significance given the risks posed by opaque structures of intelligent agents. This paper explores how decision matrix algorithms, via the belief-desire-intention model for autonomous vehicles, can be designed to minimize the risks of opaque architectures. Primarily through an explicit orientation towards designing for …

Aerosol Vapor Synthesis Of Organic Processable Pedot Particles And Measuring Electric Conductivity Using A 3d Printed Probe Station, Yang Lu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Conducting polymers are organic semiconductors characterized by conjugated backbones (alternating single-double bonds) that enable mixed ionic-electronic conductivity. Their polymeric nature, tunable band structure and reversible redox capability have demonstrated fundamental advances in the fields ranging from electrochemical energy storage, sensing, to electro/photo catalysis and neuromorphic engineering. Conjugated backbones, the origin of all the unique physical and chemical properties associated with conducting polymers, prevent their solubility due to high lattice energy which hinders processing. Current solution utilizes a long-chain polymer (PSS) as dopants to render conducting polymer water dispersible (PEDOT:PSS). Nonetheless, PSS is highly acidic and hydrophilic limiting applicability with acid-incompatible …
