Optimizing Biomaterials For Ipsc-Derived Engineered Heart Tissue Models, Huanzhu Jiang
Optimizing Biomaterials For Ipsc-Derived Engineered Heart Tissue Models, Huanzhu Jiang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common inherited cardiovascular disease, where environmental forces and genetic mutations have been heavily linked to heart failure or sudden cardiac death in young people. However, how genetic mutations and environmental forces contribute to HCM phenotype are not well defined. To study the mechanisms and investigate the potential treatments of this disease, it is important to build a model to simulate mechanical loading and recreate micro-environment of cardiomyocytes. In vivo, surgical maneuvers like transaortic constriction allow the study of overload, but these approaches are low throughput and it is difficult to precisely control overload. …
Data-Driven Approaches To Solve Inverse Problems, Peijie Qiu
Data-Driven Approaches To Solve Inverse Problems, Peijie Qiu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The main purpose of this thesis is to discuss data-driven approaches to solve inverse problems in image reconstruction. In the Bayesian framework, the image prior serves as a regularizer in the computation of a maximum-a-posterior estimation of the reconstructed image. Classical image priors include Gaussian random space(e.g. Tikhonov regularization) or Besov prior (e.g. Total Variation regularization). Inspired by generative adversarial networks, a critic (discriminator) can serve as a regularizer, because of its capability of distinguishing the distribution of the ground-truth images from the distribution of the naively reconstructed images with classical regularization functional. Another data-driven approach, regularization by denoising (RED), …

Injectable Ct/Mri Contrast Agent For Gastrointestinal Tumor Tracking, Luna Zhang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Gastrointestinal cancers remain to be of the most common and deadly cancers worldwide. Early detection and treatments are crucial for reducing mortality and improving patient outcome. Radiation therapy is a non-invasive localized tumor treatment method, and utilizes radiation to kill the cancerous cells and shrink tumors at specific sites. Precise localization at the target tumor site is therefore important before radiation therapy, especially for gastrointestinal tumor sites located in the moving bowel. Currently, invasive endoscopies along with ink tattoos are used for identifying tumor location, which often require sedation and bring much discomfort. Imaging tests, including CT and MRI, play …

Symposium of Student Scholars
Studies show that the quality of the information collected during an elicitation interview, and consequently the quality of the software product that needs to be developed, highly depends on the interviewee's engagement. Because of social expectations, interviewees tend to hide if they are bored or not engaged. To overcome this problem and support the analyst during the interviews, this research uses biometric data and voice features, together with supervised machine learning algorithms, to predict the interviewee's engagement. We built our solution on an experiment consisted of interviewing 31 participants. We collected the data using an Empatica wristband and a default …

Diversifying Nuclear Technology: A Technical Analysis On Small Modular Reactors And Its Impact On Nuclear Energy Policy, Carolina Lugo Mejia, Marcos Lugo
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
The energy policy debate in the United States has revolved around the diversification of energy sources while promoting advantageous economic profits. One drive for this has been the discussion of anthropogenic, environmental endangerment concerns (Vlassopoulous 2011, 104). However, despite the environmental concerns, the U.S. has for some time only relied on one type of energy source—fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are categorized as natural gas, coal, petroleum, and other gases responsible (U.S. Energy Administration 2019). Natural gas is responsible for 38.4%, coal for 23.4%, petroleum for 0.4%, and other gases for 0.3% of the U.S.’s electrical generation (U.S. Energy Administration 2019). …

Thermochemistry Of Combustion In Polyvinyl Alcohol + Hydroxylammonium Nitrate, James K. Baird, Robert A. Frederick Jr.
PRC-Affiliated Research
A mixture of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hydroxylammoniun nitrate (HAN) forms a gummy solid known as a plastisol, which is ionically conducting. When an electrostatic potential of 200 V DC is applied across the plastisol, it ignites. Combustion ceases upon removal of the applied voltage. The products of PVA + HAN combustion are known to include the molecular gases carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen, and hydrogen. When the electric field within the plastisol is spatially uniform, combustion occurs preferentially at the anode. The fact that HAN is an ionic conductor suggests that the mechanism of combustion is electrolytic in …

On The Comparison Of Flow Physics Between Minimal And Extended Flow Units In Turbulent Channels, Ethan A. Davis, Siamak Mirfendereski, Jae Sung Park
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Direct numerical simulations were performed to study the effects of the domain size of a minimal flow unit (MFU) and its inherent periodic boundary conditions on flow physics of a turbulent channel flow in a range of 200 ≤ Reτ ≤ 1000. This was accomplished by comparing turbulent statistics with those computed in sub-domains (SD) of extended domain simulations. The dimensions of the MFU and SD were matched, and SD dynamics were set to minimize artificial periodicities. Streamwise and spanwise dimensions of healthy MFUs were found to increase linearly with Reynolds number. It was also found that both MFU …

Vacuum drying can dehydrate materials further than dry heat methods, while protecting sensitive materials from thermal degradation. Many industries have shifted to vacuum drying as cost-or time-saving measures. Small-scale vacuum drying, however, has been limited by the high costs of specialty scientific tools. To make vacuum drying more accessible, this study provides design and performance information for a small-scale open source vacuum oven, which can be fabricated from off-the-shelf and 3-D printed components. The oven is tested for drying speed and effectiveness on both waste plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and a consortium of bacteria developed for bioprocessing of terephthalate wastes …
Experimental Investigation Of Surface Resistivity Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium As A Thin Film, Matthew J. Melfi
Experimental Investigation Of Surface Resistivity Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium As A Thin Film, Matthew J. Melfi
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells are devices that use electrochemical reactions to convert chemical energy from fuel to electricity. In comparison with coal power plants, a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, produces a higher electrical conversion efficiency. However, at higher temperatures (1000°C) it creates a lower ionic conductivity, which limit the Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. When lowering the temperature, the ohmic resistance increases. In our research, an Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium layer will be produced from a fine dimple grain structure allowing high flow of oxygen mobility. This mobility increases ionic conductivity and decrease ohmic loss. The goal of our research is first …

Mechanics Of Catheter Herniation, Chase Hartquist
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Endovascular catheter-based technologies have revolutionized the treatment of complex vascular pathology. Catheters and endovascular devices that can be maneuvered through tortuous arterial anatomy have enabled minimally invasive treatment in the peripheral arterial system. Although mechanical factors drive an interventionalist's choice of catheters and sheaths, these decisions are mostly qualitative and based on personal experience and procedural pattern recognition. The field currently lacks a definitive quantitative characterization of endovascular tools that are best suited for specific peripheral arterial beds. This approach gives rise to a phenomenon called catheter herniation, which occurs when a catheter is energetically displaced or buckles while a …

Ph-Responsive Oxygen/Glucose Delivery System To Increase Cell Survival Under Ischemia, Yubin Ying
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Ischemic diseases, including myocardial infarction, stroke and limb ischemia, are life-threatening vascular diseases with high mortality. Under ischemic condition, less blood supply causes insufficient oxygen and nutrients transported to the affected tissues, which leads to cell death. To support cell survival under ischemia, oxygen and nutrients (especially glucose) are needed for aerobic respiration to generate energy. Therefore, directly supplying oxygen and glucose to the ischemic tissues is a promising therapy for ischemic diseases. In this work, we aim to design biomaterials to deliver oxygen and glucose to enhance cell survival under ischemia. In the first project, we fabricated oxygen releasing …

2050 Integrated Resource Plan For Public Services Company Of Colorado, Rehana Aziz, Josh Litwin
Master's Projects and Capstones
Our IRP aims to determine the optimal resource mix that will meet the forecasted load in 2030, 2040, and 2050. This report models a Reference or “business-as-usual” case and four alternative scenarios that deploy renewable energy resources or carbon capture technologies at varying levels to meet load at the beginning of each of these three decades. We assumed zero-carbon emissions targets for all four alternative scenarios, which go above and beyond Colorado’s current RPS. We are also retiring coal before 2040 for all four alternative scenarios in alignment with Xcel’s current plan.
The forecasted load in the Reference scenario is …
