Control Traffic And Queueing Latencies: Implicit Overheads In Bandwidth Sliced Software Defined Networks, Jesse Chen
Control Traffic And Queueing Latencies: Implicit Overheads In Bandwidth Sliced Software Defined Networks, Jesse Chen
Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
The southbound control protocols used in Software Defined Networks (SDNs) allow for centralized control and management of the data plane. However, these protocols introduce additional traffic and delay between network controllers and switches. Despite the well understood capabilities of SDNs, current representations of control traffic overhead consist of approximations at best. In addition to high reactivity to incoming flows, the need for resource allocation and deterministic messaging delay necessitates a thorough understanding and modeling of the amount of control traffic and its effect on latency. Software switching facilitates the development of edge and fog computing networks by allowing the use …
Predicting Tight Junction Formation Via Claudin Chimeras, Patrick Matthew Marsch
Predicting Tight Junction Formation Via Claudin Chimeras, Patrick Matthew Marsch
Theses - ALL
Tight junctions are vital to epithelial and endothelial barrier functions aiding in ion transport and preventing toxins from crossing into paracellular space. Claudins, made of four transmembrane helices and two extracellular loops, are a major part of the assembly of tight junctions along with other transmembrane proteins. The dimer interactions of two members of the 27-known members of the claudin family—claudin-2 and claudin-4—were analyzed. We created claudin chimera by switching claudin 2’s extracellular loops with claudin 4’s. The chimeras were analyzed using molecular dynamic simulations by comparing them to the natural claudins. This analysis provided new insight into the assembly …

Machine Learning on graphs has become an active research area due to the prevailing graph-structured data in the real world. Many real-world applications can be modeled with graphs. Modern application domains include web-scale social networks [26], recommender systems, knowledge graphs, and biological or protein networks. However, there are various challenges. First, the graphs generated from such applications are often large. Moreover, in some scenarios, the complete graph is not available, e.g., for privacy reasons. Thus, it becomes impractical to perform network analysis or compute various graph measures. Hence, graph sampling becomes an important task.Sampling is often the first step to …

Using An Integrative Machine Learning Approach To Study Microrna Regulation Networks In Pancreatic Cancer Progression, Roland Madadjim
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
With advances in genomic discovery tools, recent biomedical research has produced a massive amount of genomic data on post-transcriptional regulations related to various transcript factors, microRNAs, lncRNAs, epigenetic modifications, and genetic variations. In this direction, the field of gene regulation network inference is created and aims to understand the interactome regulations between these molecules (e.g., gene-gene, miRNA-gene) that take place to build models able to capture behavioral changes in biological systems. A question of interest arises in integrating such molecules to build a network while treating each specie in its uniqueness. Given the dynamic changes of interactome in chaotic systems …

Shape memory polymer (SMP) foams are a class of smart materials that show promise for managing uncontrolled hemorrhage on the battlefield. The current standard treatments of gauze and tourniquets are not able to effectively control hemorrhage in up to 80% of combat injuries. Most hemostatic devices also require removal within 12 hours of application. Patient transportation to a facility for removal may not be possible within this time frame and the removal process itself can cause further damage to the wound. As an alternative hemostatic device, polyurethane SMP foams have shown to be effective and biocompatible hemostats; however, removal still …

The global energy market has seen a massive increase in investment and capital flow in the last few decades. This has completely transformed the way power grids operate - legacy systems are now being replaced by advanced smart grid infrastructures that attest to better connectivity and increased reliability. One popular example is the extensive deployment of phasor measurement units, which is referred to PMUs, that constantly provide time-synchronized phasor measurements at a high resolution compared to conventional meters. This enables system operators to monitor in real-time the vast electrical network spanning thousands of miles. However, a targeted cyber attack on …

Lignocellulosic biomass is an alternative carbon source for industrial applications. γ-valerolactone (GVL) is an example of biomass-derived platform chemicals that provides multiple commercial potentials. Of interest here is the acid-catalyzed ring opening of GVL to form pentenoic acid (PEA) isomers and following decarboxylation to produce butenes. In this study, GVL ring opening, and decarboxylation are examined in both liquid and gas phases over various catalytic systems aiming at improving the efficiency in selective preparation of target product. An initial attempt was made in a biphasic reactor to improve the yield to PEA catalyzed by mineral acids (H2SO4). A wide range …

Detection and control are two essential components in an intelligent system. This thesis investigates novel techniques in both areas with a focus on the applications of handwritten text recognition and UAV flight control. Recognizing handwritten texts is a challenging task due to many different writing styles and lack of clear boundary between adjacent characters. The difficulty is greatly increased if the detection algorithms is solely based on pattern matching without information of dynamics of handwriting trajectories. Motivated by the aforementioned challenges, this thesis first investigates the pattern recognition problem. We use offline handwritten texts recognition as a case study to …

Human senses allow for the detection of simultaneous changes in our environments. An unobstructed field of view allows us to notice concurrent variations in different parts of what we are looking at. For example, when playing a video game, a player, oftentimes, needs to be aware of what is happening in the entire scene. Likewise, our hearing makes us aware of various simultaneous sounds occurring around us. Human perception can be affected by the cognitive ability of the brain and acuity of the senses. This is not a factor with machines. As long as a system is given a signal …

Modern networking and computing systems have become very complicated and highly dynamic, which makes them hard to model, predict and control. In this thesis, we aim to study system control problems from a whole new perspective by leveraging emerging Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), to develop experience-driven model-free approaches, which enable a network or a device to learn the best way to control itself from its own experience (e.g., runtime statistics data) rather than from accurate mathematical models, just as a human learns a new skill (e.g., driving, swimming, etc). To demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of this experience-driven control design …

Estimating The Sampling Efficiencies Of A Framed Midwater Trawl And Ring Net For Zooplankton Using An Acoustic Method, Zhen Lu, Tohru Mukai, Yasuzumi Fujimori, Kohji Iida
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
It is well known that there is bias using different sampling gear, such as a framed midwater trawl (FMT) and a ring net, when measuring the density and length distribution of target species. This limit is characterized by the sampling efficiency of the gear. Acoustic monitoring can be used to determine the sampling efficiencies of this gear, as its noninvasive, wide-range sweeps provide more reliable estimates of absolute abundance of the target species. The density measured by the gear can then be standardized by multiplying the initial density measurement by the derived sampling efficiency. In this study, we compared the …

In Situ Broadband Acoustic Measurements Of Age-0 Walleye Pollock And Pointhead Flounder In Funka Bay, Hokkaido, Japan, Kohei Hasegawa, Naizheng Yan, Tohru Mukai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Measurements of the broadband acoustic backscattering from fish should improve acoustic discrimination between species. The pulse compression processing of broadband systems can be used to measure acoustic backscattering with high range resolution and improve signal-to-noise ratio. This may increase opportunities for in situ target strength (TS) measurements, the preferred method of collecting TS data. To evaluate the availability of TS spectra for acoustic discrimination, three Simrad EK80 wideband transceivers and split-beam transducers of 70, 120, and 200 kHz were used to collect in situ frequency responses of TS from age-0 juvenile walleye pollock and pointhead flounder, a swimbladderless flat-fish, distributed …
Volume Scattering And Echo Integration In Fisheries Acoustics Revisited, Masahiko Furusawa
Volume Scattering And Echo Integration In Fisheries Acoustics Revisited, Masahiko Furusawa
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Echo integration is the most important method in fisheries acoustics. The basis of the method is volume scattering theory, and the theory assumes that many fish are randomly and homogeneously distributed broader than a beam spread. In actual acoustic surveys, however, we encounter various distributions for which these assumptions do not hold. It is the echo integration method that hypothetically fulfills these assumptions. In this paper, we review the volume scattering theory and the echo integration method historically and theoretically and confirm their bases. We then point out some misunderstandings affected by historical constraints such as the persistence of time …
