Coal Geology & Exploration
In order to solve the problem of poor imaging effect of near surface karst cave and goaf location seismic data in seismic exploration, this paper summarizes the frequency, energy and signal-to-noise ratio characteristics of seismic data in this area using forward modeling combined with actual data analysis. On this basis, a set of corresponding processing methods are proposed, including micro log constrained tomography static correction, weak signal extraction and compensation, pre-stack five dimensional data regularization and structure constrained grid tomography velocity modeling. Through the application in Nanchuan area, the signal-to-noise ratio and wave group continuity of seismic data are obviously …

The Application Of Opposing Coils Transient Electromagnetics In The Detection Of Karst Subsidence Area, Xie Jia, Liu Yang, Li Xingqiang, Lu Yulong, Li Ganlong
Coal Geology & Exploration
Ground collapse caused by karst is both disastrous and covert. In order to forecast and control it effectively, a research area with strong karst collapse development was selected in this study, and a method that combines Opposing Coils Transient Electromagnetics with engineering geological drilling was used to verify the formation occurrence through the factors including buried depth of overburden, resistivity and isoline variation. The results of geophysical inversion maps and borehole information verification show that the Opposing Coils Transient Electromagnetics method can effectively identify the development of underground corrosion. Especially in the area where the conventional geophysical exploration methods may …

Borehole-Roadway Seismic-While-Mining Tomography Using Correlation Time Difference, Wang Yunhong, Wang Baoli, Cheng Jianyuan, Cui Weixiong, Jin Dan
Coal Geology & Exploration
Using shearer as a source, seismic-while-mining(SWM) technology has realized dynamic, accurate and green intelligent detection in fully mechanized mining faces, and can be used to detect static geological anomaly and dynamic mining geological disasters within the work face. Conventional SWM observation system has the defect of blind area. To solve this problem, a new observation system with detectors installed in both roadway and within boreholes are proposed, which effectively improved the imaging range. Based on seismic interferometry principle, using frequency domain correlation algorithm, this paper turns the SWM signal to explosive source signal, and computes the equivalent shot sets. In …

Phenotyping plants is an essential component of any effort to develop new crop varieties. As plant breeders seek to increase crop productivity and produce more food for the future, the amount of phenotype information they require will also increase. Traditional plant phenotyping relying on manual measurement is laborious, time-consuming, error-prone, and costly. Plant phenotyping robots have emerged as a high-throughput technology to measure morphological, chemical and physiological properties of large number of plants. Several robotic systems have been developed to fulfill different phenotyping missions. In particular, robotic phenotyping has the potential to enable efficient monitoring of changes in plant traits …

Comparison Of Promoter, Dna Vector, And Cationic Carrier For Efficient Transfection Of Hmscs From Multiple Donors And Tissue Sources, Tyler Kozisek, Andrew Hamann, Luke Samuelson, Miguel Fudolig, Angela K. Pannier
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are primary cells with high clinical relevance that could be enhanced through genetic modification. However, gene delivery, particularly through nonviral routes, is inefficient. To address the shortcomings of nonviral gene delivery to hMSCs, our lab has previously demonstrated that pharmacological “priming” of hMSCs with clinically approved drugs can increase transfection in hMSCs by modulating transfection-induced cytotoxicity. However, even with priming, hMSC transfection remains inefficient for clinical applications. This work takes a complementary approach to addressing the challenges of transfecting hMSCs by systematically investigating key transfection parameters for their effect on transgene expression. Specifically, we investigated …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Industrial robots are being used more and more for manufacturing applications that require accuracy beyond what can be obtained from joint measurement. While offline calibration techniques such as volumetric error compensation can be used to correct robot kinematic error, these methods are unable to compensate for robot deformations caused by changing tool loads during the manufacturing operation. This paper explores the use of a real-time robot kinematic error compensation technique where an external high-precision feedback sensor (in this case a laser tracker) directly measures the robot kinematic error and corrections are implemented during processing. A robot kinematic error model is …

Influence Of Coating Defects Within The Lock Seams On The Corrosion Performance Of Aluminized Steel Drainage Pipes, Mohammed Al Yaarubi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The electrochemical behavior of aluminized steel is investigated to determine the corrosion performance of coating deficiencies generated within the lock seams during the fabrication of aluminized steel corrugated pipe. Electrochemical techniques and visual and profilometric analysis are used to assess the ability of the aluminum and zinc coating to provide sufficient galvanic protection to the underlying steel in the presence of a crevice. Also, Crevice coupons and lock-seam samples were used in this investigation in different environmental conditions simulating natural water conditions to relate the corrosion rate with the level of protection that the coating will provide. In addition, a …
Development Of A Numerical Process Model For Adsorbent-Amended Constructed Wetlands, Lillian Mulligan
Development Of A Numerical Process Model For Adsorbent-Amended Constructed Wetlands, Lillian Mulligan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a need for alternative methods for municipal landfill leachate treatment as the high concentrations of pollutants in leachate interfere with processes at publicly owned treatment works (POTWs). Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been shown to be a sustainable alternative with good removal efficiencies for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+). The addition of an adsorbent media, such as zeolite and biochar, to CWs to further enhance removal efficiencies has been investigated in recent years. However, the long-term effects of zeolite and biochar addition to CWs is not well known. A model could be a useful tool to …

Flow Visualization And Aerosol Characterization Of Respiratory Jets Exhaled From A Mannequin Simulator, Sindhu Reddy Mutra
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
It is important to understand the airborne transmission of infectious diseases due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Physical experiments were conducted to understand the dispersion of aerosols emitted from a mannequin simulator replicating human tidal breathing through the nose and mouth with and without a protective face mask in an enclosed space. Flow patterns are observed via high-speed visualization, and the concentration and size distribution of the particles is measured as a function of distance from the mannequin using an optical particle sizer. Masks were shown to effectively reduce the horizontal dispersion of aerosol for both mouth and nose breathing. Further, …
Corrosion Propagation Of Stainless Steel Reinforced Concrete, Nelly Sofía Orozco Martínez
Corrosion Propagation Of Stainless Steel Reinforced Concrete, Nelly Sofía Orozco Martínez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Structural durability is a growing concern in global infrastructure. The infrastructure report card released by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) indicates that approximately 9.1% of the total bridges in the United States were structurally deficient in 2016. In addition, it suggests that about 40% of the total bridges in the country are now 50 years or older. This issue becomes even more critical in structures exposed to aggressive environments such as marine structures. Thus, federal and regional efforts are now being directed towards infrastructural durability improvement to improve the long-term cost-efficiency of civil infrastructure.
Corrosion prevention strategies may …
Corrosion Durability Service Life Of Calcium Silicate-Based Reinforced Concrete, Carolina Páez Jiménez
Corrosion Durability Service Life Of Calcium Silicate-Based Reinforced Concrete, Carolina Páez Jiménez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Corrosion of reinforcing steel is a major area of study for assessing durability of reinforced concrete infrastructure. Conventional concrete infrastructure designs use ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as the primary cementitious material. However, the world's current challenge to achieve sustainable development requires the cement industry to reduce its environmental impact, as it is responsible for 8% of the anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Hence, a new type of cement has been developed. This novel calcium silicate cement (CSC) reduces the carbon dioxide emissions during its manufacturing process as compared to OPC, providing an environmentally-sound alternative for reinforced concrete fabrication.
Corrosion of steel reinforcement …

Sustainability Assessment Of A Pressure Retarded Osmosis System, Samar Al Mashrafi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Desalination has the potential to provide a stable supply of clean fresh water and meet the increasing water demands; however, this process does come with a few challenges such as high energy consumption, high energy cost, and a discharge of a highly concentrated brine. Pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) is a technology that could work as an efficient energy recovery technology for desalination since it can significantly reduce the energy consumption and dilute the brine before discharge. Studies have assessed the economic feasibility of PRO systems; however, these studies have not addressed the environmental sustainability of the systems. Thus, there is …

Sitting down to write this article at a desk some 30 miles south of central London, and less than one degree west of the Greenwich meridian, I became immediately more conscious than usual of geography. The frequently interwoven use of such western-centric cartographic labels as Middle East, and Far East, with the geographically more precise terms of Western or Central Asia, and East and South-East Asia, sometimes causes us to confuse the actual proximity of Europe's, much larger, near-neighbour.

For Africa, and for the economy of the whole planet, those hundreds of millions of people across the continent who are currently denied reasonable access to even simple voice service represent a vast untapped pool of creativity. This very large and potentially very powerful economic dynamo demands access to more than the simplest tools of communication, and requires the means to unleash the potential productivity of its own knowledge-base into an increasingly connected world. The International Telecommunications Union acknowledges this, as does its sister organisation, the United Nations. The Global VSAT Forum enjoins you to acknowledge it too.

Aquatic therapy for rehabilitation can be performed in a variety of environments, which can vary from a traditional swimming pool to a self-contained underwater treadmill. While kinematic analysis has been performed in large volume swimming pools using specific underwater motion capture systems, researchers may only have access to a land-based motion-capture system, which is not waterproof. Additionally, underwater motion capture systems may not fit within the confines of a smaller underwater treadmill. Thus, the purpose of this study was to design and analyze methodology to quantify lower limb kinematics during an aquatic treadmill session, using a land-based motion capture system. …
