Exploring Robustness Of Neural Networks Through Graph Measures, Asim Waqas, Ghulam Rasool, Hamza Farooq, Nidhal Carla Bouaynaya

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Motivated by graph theory, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are traditionally structured as layers of neurons (nodes), which learn useful information by the passage of data through interconnections (edges). In the machine learning realm, graph structures (i.e., neurons and connections) of ANNs have recently been explored using various graph-theoretic measures linked to their predictive performance. On the other hand, in network science (NetSci), certain graph measures including entropy and curvature are known to provide insight into the robustness and fragility of real-world networks. In this work, we use these graph measures to explore the robustness of various ANNs to adversarial attacks. …

A Comparison Between Ultrasonic Guidedwave Leakage And Half-Cell Potential Methods In Detection Of Corrosion In Reinforced Concrete Decks, Ahmad Shoaib Amiri, Ece Erdogmus, Dana Richter-Egger

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

This article presents the advantages and limitations of a recently developed Ultrasonic Guided Wave Leakage (UGWL) method in comparison to the well-known Half-Cell Potential (HCP) method in their ability to detect corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) bridge decks. This research also establishes a correlation between UGWL data and chloride content in concrete RC slabs. Concrete slabs submerged in a 10% NaCl solution were monitored using both methods over a period of six months. The chloride content from the three cores (0.84, 0.55, and 0.18%) extracted from the slab after the 6-month long process all exceeded the chloride threshold values suggested …

On Using The Bmcsl Equation Of State To Renormalize The Onsager Theory Approach To Modeling Hard Prolate Spheroidal Liquid Crystal Mixtures, Donya Ohadi, David S. Corti, Mark J. Uline Jun 2021

On Using The Bmcsl Equation Of State To Renormalize The Onsager Theory Approach To Modeling Hard Prolate Spheroidal Liquid Crystal Mixtures, Donya Ohadi, David S. Corti, Mark J. Uline

Faculty Publications

Modifications to the traditional Onsager theory for modeling isotropic–nematic phase transitions in hard prolate spheroidal systems are presented. Pure component systems are used to identify the need to update the Lee–Parsons resummation term. The Lee–Parsons resummation term uses the Carnahan–Starling equation of state to approximate higher-order virial coefficients beyond the second virial coefficient employed in Onsager’s original theoretical approach. As more exact ways of calculating the excluded volume of two hard prolate spheroids of a given orientation are used, the division of the excluded volume by eight, which is an empirical correction used in the original Lee–Parsons resummation term, must …

An Analytical Method Of Switching Waveform Design For Harmonic Elimination, Sraddhanjoli Bhadra Jun 2021

An Analytical Method Of Switching Waveform Design For Harmonic Elimination, Sraddhanjoli Bhadra

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we have investigated an analytical approach for solving a set of transcendental equations commonly encountered in Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE). Generally, numerical solutions are used to solve the transcendental equations, which require guessing of an initial value and a valid value of modulation index m. Invalid initial values and an invalid m affect convergence. Such difficulties can be avoided with analytical solutions. The solution set will also determine the possible range of m valid for that modulation. Due to the complexity of solution that often requires computer algorithm to find a solution, we plan to develop design …

Wetting Simulations Of High-Performance Polymer Resins On Carbon Surfaces As A Function Of Temperature Using Molecular Dynamics, Swapnil S. Bamane, Prashik S. Gaikwad, Matthew Radue, S. Gowtham, Gregory M. Odegard

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Resin/reinforcement wetting is a key parameter in the manufacturing of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based composite materials. Determining the contact angle between combinations of liquid resin and reinforcement surfaces is a common method for quantifying wettability. As experimental measurement of contact angle can be difficult when screening multiple high-performance resins with CNT materials such as CNT bundles or yarns, computational approaches are necessary to fa-cilitate CNT composite material design. A molecular dynamics simulation method is developed to predict the contact angle of high-performance polymer resins on CNT surfaces dominated by aromatic carbon, aliphatic carbon, or a mixture thereof (amorphous carbon). Several resin …

Somatic Inhibition By Microscopic Magnetic Stimulation, Hui Ye

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Electric currents can produce quick, reversible control of neural activity. Externally applied electric currents have been used in inhibiting certain ganglion cells in clinical practices. Via electromagnetic induction, a miniature-sized magnetic coil could provide focal stimulation to the ganglion neurons. Here we report that high-frequency stimulation with the miniature coil could reversibly block ganglion cell activity in marine mollusk Aplysia californica, regardless the firing frequency of the neurons, or concentration of potassium ions around the ganglion neurons. Presence of the ganglion sheath has minimal impact on the inhibitory effects of the coil. The inhibitory effect was local to the …

Helipad Detection From Satellite Imagery Using Convolutional Neural Networks, David Specht Jun 2021

Helipad Detection From Satellite Imagery Using Convolutional Neural Networks, David Specht

Theses and Dissertations

Location data about U.S. heliports is often inaccurate or nonexistent in the FAA's databases, which leaves pilots and air ambulance operators with inaccurate information about where to find safe landing zones. In the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act, Congress required the FAA to collect better information from the helicopter industry under part 157, which covers the construction, alteration, activation and deactivation of airports and heliports. At the same time, there is no requirement to report private helipads to the FAA when constructed or removed, and some public heliports do not have up to date records. This thesis proposes an autonomous system …

Lake formation and drainage are pervasive phenomena in permafrost regions. Drained lake basins (DLBs) are often the most common landforms in lowland permafrost regions in the Arctic (50% to 75% of the landscape). However, detailed assessments of DLB distribution and abundance are limited. In this study, we present a novel and scalable remote sensing-based approach to identifying DLBs in lowland permafrost regions, using the North Slope of Alaska as a case study. We validated this first North Slope-wide DLB data product against several previously published sub-regional scale datasets and manually classified points. The study area covered >71,000 km2, including a …

Simulation Of Compound Flood Events In Low-Gradient Coastal Watershed, Felix Luis Santiago-Collazo Jun 2021

Simulation Of Compound Flood Events In Low-Gradient Coastal Watershed, Felix Luis Santiago-Collazo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Low-gradient coastal watersheds are susceptible to flooding caused by various flows such as rainfall, tides, and storm surge. Compound flooding occurs when at least two of these mechanisms happen simultaneously or in close succession. Different inundation models, observed data, and/or a combination of these are coupled through varying techniques involving one-way, loosely, tightly, or fully coupled approaches to assess compound flooding. This study presents a one-dimensional (1-D), fully coupled compound inundation model based on the Shallow Water equations. This model approach simultaneously simulates the free water surface variations in the ocean domain (i.e., tide and storm surge modeling), rainfall-runoff in …

Evaluation Of Deep Learning Against Conventional Limit Equilibrium Methods For Slope Stability Analysis, Behnam Azmoon, Aynaz Biniyaz, Zhen (Leo) Liu

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

This paper presents a comparison study between methods of deep learning as a new cat-egory of slope stability analysis, built upon the recent advances in artificial intelligence and conventional limit equilibrium analysis methods. For this purpose, computer code was developed to cal-culate the factor of safety (FS) using four limit equilibrium methods: Bishop’s simplified method, the Fellenius method, Janbu’s simplified method, and Janbu’s corrected method. The code was ver-ified against Slide2 in RocScience. Subsequently, the average FS values were used to approximate the “true” FS of the slopes for labeling the images for deep learning. Using this code, a comprehensive …

Using a set of large eddy point-particle simulations, we explore the fluid dynamics of an ejected puff resulting from a cough/sneeze. The ejection contains over 61 000 potentially virus-laden droplets at an injection Reynolds number of about 46 000, comparable to an actual cough/sneeze. We observe that global puff properties, such as centroid, puff volume, momentum, and buoyancy vary little across realizations. Other properties, such as maximum extent, shape, and edge velocity of the puff, may exhibit substantial variation. In many realizations, a portion of the puff splits off and advances along a random direction, while keeping airborne droplet nuclei …

Preparation Of Co1-XS-Mns@Cnts/Cnfs For Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Fang-Yan Liu, Qian Zhang, Yue-Kun Li, Feng Huang, Meng-Ye Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

As an important cathode reaction in fuel cells and metal-air batteries, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a complex reaction of slow kinetics, which severely limits performances of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Therefore, it is of key importance to find an efficient and stable electrocatalyst to promote ORR. Carbon-based materials, which possess high conductivity, good stability and large specific surface area, are usually used in electrocatalytic ORR. However, pure carbon-based materials exhibit low efficiency. Coupling carbon-based materials with manganese (Mn) and cobalt (Co) transition metals containing 3d orbitals is an effective way to improve electrocatalytic performance. Herein, carbon nanofibers containing …
