Fluid power is not an engineering topic usually presented to students in grades K-12. However undergraduate students in various programs are required to learn this concept. Evidence exists that indicates college students are more easily engaged when fluid power has been introduced earlier in their schooling. Thus, a variety of organizations are beginning work toward providing programs to creatively present the topic to younger students. After an examination of existing literature, we found minimal evidence of this type of work having been carried out and reported on. This study examines data from workshops designed to introduce fluid power to middle …

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
There are six levels of vehicle automation, from Level 0 – no automation to Level 5, fully autonomous [1]. According to several projections, the majority of vehicles on the road will be at intermediate levels for the next several years, meaning that vehicle-to-human takeover will be required in cases where the systems can no longer function due to design limitations, such as under poor weather conditions or in a construction zone [2], [3]. As shown in Fig. 1, the takeover process consists of signal response and post-takeover phases, which involves multiple steps, including perceiving the takeover requests (TOR), moving hands …

Efficient Yet Robust Privacy For Video Streaming, Luke Cranfill, Junggab Son
Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
MPEG-DASH is a video streaming standard that outlines protocols for sending audio and video content from a server to a client over HTTP. The standard has been widely utilized by the video streaming industry. However, it creates an opportunity for an adversary to invade users’ privacy. While a user is watching a video, information is leaked in the form of meta-data, the size and time that the server sent data to the user. This information is not protected by encryption and can be used to create a fingerprint for a video. Once the fingerprint is created, the adversary can use …

Developments in irrigation technologies have subsequently led to increases in irrigation application efficiency, including conversion from surface to sprinkler irrigation, variable rate irrigation (VRI), and low energy precision application. However, while these increases in application efficiency may reduce water withdrawals and/or diversions (from groundwater or surface water), they may not necessarily translate to additional water being available for future or downstream use. Consumptive use of water, water consumed and not returned to the local or sub-regional watershed, is not necessarily impacted by increased application efficiency, but is an important metric in conserving water for other uses. One recent irrigation technology …

This paper presents a new variant of the Multi-Vehicle Cyclic Inventory Routing Problem (MV-CIRP) which aims to determine a subset of customers to be visited, the appropriate number of vehicles used, and the corresponding cycle time and route sequence, such that the total cost (e.g. transportation, inventory, and rewards) is minimized. The MV-CIRP is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. We propose a Simulated Annealing (SA) based algorithm to solve the problem. SA is first tested on the available benchmark Single-Vehicle CIRP (SV-CIRP) instances and compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms. SA is then tested on the benchmark MV-CIRP instances …

Step-Wise Deep Learning Models For Solving Routing Problems, Liang Xin, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Routing problems are very important in intelligent transportation systems. Recently, a number of deep learning-based methods are proposed to automatically learn construction heuristics for solving routing problems. However, these methods do not completely follow Bellman's Principle of Optimality since the visited nodes during construction are still included in the following subtasks, resulting in suboptimal policies. In this article, we propose a novel step-wise scheme which explicitly removes the visited nodes in each node selection step. We apply this scheme to two representative deep models for routing problems, pointer network and transformer attention model (TAM), and significantly improve the performance of …

Based on eye tracking technology, we study consumers’ overall attention to recommendations appearing at different time settings (i.e., early, mid, and late) and their attention to different information contained in each recommendation, such as recommendation signs, product descriptions, and reviews. By investigating consumers’ eye movement patterns and attention distributions on recommendations, we open the “black box” of why consumers’ reception to recommendations appearing at different time settings varies. The product preference construction literature and mindset theory help to explain why the early recommendations receive the most attention. The need for justification helps to explain why the late recommendations should receive …
