Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Surveillance of injuries in production agriculture is necessary to inform stakeholders about workplace hazards and risks in order to improve and advance injury prevention policies and practices for this dangerous industry. The most comprehensive fatal injury surveillance effort currently in the United States is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), which covers occupational fatalities in all U.S. industries, including production agriculture. However, this surveillance does not include many categories of fatalities that occur during agricultural work or on production agriculture worksites. To better capture the human cost of production agriculture, the authors of this …

Establishing Safe Operating Speeds For Autonomous Vehicles: A Case Study From The Automated Skyway Express In Jacksonville, Florida, Andrew Loken Jul 2021

Establishing Safe Operating Speeds For Autonomous Vehicles: A Case Study From The Automated Skyway Express In Jacksonville, Florida, Andrew Loken

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) differ significantly from traditional passenger vehicles in both their behavior and physical characteristics. As such, the validity of the guidance provided in the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, Second Edition (MASH 2016) is questionable in AV applications. Impact conditions specified in MASH 2016 are inextricably linked to the traditional vehicles underlying the estimates. For AV applications, conditions must be estimated from the ground up, stepping outside the guidance of MASH 2016. Herein, a method for evaluating existing infrastructure to support AV traffic is proposed. The method integrates traditional structural analyses with unconventional methods of estimating impact conditions. …

Multimedia Networks And Communications, Houbing Song

Publications

Sight and sound is a type of correspondence that joins distinctive substance structures like content, sound, pictures, liveliness, or video into a solitary show, rather than customary broad communications, like written word or sound chronicles. Famous instances of interactive media incorporate video web recordings, sound slideshows and animated videos. Multimedia can be recorded for playback on PCs, workstations, cell phones, and other electronic gadgets, either on request or progressively (streaming). In the early long stretches of sight and sound, the expression "rich media" was inseparable from intuitive mixed media. Over the long run. Improved degrees of intuitiveness are made conceivable …

Cmos Charge Amplifier For Scientific Instruments, Yixin Song

Theses and Dissertations

Charge detection is essential for a large number of commercial and scientific applications. A charge amplifier is one of the most fundamental building blocks for a detector system. This thesis describes the design, circuit implementation, and post-silicon testing of two different charge amplifier designs, analog and digital, that address some commonly seen fundamental challenges in the charge detection application. In particular, the proposed designs can be integrated with an image charge detector (ICD) to study the characteristics of dust on Mars. The proposed charge amplifier design utilizes a small 10 fF feedback capacitor to achieve a high gain. The fully …

Ductile Design And Predicted Inelastic Response Of Steel Moment Frame Buildings For Extreme Wind Loads, Tyler Eric Giles Jul 2021

Ductile Design And Predicted Inelastic Response Of Steel Moment Frame Buildings For Extreme Wind Loads, Tyler Eric Giles

Theses and Dissertations

Inelastic design methods have been used in seismic design for several years and are well accepted in engineering practice. In contrast, an inelastic wind design method is yet to be developed, in part due to the inherent differences between seismic forces and wind forces. Current wind design practice follows a linear method to find a design windspeed for the location where the structure will be built. Once the design windspeed has been determined, the lateral force resisting system is designed such that it will behave elastically. This study was conducted with the hypothesis that by providing ductility at the material …

Assessment And Expansion Of Laboratory-Based Testing Of Biomass Cookstoves, Cameron M. Quist Jul 2021

Assessment And Expansion Of Laboratory-Based Testing Of Biomass Cookstoves, Cameron M. Quist

Theses and Dissertations

Biomass cookstoves are a significant source of various pollutants, such as CO2, CO, and particulate matter (PM). To mitigate the issues surrounding cookstoves, significant research has been undertaken on improved cookstoves (ICS). This research can be performed in a laboratory setting, in the field, or a combination of both. This work concentrates on the purely laboratory testing. Laboratory testing has both advantages and disadvantages when compared to field testing (e.g. decreased cost and increased consistency). However, field applications are variable, environments can be significantly different (for example wind and ambient temperature can be very different in the field vs. a …

From Attitude To Satisfaction: Introducing The Travel Mode Choice Cycle, Jonas De Vos, Patrick A. Singleton, Tommy Gärling Jul 2021

From Attitude To Satisfaction: Introducing The Travel Mode Choice Cycle, Jonas De Vos, Patrick A. Singleton, Tommy Gärling

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Many studies analysing the relationship between attitudes and travel behaviour have found that travel attitudes have an important impact on travel mode choice. More recently, studies focusing on how people experience travel have shown that travel satisfaction is influenced by the chosen travel mode. The desire and intention of using a travel mode – which can be considered as important predictors of mode choice – have, however, received limited attention. Furthermore, existing studies mostly have a narrow scope and lack integration of the above constructs. In this paper, we introduce the travel mode choice cycle (TMCC), a comprehensive model aiming …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The radiative transfer equation (RTE) is strongly coupled to the material response code KATS. A P-1 approximation model of RTE is used to account for radiation heat transfer within the material. First, the verification of the RTE model is performed by comparing the numerical and analytical solutions. Next, the coupling scheme is validated by comparing the temperature profiles of pure conduction and conduction coupled with radiative emission. The validation study is conducted on Marschall et al. cases (radiant heating, arc-jet heating, and space shuttle entry), 3D Block, 2D IsoQ sample, and Stardust Return Capsule. The validation results agree well for …

Exploiting The Role Of Nanoparticles For Use In Hydrogel-Based Bioprinting Applications: Concept, Design, And Recent Advances, Aishik Chakraborty, Avinava Roy, Shruthi Polla Ravi, Arghya Paul

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Publications

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is an emerging tissue engineering approach that aims to develop cell or biomolecule-laden, complex polymeric scaffolds with high precision, using hydrogel-based “bioinks”. Hydrogels are water-swollen, highly crosslinked polymer networks that are soft, quasi-solid, and can support and protect biological materials. However, traditional hydrogels have weak mechanical properties and cannot retain complex structures. They must be reinforced with physical and chemical manipulations to produce a mechanically resilient bioink. Over the past few years, we have witnessed an increased use of nanoparticles and biological moiety-functionalized nanoparticles to fabricate new bioinks. Nanoparticles of varied size, shape, and surface chemistries can …

Tunable Topological Photonic Crystal Waveguides, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with C-{6v} symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By …

Design Validation Of A Multi-Stage Gradually Deploying Stent, Dillon J. Despain Jul 2021

Design Validation Of A Multi-Stage Gradually Deploying Stent, Dillon J. Despain

Theses and Dissertations

Angioplasty, or the use of rapidly deploying stents, is a common treatment for reopening narrowed vasculature often caused by atherosclerotic plaque. However, in-stent restenosis (ISR) induced by intimal hyperplasia is a common challenge to angioplasty. High impact stresses from current stent deployment processes have been linked to intimal hyperplasia; thus a stent that is gradually deployed over a longer period of time holds potential to mitigate these stresses. This work hypothesizes that resorbable polymeric links can be used as a triggering mechanism to enable repeatably controlled deployment of a compliant nitinol stent design with the eventual goal of reducing intimal …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19, is a new, highly pathogenic coronavirus, which is the third coronavirus to emerge in the past 2 decades and the first to become a global pandemic. The virus has demonstrated itself to be extremely transmissible and deadly. Recent data suggest that a targeted approach is key to mitigating infectivity. Due to the proliferation of cataloged protein and nucleic acid sequences in databases, the function of the nucleic acid, and genetic encoded proteins, we make predictions by simply aligning sequences and exploring their homology. Thus, similar amino acid sequences in a protein usually confer similar biochemical …

With the continued development of modern vehicular communication systems, there is an ever growing need for cutting edge security in these systems. A misbehavior detection systems (MDS) is a tool developed to determine if a vehicle is being attacked so that the vehicle can take steps to mitigate harm from the attacker. Some attacks such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are a concern for vehicular communication systems. During a DDoS attack, multiple nodes are used to flood the target with an overwhelming amount of communication packets. In this thesis, we investigated the current MDS literature and how it …

Effect Of Degradation Environment And Relative Humidity On Fracture Of Cement, Patience L. Raby Jul 2021

Effect Of Degradation Environment And Relative Humidity On Fracture Of Cement, Patience L. Raby

Civil Engineering ETDs

Concrete serves in all forms of humidity conditions (arid climates to submerged conditions) and can be exposed to many different forms of degradation. To better understand the effects that degradation and humidity have on concrete as a composite, the effects on cement alone must first be better understood. This research aims to examine the significance of degradation (calcium leaching or sulfate attack), in addition to relative humidity, on cracking and fracture behavior of cement. Flexure and fracture tests were performed on cement exposed to varying periods of each form of degradation as well as various humidities. Samples were exposed to …

Fracture toughness was tested according to ASTM 1820 standard along the weld centerline using surface-notched SEB specimen cooled to -40 °C. This study resulted in a reliable, repeatable process for generating friction stir welds with CTOD’s consistently above that of the original base metal. CTOD and microstructure of friction stir welds can be selected by controlling weld cooling rate and peak temperature. Material properties and microstructure similar …

Use Of Vertical Electrical Impedance For Nondestructive Evaluation Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Enoch Thomas Boekweg Jul 2021

Use Of Vertical Electrical Impedance For Nondestructive Evaluation Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Enoch Thomas Boekweg

Theses and Dissertations

Nondestructive evaluation of civil infrastructure is increasingly important in the modern world to assess structures, predict longevity, and prescribe rehabilitation or replacement. For concrete bridge decks, one emerging diagnostic technique is vertical electrical impedance (VEI) testing, which is a nondestructive evaluation technology that quantitatively assesses the cover protection offered to steel reinforcement. Because VEI testing is still a relatively new approach to bridge deck inspection, additional studies are needed to increase the interpretability of VEI data. This thesis increases VEI interpretability with two advances. The first advance, presented in Chapter 2, offers an analytical model for interpreting VEI measurements of …

Detection And Tracking Of Pedestrians Using Doppler Lidar, Xiaoyi Peng, Jie Shan Jul 2021

Detection And Tracking Of Pedestrians Using Doppler Lidar, Xiaoyi Peng, Jie Shan

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Pedestrian detection and tracking is necessary for autonomous vehicles and traffic manage- ment. This paper presents a novel solution to pedestrian detection and tracking for urban scenarios based on Doppler LiDAR that records both the position and velocity of the targets. The workflow consists of two stages. In the detection stage, the input point cloud is first segmented to form clus- ters, frame by frame. A subsequent multiple pedestrian separation process is introduced to further segment pedestrians close to each other. While a simple speed classifier is capable of extracting most of the moving pedestrians, a supervised machine learning-based classifier …

Dynamic Aeroelastic Response Of Stall-Controlled Wind Turbine Rotors In Turbulent Wind Conditions, Sara Jalal, Fernando L. Ponta, Apurva Baruah, Anurag Rajan Jul 2021

Dynamic Aeroelastic Response Of Stall-Controlled Wind Turbine Rotors In Turbulent Wind Conditions, Sara Jalal, Fernando L. Ponta, Apurva Baruah, Anurag Rajan

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

With the current global trend of the wind turbines to be commissioned, the next generation of state-of-the-art turbines will have a generating capacity of 20 MW with rotor diameters of 250 m or larger. This systematic increase in rotor size is prompted by economies-of-scale factors, thereby resulting in a continuously decreasing cost per kWh generated. However, such large rotors have larger masses associated with them and necessitate studies in order to better understand their dynamics. The present work regarding the aeroelastic behavior of stall-controlled rotors involves the study of the frequency content and time evolution of their oscillatory behavior. A …

A Conceptual Framework For Phase-Dependent, Composite Flood Risk Index (Fri) Curves Based On The Relationship Between Temporal Probability Of Flood Occurring (Ph) And Flood Vulnerability Index (Fvi) Along With Maps Of Fvi Within The Amite River Basin Based On The August 2016 Flood., Austin S. Guerin Mr.

LSU Master's Theses

Efforts directed at determining community vulnerability to flooding are limited and only include economic (dollar damages) and public safety impacts and do not consider the phase dependency of the system, i.e., pre-, during- and post-storm, both critical shortcomings for more broadly assessing community risk and developing comprehensive plans and mitigation strategies. This thesis first develops a framework based on a Flood-Vulnerability Index (FVI) approach and then demonstrates its usefulness, at the census tract level of detail, for three parishes in the Greater Baton Rouge, LA area, based on the August 2016 flood. FVI’s indicators are multidimensional and phase dependent: “Pre-Flood” …
