Rapid Computation Of Effective Conductivity Of 2d Composites By Equivalent Circuit And Spectral Methods., Ben J. Ransom, Dean R. Wheeler Aug 2021

Rapid Computation Of Effective Conductivity Of 2d Composites By Equivalent Circuit And Spectral Methods., Ben J. Ransom, Dean R. Wheeler

Faculty Publications

This work presents models for homogenizing or finding the effective transport or mechanical properties of microscale composites formed from highly contrasting phases described on a grid. The methods developed here are intended for engineering applications where speed and geometrical flexibility are a premium. A canonical case that is mathematically challenging and yet can be applied to many realistic materials is a 4-phase 2-dimensional periodic checkerboard or tiling. While analytic solutions for calculating effective properties exist for some cases, versatile methods are needed to handle anisotropic and non-square grids. A reinterpretation and extension of an existing analytic solution that utilizes equivalent …

High-Throughput Discovery Of Novel Cubic Crystal Materials Using Deep Generative Neural Networks, Yong Zhao, Mohammed Al-Fahdi, Ming Hu, Edirisuriya M.D. Siriwardane, Yuqi Song, Alireza Nasiri, Jianjun Hu

Faculty Publications

High-throughput screening has become one of the major strategies for the discovery of novel functional materials. However, its effectiveness is severely limited by the lack of sufficient and diverse materials in current materials repositories such as the open quantum materials database (OQMD). Recent progress in deep learning have enabled generative strategies that learn implicit chemical rules for creating hypothetical materials with new compositions and structures. However, current materials generative models have difficulty in generating structurally diverse, chemically valid, and stable materials. Here we propose CubicGAN, a generative adversarial network (GAN) based deep neural network model for large scale generative design …

First Demonstration Of Orange-Yellow Light Emitter Devices In Ingap/ Inalgap Laser Structure Using A Strain-Induced Quantum Well Intermixing Technique, Bayan A. Alnahhas

Effat Undergraduate Research Journal

In this paper, a novel strain-induced quantum well intermixing (QWI) technique is employed on an InGaP/InAlGaP material system to promote interdiffusion via application of a thick-dielectric encapsulant layer, in conjunction with cycle annealing at elevated temperature. With this technique, we demonstrate the first yellow superluminescent (SLD) at a wavelength of 583nm with a total two-facet output power of ~4.5mW—the highest optical power ever reported at this wavelength in this material system. The demonstration of the yellow SLD without complicated multiquantum barriers to suppress the carrier overflow will have a great impact in realizing the yellow laser diode that cannot be …

The Impact Of Alkali-Ion Intercalation On Redox Chemistry And Mechanical Deformations: Case Study On Intercalation Of Li, Na, And K Ions Into Fepo4 Cathode, Bertan Özdogru, Behrad Koohbor, O. Ozgur Capraz

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Batteries made of charge carriers from Earth-crust abundant materials (e.g., Na, K, and Mg) have received extensive attention as an alternative to Li-ion batteries for grid storage. However, a lack of understanding of the behavior of these larger ions in the electrode materials hinders the development of electrode structures suitable for these large ions. In this study, we investigate the impact of alkali ions (Li, Na, and K) on the redox chemistry and mechanical deformations of iron phosphate composite cathodes by using electrochemical techniques and in situ digital image correlation. Na-ion and Li-ion intercalation demonstrate a nearly linear correlation between …

Evaluating Mine Design Alternatives For Social Risks Using Discrete Choice Analysis, Kwame Awuah-Offei, Sisi Que, Atta Ur Rehman

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As with other engineering design tasks, mine design involves setting design objectives and constraints (the feasible solution space) and finding the optimal design alternative. Mine engineers often struggle to incorporate the preferences of local community members into their evaluation of mine design alternatives because the mining literature lacks tools to quantify such risks during mine planning. This paper presents an approach to evaluate community acceptance (i.e., community preferences for the alternatives) using discrete choice models and decision-based design during mine planning. Using discrete choice models and a rigorous framework, engineers can estimate the cost of social risks as a function …

Infrastructure Deficiency Correlation With Pedestrian/Cyclist Crashes: A Data-Driven Approach, Farbod Tavakkoli Khomeini, Barbara Minsker, Michael Hahler, Janille Smith-Colin, Xinlei Wang

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

A model for identifying the impacts of infrastructure deficiency on road traffic safety is needed to help governments prioritize strategic investments to increase public safety. During the 2010-2019 period, U.S. pedestrian and cyclist fatalities rose by 44% and 36%, respectively, and previous studies have shown a positive correlation between pedestrian/cyclist crashes and low-income areas. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate further the reasons behind the higher probability of pedestrian and cyclist crashes in low-income areas. The proposed hypothesis is that the higher probability of pedestrian and cyclist crashes in low-income areas correlates with higher infrastructure deficiencies …

A Restrained Beam Sub-Model Assembly (Rbsa) For Progressive Collapse Analysis, Muath Alhumaidi Aug 2021

A Restrained Beam Sub-Model Assembly (Rbsa) For Progressive Collapse Analysis, Muath Alhumaidi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The progressive collapse failure mode occurs in buildings when a load-carrying element is lost due to extreme events such as explosions caused by terrorist attacks or vehicular impacts. Guidelines and many researches efforts have been established in order to limit and prevent total collapse of buildings after losing a load-carrying component (e.g., a column). Two famous examples of progressive collapse are the 1968 Ronan Point apartment building kitchen explosion on the 18th floor and the 1995 Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City. Both examples resulted in fatalities and injuries. A small number of these …

Geometrically Complex Planar Heat Exchangers, Derli Dias Do Amaral Junior, Jose Lage

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

In this study, geometrically complex planar heat exchangers, designed in line with the Constructal Law and operating at steady-state, are investigated numerically. The work is divided into two parts, one focusing on diffusion heat transfer in a rectangular plane and another on conjugate diffusion-convection heat transfer in a circular plane heat exchanger.

In the first part, a heat generating rectangular solid volume made of a low conductivity material is cooled through a small, isothermal side-section of the domain. The diffusion cooling process is improved by distributing within the heat generating material a fixed amount of a high conductivity material. The …

Hepatic Cell Mobilization For Protection Against Ischemic Myocardial Injury, Shu Q. Liu, John B. Troy, Chi Hao Luan, Roger J. Guillory Ii

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The heart is capable of activating protective mechanisms in response to ischemic injury to support myocardial survival and performance. These mechanisms have been recognized primarily in the ischemic heart, involving paracrine signaling processes. Here, we report a distant cardioprotective mechanism involving hepatic cell mobilization to the ischemic myocardium in response to experimental myocardial ischemia–reperfusion (MI-R) injury. A parabiotic mouse model was generated by surgical skin-union of two mice and used to induce bilateral MI-R injury with unilateral hepatectomy, establishing concurrent gain- and loss-of-hepatic cell mobilization conditions. Hepatic cells, identified based on the cell-specific expression of enhanced YFP, were found in …

Quantifying Hydrologic Pathway And Source Connectivity Dynamics In Tile Drainage: Implications For Phosphorus Concentrations, Saeid Nazari, William I. Ford, Kevin W. King

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Flowpathways and source water connectivity dynamics are widely recognized to affect tile-drainage water quality. In this study, we developed and evaluated a framework that couples event-based hydrograph recession and specific conductance end-member mixing analysis (SC-EMMA) to provide a more robust framework for quantifying both flow pathway dynamics and source connectivity of drainage water in tile-drained landscapes. High-frequency (30-min) flow and conductivity data were collected from an edge-of-field tile main located in northwestern Ohio, and the newly developed framework was applied for data collected in water year 2019. Multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis was used to evaluate the impact of pathway-connectivity …

Reducing Power During Manufacturing Test Using Different Architectures, Yi Sun Aug 2021

Reducing Power During Manufacturing Test Using Different Architectures, Yi Sun

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Power during manufacturing test can be several times higher than power consumption in functional mode. Excessive power during test can cause IR drop, over-heating, and early aging of the chips. In this dissertation, three different architectures have been introduced to reduce test power in general cases as well as in certain scenarios, including field test.

In the first architecture, scan chains are divided into several segments. Every segment needs a control bit to enable capture in a segment when new faults are detectable on that segment for that pattern. Otherwise, the segment should be disabled to reduce capture power. We …

A Fault-Tolerant Optimal Message Routing Methodology For Cube-Nnected- Les Parallel Computers, Gene Eu Jan, Cheng-Hung Li, Yung-Yuan Chen, Shao-Wei Leu Aug 2021

A Fault-Tolerant Optimal Message Routing Methodology For Cube-Nnected- Les Parallel Computers, Gene Eu Jan, Cheng-Hung Li, Yung-Yuan Chen, Shao-Wei Leu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A cube-connected-cycles (CCC) is a regular graph, suitable for constructing the interconnection network of parallel or multi-node computer systems. The CCC network possesses the features of symmetry, regularity, fault tolerance, and fixed degree of the network. Message delivery through an interconnection network sometimes fails due to processing node and/or link faults or simply because some processors are too busy to handle message transfer. To make a CCC-based parallel computer more resilient to node/link faults, this paper proposes an optimal routing method that guarantees to find a shortest path between the source and the destination nodes within a faulty CCC-based network …

A Novel Signal Processing Approach For Valve Health Condition Classification Of A Reciprocating Compressor With Seeded Faults Considering Time-Frequency Partitions, Yih-Hwang Lin, Wen-Sheng G Lee, Chung-Yung Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study deals with a novel signal processing approach for automated valve condition classification of a reciprocating compressor with seeded faults. The classification system consists of a front end time-frequency analysis platform for the vibration signal measured, fault feature vectors for making the formidable amount of time-frequency data manageable, and a probabilistic neural network for automatic classification without the intervention of human experts. Rather than representing each time-frequency data set with one single feature vector comprising three indices, namely time, frequency, and amplitude, the time-frequency plane is further partitioned into an appropriate number of sub-regions to enhance the characteristics representation …

Semi-Active Vibration Control For Offshore Platforms Based On Lqg Method, Shu-Qing Wang, Ning Li

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The objective of this paper is to mitigate the wave-induced vibration of offshore platform with magneto-rheological (MR) damper. The model of the platform coupled with MR damper is established where the external wave force is approximated with a white noise via a designed filter. Based on Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) method, the optimal control force is determined when taking the measurement noise into account. Semi-active control algorithm is applied to generate the MR damping force by comparing with the optimal control force. Numerical example demonstrates that the semi-active control strategy based on LQG method can reduce the responses of the …

Numerical Stability Analysis For Independent Modal Vibration Suppression Of A Fluid-Conveying Pipe Using A Piezoelectric Inertia Actuator, Yih-Hwang Lin, Jui-Lung Chen, Chih-Liang Chu, Yau-Kun Tsai Aug 2021

Numerical Stability Analysis For Independent Modal Vibration Suppression Of A Fluid-Conveying Pipe Using A Piezoelectric Inertia Actuator, Yih-Hwang Lin, Jui-Lung Chen, Chih-Liang Chu, Yau-Kun Tsai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study deals with numerical stability analysis for independent modal vibration suppression of a fluid-conveying pipe using a piezoelectric inertia actuator (PIA). The stability issue of the approach as proposed by the pioneer developers is addressed. The approach utilizes an infinite control weight for one component of the modal control input and results in a severe control spillover problem for the complex mode controlled, easily leading to closed loop instability even for open loop stable systems. The stability of the system depends on how the left eigenvector is normalized for transforming the original coupled equations to the decoupled ones in …

A Creative Differential Evolution Algorithm For Global Optimization Problems, Hsin-Chuan Kuo, Ching-Hai Lin, Jeun-Len Wu Aug 2021

A Creative Differential Evolution Algorithm For Global Optimization Problems, Hsin-Chuan Kuo, Ching-Hai Lin, Jeun-Len Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Under the framework of the differential evolution algorithm, we develop a creative algorithm by extrapolating the thinking of the garbage can model. The developed algorithm is hence named in the study as a creative differential evolution algorithm (CDE). To verify the performance of the CDE, we selected seven well-known benchmark functions; three of them are uni-modal and four multi-modal. In conducting the numerical experiment, we adopted two different numbers of dimensions for each test function, which is 50 and 100. The results show that CDE can find the global optimum robustly, demonstrate that CDE significantly improves the DE’s performance.

Prediction And Simulation Of Broadband Propeller Noise, Ali Can Takinacı, Tarkan Taralp

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An empirical prediction model of broadband noise for marine propellers is proposed. The model is composed of two components. The first component is the empirical prediction of the frequency domain broadband noise based on a wellestablished lifting surface algorithm providing accurate prediction of the cavitation pattern on the propeller. The second component is the modulation of the noise in the time domain. The two components of the model applied in sequence generate an output yielding a realistic propeller spectrum and audio signature. The propeller noise developed in this study, with the addition of other sources such as machinery and natural …

Scale Effects In Scour Physical-Model Tests: Cause And Alleviation, Yu-Hai Wang, Wei-Guo Jiang, Yan-Hong Wang Aug 2021

Scale Effects In Scour Physical-Model Tests: Cause And Alleviation, Yu-Hai Wang, Wei-Guo Jiang, Yan-Hong Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Scale effect occurs when a prototype hydraulic process is simulated at a laboratory scale due to dissatisfaction of similarity laws. It might lead to considerable deviation when the model scour depth is extrapolated to prototype value. Three popular experimental approaches including predictionequation-targeted flume test, series-model test and similitude-model test are reviewed with emphasis upon their merits and limitations in reducing or alleviating scale effects. Scale laws guiding scour physical-model design are discussed for performing cost-effective model tests. An empirical equation is further derived from data of clear-water pier scour experiments to examine the test results in up-scale extrapolating. It is …

An Assessment Of Job Performance Of Vessel Traffic Service Operators Using An Analytic Hierarchy Process And A Grey Interval Measure, Hsi-Ching Chen, Hua-An Lu, Hsien-Hua Lee Aug 2021

An Assessment Of Job Performance Of Vessel Traffic Service Operators Using An Analytic Hierarchy Process And A Grey Interval Measure, Hsi-Ching Chen, Hua-An Lu, Hsien-Hua Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Operator training is a vital issue for vessel traffic service (VTS), since the International Maritime Organization has adopted the new version of the Guidelines for VTS 1997. Many countries have begun to alter the content of training courses, in order to comply with international standards. However, Taiwan still lacks effective method to assess individual operator’s job performance, capabilities, or the effectiveness of a training program. This study collates the standard training courses to construct an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model and to investigate the relative evaluation weights for all criteria, using the group decision of the principal instructors. Grey interval …

On The Stabilization Of A Class Of Uncertain Systems With Time-Varying Delay Via Vsc Approach, Wen-Jeng Liu Aug 2021

On The Stabilization Of A Class Of Uncertain Systems With Time-Varying Delay Via Vsc Approach, Wen-Jeng Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, the robust stabilization problem for a class of time-delayed multi-input systems with matched and unmatched uncertainties is considered. Here, all the matched uncertainties, unmatched uncertainties and the delay term may be time-varying. Variable structure control (VSC) is suggested to design stabilizing controllers for these uncertain time-delayed multi-input systems. The proposed controllers guarantee the global reaching condition of the sliding mode in these uncertain time-delayed multi-input systems. Further, they ensure that the system trajectories asymptotically converge to the sliding mode. In the sliding mode, the investigated time-delayed systems with matched and unmatched uncertainties still possess the insensitivity to …

Forced Convection Film Condensation Of Downward-Flowing Vapor On Horizontal Tube With Wall Suction Effect, Tong-Bou Chang, Fu-Jen Wang Aug 2021

Forced Convection Film Condensation Of Downward-Flowing Vapor On Horizontal Tube With Wall Suction Effect, Tong-Bou Chang, Fu-Jen Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The heat transfer performance of the condensate layer formed by a downward-flowing, dry saturated vapor flowing over an isothermal horizontal tube with wall suction effects is examined. Under the effects of wall suction, the gravity force, the potential flow pressure gradient, and the interfacial shear stress, the local/mean Nusselt numbers of the condensate film are obtained as a function of the Jakob number Ja, the Prandtl number Pr, the Rayleigh number Ra, the two-phase mean Reynolds number Rev, the dimensionless pressure gradient parameter P, and the suction parameter Sw. The results show that the mean Nusselt number increases with increasing …

An Examination Of The Influence Of Distillation On The Combustion Behavior Of Apparently Equivalent Surrogate Fuels, Jay A. Lefkowitz Aug 2021

An Examination Of The Influence Of Distillation On The Combustion Behavior Of Apparently Equivalent Surrogate Fuels, Jay A. Lefkowitz

Theses and Dissertations

Use of surrogates to emulate the combustion behaviors of prevaporized real fuels has been widely demonstrated in the literature. However, many combustion applications utilize atomized fuel sprays, and for these configurations, the assumption of fuel property homogeneity in prevaporized fuel combustion is tenuous. This work uses a simplified distilling droplet model to demonstrate a real potential for vaporization-coupled deviations from the single-valued combustion property targets used to characterize prevaporized combustion behaviors. To verify the model-based observations, flame blowout measurements from a custom-built annular spray burner rig are measured. Sets of essentially equivalent prevaporized jet fuel and gasoline surrogates suggested in …
