No Ordinary Proteins: Adsorption And Molecular Orientation Of Monoclonal Antibodies, Ankit D. Kanthe, Andrew Ilott, Mary Krause, Songyan Zheng, Jinjiang Li, Wei Bu, Mrinal K. Bera, Binhua Lin, Charles Maldarelli, Raymond S. Tu

Publications and Research

The interaction of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with air/water interfaces plays a crucial role in their overall stability in solution. We aim to understand this behavior using pendant bubble measurements to track the dynamic tension reduction and x-ray reflectivity to obtain the electron density profiles (EDPs) at the surface. Native immunoglobulin G mAb is a rigid molecule with a flat, “Y” shape, and simulated EDPs are obtained by rotating a homology construct at the surface. Comparing simulations with experimental EDPs, we obtain surface orientation probability maps showing mAbs transition from flat-on Y-shape configurations to side-on or end-on configurations with increasing concentration. …

Flow Behavior Of Granular Soil And Impounded Fly Ash Slurries, Nuzhath Fatema Aug 2021

Flow Behavior Of Granular Soil And Impounded Fly Ash Slurries, Nuzhath Fatema

Dissertations - ALL

Failure of an embankment dam around mine tailings and coal ash slurry impoundments typically results in a fast-moving flow of toxic waste that can carry for several miles with disastrous consequence. The most recent catastrophic tailing-dam failure took place on 25 January 2019, at Brumadinho, Brazil, where the resultant tailings flow killed at least 232 people. A similar impoundment failure also occurred in 2008 at the TVA Kingston fossil power plant in Tennessee, USA, where coal combustion residuals such as fly ash and bottom ash were stored in the impoundments. The catastrophic failure at Kingston released 4.2 million m3 of …

A Computational Model For Calcium Signaling In Osteocyte Cell Cultures Under Mechanical Stimulation, Courtney Rose Ogando Aug 2021

A Computational Model For Calcium Signaling In Osteocyte Cell Cultures Under Mechanical Stimulation, Courtney Rose Ogando

Theses - ALL

Bone is a highly complex and organized tissue that is composed of an abundance of cells including the osteocyte. While it is known that osteocytes are responsible for the control of the bone remodeling process and the maintenance of calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis using their network of gap junction connections, their complete role is not yet fully understood. It is also known that various bone related diseases as well as cancer demonstrate an alteration of Ca2+ homeostasis during the progression of the disease. Previous researchers have combined computational modeling with experimental studies to gain a better understanding of cell-to-cell Ca2+ signaling …

The Influence Of Trailing Edge Shape And Kinematics On Bio-Inspired Pitching Panels, Justin Thomas King Aug 2021

The Influence Of Trailing Edge Shape And Kinematics On Bio-Inspired Pitching Panels, Justin Thomas King

Dissertations - ALL

Recently, some engineers have turned to the study of swimming and flying animals to provide insight into the design of vehicles that move through air or water. For certain animals swimming in water, thrust is generated primarily by either a caudal fin or fluke located at the posterior end of the swimmer. It has been argued extensively in the existing research literature that biological propulsors of high aspect ration that also display forked, or lunate, planforms are representative of optimized propulsor geometries with respect to propulsive performance. However, recent experimental and computational work on purely pitching panels has demonstrated that …

Flow Interaction Between Turbomachine Blade Row And Flow Resistance Medium, Tong Lin Aug 2021

Flow Interaction Between Turbomachine Blade Row And Flow Resistance Medium, Tong Lin

Dissertations - ALL

This research investigates the fluid-dynamic interaction between close-coupled axial turbomachines and surrounding components, e.g., heat-exchangers, filters, or cooling fins in high-density computer servers, and its effects on turbomachine and system performance. The importance of this research is that the flow interaction effect occurs in every scenario that requires system compactness.

Firstly, a combined experimental and 3-D computational study on an off-the-shelf server cooling fan is performed, showing that the fan performance has little changed. However, the system performance can be very different since the server cooling has a large hub-to-tip radius ratio, which effectively blocks the high resistance media's (HRM) …

Zinc has the potential for widespread use as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective anode material pending the resolution of rechargeability issues caused by active material loss and shape change. Here, a self-assembled Nafion-coated Celgard 3501 (NC-Celgard) separator is shown to enable unprecedented cycle life of a Zn anode in alkaline electrolyte at high depth-of-discharge (DODZn). Using commercially relevant energy-dense electrodes with high areal capacities of 60 mAh cm–2, Zn–Ni cells tested at 20% DODZn cells achieve over 200 cycles while 50% DODZn cells achieve over 100 cycles before failure. The 20% and 50% DOD …

The formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) in natural and treated water from water supply systems is an urgent research area due to the carcinogenic risk they pose. Seasonal effects and pH have captured interest as potential factors affecting THM formation in the water supply and distribution systems. We investigated THM occurrence in the water supply chain, including raw and treated water from water treatment plants (coagulation, sedimentation, sand filtration, ClO2-disinfection processes, and distribution pipelines) in the Chiang Mai municipality, particularly the educational institute area. The effects of two seasons, rainy (September–November 2019) and dry (December 2019–February 2020), acted as surrogates for …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Repeated traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) cause debilitating effects. Without understanding the acute effects of repeated TBIs, treatment options to halt further degeneration and damage cannot be developed. This study sought to examine the acute effects of blood–brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction, edema, inflammation and behavioral changes after either a single or double TBI using a C57BL/6 mouse model. We examined the effects of one or two TBIs, of either a mild or moderate severity. Double injuries were spaced 7 days apart, and all analysis was performed 24 h post-injury. To examine edema and inflammation, protein levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein …

Some New Results In Distributed Tracking And Optimization, Pranay Sharma Aug 2021

Some New Results In Distributed Tracking And Optimization, Pranay Sharma

Dissertations - ALL

The current age of Big Data is built on the foundation of distributed systems, and efficient distributed algorithms to run on these systems. With the rapid increase in the volume of the data being fed into these systems, storing and processing all this data at a central location becomes infeasible. Such a central \textit{server} requires a gigantic amount of computational and storage resources. Even when it is possible to have central servers, it is not always desirable, due to privacy concerns. Also, sending huge amounts of data to such servers incur often infeasible bandwidth requirements.

In this dissertation, we consider two …

Molecular Interfaces And Heterogeneous Bubble Nucleation From Heated Surfaces At Nanoscale, Manish Gupta Aug 2021

Molecular Interfaces And Heterogeneous Bubble Nucleation From Heated Surfaces At Nanoscale, Manish Gupta

Dissertations - ALL

Heat transfer from a solid surface to fluid occurs in numerous applications, such as boilers, refrigerators, power electronics, etc., and include various underlying phenomena of thin-film evaporation, boiling, condensation, surface wetting, and droplet evaporation. Several studies show that heat transfer can be enhanced significantly by incorporating micro and nanoscale features onto surfaces. Phase change heat transfer plays an important role in dissipating energy from hot surfaces and distributing it to bulk liquid due to high latent heat of liquids. Boiling, a phase change heat transfer phenomenon, happens when the surface is heated to a temperature above the saturation temperature of …

Cfd Analysis Of Subcutaneous Deposition And Dispersion Of Insulin In Adipose Tissue, Ryan C. Lubbers Aug 2021

Cfd Analysis Of Subcutaneous Deposition And Dispersion Of Insulin In Adipose Tissue, Ryan C. Lubbers

Masters Theses

Drug delivery is the most important factor of many therapies, but a lack of technology and research have led to a very generalized understanding of drug kinetics. Insulin pump therapy for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes depends on precise delivery of the hormone into the adipose region between the dermis and underlying muscle. The kinetics of insulin within the adipose tissue environment is not well understood and varies greatly case to case. The use of computation fluid dynamics (CFD) models to study insulin kinetics in relation to influential factors will lead to a better understanding of the characteristics of …

Multiple Uav Adaptive Navigation For Three-Dimensional Scalar Fields, Robert K. Lee, Christopher A. Kitts, Michael A. Neumann, Robert T. Mcdonald Aug 2021

Multiple Uav Adaptive Navigation For Three-Dimensional Scalar Fields, Robert K. Lee, Christopher A. Kitts, Michael A. Neumann, Robert T. Mcdonald

Mechanical Engineering

Adaptive Navigation (AN) control strategies allow an agent to autonomously alter its trajectory based on realtime measurements of the environment. Compared to conventional navigation methods, these techniques can reduce required time and energy to explore scalar characteristics of unknown and dynamic regions of interest (e.g., temperature, concentration level). Multiple Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) approaches to AN can improve performance by exploiting synchronized spatially-dispersed measurements to generate realtime information regarding the structure of the local scalar field, which is then used to inform navigation decisions. This article presents initial results of a comprehensive program to develop, verify, and experimentally implement mission-level …
