Virtual Power Plant Control For Large Residential Communities Using Hvac Systems For Energy Storage, Huangjie Gong, Evan S. Jones, Rosemary E. Alden, Andrew G. Frye, Donald G. Colliver, Dan M. Ionel

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems use the most electricity of any household appliance in residential communities. HVAC system modeling facilitates the study of demand response (DR) at both the residential and power system levels. In this article, the equivalent thermal model of a reference house is proposed. Parameters for the reference house were determined based on the systematic study of experimental data obtained from fully instrumented field demonstrators. Energy storage capacity of HVAC systems is calculated and an equivalent state-of-charge is defined. The uniformity between HVAC systems and battery energy storage system is demonstrated by DR control. The aggregated …

Customizable Aptamer Transducer Network Designed For Feed-Forward Coupling, Tim Hachigian, Drew Lysne, Elton Graugnard, Jeunghoon Lee

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Solution-based biosensors that utilize aptamers have been engineered in a variety of formats to detect a range of analytes for both medical and environmental applications. However, since aptamers have fixed base sequences, incorporation of aptamers into DNA strand displacement networks for feed-forward signal amplification and processing requires significant redesign of downstream DNA reaction networks. We designed a novel aptamer transduction network that releases customizable output domains, which can then be used to initiate downstream strand displacement reaction networks without any sequence redesign of the downstream reaction networks. In our aptamer transducer (AT), aptamer input domains are independent of output domains …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have a wide range of applications but face challenges in harsh working or operating environments at high temperatures. In this work, a solid polymer electrolyte with MWCNT-COOH as an additive (MWCNT-SPE) was obtained. MWCNT-SPE has a high thermal stability and can be used in high-temperature operating environments. Solid-state lithium batteries based on MWCNT-SPE and LiFePO4 were assembled. The resulting lithium batteries exhibited excellent electrochemical properties at 70 and 120 °C, demonstrating a wide range of operations suitable for solid-state batteries with extreme demands. The symmetrical Li/MWCNT-SPE/Li cell operated for 1800 h with low polarization voltage …

Tailoring Plasmon Excitations In Alpha − T 3 Armchair Nanoribbons, Andrii Iurov, Liubov Zhemchuzhna, Godfrey Gumbs, Danhong Huang, Paula Fekete, Farhana Anwar, Dipendra Dahal, Nicholas Weekes

Publications and Research

We have calculated and investigated the electronic states, dynamical polarization function and the plasmon excitations for α − T 3 nanoribbons with armchair-edge termination. The obtained plasmon dispersions are found to depend significantly on the number of atomic rows across the ribbon and the energy gap which is also determined by the nanoribbon geometry. The bandgap appears to have the strongest effect on both the plasmon dispersions and their Landau damping. We have determined the conditions when relative hopping parameter α of an α − T 3 lattice has a strong effect on the plasmons which makes our material distinguished …

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In this thesis, we address the problem of prolonging the battery life of Internet of Things (IoT) nodes by introducing a smart energy harvesting framework for IoT networks supported by femtocell access points (FAPs) based on the principles of Contract Theory and Reinforcement Learning. Then, Contract Theory is adopted to capture the interactions among the FAPs, who provide personalized rewards, i.e., charging power, to the IoT nodes to incentivize them to invest their effort, i.e., transmission power, to report their data …

Nonvolatile Resistive Switching Memory Based On Monosaccharide Fructose Film, Yuan Xing, Brandon Sueoka, Kuan Yew Cheong, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we report resistive random-access memory (RRAM) based on a monosaccharide—fructose for nonvolatile memory in biocompatible and "green" electronics. Fructose thin film acts as the resistive switching layer with Al and Ag top electrodes for comparison. Both devices demonstrated highly reproducible nonvolatile bipolar resistive switching behaviors with a large on/off ratio of ∼106 for the Al electrode and ∼105 for the Ag electrode. The forming voltage, set voltage, and memory window are also larger for the Al electrode than the Ag electrode, but the reset voltages are comparable. Dominant conduction mechanisms of fructose films were proposed. …

Parameter Estimation And Application Of Anisotropic Yield Criteria For Cylindrical Aluminum Extrusions: Theoretical Developments And Stereodic Measurements, Farzana Yasmeen, Michael A. Sutton, Xiaomin Deng, Megan Ryan, Anthony P. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Theoretical and experimental studies are presented to characterize the anisotropic plastic response under torsion loading of two nominally identical aluminum Al6061-T6 extruded round bars. Theoretical models are developed using isotropic (Von Mises 1913) and anisotropic (Barlat 1991) yield criteria, along with isotropic strain hardening formulae, to model post-yield behavior under simple torsion loading. For the case of simple shear loading, incremental plasticity theory is used to determine the theoretical elastic, plastic, and total shear strains. A set of experiments are performed to calibrate Barlat’s 1991 yield function. Several specimens are extracted at different orientations to the longitudinal direction of each …

Constructing Frameworks For Task-Optimized Visualizations, Ghulam Jilani Abdul Rahim Quadri Oct 2021

Constructing Frameworks For Task-Optimized Visualizations, Ghulam Jilani Abdul Rahim Quadri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Visualization is crucial in today’s data-driven world to augment and enhance human understanding and decision-making. Effective visualizations must support accuracy in visual task performance and expressive data communication. Effective visualization design depends on the visual channels used, chart types, or visual tasks. However, design choices and visual judgment are co-related, and effectiveness is not one-dimensional, leading to a significant need to understand the intersection of these factors to create optimized visualizations. Hence, constructing frameworks that consider both design decisions and the task being performed enables optimizing visualization design to maximize efficacy. This dissertation describes experiments, techniques, and user studies to …
