Post-Processing Precise Point Positioning Solutions With Parameter Optimization, Maria A. Gonzalez Castaneda Jan 2022

Post-Processing Precise Point Positioning Solutions With Parameter Optimization, Maria A. Gonzalez Castaneda

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technique can offer position solutions with centimeter-level accuracy by fusing precise satellite orbits and clocks with un-differenced, dual-frequency, pseudo-range, and carrier-phase observables. PPP presents a compelling alternative to Differential Global Positioning Systems, with the benefit that it only requires a single receiver and does not require simultaneous observations from many stations, making it appealing for ongoing research on hydro-graphic survey applications. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been working on a buoy system tracked with a Global Positioning Systems receiver and Inertial Measurement Unit sensor using the PPP technique. In the interest of obtaining accurate …

Pathfinding Fast Radio Bursts Localizations Using Very Long Baseline Interferometry, Pranav Rohit Sanghavi Jan 2022

Pathfinding Fast Radio Bursts Localizations Using Very Long Baseline Interferometry, Pranav Rohit Sanghavi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration, bright radio transients of extragalactic origin. The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) telescope’s CHIME/FRB instrument and other radio telescopes across the globe have detected hundreds of FRBs. Their origins are a mystery. Precise localization within the host is critical to distinguish between progenitor models. This can be achieved through Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Until now, VLBI localizations have only been carried out in targeted follow-up observations of some repeating sources which comprise a small fraction of the FRBs.

For this work, an interferometric array of 6m dishes was constructed at the Green …

Advanced Process Modeling And Optimization Of Amine-Based Carbon Capture Process, Paul Jide Terhemba Akula

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With the rise of carbondioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere to more than 400 parts per million (ppm), research efforts have been focused on achieving net-zero carbon emission technologies. Post-combustion CO2 capture (PCC) is a key strategy in reducing CO2 emissions. Amine-based CO2 capture is the baseline technology for retrofitting existing power stations. However, the integration of amine-based PCC technology with power plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions incurs a high energy penalty, decreasing a powerplant’s efficiency by about 23 percentage points. Understanding the capture plant dynamics plays an important role in its technical and economic performance. Rigorous models are …

Development Of An Entry-Scale Modeling Methodology To Provide Ground Reaction Curves For Longwall Gateroad Support Evaluation, Haochen Zhao Jan 2022

Development Of An Entry-Scale Modeling Methodology To Provide Ground Reaction Curves For Longwall Gateroad Support Evaluation, Haochen Zhao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Longwall gateroad entries are generally subjected to severe mining-induced stress changes and deformations; they are prone to large roof falls, floor heaves, and rib sloughing. The standing support system in underground mines needs to be carefully designed to compensate for the mining-induced deformation of the surrounding rock mass and consecutively protect the integrity of gateroad entries. Local geology, together with mining-induced stress redistribution, influences the ground response and plays a major role in the performance of a standing support design. In the US, Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) and its Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) design criteria have been applied to …

Development And Verification Of Flight Data Informed Performance Estimation And Prediction Simulation Tool For Small Electrical Multi-Rotor Uav, Nicholas Scott Borelle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While small scale multi-rotor aircraft are becoming an increasingly large market with applications emerging every day, their ability to have both a high endurance/long range and a high speed/performance flight is severely limited. This leads to uncertainty in mission planning and aircraft design, specifically when deciding mission length and available on-board energy. Uncertainty like this leads to an increased chance of failure to complete the mission, and a failure to recover the aircraft. Considering that these aircraft are used by everyone from hobbyists to commercial companies to military personnel, the applications and missions being flown carry importance and a serious …

Face Recognition With Attention Mechanisms, Qiangchang Wang Jan 2022

Face Recognition With Attention Mechanisms, Qiangchang Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Face recognition has been widely used in people’s daily lives due to its contactless process and high accuracy. Existing works can be divided into two categories: global and local approaches. The mainstream global approaches usually extract features on whole faces. However, global faces tend to suffer from dramatic appearance changes under the scenarios of large pose variations, heavy occlusions, and so on. On the other hand, since some local patches may remain similar, they can play an important role in such scenarios. Existing local approaches mainly rely on cropping local patches around facial landmarks and then extracting corresponding local representations. …

Nano-, Encapsulated Manganese Oxide (Nemo) Particles For Mri Enhancement In Microfluidic Tumor Models, Kasey Alexis Freshwater

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Breast cancer is among the deadliest cancers in women, with approximately 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths reported globally in 2020 alone. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is commonly used to diagnose, stage, and develop treatment plans for patients predisposed to breast cancer. However, current MRI-based screening of breast cancer has high false-positive rates up to 25%, leading to unnecessary invasive follow-up screening and testing. The gold-standard intravenous gadolinium (Gd)-based contrast agents (GBCAs) account for false-positive rates because they are always “ON”, providing a constant MRI signal that highlights both benign and malignant tumors. The work detailed in this thesis …

Reinforcement learning (RL) is a machine learning method that has recently seen significant research activity owing to its successes in the areas of robotics and gameplaying (Silver et al., 2017). However, significant challenges exist in the extension of these control methods to process control problems, where state and input signals are nearly always continuous and more stringent performance guarantees are required. The goal of this work is to explore ways that modern RL algorithms can be adapted to handle process control problems; avenues for this work include using RL with existing controllers such as model predictive control (MPC) and adapting …

Low-Temperature Hot Corrosion Of Boilers In The Coal-Fired Power Plant, Artem Gavrilev Jan 2022

Low-Temperature Hot Corrosion Of Boilers In The Coal-Fired Power Plant, Artem Gavrilev

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Hot corrosion of materials has remained a relevant topic since its introduction in the second half of the 20th century as gas turbine engines suffered severe corrosion during operation over seawater. Hot corrosion is observed in a multitude of high temperature components, such as gas turbines, power plants, refineries, fluidized bed combustion systems, pipelines, and industrial waste incinerators.

Hot corrosion experiments in the laboratory have been conducted under constant temperatures of interest, while in the actual working conditions of coal-fired power plants, boiler tubes are cooled down via water cooling from a relatively high fireside temperature, e.g., 1000°C. To investigate …

Ecological Restoration Of Lead/Zinc/Copper Mine Tailings: Phytomanagement And Amendment Strategies To Enhance Substrate Functionality And Biomass Production, Mariam K. Al-Lami Jan 2022

Ecological Restoration Of Lead/Zinc/Copper Mine Tailings: Phytomanagement And Amendment Strategies To Enhance Substrate Functionality And Biomass Production, Mariam K. Al-Lami

Doctoral Dissertations

“The extreme physiochemical characteristics of mine tailings inhibit microbial processes and natural plant growth. Consequently, vast and numerous tailings sites remain barren for decades and highly susceptible to wind and water erosion. Phytostabilization is a cost-effective and ecologically productive remediation approach; however, tailings revegetation is generally challenging and must often be assisted with appropriate soil amendments. Amendments applied individually in greenhouse studies discussed herein revealed notable improvement in bioenergy crops growth only with biosolids treatments. Recalcitrant carbon amendments (biochar and humus) showed notable impact only on tailings physichochemical and hydraulic properties. Nevertheless, biosolids may not support sustained vegetation due to …

Doctoral Dissertations

“The role of cobalt in trivalent chromium passivations (TCPs) to improve corrosion resistance of γ-ZnNi coated steel and aluminum is based on its effect on hexavalent chromium content in the passive layer. Investigations of both a cobalt-containing and cobalt-free TCP on SAE 1008 steel indicated that both passivations protect well for up to 1000 hours in neutral salt spray exposure (SSE). A repetition on Al 6061-T6 alloy indicated that TCP performed much better than cobalt-free TCP implicating the underlying substrate. Optical and electron micrographs indicated physical changes such as crack thickness, crack density, passivation porosity, and passivation thickness existed between …

Modeling Strategy For Emi Filter And Flyback Transformer, Ruijie He Jan 2022

Modeling Strategy For Emi Filter And Flyback Transformer, Ruijie He

Doctoral Dissertations

“The switch-mode power supply is key to miniaturizing power adapters. However, the switching nature of the circuit introduces issues in conducted emissions. In a flyback converter, the transformer serves as the path for common mode current flowing from the primary side to the secondary side. Different winding technologies have been invented and implemented to reduce the capacitance between the primary side and the secondary side. But the repeatability of the winding is still poor due to the fluctuations of the winding machine. Thus, the resulting conducted emission has a fluctuation that can lead to failure in the compliance tests. EMI …

To validate the novel binder, satisfying mix performance tests were …

The Kanarra Fold-Thrust System -- The Leading Edge Of The Sevier Fold-Thrust Belt, Southwest Utah, William Joseph Michael Chandonia Jan 2022

The Kanarra Fold-Thrust System -- The Leading Edge Of The Sevier Fold-Thrust Belt, Southwest Utah, William Joseph Michael Chandonia

Doctoral Dissertations

“The Jurassic to Eocene Sevier fold-thrust belt is the subject of continued scientific curiosity in tectonics, stratigraphy, and industry. Understanding its development in southwest Utah is hindered in part due to the multiple origins proposed for the Kanarra anticline, a major leading edge structure -- a drag fold along the Hurricane fault, Laramide monocline, Sevier fault propagation fold, or a combination of these -- which have confused its tectonic significance and regional context. This confusion results from the structural complexity of its exposed eastern limb, as well as displacement and burial of its crest and western limb beneath Neogene sediments …

Characterizing And Modeling Methods For Power Converters, Anfeng Huang Jan 2022

Characterizing And Modeling Methods For Power Converters, Anfeng Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

“Stable power delivery is becoming increasingly important in modern electronic devices, especially in applications with stringent requirements of its form factor. With the evolution of technology, the switching frequency in a power converter is pushed to a higher frequency range, e.g., several MHz or even higher, to decrease its size. However, the loss generated in the converter increases drastically due to the high switching frequency. In addition, a wide-band feedback controller is required to accommodate the high switching frequency in the converter. We focus on the characterization or modeling of the feedback control circuits and critical components in a switching …

In this study, two comprehensive reviews have been conducted to identify the gaps between lab and current simulations for in-situ polymer treatment and preformed particle gel treatment, separately.

Based on the identified gaps, the effect of a few major factors which are very important …

Depression Of Pyrite In Polymetallic Sulfide Flotation Using Chitosan-Grafted-Polyacrylamide Polymers, Keitumetse Cathrine Monyake Jan 2022

Depression Of Pyrite In Polymetallic Sulfide Flotation Using Chitosan-Grafted-Polyacrylamide Polymers, Keitumetse Cathrine Monyake

Doctoral Dissertations

“In this work, Chitosan-grafted-Polyacrylamides (Chi-g-PAMs) were studied, for the first time, as selective depressants of pyrite in the flotation of base metal sulfides. Fundamental studies of the adsorption behavior of Chi-g-PAM on model sulfide minerals indicated that Chi-g-PAM was more selective to pyrite’s surfaces as compared to base metal sulfides. Results suggested that the adsorption of Chi-g-PAM at pyrite-water interface was a chemisorption in nature which involved the amine, amide, and hydroxyl groups of Chi-g-PAM. Batch flotation studies of complex sulfide ore of Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) showed that Chi-g-PAM outperformed other pyrite’s depressants at producing less pyrite-diluted concentrates. Statistical …

“Additive manufacturing (AM) and laser-aided machining and polishing (LAMP) of materials are emerging manufacturing processes both for research and industrial sectors. The AM process can manufacture near-net-shape parts with complex geometries. Meanwhile, the LAMP process integrated with an AM system offers a high processing rate, minimum heat-affected zone, and easily adjustable process parameters during machining and polishing. In mechanical properties characterization of AM metals and alloys, fatigue is a vitally important test method to understand the behavior of materials in cycling loading and unloading circumstances since most mechanical failures of structures are due to fatigue. To characterize AM metal fatigue …

Investigation Of The Thermodynamics Of Iron Phosphate Melts And Stability Of Iron Phosphate Glasses: Effects Of Composition And Iron Redox Ratio, Melodie Linda Schmitt Jan 2022

Investigation Of The Thermodynamics Of Iron Phosphate Melts And Stability Of Iron Phosphate Glasses: Effects Of Composition And Iron Redox Ratio, Melodie Linda Schmitt

Doctoral Dissertations

“Iron phosphate glasses with Fe/P = 0.33 - 0.67, O/P = 3.0 - 3.5 and Fe2+/ΣFe = 0.16- 0.52 were prepared by altering batch compositions and melt conditions. Thermal analyses indicate polyphosphate glasses with intermediate chain lengths are most stable against devitrification. Heterogeneous crystallization occurs on the glass surface and is dependent on iron valence state, particle size, heating rate, temperature and oxygen availability in the atmosphere. Oxidation of ferrous iron on the glass surface occurs at temperatures as low as Tg, and thus crystallization behavior and stability can be altered via post-melt heat treatments. A novel preparation …

Advances And Applications In High-Dimensional Heuristic Optimization, Samuel Alexander Vanfossan Jan 2022

Advances And Applications In High-Dimensional Heuristic Optimization, Samuel Alexander Vanfossan

Doctoral Dissertations

“Applicable to most real-world decision scenarios, multiobjective optimization is an area of multicriteria decision-making that seeks to simultaneously optimize two or more conflicting objectives. In contrast to single-objective scenarios, nontrivial multiobjective optimization problems are characterized by a set of Pareto optimal solutions wherein no solution unanimously optimizes all objectives. Evolutionary algorithms have emerged as a standard approach to determine a set of these Pareto optimal solutions, from which a decision-maker can select a vetted alternative. While easy to implement and having demonstrated great efficacy, these evolutionary approaches have been criticized for their runtime complexity when dealing with many alternatives or …

Characterization And Modeling Of Esd Events, Risk And Protection, Jianchi Zhou Jan 2022

Characterization And Modeling Of Esd Events, Risk And Protection, Jianchi Zhou

Doctoral Dissertations

“The ESD (Electrostatic discharge) failures have been raising critical reliability problems in electronic devices design. However, not all the ESD scenarios have been specified by the IEC standard and the characterizations of the ESD risk for different scenarios are essential to evaluate the ESD robustness of the devices in the real word.

The insulation of plastic enclosures provides protection against ESD to the electronic system inside. However, seams between plastic parts are often unavoidable. Different plastic arrangements are constructed to investigate the spark length and current derivatives and to understand the ESD spark behavior for geometries having spark lengths longer …
