Simulation Study Of A Probabilistic Measurement Terminator For Cloud Radar Systems Using Cloudsat Data, Jakob Delong, Joel T. Johnson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a novel probabilistic method that is used to identify low-SNR measurements in a cloud profiling radar application and terminate them before completion to save resources. The method uses a statistical model to predict the final SNR level of a measurement in progress and terminate it if it falls below a specified threshold at a specified level of confidence. The method is applied in a simulation study in which radar backscattered power profiles are obtained from CloudSat radar data, and is shown to achieve favorable performance.

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
High-power laser systems (HPLS) have wide-ranging applications in many prominent areas. HPLS use laser diodes to pump fiber gain media. Understanding the functionality of both components is critical for achieving effective HPLS operation. System optical efficiency is a function of diode junction temperature. As junction temperature changes, the wavelength spectrum of the diode output shifts causing optical power losses in the fiber gain media. Optical/thermal interactions of the dynamically coupled laser diodes and fiber gain media are not fully understood. A system level modeling approach considering the interactions between optical performance and component temperature is necessary. Four distinct models were …

With frequent weeding being a tedious chore and an essential task for a successful garden, there is need for an automated method of handling this routine. Existing technologies utilize computer vision, GPS, multiple units and other tools to remove weeds from garden plots. However, these solutions are often complex and expensive, suited for large agricultural plots in contrast to small-scale home gardens. In addition, many of these technologies, along with manual tillers and cultivators suited for home use, are unable to perform weeding within rows of crops in a process known as intra-row weeding. The Garden Bot is an autonomous, …
Designing A Distillation Process For A Local Brewery, Julia Syme
Designing A Distillation Process For A Local Brewery, Julia Syme
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Proper distillation of spirits is key in maximizing resource value and producing a consumable liquid. A local brewery owner is considering entering the distilling market, and he requested information regarding a small-scale continuous column. This project used CHEMCAD to determine an operating design for continuous distillation of ethanol at a few different feed compositions. Since this model was limited to CHEMCAD, it had to build off of previous research and engineering parameters without an experimental verification. The project determined that an eight stage distillation column produced 40-58% ethanol product when the feed ranged from 7.5-12% ethanol. Eight stages produced even …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This research is about securing control of those devices we most depend on for integrity and confidentiality. An emerging concern is that complex integrated circuits may be subject to exploitable defects or backdoors, and measures for inspection and audit of these chips are neither supported nor scalable. One approach for providing a “supply chain firewall” may be to forgo such components, and instead to build central processing units (CPUs) and other complex logic from simple, generic parts. This work investigates the capability and speed ceiling when open-source hardware methodologies are fused with maker-scale assembly tools and visible-scale final inspection.
