Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interface With Superhalogen-Based Double Antiperovskite Li6os(Bh4)2 Materials For Dentrite-Free And Stable Lithium Metal Batteries, Gazi Mahfujul Alam
Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interface With Superhalogen-Based Double Antiperovskite Li6os(Bh4)2 Materials For Dentrite-Free And Stable Lithium Metal Batteries, Gazi Mahfujul Alam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lithium (Li) metal is regarded as the most propitious anode material for next-generation battery technologies owing to its incredibly high theoritical capacity (3860 mAh g-1) and the most negative electrochemical equilibrium potential (-3.04 V vs standard hydrogen electrode). However, the practical implementation of Li anode in commercial lithium batteries is severely inhibited by the unstable solid liquid interfaces resulting from the ultrahigh reactivity, which leads to dendrite growth, low coulombic efficiency, extreme volume fluctuation, and even safety concerns. For a stable and efficient lithium anode to build next generation Li metal battery, in this thesis, we have tried to solve …

Use Of Human–Computer Interaction Devices And Web 3.0 Skills Among Engineers, Dr. Robbie L. Walker
Use Of Human–Computer Interaction Devices And Web 3.0 Skills Among Engineers, Dr. Robbie L. Walker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite massive company investments in human–computer interaction devices and software, such as Web 3.0 technologies, engineers are not demonstrating measurable performance and productivity increases. There is a lack of knowledge and understanding related to the motivation of engineers to use Web 3.0 technologies including the semantic web and cloud applications for increased performance. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to investigate whether the use of human–computer interaction devices predict Web 3.0 skills among engineers. Solow’s information technology productivity paradox was the theoretical foundation for this study. Convenience sampling was used for a sample of 214 participants from metropolitan …

Onboard detection and tracking capability are integral to the sensing component in collision avoidance systems needed to safely operate autonomous urban air taxis and small Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Ground-based validation of detection and tracking systems is an important milestone towards the end goal of real-time collision avoidance using onboard sensors and algorithms. In this work, we evaluate three Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based fusion trackers with radar and vision detection inputs, and compare them with baseline trackers for each sensor type. Performance is assessed using field collected data of ground to air test flights with the sensors co-located on a …

This work investigated the role of sucrose and cationic dispersant (1‐hexadecyl)trimethylammonium bromide concentration on ice‐templated sintered lithium titanate microstructure and compressive strength, to enable a comprehensive understanding of composition selection and elucidate processing–microstructure–mechanical property relationships. Sucrose and dispersant concentrations were varied to change total solute concentration in suspensions and viscosity. Dispersant was more effective in reducing viscosity than sucrose; however, their combination had an even greater impact on reducing viscosity. Based on viscosity measurements, a total of 12 suspension compositions were developed, and materials were fabricated at two different freezing front velocity (FFV) regimes. Solute concentration greatly influenced ice‐templated microstructure …

A Review On Heat Flux Measurement Techniques In The Nano And Microscale, Miguel Moreno
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Heat Flux measurements represent an important step in obtaining an accurate heat transfer profile in many engineering problems. Sensors capable of measuring this quantity have been around for decades, however, the increasing focus in nano and microscale applications in the industry and academia demands more accurate and smaller devices. This paper reviews some of the methods used to develop heat flux meters targeted to nano and microscale, as well as some calibration processes for the same. A combination of Luminescence and non-luminescence methods for direct and indirect measurement of heat flux will be discussed. A glimpse of what the future …

Optimizing The Fabrication Process For Next Generation Nano-Textured Solar Cells With High Conversion Efficiency Using Industrially Viable Solar Cell Processes, Orlagh Murphy
Masters
The need for photovoltaic (PV) cells with high conversion efficiency and low surface reflectance has been on the rise. With this in mind, the fabrication process of PV cells has been investigated with interest in the surface etching phase in order to reduce surface reflectance using nanotexturing. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how to improve the etching phase by optimising the key parameters for an atmospheric dry etch (ADE) with different processes to determine which can aid in reducing surface reflectance.
To obtain a process which provides a low surface reflectance, parameters in the etching phase are …

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used in numerous fields owing to their intrinsic strength to weight ratio and various design benefits. However, these materials are prone to environmental aging, particularly moisture absorption. In essence, absorbed moisture infiltrates the polymer matrix and induces changes in the polymer network through chain scission, plasticization, and other bonding interactions. This causes irreversible damages to the material and significantly decreases mechanical strength. In this study, Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) has been used to identify the absorption mechanisms in glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites by detecting the related polarization mechanisms. Here, results show …

Dielectric Analysis To Predict Moisture Absorption In Structural Composites: A Data-Driven Approach, Partha Pratim Das, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Due to continual exposure to moist environment, environmental degradation is a major threat to structural composites throughout their service life. Impedance Spectroscopy (IS)/Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) is a reliable nondestructive method that has been used in polymer industries for dielectric characterization of material. While moisture absorption causes irreversible changes in the polymer matrix composites, it also alters the electrical properties of the system which is detectable using BbDS. Since the physics that drives the change in electrical characteristics is driven by the modifications imposed by water molecules (whether free or bound), both events can be linked. A dielectric spectrum over …

Coupled Effects In Dielectric And Thermal Properties Of Polymer Matrix Composite Structures Due To Moisture Absorption, Partha Pratim Das, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Kenneth Reifsnider, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used in number of fields including aerospace, marine, sports, medical, power sectors, etc. due to their lightweight nature while retaining high mechanical performance in terms of high specific strength, stiffness, and great fatigue properties. However, the applicability of these materials is restricted by their stability up to a certain temperature (i.e. glass transition temperature) and environmental degradation (i.e. moisture, UV light, etc.). Moisture ingression greatly reduces their mechanical properties altering material structure by causing polymer plasticization, chain scission and fiber-polymer interface deterioration. These changes instantaneously affect the thermal properties of the materials which …

The Effect Of Plasma Treatment On The Cure Behavior Of Out-Of-Life Prepregs And An Investigation Of The Mechanical Properties Of Composite Parts Manufactured From Plasma-Treated Prepregs, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Partha Pratim Das, Minhazur Rahman, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Many industries, including aircraft, automobiles, and marine, are using prepreg (pre-impregnated fibers and a partially cured polymer matrix) to manufacture composite parts to achieve optimum fiber and resin volume ratio and part repeatability. Since prepregs have a short out oflife (i.e., the maximum storing time allowed at room temperature), they must be stored in refrigerators at low temperatures, which, if not maintained, have an unfavorable influence on the intended quality of the final product. For the present study, glass/epoxy prepregs (expired out-life) were plasmatreated before being used to make the composite part to compensate for the room temperature aging effect. …

Robust Control Strategies For Optimal Operation Of Distributed Generation In Smart Microgrids, Chi-Thang Phan-Tan
Theses
The high penetration of PV systems and fast communications networks increase the potential for PV inverters to support the stability and performance of smart grids and microgrids. PV inverters in the distribution network can work cooperatively and follow centralized and decentralized control commands to optimize energy production while meeting grid code requirements. However, there are older autonomous inverters that have already been installed and will operate in the same network as smart controllable ones. This research proposes a decentralized optimal control (DOC) that performs multi-objective optimization for a group of PV inverters in a network of existing residential loads and …
Model-Based Cognitive Communications For Low-Power Wireless Networks, Indika Sanjeewa Abeywickrama Dhanapala
Model-Based Cognitive Communications For Low-Power Wireless Networks, Indika Sanjeewa Abeywickrama Dhanapala
Theses
Our world is increasingly being instrumented with low-power wireless networks that deliver data for diverse application domains such as energy management, health and well-being, security, and other Internet of Things services. As these wireless networks operate in the unlicensed radio spectrum while co-existing with various other communication networks, their communication reliability and energy efficiency are affected by the radio environment. Because of this vulnerability to radio interference, low-power wireless networks may be unable to deliver their application requirements and be inefficiently consuming energy, functioning as a low-dependability network. The situation is exacerbated in indoor environments such as office and residential …

Residual stresses developed during additive manufacturing (AM) can influence the mechanical performance of structural components in their intended applications. In this study, thermomechanical residual stress simulations of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process are conducted for both simplified (plate and cube-shaped) geometries as well as five complex lattice geometries fabricated with Inconel 718. These simulations are conducted with the commercial software package Simufact Additive©, which uses a non-linear finite element analysis and layer-by-layer averaging approach in determining residual stresses. To verify the efficacy of the Simufact Additive© simulations, numerical results for the plate and cube-shape geometries are analyzed for …

The many iterations needed to explore a design space in the conceptual design process preclude the use of time-consuming RANS CFD for all but a few flight conditions. This research focuses on identifying the level of fidelity needed to adequately predict the aerothermodynamic characteristics of hypersonic vehicles. Three tools with differing levels of fidelity – CBAERO, Cart3D, and Kestrel – were used to analyze the Generic Hypersonic Vehicle (GHV) at the design condition of Mach 5.85 and an off-design condition of Mach 4.5. The results are representative of the different design tools but are not definitive due to the mesh …

Repairing airfoil blades is necessary to extend the life of turbine engines. Directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing (AM) provides the ability to add material at a specific location on an existing component. In this work, AM repairs on Ti-6Al-4V airfoil blades were analyzed to determine what effect the repair will have on the blade performance in high cycle vibration fatigue testing. Targeted sections were cut out of airfoil blades near high stress locations and repaired using DED. To understand the defects that arose with this type of repair, computed tomography imaging was used to quantify the defects from the …
Landmark Enforcement And Principal Component Analysis For Improving Gan-Based Morphing, Samuel W. Price
Landmark Enforcement And Principal Component Analysis For Improving Gan-Based Morphing, Samuel W. Price
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Facial Recognition Systems (FRSs) are a key target for adversaries determined to circumvent security checkpoints. Morph images threaten FRS by presenting as multiple individuals, allowing an adversary to swap identities with another subject. Although morph generation using generative adversarial networks (GANs) results in high-quality morphs without possessing the spatial artifacts caused by landmarkbased methods, there is an apparent loss in identity with standard GAN-based morphing methods. In this thesis, we examine landmark-based and GAN-based morphing methods to fuse the advantages of both methodologies. We propose a novel StyleGAN2 morph generation technique by introducing a landmark enforcement method. Considering this method, …

Performance Enhancement Of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes By Electronic Doping, David A. Shelhammer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since the invention of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) nearly 40 years ago, significant effort has been put into realizing their full potential. OLEDs exhibit several properties that make them ideal candidates for applications in displays as well as solid-state lighting: low power consumption, high contrast ratios, mechanical flexibility, and wide viewing angles. However, the low electrical conductivity and poor stability of organic materials remain critical factors that limit device performance. The focus of this work is OLED performance improvement through the introduction of novel inorganic dopants into organic charge transport layers. The results show a significant reduction in operating voltage …

Graphene has generated substantial interest as a filler due to its exceptional strength, flexibility, and conductivity but faces obstacles in supply and implementation. A renewable, plant-based graphene nanoparticle (pGNP) presents a more accessible filler with the same properties as mineral graphenes. In this study, we examine the effects of pGNP, which was sprayed on a carbon fiber/epoxy prepreg at loadings from 1.1 to 4.2 g/m2. The study considered the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of pGNP-composite. An even particle dispersion was achieved using a spray application of pGNP in a water/alcohol suspension with the addition of surfactants and …

Lashing and de-lashing operations of containers cargo on board containerships are considered as quite strenuous activities in which operators are required to work continuously over a 6 or 8 hours shift with very limited break. This is mostly because containerships need to leave the port as soon as possible and containers loading and unloading operations must be executed with very high productivity (stay moored in a port is a totally unproductive time for a ship and a loss-making business for a shipping company). Operators performing lashing and de-lashing operations are subjected to intense ergonomic stress and uncomfortable working postures. To …

In the aftermath of a catastrophic weather event, housing recovery and reconstruction activities are highly complex. Coordinating housing recovery activities is generally challenging because complex supply chains converge simultaneously in a highly uncertain environment. In this environment, anticipating and quantifying the extent of potential damage and determining the actions that must be taken to rebuild the housing stock may assist regions in allocating resources for reconstruction. This paper presents the development of a comprehensive disaster management framework to assist decision-makers in predicting the impact of projected natural disasters on housing. This framework uses a simulation-based approach to quantify likely regional …

Significant research over the years has aimed to redefine the flight capabilities of aircraft after sustaining structural damage to critical components. Flight survivability and controllability are key areas of concern when designing fault-tolerant flight control systems to handle a wide range of potential scenarios. However, there is a lack of research on the impact of physically damaged missile systems. Missile counter-defense and intercept capabilities have become more advanced as the United States has focused heavily on these areas over the years. Damaged missiles due to a kinetic intercept capability present an opportunity for analysis of the post-damage implications on flight …

Falls during walking are a leading cause of injuries across aging. Many of these falls are due to slips and trips. The ability to perceive disturbances to ongoing motion may play an important role in the control of walking balance. However, disturbance perception has been investigated in standing balance, but its role in walking balance due to slip- and trip-like disturbances remains largely unknown. Characterizing locomotor disturbance perception in young adults may lead to a more comprehensive understanding of sensorimotor walking balance control.
This work defined locomotor disturbance perception in response to slip and trip-like disturbances in young adults. We …
