Self-Powered Microgravity Resistance Exercise With Soft Pneumatic Exoskeletons, Aislinn Marcee, Emma Treadway Jan 2022

Self-Powered Microgravity Resistance Exercise With Soft Pneumatic Exoskeletons, Aislinn Marcee, Emma Treadway

Engineering Faculty Research

As preparations continue towards sending humans on a 3-year mission to Mars, space programs must find solutions to combat muscular atrophy experienced by astronauts during extended time in microgravity. One method currently used to combat muscle deterioration is daily resistance training sessions using an apparatus like the ARED or CEVIS exercise devices, but these daily exercise sessions are not expected to be enough to protect the muscles during longer missions. To help combat muscular atrophy, we propose self-resistance outside of the daily exercise sessions implemented through soft pneumatic exoskeletons that could be integrated into astronauts’ suits, augmenting the formal exercise …

Processing-Microstructure-Property Correlation For 316l Stainless Steel Manufactured By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Nathalia Diaz Vallejo Jan 2022

Processing-Microstructure-Property Correlation For 316l Stainless Steel Manufactured By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Nathalia Diaz Vallejo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The microstructural development of 316L stainless steel (316L SS) was investigated over a wide range of systematically varied laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) parameters, such as laser power, laser scan speed, hatch distance, and volumetric energy density. The use of volumetric energy density between 46 and 127 J/mm3 produced samples with relative density above 99.8% demonstrating that even in the optimized range of processing parameters the pores are unavoidable. Shifting from this range through a variation of laser scan speed produced two types of flaws, lack of fusion (LoF) and keyhole (KH) porosity leading to a decrease in the relative …

Thermofluidic Characterization Of Carbon Dioxide Near Critical Conditions At Microscale, Anatoly Parahovnik Jan 2022

Thermofluidic Characterization Of Carbon Dioxide Near Critical Conditions At Microscale, Anatoly Parahovnik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This work revealed the thermo physical characteristics of near critical and supercritical carbon dioxide at the micro scale. The results include the extension of flow boiling heat transfer correlations, boiling inception, near critical bubble dynamics, thermalization mode shift, Joule Thomson effect and pressure drop evaluation. It was found that extremely low superheat temperatures are required for boiling inception near the critical conditions (i.e., T=31.4 °C, and P=7.37 MPa), and boiling heat transfer correlations were extended up to a reduced pressure of 0.99. The work also revealed a significant enhancement of the heat transfer coefficient as the critical conditions approached, which …

Mobile brain-body imaging (MoBI) seeks to understand human brain and body dynamics during movement and locomotor tasks such as walking with perturbations that challenge balance and lead to adaptation of walking behavior. In this dissertation, I evaluated the long-term electromyography (EMG) recording performance of dry epidermal electrodes for measuring electrical muscle activity. I also evaluated the relationships between the signals recorded from the two sides of dual-sided electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes, a recent advancement in EEG electrode design for measuring electrical brain activity. Last, I investigated adaptation of brain and body responses to small and frequent perturbations during treadmill walking while …

Data-Driven Modeling Of Mechanical Behaviors Of Additively Manufactured Materials, Ziyang Zhang Jan 2022

Data-Driven Modeling Of Mechanical Behaviors Of Additively Manufactured Materials, Ziyang Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a revolutionary technology that greatly improves the flexibility of fabricating parts with complex structures and eliminates the cost of making molds. While AM techniques offer unique benefits over traditional manufacturing processes, it is challenging to predict the mechanical behaviors of additively manufactured parts based on design and process parameters. With recent advances in machine learning, data-driven methods have the potential to overcome such limitations. In this work, data-driven modeling frameworks were proposed to predict the tensile, flexural, and compressive behaviors of additively manufactured plastics and composites. Ensemble learning was used to predict the tensile strength of …

Vibrations Of Rotationally Periodic Structures: A Metric For Mistuning Characterization And Vibration Localization, Andres Rodriguez Jan 2022

Vibrations Of Rotationally Periodic Structures: A Metric For Mistuning Characterization And Vibration Localization, Andres Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Blisk components are an integral part of jet engines and power generation systems. Composed of a single monolithic structure, integral blisks combine the blade-and-disk portion of primary components such as the fan, compressor stage, or turbine stage. This design modification increases the aerodynamic performance while decreasing the cost and eliminating time of assembly. However, these benefits come with the loss of blade-disk connection interfaces, which greatly reduces the structure's damping and its ability to attenuate unwanted structural vibrations. Blisk dynamics are impacted by mistuning, which is a disruption of the periodic symmetry of otherwise identical bladed sections. This disruption degrades …

Complex Quantum Contagion: A Quantum-Like Approach For The Analysis Of Co-Evolutionary Dynamics Of Social Contagion, Ece Mutlu Jan 2022

Complex Quantum Contagion: A Quantum-Like Approach For The Analysis Of Co-Evolutionary Dynamics Of Social Contagion, Ece Mutlu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Modeling the dynamics of social contagion processes has recently attracted a substantial amount of interest from researchers due to its wide applicability in network science, multi-agent systems, information science, and marketing. Unlike in biological spreading, the existence of a reinforcement effect in social contagion necessitates considering the complexity of individuals in the systems. Although many studies acknowledged the heterogeneity of the individuals in their adoption of information (or behavior), there are no studies that take into account the individuals' uncertainty during their decision-making despite its theoretical and experimental evidence in behavioral economics, decision science, cognitive science, or multi-agent systems. This …

A Contingent Approach To Studying Technical Programs In The Public Aerospace Industry, Laura Segarra Jan 2022

A Contingent Approach To Studying Technical Programs In The Public Aerospace Industry, Laura Segarra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Bibliometric evaluation of the literature indicates that a unified theory of program management does not yet exist. The vastly different definitions and implementations of programs across organizations and industries indicate that program management as an organizational concept is not well understood. As researchers have tried to make sense of various perspectives and definitions, it becomes clear that different kinds of programs exist, and further attention to their context is needed. While relationships between structural and environmental variables have been extensively researched in organizational studies, studies in program management are scant, lack incorporation of environmental variables relevant to programs and projects, …

Shape Parameter & Nodal Distribution Insensitive Radial Basis Functions For Nonlinear Optimal Control Problems, Ahmed Elsadek Ahmed Elshafee Seleit

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Computational optimal control relies mainly on pseudospectral methods. The use of Chebyshev and Legendre polynomials is ubiquitous in the literature. This family of methods has good accuracy characteristics but constraints the nodal distribution to a certain grid that is denser at the boundaries. In this work, a set of novel Coupled Radial Basis Functions (CRBFs) is introduced as an approximation means for the nonlinear optimal control problem. CRBFs are real-valued Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) augmented with a conical spline. They do not require a specific nodal distribution. A plethora of research articles were published on the optimization of the shape …

Generic Behavior Framework Of Sx And Ds Nickel-Base Superalloys With Applications To Constitutive And Life Prediction Modeling, Firat Irmak Jan 2022

Generic Behavior Framework Of Sx And Ds Nickel-Base Superalloys With Applications To Constitutive And Life Prediction Modeling, Firat Irmak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Selection of materials to be used for components experiencing extreme conditions is a critical process in the design phase. Nickel-base superalloys have been frequently used for hot gas path components in the turbomachinery industry. These components are required to withstand both fatigue and creep at extreme temperatures during their service time. In general, the extreme temperature materials mostly embody polycrystalline, directionally solidified, and single crystal superalloys. It is essential for design engineers to predict accurate damage behavior and lifespan for these components to prevent catastrophic failures. This dissertation presents a new framework to represent mechanical behavior of Nickel-base superalloys under …

Quantum Mechanics And Control Using Fractional Calculus: A Study Of The Shutter Problem For Fractional Quantum Fields, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

The ‘diffraction in space’ and the ‘diffraction in time’ phenomena are considered in regard to a continuously open, and a closed shutter that is opened at an instant in time, respectively. The purpose of this is to provide a background to the principal theme of this article, which is to extend the ‘quantum shutter problem’ for the case when the wave function is determined by the fundamental solution to a partial differential equation with a fractional derivative of space or of time. This involves the development of Green’s function solutions for the space- and time-fractional Schrödinger equation and the time-fractional …

Honey Badger Optimizer For Extracting The Ungiven Parameters Of Pemfc Model: Steady-State Assessment, Hossam Ashraf, Sameh Osama Abdellatif Dr, Mahmoud Elkoly Dr, Attia Elfergany Prof

Electrical Engineering

In this work, a novel attempt is performed to optimally identify the seven ungiven parameters of the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) steady-state model. A fitness function is adapted to reduce the sum of quadratic errors (SQEs) between the experimentally measured voltages and the corresponding computed values. A honey badger optimizer (HBO) is utilized to minimize the SQEs, exposed to a group of inequality bounds. Three test cases of well-known commercial PEMFCs units as benchmarking are elucidated and discussed over different steady-state operating conditions. Substantial comparisons to the other up-to-date optimizers published in the art-of-literature are provided to appraise …

Electrical Engineering

Capacitance response of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can be oppressed to deduce underlying physical mechanisms, both in the materials at external interfaces and in bulk materials. Accordingly, this paper investigates the Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) characteristic curves of cesium lead halides (CsPbX3: X = I, Br, or Cl) used as an active layer in PSCs. The SCAPS-1D simulator harnessed the actual device (CsPbX3: X = I Br, or Cl) with material parameters from previous experimental work. Three main simulation parameters were investigated: the thickness of the active layer, the doping, and the defects impacts.

Measurement Of Orientation And Distance Change Using Circularly Polarized Uwb Signals, Janusz Przewocki, Max Ammann, Adam Narbudowicz Jan 2022

Measurement Of Orientation And Distance Change Using Circularly Polarized Uwb Signals, Janusz Przewocki, Max Ammann, Adam Narbudowicz

Articles

The article proposes methodology to use circularly polarized (CP) ultra-wideband (UWB) signals for simultaneous measurement of orientation and distance changes between transmitter and receiver. The proposed technique uses the rotational Doppler effect on CP pulsed communication. The amplitude of a CP signal is immune to polarization misalignment in the presence of rotation; however, the phase is subjected to a frequency-invariant shift proportional to the rotation angle. This significantly distorts the pulse shape in the time domain and can be used for the measurement of the rotated angle. By combining the technique with the well-known localization capability of UWB systems, one …

Improving Collaborative Recommendation Based On Item Weight Link Prediction, Sahraoui Kharroubi, Youcef Dahmani, Omar Nouali Jan 2022

Improving Collaborative Recommendation Based On Item Weight Link Prediction, Sahraoui Kharroubi, Youcef Dahmani, Omar Nouali

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

There is a continuous information overload on the Web. The problem treated is how to have relevant items (documents, products, services, etc.) at time and without difficulty. Filtering system also called recommender systems are widely used to recommend items to users by similarity process such as Amazon, MovieLens, Cdnow, etc. In the literature, to predict a link in a bipartite network, most methods are based either on a binary history (like, dislike) or on the common neighbourhood of the active user. In this paper, we modelled the recommender system by a weighted bipartite network. The bipartite topology offers a bidirectional …

An Effective Prediction Method For Network State Information In Sd-Wan, Erdal Akin, Ferdi̇ Saraç, Ömer Aslan Jan 2022

An Effective Prediction Method For Network State Information In Sd-Wan, Erdal Akin, Ferdi̇ Saraç, Ömer Aslan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In a software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN), a logically centralized controller is responsible for computing and installing paths in order to transfer packets among geographically distributed locations and remote users. Accordingly, this would necessitate obtaining the global view and dynamic network state information (NSI) of the network. Therefore, the centralized controller periodically collects link-state information from each port of each switch at fixed time periods. While collecting NSI in short periods causes protocol overhead on the controller, collecting in longer periods leads to obtaining inaccurate NSI. In both cases, packet losses are inevitable, which is not preferred for quality of …

Timestamp Estimation From Outdoor Scenes, Tawfiq Salem, Jisoo Hwang, Rafael Padilha Jan 2022

Timestamp Estimation From Outdoor Scenes, Tawfiq Salem, Jisoo Hwang, Rafael Padilha

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The increasing availability of smartphones allowed people to easily capture and share images on the internet. These images are often associated with metadata, including the image capture time (timestamp) and the location where the image was captured (geolocation). The metadata associated with images provides valuable information to better understand scenes and events presented in these images. The timestamp can be manipulated intentionally to provide false information to convey a twisted version of reality. Images with manipulated timestamps are often used as a cover-up for wrongdoing or broadcasting false claims and competing views on the internet. Estimating the time of capture …

Applying Lessons From Safety-Ii Proof Of Concept In Line Operational Safety Audit To Aviation Maintenance, David R. Zubowski

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Maintenance safety culture is a topic that continues to arise. There is much information in many different literature sources that discusses measuring, analyzing, and scrutinizing data to determine if a safety culture exists in an organization and how to improve it. Currently, aviation maintenance personnel are surveyed for their opinions on how safe their culture is. However, this may not be an adequate reflection of the safety culture or help maintenance personnel conduct their jobs. Typically, they are operating in an environment that has a central determination of what safety culture is. Other programs in other fields have attempted a …

Drone Cage Design And Implementation To Enable Small Drone Architecture Testing, Marco Fagetti, Emily M. Suh

Undergraduate Student Works

Geometric mechanics is a dynamical formalism that allows for simultaneous treatment of rotational and translational motion without the drawbacks of attitude parameterization sets. While geometric mechanics is well suited to deal with full six degree-of-freedom motion or significant position-attitude coupling, this formalism has yet to be extensively applied to hardware systems. The broader research goals of this work aim to prove the practical viability of this theoretical framework by applying it to a class of Crazyflie drones, which are frequently used to assess Guidance, Navigation, and Control schemes. To efficiently achieve these goals, a reliable, collapsible drone cage is required …
