Efficient Routing Protocols For Cognitive Radio Networks Of Energy-Constrained Devices And Dissimilar Delay-Sensitive Levels, Rita Ahmad Abu Diab
Efficient Routing Protocols For Cognitive Radio Networks Of Energy-Constrained Devices And Dissimilar Delay-Sensitive Levels, Rita Ahmad Abu Diab
Dissertations
As the Cognitive Radio (CR) overwhelms spectrum deficiency, it offers a substantial communication environment to accommodate IoT devices demanding connectivity and prompt arrival of their sensed data. The perceived shortage in CR routing protocols concerning delay and energy consumption promotes the novel proposal of two multi-hop routing protocols; Efficient Routing protocol for Cognitive Radio (ERCR) networks and Efficient Hybrid Routing protocol for Cognitive Radio (EHRCR) networks. A proposal for a D/M/1/K queuing model adapted to be applied in a CR network (CRN) is investigated with a retrial service system over a single licensed channel. …

Motivation: Graphs or networks are widely utilized to model the interactions between different entities (e.g., proteins, drugs, etc) for biomedical applications. Predicting potential links in biomedical networks is important for understanding the pathological mechanisms of various complex human diseases, as well as screening compound targets for drug discovery. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have been designed for link prediction in various biomedical networks, which rely on the node features extracted from different data sources, e.g., sequence, structure and network data. However, it is challenging to effectively integrate these data sources and automatically extract features for different link prediction tasks. Results: In …

Verifiable Searchable Encryption Framework Against Insider Keyword-Guessing Attack In Cloud Storage, Yinbin Miao, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Ximeng Liu, Hongwei Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Searchable encryption (SE) allows cloud tenants to retrieve encrypted data while preserving data confidentiality securely. Many SE solutions have been designed to improve efficiency and security, but most of them are still susceptible to insider Keyword-Guessing Attacks (KGA), which implies that the internal attackers can guess the candidate keywords successfully in an off-line manner. Also in existing SE solutions, a semi-honest-but-curious cloud server may deliver incorrect search results by performing only a fraction of retrieval operations honestly (e.g., to save storage space). To address these two challenging issues, we first construct the basic Verifiable SE Framework (VSEF), which can withstand …

Bistability And Switching Behavior In Moving Animal Groups, Daniel Strömbom, Stephanie Nickerson, Catherine Futterman, Alyssa Difazio, Cameron Costello, Kolbjørn Tunstrøm
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Moving animal groups such as schools of fish and flocks of birds frequently switch between different group structures. Standard models of collective motion have been used successfully to explain how stable groups form via local interactions between individuals, but they are typically unable to produce groups that exhibit spontaneous switching. We are only aware of one model, constructed for barred flagtail fish that are known to rely on alignment and attraction to organize their collective motion, that has been shown to generate this type of behavior in 2D (or 3D). Interestingly, another species of fish, golden shiners, do exhibit switching …

Finding Signal In The Noise: High-Fidelity, Quantitative, Optical Blood Perfusion Imaging With Interference, Abdul Mohaimen Safi
Finding Signal In The Noise: High-Fidelity, Quantitative, Optical Blood Perfusion Imaging With Interference, Abdul Mohaimen Safi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For label-free, non-invasive, wide field-of-view (FOV) imaging/monitoring of blood flow, speckle-based approaches are gaining popularity. However, to obtain quantitative flow information, speckle techniques rely on the multi-exposure scheme which requires complex, bulky, and expensive instrumentation, limiting its application to preclinical studies. This dissertation directly addresses these issues. In the first part of this dissertation, we report a novel single shot synthetic multi-exposure speckle imaging (syMESI) method to synthetically produce multi-exposure images from one short single exposure speckle image using spatial binning/averaging. We demonstrate that syMESI can reimagine conventional hardware based MESI, with low-cost single exposure laser speckle imaging (LSCI) instrumentation. …

Molecular excitons, which propagate spatially via electronic energy transfer, are central to numerous applications including light harvesting, organic optoelectronics, and nanoscale computing; they may also benefit applications such as photothermal therapy and photoacoustic imaging through the local generation of heat via rapid excited-state quenching. Here we show how to tune between energy transfer and quenching for heterodimers of the same pair of cyanine dyes by altering their spatial configuration on a DNA template. We assemble “transverse” and “adjacent” heterodimers of Cy5 and Cy5.5 using DNA Holliday junctions. We find that the transverse heterodimers exhibit optical properties consistent with excitonically interacting …

The solar spectrum energy absorption is very important for designing any solar absorber. The need for absorbing visible, infrared, and ultraviolet regions is increasing as most of the absorbers absorb visible regions. We propose a metasurface solar absorber based on Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) substrate which increases the absorption in visible, infrared and ultraviolet regions. GST is a phase-changing material having two different phases amorphous (aGST) and crystalline (cGST). The absorber is also analyzed using machine learning algorithm to predict the absorption values for different wavelengths. The solar absorber is showing an ultra-broadband response covering a 0.2–1.5 …

Medical devices have historically been less regulated than their drug and biologic counterparts. A benefit of this less demanding regulatory regime is facilitating innovation by making new devices available to consumers in a timely fashion. Nevertheless, there is increasing concern that this approach raises serious public health and safety concerns. The Institute of Medicine in 2011 published a critique of the American pathway allowing moderate-risk devices to be brought to the market through the less-rigorous 501(k) pathway,1 flagging a need for increased postmarket review and surveillance. High-profile recalls of medical devices, such as vaginal mesh products, along with reports globally …

Thermochemical Conversion Of Lipid-Extracted Algal Biomass To Value-Added Sustainable Products, Magdalini Tsarpali
Thermochemical Conversion Of Lipid-Extracted Algal Biomass To Value-Added Sustainable Products, Magdalini Tsarpali
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The extensive use of fossil fuels has increased the CO2 emissions, a phenomenon that has increased the demand for renewable energy and resources. Algae, photosynthetic aquatic organisms, have recently caught attention due to their high growth rate and the high CO2 capture ability. Biofuels and bioproducts from algae are considered promising alternatives because of their lower carbon footprint. Lipids are by far the most popular algal product, as they find applications in both fuels, such as biodiesel, and products, such as nutraceuticals and cosmetics. However, after lipid extraction, conversion of the residual algal biomass to value-added products is viewed as …

Coal Fines Migration: A Holistic Review Of Influencing Factors, Faisal Ur Rahman Awan, Muhammad Arif, Stefan Iglauer, Alireza Keshavarz
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Coal fines can substantially influence coal seam gas reservoir permeability, thus impeding the flow of gas in coal microstructure. The coal fines generation and migration are influenced by several factors, wherein coal fines are generally hydrophobic and aggregate in natural coal seam gas (CSG) under prevailing conditions of pH, salinity, temperature and pressure. This aggregation behaviour can damage the coal matrix and cleat system permeabilities, leading to a considerable reduction of proppant pack conductivity (i.e. fracture conductivity). Several datasets have been reported within the literature on this subject in the last decade. However, a more up-to-date discussion of this area …

Microwave-driven plasma gasification technology has the potential to produce clean energy from municipal and industrial solid wastes. It can generate temperatures above 2000 K (as high as 30,000 K) in a reactor, leading to complete combustion and reduction of toxic byproducts. Characterizing complex processes inside such a system is however challenging. In previous studies, simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) produced reproducible results, but the simulations are tedious and involve assumptions. In this study, we propose machine-learning models that can be used in tandem with CFD, to accelerate high-fidelity fluid simulation, improve turbulence modeling, and enhance reduced-order models. A two-dimensional …

Entity-Driven Fact-Aware Abstractive Summarization Of Biomedical Literature, Amanuel Alambo, Tanvi Banerjee, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Michael Raymer
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
As part of the large number of scientific articles being published every year, the publication rate of biomedical literature has been increasing. Consequently, there has been considerable effort to harness and summarize the massive amount of biomedical research articles. While transformer-based encoder-decoder models in a vanilla source document-to-summary setting have been extensively studied for abstractive summarization in different domains, their major limitations continue to be entity hallucination (a phenomenon where generated summaries constitute entities not related to or present in source article(s)) and factual inconsistency. This problem is exacerbated in a biomedical setting where named entities and their semantics (which …

Physical therapists assist people with movement disorders by providing interventions to reduce pain, improve mobility, avoid surgeries, and prevent falls and secondary complications of neurodegenerative disorders. Current gait assessments used by physical therapists, such as the Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale, provide only semi-quantitative data, and cannot assess walking quality in detail or describe how one’s walking quality changes over time. As a result, quantitative systems have grownas useful tools …
Synthesis Of Thiol-Acrylate Hydrogels For 3d Cell Culture And Microfluidic Applications, Anowar Hossain Khan
Synthesis Of Thiol-Acrylate Hydrogels For 3d Cell Culture And Microfluidic Applications, Anowar Hossain Khan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Globally cell culture is an $18.98 billion industry as of 2020, with an 11.6 percent annual growth rate. Drug discovery has an estimated worth of $69.8 billion in 2020 and is predicted to grow to $110.4 billion by 2025. Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture of cancer cells is one of the rapidly growing felids since it better recapitulates in vivo conditions compared to two-dimensional (2D) models. However, it is challenging to grow 3D tumor spheroids outside the body, and some of the existing technology can generate these spheroids outside the human body but poorly mimic in vivo tumor models. Therefore, there …
U-Splines: Splines Over Unstructured Meshes, Steven K. Schmidt
U-Splines: Splines Over Unstructured Meshes, Steven K. Schmidt
Theses and Dissertations
U-splines are a novel approach to the construction of a spline basis for representing smooth objects in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE). A spline is a piecewise-defined function that satisfies continuity constraints between adjacent cells in a mesh. U-splines differ from existing spline constructions, such as Non-Uniform Rational B-splines (NURBS), subdivision surfaces, T-splines, and hierarchical B-splines, in that they can accommodate local variation in cell size, polynomial degree, and smoothness simultaneously over more varied mesh configurations. Mixed cell types (e.g., triangle and tetrahedron and quadrilateral and hexahedral cells in the same mesh) and T-junctions are also supported. The …

Evaluating The Low-Temperature Properties Of Asphalt Binders Extracted From Mixtures Containing Recycled Materials, Eslam Deef-Allah, Magdy Abdelrahman
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The use of recycled materials − such as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) − in asphalt mixtures reduces natural resources demands and decreases materials dumped in landfills. The aged binders included in the recycled materials alter binders' low-temperature properties included in asphalt mixtures. Therefore, asphalt binders were extracted from asphalt mixtures collected from the field as cores. Due to the limited amount of extracted asphalt binders (EABs), a dynamic shear rheometer was used to examine the low-temperature properties [e.g., true temperature (Tt), continuous temperature (Tc), and delta continuous temperature (ΔTc)]. Using recycled materials in asphalt mixtures …
