Fragmentation Of Chemically Herded Oil Slicks By Obstacles: Visualizations, Flow Measurements, And Spatial Distributions, Ali Alshamrani Jun 2022

Fragmentation Of Chemically Herded Oil Slicks By Obstacles: Visualizations, Flow Measurements, And Spatial Distributions, Ali Alshamrani

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chemical herders are a promising technique for treatment of oil spills in icy waters at high latitudes. However, obstacles on the water surface such as floating ice affects or interferes with all spill response countermeasures including chemical herder operations by fracturing the contracting oil slick and trapping small oil patches. Chemical herders are likely to be especially useful in containing oil spills in remote, ice-infested Arctic waters, where using booms to contain an oil slick is difficult. Much of the previous research into chemical herder has focused on the effectiveness of different types of chemical herder agents to thicken oil …

Development And Analysis Of Green Pathways For Biphasic Extraction At High Pressure, Kyle L. Cogswell Jun 2022

Development And Analysis Of Green Pathways For Biphasic Extraction At High Pressure, Kyle L. Cogswell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Technological advancements over the last century have allowed for advancements not only in science and engineering but medicine as well. The use of supercritical fluids for processing continues today after its initial boom in the latter part of the last century; often being paired with co-solvents to extend the range of use for this technique. Supercritical fluid extraction may be paired with pressurized warm water extraction to yield a new intensified process for biphasic extractions that improves efficiency and reduces waste. This combination may be used to replace sequential extraction processes or supercritical extraction processes that make use of organic …

Exploring Toluene Biosynthesis In Microbial Consortia Derived From Sediments And Superfund Site Groundwater, Raymond J. Poche Jun 2022

Exploring Toluene Biosynthesis In Microbial Consortia Derived From Sediments And Superfund Site Groundwater, Raymond J. Poche

LSU Master's Theses

While the aromatic hydrocarbon toluene is widely regarded as a contaminant associated with discharges of crude oil and refined petroleum products (e.g., gasoline), the enzyme phenylacetate decarboxylase catalyzes the decarboxylation of phenylacetate to yield toluene. Research described in this thesis further investigated toluene biosynthesis by a microbial consortium originating from chlorinated solvent-contaminated groundwater near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In anoxic growth media supplemented with phenylacetate as a precursor, toluene accumulation was found to be maximal at near-neutral to slightly acidic pHs (toluene accumulation greater than 1 mg/L at pH in the range of 5.6 to 7.6, but was not observed for …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Water is of central importance for reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. With predictions of dire global water scarcity, attention is turning to resources that are considered to be unconventional, and hence called Unconventional Water Resources (UWRs). These are considered as supplementary water resources that need specialized processes to be used as water supply. The literature encompasses a vast number of studies on various UWRs and their usefulness in certain environmental and/or socio-economic contexts. However, a recent, all-encompassing article that brings the collective knowledge on UWRs together is missing. Considering the increasing importance of UWRs in …

Experimental Study On The Migration And Distribution Law Of Pulverized Coal In Roadway During Coal And Gas Outburst, Zhang Chaolin, Wang Yibo, Wang Enyuan, Zeng Wei, Wang Peizhong

Coal Geology & Exploration

Coal and gas outburst is one of the geological disasters that seriously threaten coal mine safety production, and its main disaster forms are gas suffocation, impact and burial of pulverized coal. In this paper, the coal and gas outburst experiments under different gas pressures were carried out using the self-developed multi-functional test system for coal and gas outburst simulation. The results show that the gas entrains the pulverized coal and sprays into the roadway in a jet shape after the outburst is triggered. The gas expansion energy is under the pressure of 0.35 MPa and the initial acceleration of outburst …

“The ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin” has now been upgraded to a major national strategy. The bends area (the “几” shaped area, also known as the Jiziwan area) is an important part of the Yellow River Basin, and it is also an important gathering area of China’s coal energy. Now the region has six large modern coal bases, coal production accounts for about 40% of the country, in China’s energy security supply security occupies the “ballast” position. However, the region is located in the western arid-semi-arid region, with fragile ecological environment and poor anti-disturbance ability, …

Conical Source Transient Electromagnetic Response Characteristics With Overburden Based On Occam Constrained Inversion, Li Zhe, Yang Haiyan, Yue Jianhua, Liu Zhixin, Jiang Zhihai, Su Benyu, Zhang Hua, Wang Ling, Yang Fujie

Coal Geology & Exploration

The overburden thickness and conductivity can affect transient electromagnetic response in shallow subsurface investigation. In order to further verify the overburden detection effect with a conical source device, combining all-time apparent resistivity conversion of transient electromagnetic field, the electromagnetic response characteristics of the underlying strata influenced by the overburden was studied by introducing an Occam inversion with stratum information constraints. The results indicate that electromagnetic response intensity of the target layer is related to the resistivity ratio of the overburden to the target layer. With the overburden resistivity gradually increasing, the resistivity fitting degree between inversed data and real value …

Engineering The Lanthanide And Actinide Dopants Effects On The Local Environment Of Luminescent Complex Metal Oxide, Yuming Wang Jun 2022

Engineering The Lanthanide And Actinide Dopants Effects On The Local Environment Of Luminescent Complex Metal Oxide, Yuming Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Rare earth (RE) based phosphor materials are widely used as luminescent probes in high-temperature optical thermometry where standard methods are unsuitable. The current generation of luminescent thermometers lacks stability and energy transport within the operating temperature ranges. The challenge is developing an oxide-based material with high luminescence intensity and thermal sensitivity/stability, suitable for an optical temperature sensor/thermal barrier coating. This work aims to develop a fundamental understanding of the local environment surrounding RE or actinide dopants in metal oxide hosts to engineer their luminescence property. To maximize the luminescence, the local symmetry, doping concentration, and radiative/non-radiative relaxation pathways must be …

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Opioid overdose deaths remain a major public health crisis. We used a system dynamics simulation model of the U.S. opioid-using population age 12 and older to explore the impacts of 11 strategies on the prevalence of opioid use disorder (OUD) and fatal opioid overdoses from 2022 to 2032. These strategies spanned opioid misuse and OUD prevention, buprenorphine capacity, recovery support, and overdose harm reduction. By 2032, three strategies saved the most lives: (i) reducing the risk of opioid overdose involving fentanyl use, which may be achieved through fentanyl-focused harm reduction services; (ii) increasing naloxone distribution to people who use opioids; …
