Evaluating The Potential Of Ensemble Learning For One Day-Ahead Forecasting Of Power System Demand In Ireland, Karol Skowronski

ICT

Accurate One Day-Ahead Demand Forecasting (ODADF) is crucial for electrical network reliability, the environment, and trading markets. While individual models face challenges in achieving accurate predictions, ensemble learning models have emerged as potential solution. They have achieved success in ODADF in several countries; however, there has been no research conducted for the Irish power system. Therefore, research objectives were formed, to develop a framework of ensemble learning models, evaluate their performance, and examine their potential for ODADF in Ireland, to fill the gap. Experimentation, and CRISP-DM were selected as primary research methodology, and project management framework, respectively. The development of …

Development Of Holographic Recording Material For Fabrication Of Solar Concentrators For Micro Satellites, Brian Rogers

Doctoral

Holographic solar concentration has been a topic of increasing interest over recent years because of the lightweight and physically compact nature of holograms, which gives them an advantage over other, conventional concentration methods. As holographic recording materials develop further, their characteristics prove to meet the demands required of them to make more effective holographic solar concentrators. The development of photovoltaics in tandem with holographic materials has led to a host of solar concentrating device designs that take advantage of the unique properties of diffractive optics. Compared to refractive optics, holographic devices are more lightweight and compact. This makes holographic devices …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

In the hot-rolling process, steel was subjected to high temperatures which results in the formation of an oxide layer called scale. The oxide scale can be affected to the surface characteristic of the hot-rolled steel product. The scale must be completely removed from the surface of the steel before further processing. This research aimed to examine the adhesion behavior of scale on hot-rolled steel with different silicon contents (0.01, 0.12, 0.18, and 0.29 wt%) using a tensile testing machine with an observation setup. The results showed that the scale thickness decreased with increasing silicon content in the range of 9 …

Seeking for environmentally friendly treatments, lignosulfonates (LSs) have been considered for surface modification of NLF due to their amphiphilic properties. Thus, the objective of the present work is to evaluate the influence of sodium LS (SLS) treatment protocols in the properties and mechanical behavior of fique (Furcraea Andina) fibers. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric (TGA) and spectroscopic (FTIR) analyzes were performed, as well as optical microscopy, …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Silicon nitride and zirconia were mixed with SiO2, MgO, Y2O3 as sintering additives and pressureless sintered at 1650℃ in N2 atmosphere for 2 h. The XRD results showed a-Si3N4 was partially transformed to b-Si3N4 with 3:3:5 weight ratio of SiO2 : MgO : Y2O3. However, at 5 wt% of ZrO2 addition promoted phase transformation of a-Si3N4 to b-Si3N4 while 35 wt% of ZrO2 completely transformed to b-Si3N4 phase. Si3N4 has a lower density than ZrO2, bulk density of samples increases in correlation with the amount of ZrO2. Because there was no difference in hardness and flexural strength between sintered Si3N4 …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This study demonstrated natural dyeing of linen with a dye extracted from sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.). Four metallic salt mordants, namely (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2, CuSO4, SnCl2, and AlK(SO4)2, referred to as Fe, Cu, Sn, and Al, respectively, were used to improve the dyeing properties. The influences of the pH, dye concentration, mordant type and concentration, and mordanting technique on the dyeing properties were investigated. Dyeing without mordants resulted in a reddish-brown fabric; however, different mordants produced a variety of color shades. In general, the mordant containing Fe yielded the highest color strength, generating a dark gray color very close to black. …
