A Type-2 Fuzzy Rule-Based Model For Diagnosis Of Covid-19, İhsan Şahi̇n, Erhan Akdoğan, Mehmet Emi̇n Aktan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a type-2 fuzzy logic-based decision support system comprising clinical examination and blood test results that health professionals can use in addition to existing methods in the diagnosis of COVID-19 has been developed. The developed system consists of three fuzzy units. The first fuzzy unit produces COVID-19 positivity as a percentage according to the respiratory rate, loss of smell, and body temperature values, and the second fuzzy unit according to the C-reactive protein, lymphocyte, and D-dimer values obtained as a result of the blood tests. In the third fuzzy unit, the COVID-19 positivity risks according to the clinical …

An Effective Hilbert-Huang Transform-Based Approach For Dynamic Eccentricity Fault Diagnosis In Double-Rotor Double-Sided Stator Structure Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generator Under Various Load And Speed Conditions, Makan Torabi, Yousef Alinejad Beromi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Eccentricity fault in double-sided axial flux permanent magnet generator is very difficult to be detected as the fault generated variations in terminal electrical parameters are very weak and chaotic, especially at the initial stages of the fault occurrence. In addition, one of the most important problems in any fault diagnosis approach is the investigation of load and speed variation on the proposed indices. To overcome the aforementioned difficulty and problems, this paper adopts a novelty detection algorithm based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) which is a time-frequency signal analysis approach based on empirical mode decomposition and the Hilbert transform. It is …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Transmission network planning problem (TNPP) is one of the pertinent issues of the planning activities in power systems. It aims to optimally pick out the routs, types, and number of the new installed lines to confront the expected future loading conditions. In this line, this study proposes a new economic model to the TNPP. The aim of the model is to find the optimal transmission routes at least investment and operating costs. Three recent algorithms called grey wolf optimization algorithm (GWOA), spotted hyena optimization algorithm (SHOA) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) are developed to solve the TNPP. The concept of …

Early Diagnosis Of Pancreatic Cancer By Machine Learning Methods Using Urine Biomarker Combinations, İrem Acer, Firat Orhan Bulucu, Semra İçer, Fatma Lati̇foğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The most common type of pancreatic cancer is pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), which accounts for the vast majority of pancreatic cancers. The five-year survival rate for PDAC due to late diagnosis is 9%. Early diagnosed PDAC patients survive longer than patients diagnosed at a more advanced stage. Biomarkers can play an essential role in the early detection of PDAC to assist the health professional. Machine learning and deep learning methods are used with biomarkers obtained in recent studies for diagnostic purposes. In order to increase the survival rates of PDAC patients, early diagnosis of the disease with a noninvasive test …

Binary Text Classification Using Genetic Programming With Crossover-Based Oversampling For Imbalanced Datasets, Mona Aljero, Nazi̇fe Di̇mi̇li̇ler
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
It is well known that classifiers trained using imbalanced datasets usually have a bias toward the majority class. In this context, classification models can present a high classification performance overall and for the majority class, even when the performance for the minority class is significantly lower. This paper presents a genetic programming (GP) model with a crossover-based oversampling technique for oversampling the imbalanced dataset for binary text classification. The aim of this study is to apply an oversampling technique to solve the imbalanced issue and improve the performance of the GP model that employed the proposed technique. The proposed technique …
Lvq Treatment For Zero-Shot Learning, Firat İsmai̇loğlu
Lvq Treatment For Zero-Shot Learning, Firat İsmai̇loğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In image classification, there are no labeled training instances for some classes, which are therefore called unseen classes or test classes. To classify these classes, zero-shot learning (ZSL) was developed, which typically attempts to learn a mapping from the (visual) feature space to the semantic space in which the classes are represented by a list of semantically meaningful attributes. However, the fact that this mapping is learned without using instances of the test classes affects the performance of ZSL, which is known as the domain shift problem. In this study, we propose to apply the learning vector quantization (LVQ) algorithm …
Enhancing Control Room Operator Decision Making: An Application Of Dynamic Influence Diagrams In Formaldehyde Manufacturing, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders L. Madsen
Enhancing Control Room Operator Decision Making: An Application Of Dynamic Influence Diagrams In Formaldehyde Manufacturing, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders L. Madsen
Articles
Intoday’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, control room operators must grapple with an ever-growing array of tasks and respon sibilities. One major challenge facing these operators is the potential for task overload, which can lead to decision fatigue and increased reliance on cognitive biases. To address this issue, we propose the use of dynamic influence diagrams (DID) as the core of our decision support system. By monitoring the process over time and identifying anomalies, DIDs can recommend the most effective course of action based on a probabilistic assessment of future outcomes. Instead of letting the operator choose or search for the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The relationship between processing parameters, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Al-8.3Fe-1.3V-1.8Si alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion is seldom studied. Therefore, fully dense alloys with two parameters were selected to investigate this key issue. The results show that the alloy with low power and scanning speed (S200) shows fan-shell-shaped melt pools and laser tracks while another (S350) shows a deeper and wider melt pool. Both alloys obtain a heterogeneous microstructure without a secondary phase in melt pool (MP) and a nano-sized phase in melt pool boundary (MPB). The difference between solid-solution strengthening and Orowan strengthening in MP and MPB …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
H2O2-fueled micromotors are state-of-the-art mobile microreactors in environmental remediation. In this work, a magnetic FeOx@MnO2@SiO2 micromotor with multi-functions is designed and demonstrated its catalytic performance in H2O2/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for simultaneously sustained motion and organic degradation. Moreover, this work reveals the correlations between catalytic efficiency and motion behavior/mechanism. The inner magnetic FeOx nanoellipsoids primarily trigger radical species (OH and O2−) to attack organics via Fenton-like reactions. The coated MnO2 layers on FeOx surface are responsible for decomposing H2O2 into O2 …

Lost Circulation Control During Drilling And Completion In Complex Formations, Chong Lin, Arash D. Taleghani, Chengyuan Xu, Zhenjiang You
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Well drilling is a common method for Earth exploration, underground mineral resource extraction, and geological storage of nuclear waste and carbon dioxide. Drilling fluid circulates in the well during drilling, cooling the drill bit, transporting rock cuttings, preventing wellbore collapse, and balancing formation pressure. Lost circulation occurs when less fluid returns from the wellbore than is pumped into it, resulting in economic losses due to drilling fluid wastage and nonproductive time. Untreated losses can cause well control issues, poor hole cleaning, pack-offs, and stuck pipe, impairing normal drilling. Lost circulation incidents are more likely to occur with the increasing share …

A New Volumetric Strain-Based Method For Determining The Crack Initiation Threshold Of Rocks Under Compression, Hao Li, Ruizhi Zhong, Leo Pel, David Smeulders, Zhenjiang You
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The crack initiation stress threshold ( ci) is an essential parameter in the brittle failure process of rocks. In this paper, a volumetric strain response method (VSRM) is proposed to determine the σci based on two new concepts, i.e., the dilatancy resistance state index ( ci) and the maximum value of the dilatancy resistance state index difference (| ci|), which represent the state of dilatancy resistance of the rock and the shear sliding resistance capacity of the crack-like pores during the compressive period, respectively. The deviatoric stress corresponding to the maximum | ci| is taken as the ci . We …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The lack of accessible and reliable electrical energy in Cameroon has become a pervasive obstacle to the nation's progress, with energy availability, quality, and cost identified as key hindrances to development over the past 15 years. Conventional solutions that rely on combustion engines and electrochemical storage systems have proven to be cost-prohibitive, limited in power output, and constrained in capacity. The dependence on traditional diesel generators has perpetuated maintenance challenges and a continuous demand for fuel supply, while the accompanying noise and pollution have restricted their use in residential areas. Recognizing the imperative of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and …

THE rapid expansion in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequency domain has completely changed the course of wireless communication. One of the most important steps to make smart cities, the Internet-of-Things (IoT), smart homes, and vehicular communication a reality is to use mm-wave frequencies for wireless applications. The rise in the number of wireless appliances has also led to a rise in data traffic [1]. The adoption of mm-wave frequencies enabled several gigahertz of bandwidth, allowing data rate and latency limits to be exceeded. The availability of a broad electromagnetic spectrum and frequency reusability are the most important characteristics of mm-wave deployment …

Long Future Frame Prediction Using Optical Flow Informed Deep Neural Networks For Enhancement Of Robotic Teleoperation In High Latency Environments, Md Moniruzzaman, Alexander Rassau, Douglas Chai, Syed M. S. Islam
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
High latency in teleoperation has a significant negative impact on operator performance. While deep learning has revolutionized many domains recently, it has not previously been applied to teleoperation enhancement. We propose a novel approach to predict video frames deep into the future using neural networks informed by synthetically generated optical flow information. This can be employed in teleoperated robotic systems that rely on video feeds for operator situational awareness. We have used the image-to-image translation technique as a basis for the prediction of future frames. The Pix2Pix conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) has been selected as a base network. Optical …

Splitting Tensile Strength Of Recycled Tire Steel Fiber-Reinforced Alkali-Activated Slag Concrete Designed By Taguchi Method, Milad Eskandarinia, Mina Esmailzade, Farhad Aslani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Despite offering several benefits in terms of environment and economics, few studies were conducted on the ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) based alkali-activated concrete reinforced with recycled tire steel fibers (RTSFs). Therefore, this paper employed the Taguchi method to investigate and optimize the influence of GGBFS content, the alkaline solution to GGBFS content ratio, sodium hydroxide solution concentration, and RTSF volume fraction on splitting tensile strength (STS) of recycled tire steel fiber-reinforced alkali-activated slag concrete (RTSFR-AASC). The microstructural evaluation was done through scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. The results indicated that the fiber content, …

Synergistic Effects Of Microplastics And Organic Foulants On The Performance Of Forward Osmosis Membranes, Mitra Golgoli, Mehdi Khiadani, Tushar Kanti Sen, Amir Razmjou, Michael L. Johns, Masoumeh Zargar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that are abundantly present in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Forward osmosis (FO) is an advanced treatment technology with potential applications in WWTPs. The presence of MPs in WWTP effluents can contribute to FO fouling and performance deterioration. This study focuses on FO membrane fouling by MPs of different sizes, and the interactional impacts of MPs and Humic acid (HA) (as the most common organic foulant in WWTPs) on FO membrane performance. The synergistic effect of combined MPs and HA fouling is shown to cause higher flux decline for FO membranes …

Shale Wettability Characteristics Via Air/Brines And Air/Oil Contact Angles And Influence Of Controlling Factors: A Case Study Of Lower Indus Basin, Pakistan, Darya Khan Bhutto, Abdul Majeed Shar, Ghazanfer Raza Abbasi, Ubedullah Ansari
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Wettability is the fundamental parameter that influences the productivity of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The knowledge of this regarding shale formation is yet inadequate; thus, detailed analysis is essential for successful development of such reservoirs. The Early Cretaceous Sembar formations in the Lower Indus Basin, Pakistan, is considered as the key target for energy exploration; however, it exhibits large uncertainties due to the lack of data availability. Sembar shales hold significant hydrocarbon volumes rich in organic content; however, prior to this, no comprehensive research has been conducted to quantify the wetting behavior of these shales. Thus, precise information about the wetting behavior …

Partially Oxidative Torrefaction Of Woody Biomass Pellets: Burning Behaviour And Emission Analysis, Sajid Riaz, Yasir M. Al-Abdeli, Ibukun Oluwoye
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Non-conventional torrefaction under partially oxidative conditions is an emerging cost-effective thermochemical pre-treatment method to improve the quality of biomass for energy applications. The literature lacks data on the combustion of biomass torrefied under oxygen-deficient atmosphere with actual reactor conditions (inevitable non-uniformities in the thermal environment). In this work, a dual mode fixed-bed biomass (torrefaction) reactor and combustor was operated on Australian biomass pellets, to torrefy the fuels at 275 °C for 30 min using partially oxidative atmosphere (O2: 5 vol %, balance N2) and then to combust them. Combustion behaviour with a particular focus on gaseous …

Effect Of 3d Printing Parameters On The Fatigue Properties Of Parts Manufactured By Fused Filament Fabrication: A Review, Hamed Bakhtiari, Muhammad Aamir, Majid Tolouei-Rad
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The advancement in 3D printing techniques has raised the hope to use additively manufactured parts as final products in various industries. However, due to the layer-by-layer nature of AM parts, they are highly susceptible to failure when they are subjected to fatigue loading. This review provides a detailed account of the influence of 3D printing parameters on the fatigue properties of parts manufactured by fused filament fabrication (FFF). Existing standards for fatigue testing of polymers and their limitation for 3D-printed parts are discussed. In addition, the cyclic behaviour of polymers is reviewed, and the impact of 3D printing parameters on …

Using Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles In A Magnetic Field To Enhance Oil Production From Oil-Wet Carbonate Reservoirs, F. Amrouche, M. J. Blunt, Stefan Iglauer, M. Short, T. Crosbie, E. Cordero, D. Xu
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Enhanced oil production can maximise yield from depleted reservoirs, and in the face of dwindling global oil reserves can reduce the need for exploratory drilling during the transition away from fossil fuels. A hybrid technique, merging a magnetic field (MF) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles (NPs), was investigated as a potential method of enhancing oil production from oil-wet carbonate reservoirs. The impact of this hybrid technique on rock wettability, zeta potential, and interfacial tension was also investigated. Displacement experiments were carried out on oil-wet Austin chalk – a laboratory carbonate rock analogue – using MgO NPs in deionized water (DW) …

Corrosion Behavior And Mechanism Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced Cocrw In An Acidic Nacl Solution, P. Qin, L. Y. Chen, Y. J. Liu, C. H. Zhao, Hongqi Sun, Laichang Zhang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The corrosion behavior and mechanism of the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) produced CoCrW were investigated in 0.9 wt% NaCl solution with a pH of 2. The corrosion resistance of the alloy increases after 28 days of immersion because of the formed oxide film, which results in the increased corrosion potential and the decreased passivation current density on the potentiodynamic polarization test. The corrosion mechanism of the L-PBF-produced CoCrW could be explained by the melt pool formed from the laser melting process, that the melt pools were “shrinking” by the formation and dissolution of the oxide film.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) is a new technology that can be utilized to provide security to vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications at the physical layer. In this paper, we achieve a higher key generation rate for V2V communications at lower cost and computational complexity. We investigate the use of a passive RIS as a relay, to introduce channel diversity and increase the key generation rate (KGR), accordingly. In this regard, we consider the subsets of consecutive reflecting elements instead of the RIS as a whole in a time slot, i.e., instead of a single reflector, the subsets of reflectors are utilized …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Cross-validation and performance measures are standard components in the evaluation of a geostatistical model. These are well established in the univariate case, but measures for multivariate geostatistical modeling have not received as much attention. In the case of a single target variable, the univariate approaches remain valid, but in the fully multivariate case where a vector of variables needs to be estimated, the evaluation needs to be based on all estimates simultaneously. An extension of cross-validation and associated performance measures to the fully multivariate case is presented and discussed for the case of regionalized compositions. The method is demonstrated by …

Localised Multivariate Uniform Conditioning (LMUC) is a technique designed for spatially locating Selective Mining Unit (SMU) grades derived using Multivariate Uniform Conditioning (MUC) for the assessment of recoverable resources. LMUC has the advantage of producing SMU estimates conforming to the MUC panel-specific grade-tonnage curves while preserving the spatial grade distribution at the selective mining level. However, LMUC results have two severe artifacts. This paper documents both artifacts using four grades from a large nickel–cobalt laterite deposit in Western Australia.

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are cost-effective energy storage devices and display high-energy density. To realize high round-trip energy efficiency, it is critical to develop durable bi-functional air electrodes, presenting high catalytic activity towards oxygen evolution/reduction reactions together. Herein, we report a nanocomposite based on ternary CoNiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH) and cobalt coordinated and N-doped porous carbon (Co-N-C) network, obtained by the in-situ growth of LDH over the surface of ZIF-67-derived 3D porous network. Co-N-C network contributes to the oxygen reduction reaction activity, while CoNiFe-LDH imparts to the oxygen evolution reaction activity. The rich active sites and enhanced electronic and mass …

During production from oil wells, the deposition of asphaltene and wax at surface facilities and porous media is one of the major operational challenges. The crude oil production rate is significantly reduced due to asphaltene deposition inside the reservoir. In addition, the deposition of these solids inside the surface facilities is costly to oil companies. In this study, the efficiency of different solvents in dissolving asphaltene and wax was investigated through static and dynamic tests. The analysis of solid deposits from the surface choke of one of the Iranian carbonate oil fields showed that they consisted of 41.3 wt % …
