An Analysis Of The Influence Of Speed On Fatal Accidents In Ohio, Megan Johnson Jan 2023

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Speed On Fatal Accidents In Ohio, Megan Johnson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Through data collected by NHTSA and FARS, Ohio crash data resulting in fatalities were analyzed through four different breakdowns to determine variables correlating to the fatalities. The breakdowns include dividing data from overall Ohio data, reports involving speeding, then from there to single-vehicle crashes. That data was divided down to only include male drivers and then finally only motorcycles. This data was analyzed as it was broken down to find trends with each category. Through these analyses, the trends were developed to suggest recommendations to implement through education and laws to help reduce the number of crashes resulting in fatalities.

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The proposed project is a way to deliver liquid medicine into the neonatal eye to prevent retinal detachment with lower risk for bacterial infection and drug misplacement. Currently, ophthalmologists use diabetic needles to introduce medication to the neonate eye. They estimate the injection location with hand-held calipers. This may allow the medicine to be misplaced from poor needle placement and introduce preventable error. The goal is to improve the delivery system ophthalmologists currently use by investigating ways to alter or enhance commonly used injection systems to make the procedure safer and more effective.

Defining The Proper Operating Time For The Septa Extractor, Abigail Jones Jan 2023

Defining The Proper Operating Time For The Septa Extractor, Abigail Jones

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Anionic polymerizations are a common type of reaction used to produce synthetic rubber. During these reactions, it is necessary to charge initiators, modifiers, and other substances, through pressurized containers that are sealed with rubber septa. These septa prevent oxygen and moisture from entering the pressurized container, and the reactor, though they need to be cleaned before use to remove other impurities. Currently a glass Soxhlet Extractor is used to remove such impurities, and though effective, it has a limited capacity, so it has to run frequently. This limitation led to the commissioning of the Septa Extractor, which is an automated …

Experimental And Numerical Studies On The Projective Dye Visualization Velocimetry In A Squared Vertical Tube, Mark Bradley Johnson Jan 2023

Experimental And Numerical Studies On The Projective Dye Visualization Velocimetry In A Squared Vertical Tube, Mark Bradley Johnson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In fluid flow experiments, there have been numerous techniques developed over the years to measure velocity. Most popular techniques are non-intrusive such as particle image velocimetry (PIV), but these techniques are not suitable for all applications. For instance, PIV cannot be used in examining in-vivo measurements since the laser is not able to penetrate through the patient, which is why medical applications typically use X-rays. However, the images obtained from X-rays, in particular digital subtraction angiography, are projective images which compress 3D flow features onto a 2D image. Therefore, when intensity techniques, such as optical flow method (OFM), are applied …

Effects Of Elastic Anisotropy On Residual Stress Measurements Performed Using The Hole-Drilling Technique, Joshua T. Ward Jan 2023

Effects Of Elastic Anisotropy On Residual Stress Measurements Performed Using The Hole-Drilling Technique, Joshua T. Ward

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In the present work, the variation in through-thickness residual stress profiles driven by elastic anisotropy is investigated using the incremental hole-drilling method. The standardized hole-drilling technique allows for the calculation of in-plane stresses based on measured surface strains, however, these calculations assume elastic isotropy. The assumption of elastic isotropy allows for the material constants to be reduced down to two values, however, this assumption is invalid for many materials used in aerospace design. These materials are often times elastically anisotropic, which leads to inaccuracy and uncertainty in measured stress profiles. An interference fit ring and plug sample was designed, using …
